Central’s Panetta aiming for the GBI, FBI

Sydney Panetta has been on the Forsyth Central High School mock trial team the past three years, and the experience has given her a good feel for what life is like as the underdog. The Bulldogs had not qualified for the region championship, let alone won it, in 13 years.

Until this past school year.

Panetta and Central won the region championship, besting biggernamed schools with more established leadership.

“Getting to beat some of the bigger-named schools, it’s very rewarding as the underdog,” Panetta said.

Panetta’s involvement in mock trial dovetailed with her future aspirations for a while. She considered being a lawyer or a politician, but she’s outgrown those ambitions. Now, she plans to double major in criminal justice and Arabic at the University of Georgia and dreams of working at the FBI. At Central, Panetta found a place that nurtured all her ambitions and talents. In addition to participating on the mock trial team, she was vice president of the Student Council for two years, president of Beta Club and was a part of Central Ambassadors, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, DECA and the girls’ soccer program for two years.

“It’s an easy place to want to be,” Panetta said.

“I wouldn’t be anywhere else.”

Q: What college did you choose to go to?

A: The University of

Georgia. It was actually the only place that I applied. It was bold, an optimistic choice. … I’ll be challenged consistently as an intellectual and also as a person, but it’s still home enough to where I think I can thrive without feeling an undue amount of pressure.

Q: What do you have planned as your future major?

A: I’m looking at a double major in criminal justice and Arabic. I think everybody should major in a language. That’s a weird personal opinion of mine. But Arabic specifically is extremely employable.

Q: What was your favorite subject?

A: AP U.S. history.

That was largely because of the teacher. His name was Mr. Prince, and he is no longer here but was here for probably a solid decade, maybe two. I think it was a class that

more so taught you how to think rather than what to think.

Q: What was your least favorite subject?

A: I’m not a math person. I have never been.

Probably freshman year honors pre-calculus was my only B, and I was heart-broken.

Q: Who was your favorite teacher?

A: Her name is Michele Dugan. She coached our mock trial team for the first year that I was on it.

She became not only a teacher and a coach, but also a friend and a confidante -- just this vessel of useful, intelligent inform a t i o n . I n s o m a ny aspects, she’s what I want to emulate as a person.

Q: Do you have a favorite school tradition?

A: Probably the Friday night lights, the football games. They harbor a very strange sense of tight-knit community.

The Central Crazies (stu-

dent section) have been persistent throughout Central’s history. It’s very much a thing people want to be a part of. You wait to be the senior who’s leading the roller coaster.

You get to buy a T-shirt with your name on it. It’s very much a thing that students put on a pedestal.

Q: What was your best school memory?

A: This year was my third year on the school’s mock trial team, and I’ve been the captain for the last two. … This year was the first time in 13 years that the Central team made it into the region championship and then won the region championship. Getting to beat some of the bigger-named schools, it’s very rewarding as the underdog.

Q: What has been your toughest challenge in high school?

A: How to balance involvement. I’m very

much somebody who wants to have a hand in ev e r y t h i n g a n d j u s t stretch myself as thin as possible. I think the biggest challenge has been figuring how to prioritize and manage the things I want to be significant to me, and probably understanding that I can’t do everything.

Q: Favorite TV show?

A: The Office.

Q: What is your least favorite household chore?

A: After I take my clothes out of the laundry and fold them, I would rather let them stack up 9-feet tall than actually put them away. That’s very much so a way that I live.

Q: What is your one nervous habit?

A: When I need to hyper-focus on something, I just harbor this really irrational opinion that if I study anywhere other than a coffee shop, I’ll just be studying inad-

equately.

Q: What are you most talented at?

A: I do think I’m pretty good at public speaking.

Not necessarily crowd control. I’m not necessarily an entertainer. But I think if anybody needed a professional speech done, I think I’d be closer to the top of a list for it.

Q: What are you least talented at?

A: I have no rhythm. I move up and down and maybe side to side sometimes. I’m the least graceful.

Q: What is something many don’t know about you?

A: I sucked my thumb until I was 9 years old. I don’t tell anyone that.

Q : W h a t a re y o u r career aspirations?

A: I’d like to pursue an international affairs-oriented career, ideally in pursuit of a humanitarian, women’s struggle-oriented field. Ideally, I’d like to apply to the FBI. I’ll probably start with hopefully an internship at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, ideally gaining some experience there before I apply to the FBI. Q: Do you have any advice for next year’s seniors?

A: Maybe once every few days, maybe once a week, there is some interaction that I have with somebody where I think, I wish I would’ve invested in this person sooner and deeper. Why did I go so long without fully appreciating this person’s presence? So if I had to give advice, it would just be fully appreciate your time with the people around you, because it’s invaluable, and there’s no telling which direction they’re going.

From Forsyth Central High School Principal Mitch Young Dear Class of 2018, Congratulations! You made it to the finish line of the first major phase of your life. You not only successfully crossed it, but you made a lot of great things happen along the way, and I have been blessed to watch you do it. While it may seem like a long time to many of you, to me the past four years has flown by.

So many exciting things have happened during your time.

The Student Union Building — aka the STUB — has transformed your campus, bringing everyone together figuratively and literally, while also eliminating the need for swimming across Lake Central on rainy days.

Your STEM Academy has received not only statewide certification, but is now one of only 32 nationally-certified programs in the country.

Your Flash of Crimson has grown to become one of the largest marching bands in the area, putting on incredibly exciting shows.

Your engine-building teams continue to dominate the state and have received national renown.

Your robotics program has become the bar-setters against which so many others are compared.

Athletically, you are now battling against your sister schools in the highest level of competition the state of Georgia has to offer. You have boasted top 10 teams at state in cross country, competition cheerleading, gymnastics and have

broken into the playoffs in soccer, softball and baseball.

Groups like DECA, TSA and HOSA continue to grow to new heights while racking up accolades in state and international competitions.

You have challenged yourselves unlike any graduating class in school history by taking and passing more Advanced Placement courses and exams than ever recorded.

Most importantly, whether you have participated in clubs, teams, organizations or not, more of you are graduating on time and are headed into the workforce, military service and college in greater numbers than ever before!

Nothing makes me happier than to drive through a mall parking lot and see FC magnets on cars, or bump into you at the movies and see you wearing your school colors. While Central used to be the best kept secret in the county, your class has led the way to making the C-House the place to be!

As I have told you many times before, the Class of 2018 will always hold a special place in my heart. We started here together just four years ago, and I have been honored to be a part of your experience.

Lambert’s Lin headed to Yale for pre-med

Lambert High School graduate Chen Lin is headed to the Ivy League but plans to take lessons from Forsyth County with him.

Starting this fall, Lin will attend Yale University, where he plans to go into pre-med.

Linn said he is very interested in biology and neuroscience and took advantage of opportunities at Lambert to take part in biology labs. He said he prefers the hands-on approach to learning in a lecture.

At Lambert, he has been involved in a variety of school clubs including student council, Future Business Leaders of America and HOSA-Future Health Professionals.

But don’t write Lin off as only an academic. In addition to his studies, he also shadows medical professionals at Northside Hospital, helped plan some of the school year’s biggest events and has hung out with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

Lin sat down with Forsyth County News to answer some questions about his future plans, favorite memories from Lambert and his next steps in life.

Where are you going to college?

Next year I am going to attend Yale University. The school attracted me because they have a great neuroscience program and I really love the residential college system there, so I’m looking forward to a great year.

I’ve already made so many great friends during Bulldog Days, so I’m really highlyinterested in the community that the school has.

What is your future major?

I have always been extremely interested in how different sys-

tems in the human bodies connect with each other. I’m interested in pursuing pre-med.

[I am] fascinated by the brain and the different connections, just how this organ can control all of the bodies functions. I think it’s incredible. And it is a rapidly developing field, so that’s why the major is really attractive to me.

What is your favorite subject?

My favorite subject is definitely biology because I’ve always been interested in how c e l l s i n t e r a c t . I ’ve b e e n i nvo l ve d w i t h a s u m m e r research project at Lambert. It’s called the Young Dogs program, so I’ve been involved with that.

It has taught me so many things in terms of wet lab research, and I have just grown as an individual and as a student through the program, and

that got me really excited about biology.

Also I took the AP biology class here and the class was lab-based, so I really enjoyed doing labs alongside other peers and broadening my learning in that aspect.

What is your least favorite subject?

That’s a tough question. My least favorite subject, I feel like it depends on the year. It depends on the time of the year and the workload the classes heap on me.

The thing that I have with math is starting junior year, I took AP Calculus … I tried to study the materials over the summer in a previous class.

The class turned out to be a little harder than I anticipated.

However, I think I really enjoyed the class at the end of the day even if it was a huge amount of work because I wel-

come the challenge and that experience of really having my back against the wall, just really having to work to be able to get to where I want to be is just a really challenging but yet really rewarding experience at the end of the day.

Who is your favorite teacher at Lambert?

My favorite teacher is Ms. [Doris] Dickerson. She is a part of the healthcare department at Lambert. They have a phenomenal, phenomenal program.

In high school, I actually go out and intern at Northside Hospital Forsyth, where I shadow nurses, physicians, pharmacists, physical therapists, so I get huge exposure in the healthcare field and get to look at different things for example, how they are doing stuff in a laboratory. It’s just a very interesting experience.

What is your favorite

Lambert tradition?

As a student council member, I’d say homecoming every year is a really, extremely fun event.

Since I’m part of student council, I work with fellow student council members and our wonderful advisor Ms. [Jennifer] Wilson on planning homecoming in terms of decorations, how the hallways are going to look.

We choose a theme every year for homecoming. It’s a huge project and a huge amount of work, but at the end of the day, to see people enjoying the event and seeing people having fun at the homecoming football game, having them introduce the homecoming court on the football field and having them attend the homecoming dance and just having a great time with your peers, I just think there’s nothing comparable to that.

What was your toughest challenge in high school?

I think my toughest challenge in high school, in terms of academics, would definitely be trying to catch up in AP Calculus.

What I did was I studied part of the course, pre-calculus, over summer, but when I got to the class I felt less prepared than my fellow peers and it was a challenging experience trying to catch up while trying to master lessons.

It turned out to be a tremendously rewarding experience, because I feel like that class, out of all the classes I took at Lambert, really challenged me.

What is your favorite TV show?

My favorite TV show would be “Stranger Things,” and that’s partly because I met Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the character Eleven in “Stranger Things,” in New York.

We co-hosted an event called the UNICEF 70th Anniversary.

I serve as a national UNICEF officer. I’m part of the UNICEF National Council. So, I was chosen as part of a team to represent the voices of youth at the event.

We co-emceed the event together, and we introduced some amazing, amazing goodwill ambassadors such as Jackie Chan, Orlando Bloom, David Beckham, so it was a huge experience and really got me exposed to the commercial

world and how public figures really promote UNICEF and promote the rights of children everywhere.

What would you pick as your senior year song?

Personally, the song I stick to is Hall of Fame by the script.

It’s just a hugely motivational song that I listen to sometimes when I’m working out.

In terms of representing the whole grade, I think everyone has their own interpretations and come from different walks of life, so they definitely have their own differences of songs.

What is your least favorite household chore?

Earlier this year, I had to

organize our basement, so that was not fun. It was a mess before we organized everything. I took me literally the entire day.

What are you most talented at?

I love to swim. I swim during the summer.

I really enjoy being in the water and just exercising, having fun with friends.

Conversely, what are you least talented at?

I play tennis. I love tennis.

The only downside is all my friends tell me, all my family tells me, I’m horrible, absolutely horrible at tennis, but still, I love the sport and I try to get

my family out there on the court every weekend. So if anyone knows how to play tennis better, definitely hit me up.

What is something many may not know about you?

I keep a gratitude journal, so that’s part of my morning ritual. I believe that being thankful for what I have every day and just appreciating the small things in life really is a powerful way of dealing with the stress and the negativity that people, especially how school students … run into every day.

I think being grateful and just enjoying the small things in life is very important.

What are your career goals?

My goal right now is going to be trying to become a physician in the future. I’m definitely keeping my options open because I understand interests can change over time, so I’m just trying to learn as much as I can and dive into the field to get to know every aspect of medicine and what I want to pursue in the future.

What is your advice for next year’s seniors?

Start early on your college application process, and enjoy the journey and take it one step at a time.

North’s Ahn passionate about helping others, planet

T h i s p a s t s u m m e r, JoAnn Ahn was in the Detroit Metropolitan Airport for a layover on her way to visit family in South Korea when she noticed a world figure most high school kids wouldn’t have recognized.

In a lounge sat Ban Ki-moon, the South Korean diplomat who served as secretary general of the United Nations from 2007 to 2016. Ahn went over to introduce herself, and the North Forsyth High School senior proceeded to express her admiration for the UN’s work on environmental and human rights issues.

“He spoke to me and said, ‘People like you who are young and passionate are the reason why people are able to m a ke c h a n g e i n t h e world,’” Ahn said. “It kind of spoke to me in such a big way, because he has such a big role in t h e wo r l d . I t r e a l l y inspired me.”

Ahn now knows her dream career: working at the UN. To get there, Ahn plans to attend Georgia Tech where she’ll double major in environmental engineering and international affairs, a perfect complement of her passions.

Her interest in the environment seems to have come innately.

“If you really knew me — a lot of my friends if they really, really knew me — they know that I love the environment, and I would track down a person if they didn’t recycle their water bottle,” Ahn

said. “I’d be like, ‘Hey, go throw that in recycling.’ And they always tease me about it.

“It’s just one of those things where ever since I was little I was in love with nature and the fact that I see so much damage happening to the environment, especially from human causes, it’s just been on my heart to pursue that.”

Her interest in international humanitarian causes grew more from personal experience. Her father owned a business in Lima, Peru, and Ahn remembers traveling with her mother to visit him when she was 11 years old. There she was exposed to levels of poverty she hadn’t previously experienced. Ahn was struck by the peoples’ dire circumstances, but also the joy that persisted.

“So many people are hurting out there,” Ahn said. “I kind of feel like I don’t want to be a part of the reason why people look at statistics and say, ‘Hey, that’s just the way humanity is.’ I want to (help) find solutions to problems.”

Ahn found a way to do that at North. She was copresident of Simple Charity, a student organization that aimed to raised $100,000 to fight global poverty. She was a Raider Commander who mentored freshmen. She served on the school’s Student Council and was vice president of Class Council as a sophomore and senior.

To find out more about JoAnn, the FCN sat down with her at North to talk about school, passions and the future.

Question: What college

did you choose to go to?

Answer: I’m going to attend Georgia Tech this fall. I want to pursue engineering, so I saw that it was the best fit for me to go to one of the best universities in the country that offers engineering, especially since it’s in state.

Q: What do you have planned as your future major?

A: I’m double-majoring in environmental engineering and international affairs. A little bit of both science and social studies.

Q: What was your favorite subject?

A: I really love everything. I find myself in so many different areas of study. I would say my favorite class of all time would be AP U.S. History and AP Calculus.

Q: What was your least favorite subject?

A: I just finished a Georgia Tech math class, and I looked at math differently this year. I took linear algebra and multivariable calculus, and I just realized there’s a lot of math out there. I didn’t really enjoy the experience.

Q: Who was your favorite teacher?

A: That’s such a hard question. There are so many. But overall, my ninth-grade English teacher, Mr. (James) Bassett. He has such a big role in everyone’s freshman year experience. And I think Ms. (Amanda) Swofford for AP Calculus. I’m the type of person who asks so many questions, because I need to know why. She would explain so patiently, and she just loves her kids.

just loves history, and he wants you to love history, and he makes the class feel like 10 minutes.

Q: Do you have a favorite school tradition?

A: The homecoming parade. It’s honestly one of the most fun things ever. One year you could throw candy at students waiting outside. I had the privilege of being in it last year and this year for Homecoming court, and it was so much fun. It’s just one of those moments where everybody comes together.

Q: What was your best school memory?

A: Two years ago, when one of our own p a s s e d a w a y, Tr e n t Basden. I was on the committee for Unite Forsyth for a night in May where we could just come together and have worship. That was planned ahead of time.

And then, all of a sudden, that same week, Trent passed away in a freak accident. It was two days before the event was supposed to happen. It was just so crazy to everybody. I didn’t know him personally, but he did take my orders at ChickFil-A. We all knew what kind of person he was.

We had the Unite Forsyth service, and so many people came, and we celebrated his life. It was one of those very special times. I think a lot of people were touched by it.

Q: What has been your toughest challenge in high school?

A: I think befriending people that are very, very different from me. I used to be very introverted.

so many great upperclassmen that year, and they really mentored me. They really helped me out. I saw how they treated underclassmen and how they carried themselves, I really wanted to embody that.

Now, I wouldn’t say I’m very extroverted, but I’ve come out of my shell quite a bit.

Q: Favorite TV show?

A: The Office.

Q: Senior-year song?

A: “Rivers and Roads” by The Head and the Heart would have to be the ideal senior song.

Q: What is your least favorite household chore?

A: This is going to sound really weird, but I really like chores. Like washing dishes and cleaning is my jam.

Q: What are you most talented at?

A: I love music, so I play piano, and I play the guitar. A little bit of ukulele.

Q: What are you least talented at?

A: I think one of my biggest insecurities is catching something. Like anything. If people throw me a shirt or a pen or a football, I’m like, ‘I’ve got to catch this!’ I need to figure out my hand-eye coordination skills.

Q: What is something many don’t know about

you?

A: I participated in junior-senior wars, and a lot of people are surprised when I tell them I teepeed somebody’s house the night before Homecoming court and the day of a test. I hope my image doesn’t become tainted. It’s just a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I won’t ever do it again.

Q: What are your career aspirations?

A: One of my biggest dreams is working for the United Nations. Whether that be an ambassador or working with children or for UNICEF or that kind of thing, that would be awesome. But realistically, probably just finding a non-profit organization that I can work for. The people the world turns their face away from, I have a heart to find those people and help their situation. Not be their savior but show them that life (can) get better. If any career offers me that (chance), I’m in.

Q: Do you have any advice for next year’s seniors?

A: Just the idea of not wishing it away. Not wishing away your year. Not rushing the year. Just really soaking in every moment you have with your friends and your teachers and the community you probably won’t see next year when you go to college.

South’s Murray headed to West Point

South Forsyth High School graduate Paul Murray knows not everyone has the same freedoms we have as Americans, and he wants to change that.

This fall, Murray is headed to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

But before he heads that way, he was able to talk with Forsyth County News about what made him want to join the military, his toughest challenges in high school and how hard it is to pick a favorite Star Trek captain.

Where are you going to college?

I’m going to the United States Military Academy at West Point. My main reason for doing so is even though I might not look like it right now is that I am part Venezuelan, I have a lot of family that is down there who have suffered a lot through Hugo Chavez and [Nicolás] Maduro.

That has been more of a push and a drive for me, personally, being that we in America have so many freedoms that many take for granted. I have family right now that I’ll probably never get to know ever, and them suffering kind of inspires me to make sure that others don’t suffer the same thing, especially here in America.

What is your future major?

I’m still a bit undecided, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to be in engineering with maybe a minor in business or econ.

What is your favorite subject in school?

History. I’m very much a fan of the quote, ‘those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.’ I’ve always found it interesting that when I study history or read a new book on whether it be like the Civil War

or World War II, I always find out something new, just an interesting fact that’s been lost and obscure, not taught. I just find that interesting.

What is your least favorite subject?

Language Arts. My grammar is definitely not the greatest. I struggle with it a lot. Every time I have a paper or an essay and I get it in to get grammar checked, there are so many corrections to make.

Who is your favorite teacher at South?

I’ve thought long and hard about this, and my official answer is I can’t decide. So many teachers throughout all my years have helped me become who I am now, and some of them have definitely been helpers. One of them gave me a recommendation to get a nomination to attend the service academy.

So, a lot of them have helped

me a lot, so I can’t decide on that.

What was your toughest challenge in high school?

I had a few. I guess academically it would be IB program, the career pathway. Some of those requirements, I had to stay up a lot longer than I usually do to make sure I was completing it.

Overall, I have to say becoming an Eagle Scout and getting into the United States Military Academy are my two toughest challenges I’ve faced.

What is your favorite TV show?

No, but I do have a favorite band: Pink Floyd.

What is the worst household chore?

Mowing the lawn, especially when I have to bag all the clip-

pings. I’m out there for hours sometimes, and I get all dirty and messed up. I just hate.

I’m fine with mowing. It’s bagging it and clipping it that I can’t stand.

Do you have any nervous habits?

When I’m sitting down, occasionally I shake my leg a bit, one of my legs, it doesn’t matter. Or I talk to myself.

What are you most talented at?

Chess, political knowledge and leading. I’ve had a lot of experience leading. I was president of a few clubs here at school. Through scouting, I’ve always been one of the top leaders. I’ve been senior patrol leader [and] junior assistant scoutmaster, which are the two senior positions within scouting. And I’ve always been commended by the adults on my leadership capabilities.

Conversely, what are you

least talented at?

Golf. I can’t swing the club if my life depended on it, can’t swing at all. Every time they’re even forcing my hands to do it, I just can’t. It just feels so weird.

What is something many don’t know about you?

I collect coins and currencies.

I have a national complete quarter set, and I’m working on the national parks right now. I collect currencies from all over the world. I like their designs, and they’re fun to have. Of course, at that point, I have to keep looking at the exchange rates to see if it’s actually of any value or not.

What are your career plans?

I haven’t thought that far because part of West Point is you are required afterward to serve in the military as your payment.

I have to serve for a certain amount of years, and afterward I’m still deciding whether or not to continue down the military path or transition to civilian, maybe political or economic sort of way.

There are multiple branches within the Army. The ones that I’ve looked into the most are military intelligence, armored, adjutant general and engineer corps but I’m still deciding. I have a few years on that.

Any advice for next year’s seniors?

Cherish the memories and the friends that you have made throughout high school because especially once you head off to college, it’s a lot harder to even keep in contact with some of them because you could be going all around.

West Forsyth’s Gran excels at academics, on court

Emma Gran, an 18-yearold graduating senior at West Forsyth High School, has lived in Forsyth County her whole life and is preparing to step out into the world for the first time, to college and a career beyond.

According to West Forsyth High School Principal Karl Mercer, she is an “amazing young lady.”

He said that her hard work and achievement in a variety of different interests makes her stand out among her peers.

“I have seen her on the court playing basketball, I have seen all the awards that she’s won and I’m amazed and proud that she’s part of the West family,” Mercer said.

In her time at West, Gran won a number of awards for her academic achievement including the University of Georgia certificate of merit, a national merit special scholarship and attending the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, according to school administration.

Q: What college are you planning to attend?

A: I will be attending the University of Notre Dame. I love the entire feel of this school. Its Catholic roots would allow me to grow in my faith, its community style dorm-life would allow me to develop familial relationships with other students and its beautiful campus feels like home. Notre Dame provides top-notch academics, numerous studyabroad and research opportunities, and it teaches the skills necessary to grow as an individual. Being a student at Notre Dame will

prepare me for a promising career and allow me to connect with one of the strongest alumni networks in the world.

Q: What did you pick for a major?

A: I plan to double major in statistics and economics.

I want to combine my love of social science with my interest in mathematics, so I will have a strong baseline for a career in economics, business statistics or data analysis.

Q: Do you have a favorite subject?

A: My favorite subject is Social Studies. I like learning about history and other cultures, which has expanded my perspective of the world. Studying government and economics helps me understand the complexities of the world around me and helps me become a well-informed, discerning citizen.

Q: Do you have a least favorite subject A: My least favorite subject is science. Science is interesting, but it can be difficult to grasp the complex details. I enjoy applying course material to the real world, so I’m challenged by the theoretical aspects of scientific courses, like physics.

Q: Favorite teacher (and why): A: My favorite teacher was my AP World History teacher, Bo Brison. His class was exciting and engaging. It helped me discover my passion for social studies and Mr. Brison motivated me to learn more.

Also, Mr. Brison is the school’s Rho Kappa (Social Studies Honor Society) Sponsor. I serve as the Rho Kappa President, so I have been able to work with Mr. Brison to inspire other students to take an interest in social studies. Working with Mr. Brison has strengthened our relationship beyond the scope of his AP World History class.

Q: Favorite school tradition (and why): A: I enjoy being a part of the Gulo Gang (the West Forsyth Student Section) at Friday night football games.

It feels great to unite with the other students and promote a sense of pride in our school. I enjoy dressing up in themed apparel and cheering on the football team alongside my classmates.

Q: Best school memory (and why): A: Last year, I had the opportunity to travel to

Washington D.C. to witness the inauguration of the President of the United States. Mrs. Tallant, our school’s AP Government teacher, organized this trip for a group of juniors and seniors at our school. We spent a week in the city where we visited key landmarks, including the monuments, memorials, Smithsonian museums, Supreme Court building, U.S. Capitol building and Mount Vernon. Standing on the National Mall to witness the Presidential Inauguration was an experience of a lifetime.

Q: Toughest challenge in high school (and why): A: Balancing my academic schedule with my extracurricular activities and my community involvement. AP classes involve a lot of outside work, which meant that I had to work on my time management skills.

I wanted to have enough time to focus on my classes

while participating in activities like basketball.

Q: Favorite TV show: A: The West Wing Q: Senior-year song A: “Now or Never” — High School Musical 3 Q: Worst household chore (and why) A: Washing the dishes. I find it gross to put my hands in the dirty dish water.

Q: Nervous habit (and why) A: I fidget when I get nervous. It helps calm my nerves in stressful situations Q: Most talented at A: I like to think academics and school in general. I have an interest in a variety of subjects, and I have always worked hard in all of my classes.

Q: Least talented at (and why) A: Singing. I love to sing but I am tone deaf.

Q: Something many don’t know about you A: I used to be a dancer for 10 years, but I stopped

when I got to high school.

Q: Career aspirations A: I would like to pursue a career that showcases my knowledge in economics and statistics. This could be a career as a business statistician, economist, or data analyst. I ultimately want to contribute to an organization that will allow me to demonstrate my skills while helping the organization achieve its goals and objectives.

Q: Advice for next year’s seniors A: Commit yourselves to your studies and academic excellence, while taking the time when necessary to slow down and enjoy your senior year. Everybody counts down the days to graduation but remember to appreciate every day.

High school goes by in the blink of an eye, so don’t forget to cherish every moment of it.

Horizon’s Susong formed deep friendships at school

Denver Susong was looking for a change.

Susong had been attending Covenant Christian Academy, and he loved it, but after seven years he felt like he needed to experience a new environment.

So Susong transferred to Horizon Christian Academy for his junior year of high school, willing to take the uncertainty of being the “new guy” if it meant personal growth.

“That’s a big change,” Susong said, “especially when you don’t know anybody.”

He soon fixed that. A few months into the school year, Susong went with others in his class at Horizon to Woodlands Camp, a Christian retreat center in Cleveland, Georgia. They spent a week playing games and going to chapel. He came back with deeper friendships and felt like he belonged at Horizon.

Susong went on to make his mark at the school in just two years. He played sports (basketball, football and track). He performed in theater productions. He became secretary of the school’s student government and president of its National Honor Society chapter. He competed in National History Bowl (and won a state title) and Quiz

Bowl. He joined the school’s marketing team and helped teach Spanish to younger students. And just last week, Susong found out he is Horizon’s Class of 2018 valedictorian.

To find out more about Denver, FCN sat down with him at Horizon to talk about school, passions and the future.

Question: What college did you chose to go to?

Answer: “Georgia. I picked UGA because it’s a great school, in state (and) I can get Zell Miller Scholarship.”

Q: What do you have planned as your future major?

A: “Probably business.

I’m not totally sure yet. I’m also interested in some sciences, like biology or neurology. (For business), first of all, my dad’s an entrepreneur. He owns two businesses. It’s always kind of been in my life. That obviously played an impact.

Also, just how there’s a business side to everything.

There are a lot of options you can take with it. Then, from a leadership standpoint, I just like the idea of leading others.

“I’ve always been interested in the way peoples’ brains work, the way that they think and interact and why people think things. I find myself thinking about why I think things myself all the time.”

To the Class of 2018, Congratulations on your graduation from high school! It has been a blessing to watch you grow and embrace leadership roles at our school. Along the way, you have demonstrated an emphasis on hard work and serving someone beyond yourself. We often discuss the “Colossians 3:23” lens through which we view servant leadership, and your achievements prove that you have placed that worldview into action.

Q: What was your favorite subject?

A: “I like a couple, and they’re all kind of even. ...

I’d say either human anatomy or AP government.

Anatomy, because I’m interested in biology. AP Gov, because it was one of the classes that I learned a lot from, and more so I find myself using what I learned (in) daily life when I’m seeing different political systems or the news.”

Q: What is your least favorite subject?

A: “I’d say math. I’m not very geared toward math naturally.”

Q: Who was your favorite teacher?

A: “I would say (academic advisor) Lisa Stiles, because she’s been the most helpful to me, especially applying to colleges. She’s always more than willing to advise me and help me with the future.”

Q: Do you have a favorite school tradition?

Each of you gave back to our school community and beyond through acts of service and seasons of influence. I have watched you faithfully lead athletic teams through both winning and losing seasons, engage younger students in Bible study discussions and develop projects that will leave behind a legacy of impact at HCA. Thank you for committing to the idea that while you have personal goals to achieve during your academic career, you still pursue them while serving others

A: “Team building, which is where we all go up to Woodlands Camp in Cleveland, Georgia, and we spend about a week there just having fun, doing games, have chapel, stuff like that. You have a team, and you guys all work together to win the week.

It’s just really fun.”

Q: What was your best school memory?

A: “Last year’s team building. It was actually my first year coming to school.

I’ve only been here for two years. It’s earlier in the year, so it’s kind of a time to get to know everybody, get integrated into the school, form better relationships with people and have fun.

Q: What has been your toughest challenge in high school?

A: “Transferring schools.

I’d been at my last school for seven years, since elementary school. That’s a big change, especially

around you.

A strong work ethic and the recognition of a calling to serve a unique purpose are powerful qualities to bring to the workforce. I am excited to think of the influence you will continue to have on others and in shaping organizations in the years to come simply by committing yourselves to true servant leadership. A: “I guess learning. I just pick up on things easily, and I like to break them down

A: “I’ve visited so many places. I’ve been all over the U.S. We’ve taken some trips out west where we’ve RV’d through eight states. I’ve been to Alaska.”

Q: What are your career aspirations?

A: “Something businessoriented, but I can’t say for sure right now. Find a specific passion to devote myself to. I get very focused on one thing and just really involved in it.”

Q: Do you have any advice for next year’s seniors?

A: “Enjoy it while it lasts.

It does go by pretty quickly in the end. Keep trying new things. And finish strong. I know a lot of people have trouble with that, and I’ve had some bad senioritis too, but just push through it.”

Pinecrest’s Adams plans tobe photographer, filmmaker

Sam Adams, the oldest of five siblings, has lived in Cumming his whole life and has spent his whole schooling career at Pinecrest Academy.

Adams, an avid new photographer, said that he picked up a camera professionally for the first time recently when he took a photography art class and found an artistic creativity and passion he had never felt before.

“I had always been interested in cameras, but always thought I didn’t know what I was doing,” Adams said. “And I needed an art credit, so I thought ‘well I can’t draw or paint, so I might as well do something for the computer.’”

He said that as he began taking pictures with his mom’s old camera he found that he was enjoying the process and that he was actually good at it.

His art teacher, Alison Stone, said that he has done a “phenomenal job” photographing interesting and unusual subject, “giving them a voice through his photography.”

“He’s just a man of integrity

through and through,” Stone said. “He started doing digital imaging last year and just fell in love with the process.”

To find out more about Sam, FCN sat down with him at Pinecrest Academy to talk about school, passions and the future.

Q: What college did you chose to go to?

A: Well I first got into UGA and I was going to go there, but I applied at SCAD and got in and it was way too expensive, and they came back with some more money. I really like SCAD because they set you up for success beyond college. But first, I will be going on the World Race Gap Year, which is a nine month mission trip to four countries, and I will be going to Cambodia, Ethiopia, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

Afterwards I will go to SCAD in Atlanta.

Q: And what do you have planned as your future major?

A: Photography, it’s what I’m passionate about, and A, I’m told I’m good at it, and B, I like capturing people’s emotions and telling their stories.

Q: What was your favorite

subject?

A: History, it’s just interesting to hear about what people did in the past and how they screwed up.

Q: What is your least favorite subject?

A: Math, I’m just not a numbers guy. I have never been the greatest at it, I always pull out a calculator.

Q: Who was your favorite teacher?

A: Mr. Podomolik, he always made the class engaging and kept it applicable to our lives.

A: Friday night football games, I liked that they got all my friends together in one place.

Q: What was your best school memory?

A: My Senior Mission Trip to Nicaragua, it was a great final class trip, and we got to see and experience things that I would have never imagined.

Q: What has been your toughest challenge in high school?

A: Starting my own photography business, there is nothing as tough as figuring out a new business.

Q: Favorite TV show: A: The office.

Q: Senior-year song: A: Everyday – Logic.

Q: What is your least favorite household chore?

A: Mowing the lawn, we have a huge lawn and it can get really hot.

Q: What is your one nervous habit?

A: Biting my nails. It has been since I was little.

Q: What are you most talented at?

A: Photography.

Q: What are you least talented at?

A: Ironically enough, drawing or singing.

Q: What is something many don’t know about you?

A: I am an avid NASCAR fan.

Q: What are your career aspirations?

A: A professional photographer/travel photographer or a filmmaker.

Q: Do you have any advice for next year’s seniors?

A: Live in the moment because it will all be over in a flash, and take advantage of every opportunity that you possibly can.
