Doctor treats people, not names on a chart When Dr. Gary Berliner opened Chestatee Emergent Medical Care in Dawsonville nearly 14 years ago, he had one over-arching goal in mind. “The first thing about treating patients is to be a person. That’s why I don’t wear a white coat, because it creates a barrier,” he said. ”When a patient walks in the door, they aren’t separated by a sheet of glass. They go to triage next to be assessed and then see me for treatment. All the time we want this to be open for them and give the patients all the time they need.” When Berliner, who has been practicing medicine since 1993, first opened the office in Dawsonville, he only had four employees on staff - himself, his mother, his wife and a general manager. “I was a doctor for a year in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, the only doctor for 800 air miles,” he said. “You have to be selfreliant. A doctor in a rural community has to be able to do not just niche medicine, but all of medicine.” “I picked Dawson County because, at the time, it was the seventh fastest growing county in the country,” he said.

“There was only one group of company doctors at the time, but nothing on the inside of the county. The last eight doctors that had tried to locate in the county had failed because they couldn’t get insurance assigned.” “Word of mouth and convenient location made people realize we were here and we were busy before day one,” he said. “The first year exploded exponentially and we didn’t look back after that.” Berliner said that he wants to make his patients feel like people instead of just names on a chart. “We have three aspects for our nonemergency visits,” he said. “We want there to be a personable aspect, a timing aspect and an attention aspect to it. Patients should always find their doctors accessible to them.” Chestatee Emergent Medical Care is located at 2395 Thompson Rd, off of Hwy. 53. And can be reached at (706) 265-6866. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Karmen Pharris: Treating clients like family After four years with the Hometown Real Estate Group Inc., real estate agent Karmen Pharris makes it a point to treat people that she works with like family. “My job as a realtor is to educate about the process, advocate for my clients and always ensure they are happy with their purchase or sale,” Pharris said. Pharris buys and sells residential, land and commercial properties but said that her first-time home buyers are always fun to help. “They bring the whole family and I get to know them all,” she said. “And usually help them later.” Pharris holds a marketing degree from Arkansas State University and said she feels lucky to work for Elaine Black and her group. She has made it her mission to grow her business while helping others find what they are looking for. She wants to make the process easy for her clients.

She believes it is important to work hard and let God go ahead of you. “My referrals from past customers and friends are the greatest compliment,” she said. “I try to keep the process running smoothly and keep everyone calm. McEver Signs Goes Green Every business needs a sign, but if you aren’t a big chain, you may not know where to go. How do you design the sign? What if you don’t have a logo? Who will install it? These are questions smaller businesses face when opening a store front and it often means going to different contractors to meet all the needs. Now in its 11th year, McEver Signs continues to expand its services and is proud to announce the addition of a new, large format latex printer. This technology is environmentally friendly but still offers the long-lasting, vibrant colors that our solvent printers do. This also enables us to offer an even faster turnaround time on banners and signs. In most cases, we are able to offer next day and even same day service when needed. To meet the demand for a full service sign company that catered to small and medium sized businesses in North Georgia, Carter McEver started McEver Signs in 2006. McEver Signs is truly a family-owned and operated business and was chosen as Dawson County’s Best Sign Shop in 2016. “We strive every day to provide fast service and quality products at reasonable prices,” McEver said. McEver’s wife, Janie, also works in the shop where she assists clients, takes care of administrative duties and helps with sign fabrication. A professional graphic designer rounds out the staff at McEver’s to complete the most demanding projects. McEver Signs’ motto is “take your business to the next level,” and they help their clients do just that with a wide variety of products and servic-

es.

Their services include conceptual design, sign leasing, installation and manufacturing the sign. McEver Signs handles projects of all sizes, from small decals and yard signs to electronic message centers and pylon signs. One of the most popular items they sell is channel letters for businesses located in shopping malls. These signs are lit by low voltage LEDs and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. McEver Signs also provides a two year warranty on parts and labor on all of their electrical signs —one year longer than the industry norm. The entire project from design, permitting to fabrication and installation, is handled by McEver Signs so the client doesn’t have to worry about those details. With a focus on start-up businesses and small busi-

nesses looking to expand, McEver Signs can help their clients come up with a new image to energize their existing business. By surveying the client’s property and existing signage, McEver Signs is able to provide recommendations for new signage or suggest how to improve what is already in place for both the interior and exterior of the business. Sometimes, all it takes is a facelift on your sign to draw in new customers, and McEver Signs can help you come up with that new look your business needs. Not only does McEver Signs offer a full range of exterior/ interior signage, they also offer trade show items from table cloths to entire pop up booths. Having a cohesive look in your marketing materials at your trade show presents a strong message to potential clients. Another popular item

McEver Signs offers is banners. The full color banners are printed using solvent inks that last over two years outside. These banners can be used for a variety of applications from birthday parties to church and school events and have a huge marketing impact. For the small business clients, McEver Signs offers complete packages including exterior signs, window graphics, interior signage and vehicle graphics. McEver Signs also designs and installs full vehicle wraps to make a company vehicle a rolling billboard. This is a great way to increase your visibility, especially if you drive a lot, make a lot of deliveries, or have a high visibility location where your vehicle can be seen. Vehicle wraps are also highly noticeable and give you mobile brand recognition. Other signage products includes real estate signs, ADA signs for businesses, traffic and property restriction signs, and more. Whatever kind of sign you need, McEver Signs can make it.

7

McEver Signs is more than just a sign shop, they also offer logo design, business cards, post cards and poster printing. Marketing materials really make a lasting impression and having the right logo or poster can make the difference in how your business image is perceived. Additionally, they also create a custom design for each business – which means you won’t see your design on another business! Whether it’s a large exterior sign, or just one small sign for the inside of your business, McEver Signs is here to help. “Our greatest satisfaction comes from seeing our clients succeed,” McEver said. “Give us a call, we would love to work with you on your next sign project.” McEver Signs and Graphics is located at 355 Quill Dr., Dawsonville, 1/10 mile south of N o r t h G e o rg i a P re m i u m Outlets on Ga. 400. To find out more and see some of their work, visit www. mceversigns.com, or like McEver Signs on Facebook for updates.

Center offers compassionate childcare J a n ’s F a m i l y D a y c a re Center has been meeting the childcare needs of Dawson and Forsyth families since 1997. Owner Jan Whetstone and her staff strive to provide compassionate and loving care in a safe, clean environment. “I try to give my best each a n d e v e r y d a y, ” s a i d Whetstone. “I also try to treat

people the way I want to be treated.” Following that motto has afforded the center many accolades over the years, including being named “best daycare” in Dawson County on numerous occasions. All teachers are CPR and first aid certified. Additionally, all of the teachers at the center either have or are working to obtain

their child development associate’s degree. Among the center’s services are daily childcare and Georgia lottery funded prekindergarten. The center also offers an afterschool program, with student pickups at Robinson, Black’s Mill and Riverview elementary schools in Dawson, Chestatee Elementary in Forsyth and Blackburn in Lumpkin.

Children attending Kilough Elementary are bused daily to the center through the school system. The secret to running a successful local business, according to Whetstone, is keeping a positive attitude. “I do anything from driving the van to the schools to pick up the children for the afterschool program, to making lunch, taking out the trash

and covering a classroom,” she said. Located at 8455 Hwy. 53 East in Dawsonville, just minutes from the Forsyth County line and Ga. 400, Jan’s Family Daycare Center is open from 5:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Amicalola Propane delivers hometown heating needs Amicalola Propane is a family-owned and operated business in downtown Dawsonville dedicated to serving the area’s heating needs. “It was designed to be a small, family-owned business that would be passed along to o u r f a m i l y, ” s a i d M a t t Richardson, who along with his wife Kristin opened the business in 2003. In the early days, Matt spent his days making deliveries and running service calls, while Kristin ran the office. The staff has now grown to nine full time and several part time workers. “I feel like the small, family atmosphere has done us well. I love it that I know 90 percent of my customers on a first name basis,” he said. “Probably 90 percent of the customers out there still have

my cellphone number and still call when they need gas.” Having such a tightknit community support system has been vital to the company’s success. “I would love to thank the community. There wouldn’t be an Amicalola Propane if it weren’t for the wonderful people of Dawson County,” he said. Matt Richardson also credits the help of family, especially his father Dennis Richardson who passed away last year, with the success the company has achieved. “My first year, it was just so overwhelming and I called my dad, and I said dad, ‘I need help.’ He came up, dropped everything he was doing, moved his roots and came up to Dahlonega with my mother,” he said.

“Most the people you talked to thought the business was his, and I have no problem with that what so ever, because he was very key figure in what we’ve built today.” While the couple would love to see the business continue to grow, they strive to maintain that small-town feeling. “That’s what I love most about it--small business atmosphere. And I like to maintain that with a steady growth,” Matt Richardson said. “I don’t necessarily think that everybody in four counties should buy from us. Of course, that would be great, but it would lose its small town value.” Located on Hwy. 53 just west of Dawsonville, Amicalola Propane offers a full line of propane products, including a range of space heating options, tankless water heat-

ers, tank installations and just about anything else that involves the use of propane. Amicalola Propane provides propane sales, service and repair to farms, homes and businesses in Dawson, Forsyth, Lumpkin, Pickens counties, as well as the area of West Hall. The company has added a second location at 1236 Lee Chester Rd. to better serve customers in the Dahlonega a r e a . To c o n t a c t t h e Dahlonega location, call (706) 867-8522.
