America (QMA) is a non-profit organization with more than 2,500 family memberships and approximately 4,000 drivers. There are 13 regions and fifty Quarter Midget clubs nationwide. Quarter Midget Racing is for children ages 5 to 16 years. It is a family-oriented sport that involves racing in specially prepared cars. The cars, rules and safety procedures are designated specifically for kids. Participants race on oval tracks approximately 1/20 of a mile. Not only do kids learn valuable skills and sportsmanship but they also make new friends, a trend that extends beyond just the racers but amongst the families as well. Despite the normal apprehensions that might come with a pairing of kids and racecars, this sport boasts fewer injuries than littleleague football. Safety features include full roll cages, multi-point seat harnesses and full face helmets. Each year Quarter Midgets of America has three Grand National Events. This year the North Georgia Quarter Midget Association (NGQMA) has the privilege of hosting the Eastern Grand Nationals at the Cumming Fairgrounds’ track. Races will occur from July 23 to July 26, 2013. Approximately 300 drivers and their families will come from all over the nation for this event.

Spectating at the races is free and all of Forsyth County is invited to the Bill Thomas Raceway for the Quarter Midget Grands. For more information on this event or how to get involved in Quarter Midget Racing can be found at www.ngqma.com. Information provided by Sherry Taylor, Grands Committee Chair.

Manufacturing Society Regional Manufacturing Event Comes to Forsyth

O

n most afternoons Hansgrohe’s training and interactive product center is frequented by clients and technicians. However, on a recent rainy afternoon in June the German manufacturer’s state-of-the art facility in Forsyth County, Georgia was visited by representatives from more than forty of Metro Atlanta’s top manufacturing companies. The gathering was jointly hosted by the Manufacturing Society of Forsyth County and Next Generation Manufacturing. “We are happy to welcome you today,” stated Richard Kopelman, the Chairman of Next Generation Manufacturing and a Partner at Habif Arogeti & Wynne. “I encourage you to network and build relationships with one another, for events such as this help to create growth in our industry.” According to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the growth of Forsyth County’s manufacturing sector accounted for nearly 40 percent of all of the expansion projects that took place in the northeast region of Georgia during the year 2012. The recent growth in the community’s manufacturing sector prompted the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce to establish the Manufacturing Society of Forsyth County. “The Manufacturing Society provides our community’s manufacturers with a forum to learn from one another; and to communicate the value of our industry to our community’s youth,” stated Bruce Hagenau, Chairman of the Manufacturing Society of Forsyth County and a member of Next Generation Manufacturing’s Advisory Board. The event concluded with an exclusive tour of Hansgrohe’s manufacturing plant. The tour was provided by Russ Wheeler, the President of Hansgrohe USA and Stefan Hammann, Hansgrohe USA’s Vice President of Operations. For more information about Forsyth County’s manufacturing sector contact the CummingForsyth County Chamber of Commerce at (770) 887-6461, or visit www. cummingforsythchamber.org. Legislators Graded on Voting Records

T

he Georgia Chamber of Commerce has assigned grades to the state’s legislators through the 2013 Legislative Scorecard. The Chamber tracked ten legislative issues important to job creation and economic growth, basing each legislator’s grade on whether they voted for or against each issue. The addressed legislation aims to improve Georgia’s competitiveness in education, economic development, business and industry, and judiciary reform. The majority of the local delegation received excellent scores. The highest possible ranking (A+) was achieved by Senator Steve Gooch, Representative Mark Hamilton, Representative Calvin Hill, Senator Jack Murphy, and Representative Kevin Tanner. Representative Mike Dudgeon received an A ranking. He lost some points for voting against SB 24, a piece of legislation that allows the Georgia Department of Community Health to correct a shortfall in the state Medicaid program, preventing hospitals from having to cut important services and helping to keep several rural hospitals across the state running. Representative Geoff Duncan received a C+ for voting against two pieces of legislature that aim to improve the business community, one of which was the health care related, SB 24. The other was HB 318, which will extend state tax credits by two years on ‘angel investments’ for those who make qualified investments in Georgia’s high-tech companies. HB 318 also creates the Invest Georgia Fund, a public-private mechanism that would provide venture capital funding to companies in early and growth stages. The overall high scores bode well for our business community. “What is clear from this year’s scorecard is that lawmakers – both Democrat and Republican – are taking private-sector growth seriously. They realize how important these issues are to the state and to their constituents and that we must take action to encourage investment and job creation,” said Georgia Chamber President and CEO, Chris Clark.

SBSC Do the CyberCriminals Really Want Your Data? Jay Ryerse, President & CEO of JTECH Networks

JTECH Networks recently participated in a meeting where cyber-security was the primary topic of concern. The host was an insider that works with the FBI, NSA, and the military to diagnose what data cyber-criminals are looking for and why. His insights were quite surprising. Cyber thieves have determined it’s easier to catch you at home, or on your mobile devices at restaurants with free “Wi-Fi” connections, and at hotels than anywhere else. The average cybercriminal wants your usernames and passwords. Once they have that information, they use that to gain access to your work computer and your client base. The damage they can cause grows exponentially from there. There are reports they are using “social engineering” to gather data. One example he shared was a scenario where local thieves were putting keystroke logging software on a USB flash drive and dropping the drive in front of businesses. The social aspect is that employees are good-hearted and want to return the drive to the rightful owner. The problem is they plug that drive into their work computer and the bad code executes behind the scenes. You or your employee just unlocked the front door to your data.

How To Protect Your Computer: Lock the Door!

A quick review of www.fbi.gov provides an in-depth view of ways to protect your computer. Their advice relates to comments a parent might make to a young driver: “Don’t drive in bad neighborhoods” and “If you don’t lock your car, someone is going to steal your stuff.” The same holds true with your computer. Stay away from bad websites and lock your computer. Keep the firewall turned on, your anti-virus software up to date, and make sure you install the critical operating system updates. Lastly, the bad guys can’t break into a computer that isn’t turned on. When you aren’t home and using your computer, turn it off. It’s more secure and you might save a few dollars per year on your power bill. Learn more about this and other technical topics at the Chamber’s SBSC July Lunch & Learn on Wednesday, July 24 at 11:30 a.m. at the University of North Georgia- Cumming Campus. Register through the Chamber’s website www.cummingforsythchamber.org. JTECH Networks is a Cumming, GA based provider of proactive network support and computer services providing support for local businesses in the Forsyth County area. Students Work with Business to Create Winning Design hile most students were already W thinking of the beach or graduation parties, the graphic arts students at

the Smart Center Alpharetta. Smart Brand Manager, Krista Rolleri graciously volunteered her time to speak to each of the students and offer her expertise. “We were so honored to be a part of the Stick2It program. The enthusiastic engagement from the students and their level of talent absolutely blew us away and exceeded all expectations. We are hoping to participate again in an even bigger way next year,” commented Rolleri. In the end, it was the design talents of two students showcased on the car. Freshman Adam Skalleberg and junior Sierra Romeo were this year’s winners. Adam’s art choices and Sierra’s text treatments and messaging made the perfect pair. In addition to the invaluable experience gained through the design competition, three designers took Stick2It to the next level, and pursued internships with Smart Alpharetta. For a chance to see the winning car design in person, visit the RBM- North Atlanta booth at the 2013 Business Expo, August 8, 2013 at the Forsyth Conference Center.

Forsyth Central High School were hard at work the last few weeks of school thanks to a partnership between In-Depth Wraps and the Smart Center Alpharetta at RBM-North Atlanta. In-Depth has partnered with FCHS’s graphic arts program, led by instructor Heather Hanline, to offer students a new art medium: vehicles. The Stick2It program teaches students about vehicle wraps and how they can fit into a client’s marketing plans, while simultaneously showcasing career opportunities for the students in the graphic arts industry. “We want these students to recognize their talent and what they have to offer the business community,” remarked Torri Westmoreland, owner of In-Depth Wraps. Now on their ninth project car, the students have designed In-Depth Wrap’s shop cars, vehicles for a national brand displayed in a trade show, and vehicles for local businesses like Brandywine Printing. This year, students were tasked with designing an eye-catching vehicle wrap for Smart Alpharetta that would open commuters’ eyes to the car’s fuelefficiency and safety. The winners earned iPad minis and the opportunity for their design and names to be displayed on the car. The car will be displayed on the Winners Sierra Romeo and Adam Skalleberg showcase floor at
