Miss Niki leads CDA to more dance accolades Life-long dancer Niki Jernigan-Watkins had a dream of turning her passion and talent for dance into a teaching career and bringing the magic of dance alive for others. Driven by her passion and talents, Miss Niki as she’s fondly known by students, is realizing that dream for a 13th year running as the owner and artistic director of Cumming Dance Academy. Given her professional history and accolades for performance and teaching, it’s no surprise that Cumming Dance Academy has succeeded with Miss Niki at the helm. Not only does CDA offer many different types of dance and musical theater classes, but Miss Niki also implements a “Character Development Program” in which the students incorporate a different self-esteem word and discuss it each month in their classrooms. CDA is overflowing with awards and recognitions, all the while managing to teach young dancers about a well-balanced life. Committed to the youth of this community, she has taught thousands of young ladies how to grow, dance and gain confidence through her academy, classes and guidance. Miss Niki opened the original CDA in 2003 and has enjoyed watching it grow and flourish into a place where many call home! Beginning her training at age 3 with Carol Eason School of Dance and PritchettPippin Studios in Americus, Watkins is classically trained in ballet, jazz, tap and pointe. Since graduating from Valdosta State University with a bachelor of fine arts in theater/dance, the college has recognized her as a “distin-
guished alum.” She has received awards from numerous publications and organizations, including the 2012 Small Business of the Year by the CummingForsyth County Chamber of Commerce, and was one of eight named Forsyth’s Business Leaders Under 40 by the Forsyth County News. In 2015, she was named one of 25 “Most Fascinating People” in Forsyth County. Of her beloved CDA, Miss Niki has been quoted: “I am incredibly blessed to work with an amazing group of women who not only share my love of dance, but also my love of children and young people. Over 75% of our students have been with us since we opened our doors; I think that speaks volumes for both our studio and staff. We teach these young ladies, we grow with them, we learn with them, but most of all — we love them.” Watkins is a busy studio owner, dance instructor, and also manages to raise a 6 year old son, Cash who has grown up in the studio. “I am one of the lucky few who is fortunate enough to wake up and love my job each and every day.” CDA classes are led by a professional staff with decades of experience and impressive performance credits. CDA has many performance groups for the more dedicated who want to experience more than the weekly dance class. Her performing companies travel and compete each season. Fine art and custom framing gallery popular in Forsyth Anthony Gallery began operations at Vickery Village in 2012 bringing a unique fine art gallery and custom framing service to the area. They’ve aligned with some of the most talented artists throughout the world as well as a select few local artists. According to owner Bryan Smith, “The gallery’s mission is to put fine art into the hands of people who love it, and to provide a quality custom framing service at remarkably affordable prices.” Anthony Gallery staff’s vast knowledge of the art industry and keen eye for design gives them a leading edge with custom framing. Their designers use this knowledge to passionately
help each customer find the best design that is right for them. During our interview with Bryan Smith, we asked about his decision to come to Forsyth County over other metro Atlanta areas. “We noticed how underserved Forsyth County was with respect to the arts. We wanted to change this and the character of Vickery Village made sense. Many people in the community enjoy decorating their homes with unique quality art, and custom framing their own special memorabilia. People are tired of mass produced low quality wall décor. They’re eager for something refreshing,
something with meaning. We fill this gap.” The gallery showcases approximately two dozen artists. Among their unique styles are abstracts, photo realistic, surrealistic, impressionistic, expressionistic, cubism, and more. The gallery provides a variety of price points to accommodate multiple budgets. Beyond art and custom framing the gallery can also be rented for special events. Since opening the gallery has hosted fundraisers, book signings, holiday parties, corporate events, rehearsal dinners and weddings. The gallery exceeds the standards of even the most discerning event planners.
The space graciously accommodates up to 92 guests for a formal seated banquet, or 173 for an elegant reception. Included in this offering are washrooms, a kitchenette for catering, sound, music, telephones, and dramatic special lighting effects. Dr. Jim Morrow devoted to patients and community Dr. Jim Morrow has been practicing family medicine in our community since 1998. In June 2011, he opened a solo practice where he combines old fashion care with the best technology available. He believes that these are the building blocks required in order to give his patients what they want and deserve from a family doctor. Dr. Morrow has served on multiple boards over the years giving his time and expertise to a variety of community needs. In 2014, he was named the Entrepreneur of the Year by the Cumming Forsyth County Chamber of
Commerce and was also named t h e Community Leader of the Year by the Metro Atlanta Chamber. Now, Morrow Family Medicine has now been named “Best of Forsyth” two years in a row. Children’s Healthcare focusing on future Since Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta moved to Forsyth in 2011, the staff has seen more than 50,000 patient visits, treating everything from the flu to shin splints. Children’s offers another important, life-changing pediatric service in Forsyth — the early detection of developmental delays in infants. With a new eye-tracking screening device, clinicians are able to see the world through the eyes of a child. The screening will detect how infants perceive their environment. The eye-tracking device works by using cameras that focus on a child’s eyes. Short videos and images are shown to the child, and when his eyes move, the cameras can tell what part of the scene he is watching.
Most children focus on people’s eyes and faces, but infants at risk for autism tend to focus on objects and movements more than their typically developing peers. By detecting these risk factors earlier, the hope is to catch conditions, such as autism spectrum disorders, or ASD, at the earliest possible stages. Currently the average age of diagnosis of ASD is when a child is about 5 years old. If discovered early, this screening can lead to a life-changing early intervention. “We can now make a difference,” said Ami Klin, director of the Marcus Autism Center and professor and chief of the division of autism and related disorders at Emory University. “Anything we

do within this window of opportunity will have lifetime consequences for the patients.” Warren Jones, director of research at Marcus Autism Center, said they “study how children with autism look at, and learn from, the world.” “Literally, we measure every movement of a child’s eyes while he looks at other people, quantifying how much time a child spends watching other people’s eyes or watching other important social gestures,” Jones said. Studies show that the earlier a child is diagnosed with autism and starts treatment, the better the outcome. Klin and a team of researchers came to Atlanta from Yale University to launch the largest research
effort for children with autism and related disorders in the country — a collaboration between Marcus Autism Center, a subsidiary of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and Emory University School of Medicine. Klin and Jones agreed that the most important partners in this new program will be pediatricians who screen patients in well-baby checkups and refer families with babies or young children at risk for autism. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening children for ASD at 18 months and 24 months and asking about social and emotional developmental milestones at every well-child checkup. Northside Hospital-Forsyth expanding and enhancing its services Northside Hospital is one of the most respected and fastest growing health care organizations in the Southeast, and Northside Hospital-Forsyth is no different. In fact, in the 14 years since Northside purchased the Cumming hospital, it has seen tremendous growth. That growth doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Today, the 1-millionsquare-foot Northside Hospital-Forsyth medical campus has more than 2,600 employees and 2,400 physicians and includes the 231-bed hospital, a Women’s Center, an advanced surgery tower and four medical office buildings. More than 400,000 patient visits were served last year across a full range of medical services. Construction is currently
under way on three additional floors to the hospital, which will bring the hospital’s inpatient bed count to 247 and the total number of beds, including observation, to 330.
