FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS

Friends of Forsyth 2018 FORSYTH COUNTY NON-PROFIT GUIDE Often cited as one of the wealthiest and healthiest places in the country, it is easy to lose sight of those around us in Forsyth County that may need a helping hand. I have no doubt in my mind that without the many who spend, and have spent, countless hours volunteering their time and resources, this county would not be where it is today. The Forsyth County News has put together this guide, and the website that accompanies it – forsythnews.com/nonprofits – to build a bridge between those who need the help and those that offer to help. The goal is to provide insight and education to those who need the services, as well as provide information to those who have gifts to give. Inside you will find contact information, as well as insight on what some of the county’s nonprofits offer. We are grateful to live in a place such as Forsyth, with countless opportunities and a great quality of life. However, we know there are people in our community who face tough obstacles every day. With problems ranging from domestic violence, literacy issues, addiction, hunger and illness, we encourage you to find a way to help. Helping does not have to come by way of monetary donations – many organizations would appreciate your time and energy just as much. Look through the pages and see if your talents fit a need. If so, give the agency a call and get involved. If you have a need, we hope this guide can lead you to those in the community who can help and maybe give you a hand up and lead to a happier life. GET KIDS EXCITED ABOUT VOLUNTEERING Volunteering benefits people of all ages, but can be especially beneficial to children. Studies have indicated that teenagers who volunteer are less likely to become pregnant or use drugs. In addition, in a review of 60 studies on child engagement, Child Trends found that children who participate in civic engagement programs are likely to be more involved in school, to graduate from high school and to hold more positive civic attitudes than those who do not get involved in such programs. Getting kids to volunteer as they progress through adolescence may not be so difficult. Older students might feel compelled to volunteer to improve their college admissions applications, but parents can take steps to get their younger children excited at the prospect of volunteering. Set a positive example. Young children want to emulate their parents, so moms and dads who volunteer may find ready and willing partners in their children. Parents can inform their children when they volunteer and why they do so before bringing kids along to join them. Don’t forget fun. Young children may be more likely to embrace volunteering if the activity is fun. Kids might not find it too fun to sit next to their parents while mom and dad balance a soup kitchen’s books, but a beach cleanup excursion or a trip to refurbish an inner city park may inspire kids to spend a lifetime giving back to their communities and helping the less fortunate. Keep it simple. Kids may not enjoy volunteering activities that consume too much time or make them feel exhausted. As kids grow older, parents can encourage them to embrace more challenging activities and/or commit more time to volunteering. But keep things simple with especially young children or older children who have never before volunteered. Try and try again. It might take some trial and error before parents find volunteering opportunities their children truly enjoy. When volunteering with children for the first time, be careful not to commit to more than one day. If children enjoy themselves, then parents can commit more time. If kids do not seem excited by an activity, parents won’t feel guilty or let the charity down by not returning.

MAKE THIS THE YEAR TO BUDGET FOR CHARITABLE GIVING Budgets are an important component of personal financing. Without a thorough understanding of the rate of money going in and out of their bank accounts, people cannot accurately assess their potential for spending and saving. Budgets are also handy for paying off debt and planning for the future. Those who budget may find they have more money to devote to leisure or other worthwhile endeavors, such as donating to charity. Establishing a charity budget makes it possible for people to focus on doing good and helping others. Charitable giving also comes with the beneficial side effect of establishing extra tax deductions for some individuals. Many people only think of charitable giving at the end of the year, when the holiday season tends to inspire philanthropy. However, many people’s endof-year finances are already stretched thin thanks to holiday shopping and entertaining. As a result, men and women who wait until the end of the year to donate may not be able to be as charitable as they would like. That’s why focusing on charity as part of a yearly budget can stretch dollars even further. By examining their finances, people can get a better picture of how much money they have for discretionary spending, including charitable giving. However, income alone may not dictate just how charitable a person can be. For example, according to a McClatchy analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the poorest Americans often donate larger percentages of their incomes than their wealthier counterparts. Generally speaking, the typical amount most people aspire to donate to charity ranges from 3 to 10 percent of taxed income. To make a charitable giving budget work, consider these tips: Make a list of charities that have meaning to you. If you do not have specific choices, select categories, such as politics, education and community, and then go from there. Assess your giving ability in dollar value. Be sure charitable giving does not come at the expense of necessary daily living. Divide the available funds against the charities selected. Set aside specific times of year that you will make the donations so as not to feel burdened at any one time of year. Leave an emergency fund for donations that cannot be planned, such as disaster relief or to help someone with medical bills. Budgeting for charitable giving enables greater year-round control of funds for beneficial purposes. Friends of Forsyth | 2018 FORSYTH COUNTY NON-PROFIT GUIDE | 15

CHARITIES THAT HELP CHILDREN IN NEED Having a child or becoming a parent or caregiver to a youngster can change a person profoundly. Perhaps that’s why many people will rally to do whatever is necessary to offer assistance when children become sick, injured or need help. Children’s charities can pluck at the heartstrings, but prospective volunteers or donors should still do their homework and research a given charity before deciding to help. Charity Navigator, the Better Business Bureau and other watchdog groups are great sources of reliable information that can help prospective donors make smart giving decisions. Researching children’s charities also may shed light on some of the lesser known charities that do excellent work. The following are a handful of children’s charities whose missions may resonate with those who want to help. 18 | 2018 FORSYTH COUNTY NON-PROFIT GUIDE | Friends of Forsyth

WAYS TO LEND A HELPING HAND TO SENIORS Giving back to seniors in your town or city is another way to strengthen your community. Many seniors maintain their independence long past retirement age, but some may need a helping hand as they get older. Deliver meals. Seniors who are confined to their homes typically need to have their meals delivered to them. Men and women looking to help seniors can volunteer to work with their local Meals on Wheels program. Meals on Wheels boasts a national network of more than 5,000 independently run programs, and these programs rely on more than two million volunteers to deliver nutritious meals to seniors with limited mobility. The need for volunteers to help seniors figures to grow in the coming decades, as Meals on Wheels America notes that the percentage of the population that qualifies as seniors will grow to 26 percent by 2050. Help around the house. The work required to maintain a home is considerable no matter a person’s age, but that task is even more difficult for seniors. Even the healthiest seniors may not have the mobility or physical strength required to keep up with household chores. Offering to help a senior maintain his or her home is a great way to improve their quality of life. Invite seniors over for dinner. Many seniors suffer from feelings of isolation, which can contribute to depression. Families are now more geographically diverse, and a senior’s children and grandchildren may not live nearby. In such cases, it’s easy for seniors to grow lonely and feel isolated from their communities. Inviting seniors over for a weekly dinner or to backyard social gatherings can help them maintain a connection to their communities and reduce their feelings of isolation. Arrange transportation for seniors who no longer drive. Many seniors stop driving when they realize their skills behind the wheel have diminished. But even though they may relinquish their drivers’ licenses, seniors still need to keep their doctor’s appointments and get out of the house. Many seniors made valuable contributions to the communities they call home. And those communities can give back by helping seniors overcome the demands of aging.
