About this section We hope this magazine provides both newcomers and longtime residents with a comprehensive guide to life in this county. Inside you’ll find everything you need, from how to sign up your child for school, contact your local elected official, find the nearest library and a list of ways to relax and have fun. We also reached out to some of the people who help make Forsyth County a great place to live. Read about them on the pages inside.

Who we are More than just a newspaper, the Forsyth County News reaches Forsyth’s largest media audience through digital and mobile platforms, as well as through video, magazines, social media, billboards and more. The official news source of Forsyth County since 1908, the Forsyth County News serves Georgia’s fast-growing, mostaffluent and healthiest county. With Forsyth County’s only paid circulation local newspaper, the most-visited local media website and a host of niche magazines and publications, the FCN remains committed to informing and entertaining users

across north Atlanta as Forsyth County’s premier media outlet. In 2018, the Forsyth County News joined with Local Media Outdoor to offer billboard and outdoor advertising options for our clients. The Forsyth County News is printed each Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and its website, ForsythNews.com, is updated with the latest local news and information around the clock. The Forsyth County News is owned by Metro Market Media, along with the The Times of Gainesville and the Dawson County News.

Where we’ve been Founded by Joe Patterson in downtown Cumming in 1908, the FCN has grown with the county it represents. In 1927, Roy P. Otwell purchased the Forsyth County News and the North Georgian, combining them as The Forsyth County News. Otwell remained chief editor and owner of the newspaper for 27 years. Charles Smithgall Sr. of Gainesville purchased the paper in 1954, and soon relocated the newspaper office to Dahlonega Street. It subsequently was operated from two differ-

ent Dahlonega Street locations. In December of 1998, the FCN was relocated to its current site, the renovated building of the former Cumming Hardware at 302 Veterans Memorial Boulevard. The News Company, headquartered in Gwinnett County, owned the Forsyth County News from the early 1970s until 1987, when The New York Times purchased the Forsyth County News, The Winder News and the Gwinnett Daily News from The News Company. Swartz-Morris Media purchased the Forsyth County News in 1994. In 2018, the Forsyth County News was purchased by Metro Market Media, along with the The Times of Gainesville and the Dawson County News. For most of its history, the FCN was a weekly newspaper, but in the early 1980s it became twice-weekly publication, adding a Sunday edition to the Wednesday publication. A Friday edition was later added, and a complete website came online in 2009. In 2018, the Forsyth County News added a digital replica edition of the print newspaper to the online component.

FACES OF FORSYTH

Cindy Iacopella

Forsyth County Animal Shelter Position: Manager Years in position: 2 Years in Forsyth County: “I moved to Georgia from New York five years ago, but I just moved from Cherokee County to Forsyth County [June 4.]” Favorite thing about position: “Helping the community by bringing pets and people together. Helping to advance the animal-human bond to save homeless animals’ lives is my No. 1 joy.” Most challenging thing about position: “Combating pet overpopulation, and resources for the more difficult-to-place animals. We’re the only open-admissions shelter in Forsyth County, which means we take everything in. We don’t turn any resident or stray away, so we sometimes have challenging animals — behaviorally and medically — so it’s finding resources to help save lives.” Favorite thing about Forsyth County: “Our elected officials are huge animal lovers, and they embrace progressive programs and lifesaving work here in the county. We have a dynamic county manager and deputy county manager that are also supersupportive of our work. That’s been really, really rewarding. “And Forsyth County in general, the community are huge animal lovers. They want to adopt, they donate, they volunteer.”

Barry Head

Forsyth County Fire Dept. Position: Fire Chief Years in position: 6 months Years in Forsyth County: 50 years Favorite thing about position: “Serving our citizens and providing a needed service to them. Just being a part of the community.” Most challenging thing about position: “Balancing the budget with the services that we provide and would like to provide. We want to do more, but we can’t.” Favorite thing about Forsyth County: “The people. The people are what makes the community what it is and what provides the quality of life that we have here.” 6 | Life in Forsyth | 2019

FACES OF FORSYTH Kristin Morrissey

Forsyth County Board of Education Position: Board member, Chairwoman Years in current position: 9 Years in Forsyth County: 15 Favorite thing about position: “Being able to see and celebrate the successes of our individual teachers, schools on a daily basis. It can be so inspiring looking in and seeing students at any age working independently or in groups experimenting and working as a team.” “I really enjoy connecting parents and students to the right person in the school system to help them address a need or concern they have. As a parent of two, I have often had the same question myself so I can relate to how much there is to learn especially for newcomers to the county.” Most challenging thing about position: “I would say, like any job, time management is probably one of the most challenging parts of the job. As board members we work primarily from home, but we are often on the road traveling to meetings or events in addition to attending our regular meetings at the board of education. No two days are the same, so keeping up on where we need to be and staying up to date on information is harder when we’re not at our desks!” Favorite thing about Forsyth County: “My family and I are avid outdoor enthusiasts and love to take advantage of Forsyth’s great parks, campgrounds and library services.”

Ron Freeman

Forsyth County Sheriff ’s Office Position: Sheriff Years in current position: 2 ½ years Years in Forsyth County: 40 years Favorite thing about position: “Without a doubt it is the relationship between FOCO citizens and the Sheriff’s Office. It is an incredible partnership and trust that is serving us so well to keep Forsyth safe. Getting to help good citizens is an incredible reward.” Most challenging thing about position: “Our growth and meeting the challenge of criminals who travel to our community to commit crimes. It is a non-stop vigilance tempered with taking care of our citizens’ quality of life and keeping our kids safe.” Favorite thing about Forsyth County: “That while we are now a large community, we still treat one another like a small community and support our own citizens in need. FOCO is my home and has been an incredible place to raise my family and one I want to ensure is just as incredible for others to raise their families.” 8 | Life in Forsyth | 2019

Lynn Jackson

Northside Hospital Forsyth Position: Administrator Years in current position: 18 Years in Forsyth County: 20

Favorite thing about position: “It allows me the opportunity to show that there is a friendly, compassionate and personal side to health care.” Most challenging thing about position: “Keeping up with the rapid growth and constant change occurring in the industry.” Favorite thing about Forsyth County: “It still has a small town feel where people know each other, help each other and work together to make the community better.” Lynn grew up in Decatur. If divorced, it is not necessary for you to bring in a copy of your final decree of divorce; however, you should have a certified copy of the final decree in your records. Occasionally, a person believing himself or herself to be divorced will discover that is not the case because someone forgot to obtain, or file, the final decree. The license fee is $56 payable by cash or check. The fee is reduced to $16 upon presentation of the court form certifying pre-marital counseling. The form and requirements may be obtained from the Probate Court office in person. Applicants must be at least 18 to apply without parental consent. For ages 16 and 17, parental consent rules apply. FACES OF FORSYTH

“Our schools are among the top in the state, even the nation. We’re a stone’s throw from the big city, but have an identity all our own. But the longer I live here, it’s obvious that it’s our community, our people that make Forsyth County the unique and wonderful place we call home.”

Laura Semanson

Forsyth County Commission Position: Board member, Chairwoman Years in current position: 3 Years in Forsyth County:18 years Favorite thing about position: “My favorite aspect of serving on the Board of Commissioners has been getting to meet so many people from across Forsyth County who really care about our community, and being able to help our citizens realize their vision for the future.” Most challenging thing about position: “As with many things in life, there going to be times when we don’t agree on a path, even in those situations where we agree on a destination. The pace of growth has made the transition from a residential exurb of metro Atlanta to a fully-realized community painful at times, but that improves as citizens become more engaged in the process.” Favorite thing about Forsyth County: “That’s a tough question. The natural beauty of the area was a big draw for me. We are blessed to be surrounded by the Chattahoochee River, Lake Lanier, Sawnee Mountain, the many creeks and streams, and the hardwood trees and rolling topography of the Appalachian foothills. We have top flight amenities with our extensive trails, parks and libraries.

Jim Pryor

Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Position: Director Years in current position: 5 years Years in Forsyth County: 5 years Favorite thing about position: “I have always had a passion for sports and recreation. It is great to come to work every day surrounded by other professionals with the same passion. The leaders of Forsyth County provide the resources necessary for our department to be successful.” Most challenging thing about position: “The inability to provide everything for everyone.” Favorite thing about Forsyth County: “Forsyth County is a community that embraces its quality of life. It’s a vibrant community that expects to be great in all facets.”

Forsyth County Commission Chairman Laura Semanson was elected in 2016 to serve the 201720 term representing District 5, which encompasses an eastern sweep of the county including the Lake Lanier region. Semanson was elected by the Board of Commissioners to serve as secretary in 2017, vice chairman in 2018, and chairman in 2019. She has served on the water and sewer, finance, and social services committees, as well as the Lanier Joint Development Authority, Georgia Mountains Regional Commission, Atlanta Regional Transportation and Air Quality Committee and Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District. Semanson is a graduate of the University of Florida. Her prior career experience focused on marketing and corporate communications management in the information technology sector. She is also a former small business owner. She and husband David have three children: Ethan and Matthew, who attend college, and Natalie, a sophmore at Lambert High School.

Greg Allen

Forsyth County Clerk of Courts Position: Clerk of Courts Years in position: 11 years Years in Forsyth County: 48 years Favorite thing about position: “Being a part of and managing the fastchanging duties and new technologies in the office. The Clerk’s office is not a static entity, we move quickly to take advantage of new options and implement cost-saving technologies for the public.” Most challenging thing about position: “The intricate decisions that must be routinely made interpreting thousands of laws, court rules, and appellate court decisions we must follow and comply with in the performance of our duties — without practicing law or dispensing legal advice to anyone.” Favorite thing about Forsyth County: “The people. I don’t think people realize how kind Forsyth County people are, just genuine, down-toearth good people.” 2019 | Life in Forsyth | 11

FACES OF FORSYTH

Casey Tatum

Cumming Police Department Position: Chief of Police Years in current position: 7 Years in Forsyth County: 50 Favorite thing about position: “One of the most rewarding things about this job is the ability to do something that makes a difference. Whether it be an employee with a problem, a victim of a crime or a citizen with some type of complaint, if I can do something that makes someone’s life a little better, even if just for a short time, that’s the most rewarding feeling to me.” Most challenging thing about position: “The speed at which information, accurate and inaccurate, travels today is simply amazing. Trying to get ahead of false narratives with accurate information, without jeopardizing the law enforcement operation, can be extremely challenging. We want to be able to give everyone the whole story immediately, but it takes time to gather the information and present it factually.” Favorite thing about Forsyth County: “Although I have relocated to Dawson County, Forsyth County will always be considered home. Several of my family members, including my parents, still reside in the county and I am thankful for the local amenities they can access. I am honored to serve a community that supports me and my department.”

Private schools, colleges Pinecrest Academy

University of North Georgia

Pinecrest Academy is a private PreK3-12, college preparatory Catholic school. Founded in 1993, Pinecrest Academy opened its doors at a former elementary school in Crabapple, Georgia, with a student body of 29. At that time, Pinecrest was the first independent, private Catholic elementary school established to serve Atlanta’s expanding Catholic population. The school moved in 1997 to its permanent campus on Peachtree Parkway in south Forsyth. Initially just a lower school, the beautiful 68-acre campus grew to also include a middle school and high school, a beautiful chapel, two gymnasiums and three athletic fields. Pinecrest is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Southern Association of Independent Schools, and holds membership in the College Board and the National Association for College Admission Counseling.

The University of North Georgia is part of the University System of Georgia and is designated as a State Leadership Institution and The Military College of Georgia. With more than 18,000 students, the University of North Georgia is one of the state’s largest public universities. The university offers more than 100 programs of study ranging from certificate and associate degrees to professional doctoral programs. Positioned in the fastest-growing region of the state, UNG comprises five campuses united by a single mission focused on academic excellence and academic and co-curricular programs that develop students into leaders for a diverse and global society. The University of North Georgia was formed through the consolidation of North Georgia College & State University and Gainesville State College, two of the top-performing schools in the University System of Georgia, in January 2013.

Instead of different days like in years past, both fireworks and the Thomas-Mashburn Memorial Steam Engine Parade will be on July 4th. The parade is in the morning and the fireworks will be after dark. Between the two events will be a July Fourth celebration at the Cumming Fairgrounds.

Take an art class The Sawnee Association of the Arts has nearly 100 members working in a variety of media, including oil painting, pottery, wood, jewelry and more. Most of the races fundraise for a good cause and many have a theme. Some of the most popular are the Boulder Dash — which takes runners through an active quarry — the costume-clad Superhero Run and the Jingle Jog during the holiday season.

Northside Hospital Forsyth As one of the most respected and trusted health care organizations in the Southeast, Northside Hospital is committed to balancing clinical excellence with compassionate care. In Forsyth County, Northside Hospital Forsyth is again expanding its services in 2019 to provide the region and the community with greater patient access to quality medical care. Construction on six new operating rooms (ORs) has begun within the hospital’s Center for Advanced Surgical Technology. Expected to open in October 2019, the new rooms will bring the hospital’s total number of ORs to 24. The hospital also is in the process of moving and expanding its outpatient infusion center in order to better accommodate patients who need infusion or chemotherapy services. Last year, the completion of a fifth medical office building on the Northside Hospital Forsyth campus brought orthopedics under one roof — spine, expert joint replacement services, and sports medicine and physical therapy. Northside Hospital Forsyth is a regional leader in same-day joint replacement, performing more surgeries than any other Georgia hospital.

By the numbers Beds: 304 Employees: 3,100 Physicians: 650 Volunteers: 327 Patient encounters in 2018: 508,745 Admissions in 2018: 15,273 Births in 2018: 3,071 Surgeries in 2018: 14,428 Emergency Department visits in 2018: 62,015

Northside Hospital offers expertise that ranks in the Top 10 robotic surgery programs in Georgia, meaning patients with post-sports related injuries and osteoarthritis return to a better quality of life much faster. The hospital’s Women’s Center recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Northside is nationally renowned for its maternity services, including its Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). More than 3,000 babies were born at Northside Hospital Forsyth in 2018. Northside Hospital Forsyth continues to lead the way in heart and vascular care, earning quality achievement awards, once again, for heart failure, heart attack and

stroke care from leading accreditation groups. The hospital’s cardiology team and emergency department staff work collaboratively with Forsyth County and Central EMS to ensure that patients receive access to care. Patient transfer times are ahead of the Atlanta region’s average of 76 minutes. The largest private sector employer in Forsyth County, with more than 3,100 employees, Northside was ranked by as one the Best Places to Work, across all top large employers in the United States, on both Glassdoor.com and Comparably.com.
