Jan’s center offers compassionate care Jan’s Family Daycare Center has been meeting the childcare needs of Dawson and Forsyth families since 1997. Owner Jan Whetstone and her staff strive to provide compassionate and loving care in a safe, clean environment. “I try to give my best each and ever y day,” said Whetstone. “I also try to treat people the way I want to be treated.” Following that motto has afforded the center many accolades over the years, including being named “best daycare” in Dawson County on numerous occasions. All teachers are CPR and first aid certified.
Additionally, all of the teachers at the center either have or are working to obtain their child development associate’s degree. Among the center ’s services are daily childcare and Georgia lottery funded pre-kindergarten. The center also offers an afterschool program, with student pickups at Robinson, B l a c k ’s M i l l a n d Riverview elementary schools in Dawson, Chestatee Elementary in Forsyth and Blackburn in Lumpkin. Children attending Kilough Elementary are bused daily to the center through the school system.
The secret to running a successful local business, according to Whetstone, is keeping a positive attitude. “I do anything from driving the van to the schools to pick up the children for the afterschool program, to making lunch, taking out the trash and covering a classroom,” she said. Located at 8455 Hwy. 53 East in Dawsonville, just minutes from the Forsyth County line and Ga. 400, Jan’s Family Daycare Center is open f ro m 5 : 3 0 a . m . - 6 : 3 0 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 a.m.4:30 p.m. on Saturday. With two locations in historic downtown Dawsonville within walking distance of each other, both stores feature a warm and welcoming atmosphere filled with a wide variety of vintage wares and antiques from global vendors. The inventory offers items spanning from primitive, shabby chic, to mid-century, Americana and everything in between. Gift items, like soy candles, are on hand and home décor items like Faux Real Mineral Paint can also be found at Soul Sisters Antiques. Being able to offer quality products for home décor and a lifetime of collecting and selling antiques is what led Sandy Alexander, Linda Dinsmore and Kelly Edwards to open Soul Sisters Antiques and Home Décor. Sandy and Linda were experienced store owners of Paper Moon and Paper Moon Too, and had been handling estate sales when they met Kelly at the Lakewood 400 Antique market. The three just clicked and Soul Sisters Antiques was born. By offering competitive pricing, friendly service, qualityproducts, anddecorating ideas, Soul Sisters
Antiques has racked up numerousaccoladeswithin just a year of business. Last year, the store was voted 2015 Dawson County’s Best Antique Store and Dawson County Chamber of Commerce’s OutstandingNewMember. Just as Dawsonville has supportedthestore(s),Soul Sisters Antiques has embraced being in the downtown area of Dawson County. Kelly says the best thing about owning and operating a business in Dawsonville is meeting the residents. The co-owners attribute their success to being Christ-centered and being able to share the love of Christ with everyone. “We love being able to take care of our customers and find just what they need,” Kelly says. “God has His hand in everything we do and we feel led to make everyone who walks through our doors, warm and welcomed. It’s really special that God has given us this platform to share his love, who would have thoughtthroughanantique and home decor store we
would minister!” The three owners enjoy being very active with the Chamber of Commerce and hope to contribute to the revitalization of the historic downtown area as it continues to grow. The store also gives back to the community through the local chapter of Friends in Recovery, a non-profit helpingsupportindividuals recovering from alcohol and substance abuse. All proceeds from the sale of Junkie Jewelry, a line of jewelry created by a former intravenous drug user, goes to Friends in Recovery. In addition to buying, selling, and trading antiques, Soul Sisters Antiques also offers house staging and handles estate sales. Soul Sisters Antiques has two locations in historic downtown Dawsonville — 58 Hwy. 9 South and 33 Hwy. 53, right off the circle. Amicalola Propane delivers hometown heating needs Amicalola Propane is a family-owned and operated business in downtown Dawsonville dedicated to serving the area’s heating needs. “It was designed to be a small, familyownedbusinessthatwouldbepassedalong to our family,” said Matt Richardson, who along with his wife Kristin opened the business in 2003. In the early days, Matt spent his days making deliveries and running service calls, while Kristin ran the office. The staff has now grown to nine full time and several part time workers. “I feel like the small, family atmosphere has done us well. I love it that I know 90 percent of my customers on a first name basis,” he said. “Probably 90 percent of the customers out there still have my cellphone number and still call when they need gas.” Having such a tightknit community support system has been vital to the company’s success. “I would love to thank the community. There wouldn’t be an Amicalola Propane if it weren’t for the wonderful people of
Dawson County,” he said. Matt Richardson also credits the help of family, especially his father Dennis Richardson who passed away last year, with the success the company has achieved. “My first year, it was just so overwhelming and I called my dad, and I said dad, ‘I need help.’He came up, dropped everything
he was doing, moved his roots and came up to Dahlonega with my mother,” he said. “Most the people you talked to thought the business was his, and I have no problem with that what so ever, because he was very key figure in what we’ve built today.” While the couple would love to see the business continue to grow, they strive to
maintain that small-town feeling. “That’s what I love most about it--small business atmosphere. And I like to maintain that with a steady growth,”Matt Richardson said. “I don’t necessarily think that everybody in four counties should buy from us. Of course, that would be great, but it would lose its small town value.” Located on Hwy. 53 just west of Dawsonville, Amicalola Propane offers a full line of propane products, including a range of space heating options, tankless water heaters, tank installations and just about anything else that involves the use of propane. Amicalola Propane provides propane sales, service and repair to farms, homes and businesses in Dawson, Forsyth, Lumpkin, Pickens counties, as well as the area of West Hall. Amicalola Propane, at 383 Highway 53 West, Dawsonville, is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. For more information, call (706) 3441427.

Floyd Duncan started his career in exterminating with Orkin Exterminating, in 1969, quickly moving from a pest control route to sales. Several years later, he went to work for Getz Exterminating as the Gainesville area branch manager. Floyd found he had a desire to serve and be able to do more for his customers, so he and his wife Sherry, who also had experience in the exterminating business, founded Duncan Exterminating in 1981. When the Duncans first started the company, they operated out of their home in Dawsonville before opening an office in Gainesville and used Floyd’s pickup as the work vehicle. Now, all three of Floyd & Sherry’s children are a part of the team. Their sons, Matthew and Brett, have been with the company for more than 20 years, and their daughter, Tina Brady,
joined the team in 2009. Duncan Exterminating provides services for residential and commercial customers, ranging from pest control, termite, and wildlife services. The company holds certifications in Termite, Wildlife, Mosquito Control, and General Household Pest Control. Family and faith are two of the driving forces for Duncan Exterminating. The company describes serving others as a privilege and strives to do business with the utmost honesty, integrity, and quality. “Our foremost goal is to be of humble service to our fellow man. We believe that in serving others, we honor and please God, as exemplified by our Lord, Jesus Christ, when He walked on this earth,” is our sincere mission statement. Local agent buys Dawson County homes for cash DAWSON COUNTY — Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It’s what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it’s an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guaran-
tees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn’t sell in 120 in days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price endur-
ing that you never get caught in the Real Estate Catch 22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. When interviewing agents,
find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you’ll find that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee.
To help you learn more about this program and how you can make your move less stressful, a FREE special report has been prepared entitled “How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes.” To order a FREE Special Report, visit www. GeorgiaFreeHomeInfo.com or to hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1-800-204-3307 and enter 1072. McEver Signs and Graphics celebrates 10 years Every business needs a sign, but if you aren’t a big chain, you may not know where to go. How do you design the sign? What if you don’t have a logo? Who will install it? These are questions smaller businesses face when opening a store front and it often means going to different contractors to meet all the needs. To meet the demand for a full service sign company that catered to small and medium sized businesses in North Georgia, Carter McEver started McEver Signs in 2006. McEver Signs is truly a family-owned and operated business. Carter’s dad, Wylie, helps out in the shop and handles much of the assembly work. His wife, Janie, came onboard a year ago to help with the administrative work and assist in the assembly of products. A professional graphic designer rounds out the staff at McEver’s to complete the most demanding projects. McEver Signs’ motto is “take your business to the next level,” and they help their clients do just that with a wide variety of products and services. Their services include conceptual design, sign leasing, installation and manufacturing the sign. McEver Signs handles projects of all sizes, from small decals and yard signs to electronic message centers and pylon signs. One of the most popular items they sell is channel letters for businesses located in shopping malls. These signs are lit by low voltage LEDs and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
McEver Signs also provides a two year warranty on parts and labor on all of their electrical signs —one year longer than the industry norm. The entire project from design, permitting to fabrication and installation, is handled by McEver Signs so the client doesn’t have to worry about those details. With a focus on start-up businesses and small businesses looking to expand, McEver Signs can help their clients come up with a new image to energize their existing business. By surveying the client’s property and existing signage,
McEver Signs is able to provide recommendations for new signage or suggest how to improve what is already in place for both the interior and exterior of the business. Sometimes, all it takes is a facelift on your sign to draw in new customers, and McEver Signs can help you come up with that new look your business needs. Not only does McEver Signs offer a full range of exterior/interior signage, they also offer trade show items from table cloths to entire pop up booths. Having a cohesive look in your marketing materials at
your trade show presents a strong message to potential clients. Another popular item McEver Signs offers is banners. The full color banners are printed using solvent inks that last over two years outside. These banners can be used for a variety of applications from birthday parties to church and school events and have a huge marketing impact. For the small business clients, McEver Signs offers complete packages including exterior signs, window graphics, interior signage and vehicle graphics.
McEver Signs also designs and installs full vehicle wraps to make a company vehicle a rolling billboard. This is a great way to increase your visibility, especially if you drive a lot, make a lot of deliveries, or have a high visibility location where your vehicle can be seen. Vehicle wraps are also highly noticeable and give you mobile brand recognition. Other signage products includes real estate signs, ADA signs for businesses, traffic and property restriction signs, and more. Whatever kind of sign you need, McEver Signs can make it. McEver Signs is more than just a sign shop, they also offer logo design, business cards, post cards and poster printing. Marketing materials really make a lasting impression and having the right logo or poster can make the difference in how your business image is perceived. Additionally, they also create a custom design for each business – which means you won’t see your design on another business! Whether it’s a large exterior sign, or just one small sign for the inside of your business, McEver Signs is here to help. “Our greatest satisfaction comes from seeing our clients succeed,” Carter says. “Give us a call, we would love to work with you on your next sign project.” McEver Signs and Graphics is located at 355 Quill Dr., Dawsonville, 1/10 mile south of North Georgia Premium Outlets on Ga. 400. To find out more and see some of their work, visit www.mceversigns.com, or like McEver Signs on Facebook for updates.
