A salon that’smore than hair

Salon’s new location brings a feeling of home to their clients

After 20 years in their location, a local salon finds a new location with a more personal and luxurious atmosphere.

Walking into a new salon can be intimidating. You have to trust your stylist completely to create the look you want.

That’s why Berni Leonard, founder of Berni inc. and the team want to make you feel right at home.

Berni said when she opened her first salon in 2002, her goal was to open a salon that offered a

high-end experience with a homey feeling in downtown Cumming. That salon grew from a one-chair salon to a seven-chair salon over the years.

Despite a new name, she hopes to continue that same dedication to her customers in their new space that she did in the original space. The team is passionate about creating a laid back luxury experience while giving the guest an experience they will remember. Our team is incredibly talented and passionate about what they do.

“We are in such a special industry,” she said. “To all of us at Salon Five Twelve, it’s so much more than doing hair. We get to build relationships with clients and celebrate life’s biggest moments and walk through some of their hardest times. We get to make each person sitting in our chair feel more beautiful and confident than when they sat down, and that’s so rewarding.”

When customers walk into Salon Five Twelve, they will be brought into one of the three styling rooms at the salon, or the extension room, where their stylist will create a custom service and take great care of them from the moment they sit down until they leave.

In 2012, Berni’s daughter, Jacque Hansard, joined her team and has now become coowner of the new location.

This mother daughter duo loves their work behind the chair but also loves investing in their team and in the community.

Berni and Jacque have developed an interesting strategy for managing their professional relationship.

“We have been working alongside each other for 10 years and have grown so much together as the years have passed,” Berni said. “We often get asked, ‘How [do] you work together?’ and we would say by eating ice cream. We always have the hard conversations when the timing is right; normally, it would be when we were both calm and, typically, eating ice cream.”

The duo said that at the core of the salon, they follow five values: balance, teamwork, leading, respect and serving.

Salon Five Twelve is in a house built in 1940 on Dahlonega Street. The address has a lot to do with the new name.

“We started with the name of it, and came up with Five Twelve,” Jacque said. “We would talk to each other and be like, ‘Hey, we’re going to 512,’ or, ‘We’re at 512 today,” so we just said, ‘I think that should be the name of the salon.” Jacque also said that there’s an unexpected significance behind the name of Five Twelve.

“When [Mom] looked it up, it means ‘to be blessed,’ or, ‘blessings.’” She said this is a reference to the words of Matthew 5:12 in the Bible.

There’s unique differences that set this space apart from

their other location as well.

“With Five Twelve, it’s a little bit more private,” Jacque said.

The rooms are now further apart, more spacious, and they have added a special “relaxation room,” which is where their shampoo chairs are located. Most of all, the staff wants you to feel right at home, just like they do, when you arrive. “Inside the house when you first walk in, it just has such a good feeling to it,” she said. “It feels like you’re home.”

Whether you’re needing lived-in color, balayage, traditional highlighting, haircut, Handtied or Invisible Bead Extensions, our talented team is here for you and looks forward to you having a seat in their chair.

Anytime someone is looking to lose weight or improve their overall health, one of the first questions they ask is what kind of exercise should they try.

Should they lift weights? Began an intense cardio routine? Or maybe even start doing HIIT workouts?

Others want to join a gym but there is also a lot of fear and intimidation that can go along with joining a gym.

There are as many different workout options available as there are different weight loss methods.

Given the fact that recent studies have found a sedentary lifestyle can be as detrimental to our health as smoking, many people have started looking at different options to increase their movement and get in more exercise.

There are as many different workout options available as there are different weight loss methods.

But the good news is, finding a way to get some exercise doesn’t necessarily mean a big investment or joining a gym. It can be as easy as lacing up some tennis shoes and heading out your front door.

WHY WALKING

Walking is not only one of the most effective ways to get in movement, but it has tremendous health benefits as well.

Some of the benefits include:

 Helps reduce blood pressure

 Eases joint pain – motion is lotion!

 Helps lower blood sugar

 Boosts your immune system

 Burns calories

 Reduces stress

Walking is also something that has a lower risk of injury. Oftentimes, people may not have the proper technique with certain exercises or may overdo it; with walking, they are doing a low-impact exercise that doesn’t have many of the potential injuries that other exercises may have. (There may still be risks of falling or tripping, so please proceed with caution and safety.)

Walking is also free – you can get started with just a decent pair of shoes.

HOW FAR SHOULD YOU WALK?

If you’re not sure how far or long you should be walking, the main thing is just get started. If you haven’t been very active previously, five minutes can be a good target to start with and you can build up from there. Many health apps recommend 10,000 steps a day, but for many, that may be too much. The key is to start with an achievable and doable amount of steps that you can consistently reach. Just get moving. You can stretch the goal to a higher number as you feel comfortable with the pace you’re able to walk.

You definitely don’t have to walk a long distance if you’re just getting started. A good key to remember is that 2,000 steps roughly equals a mile, so if you were hitting 10,000 steps, that would be five miles a day. If you don’t have a step counter device or don’t have a pedometer on your cell phone, you can also roughly estimate it as approximately 15 - 22 minutes is equal to a mile.

WHAT IF YOU CAN’T GET IN STEPS?

There may be some obstacles to getting a walk in. The weather – either too hot or too cold – is one of the biggest obstacles that many people encounter. There are several indoor walking videos that are available on YouTube that can help you get in those steps in the comfort of your climate controlled living room. Additionally, walking in place is even a great way to get in your steps. Some people enjoy walking in place while they watch a favorite program or during the commercials.

Another option can be using a treadmill but that’s really not necessary. You can also go to an indoor mall to get in steps or walk extra laps around your grocery store. Just finding creative ways to get in a few extra steps can help you reach your goal.

So if you’re looking to incorporate exercise into your routine, walking is anything but basic and a great way to get in movement and improve your overallhealth.

Strategies to encourage kids to read more

Children have much to gain from reading and being read to. According to the Children’s Bureau of Southern California, a nonprofit organization devoted to strengthening vulnerable children, their families and the communities where they live, reading aloud to children supports their cognitive development; improves their language skills; prepares them for academic success; increases their discipline and ability to concentrate; and improves their imagination and creativity. Many of those same benefits apply to kids who read on their own, which may be more appealing as kids advance through elementary school and aspire to become more independent.

Allow kids to read the same book. Parents of young readers or children learning to read undoubtedly know how much children like to read the same book over and over again. Though that might not engage moms and dads, experts note that allowing kids to read the same books again and again is an effective way to foster a love of reading in children. Researchers have linked reading

the same books again and again to greater vocabulary acquisition and improved reading comprehension, among other benefits. Kids are more likely to enjoy reading if they recognize more words and can better understand the stories, so parents can encourage kids to read the same books again and again.

Take a book along when running errands or traveling. The Children’s Book Review notes that books can be just as handy in cars as tablets and other devices kids use to watch movies while on the go. Though some children may get car sick when reading while a car is in motion, those who don’t have plenty of time to read while in the backseat. On long road trips, promise a movie after kids have read for an hour. When running errands with the kids in tow, encourage them to read by keeping a couple of books or magazines in the backseat at all times.

Enroll kids in library reading programs. Summer reading programs

sponsored by local libraries have been found to be conducive to promoting reading in young children. In its report titled “The Role of Public Libraries in Children’s Literacy Development,” the Pennsylvania Library Association indicated that preschool and summer reading programs encourage children to spend significant amounts of time with books and also encourage parents

to play a greater role in their children’s literacy development. Participation in such programs is typically free of charge, so there’s no reason why families cannot take advantage of these highly effective programs.

Reading benefits children in myriad ways. Parents can look to various strategies to foster a love of reading in their children.

POTENTIAL SUBSTITUTES when you’re missing an ingredient

When cooking or baking at home, few things can prove as frustrating as preparing a dish only to realize you’re missing a key item from the ingredients list. Such realizations often force cooks to stop what they’re doing and make emergency trips to a nearby grocery store.

That can delay dinner time or make cooks feel rushed when they ultimately return from the store. But what if there was a way to substitute ingredients without risking flavor? Thankfully, there is.

According to AllRecipes.com, cooks can easily make their own ingredient substitutions if they suddenly realize they’re missing an item listed in a recipe and don’t want to run to the store. But many substitutions won’t be direct, meaning 1 tablespoon of a particular ingredient will not always translate to 1 tablespoon of a substitute ingredient.

6 signs your pet has dental issues

Pets use body language and other cues to let their owners know how they are feeling.

While certain actions, such as a vigorously wagging tail signaling that a dog is quite happy, are easy to read, it’s not always so easy to determine how a pet is feeling.

Pet parents who are trying to provide the best care possible recognize that pets may make them aware of certain health issues. Diseases of the mouth may cause issues elsewhere in the body if left untreated. Fortunately for pet owners, dental issues are often easily recognized.

1. HALITOSIS

Bad breath is a strong indicator of a dental problem. Halitosis may stem from tooth decay and gum issues, as well as gastrointestinal problems. In either case, it’s best to address a pet’s bad breath with a veterinarian.

2. VISIBLE PROBLEMS

Take a peek inside of the pet’s mouth. Animal Wellness magazine says that if there’s a significant accumulation of tartar (yellow or brown patches on the tops of teeth along the gum line), or if the gums are inflamed and red, periodontal disease may be to blame.

Traces of blood in the mouth also can

indicate that there is a problem. Pets don’t always like their mouths touched, so if your pet is being difficult, have a vet conduct a comprehensive oral health and treatment appointment (COHAT).

3.

REFUSING TO EAT

There are many reasons a pet may not want to eat, and a dental problem may be one of them. Painful teeth and gums can make eating challenging, so the animal may avoid food. Refusing to eat can lead to weight loss and malnutrition, so it’s best to nip this issue in the bud.

4.

SENSITIVE MOUTH

Your pet may yelp, bite or scratch if you touch around the mouth area when there is a dental problem at play. Drooling excessively or dropping food from the mouth also are signs that things are awry.

5. LESS GROOMING

Cats spend around 10 to 15 percent of their days grooming. Dental pain can

make grooming challenging. Therefore, if your cat is grooming less or looks unkempt, it may be due to dental problems. Great Vet says 85 percent of cats over the age of three have some form of dental disease.

6. OVERGROWTH

Rodents’ incisors (front, gnawing teeth) grow continuously throughout their lives. Typically the incisors receive continuous wear as the upper and lower incisors contact each other. However, if incisors are misaligned, they may not wear down effectively.

Some incisors can grow out of control, piercing the roof of the mouth and into the nasal cavity. If a rodent’s teeth look long, that could warrant a vet check.

Pets can experience periodontal disease and other dental conditions. Staying aware of signs of dental issues can keep pets healthy.
