Expansion project Boulder Dash nears sets tone for 2012 P
A
lthough our community experienced a tremendous amount of economic development activity during 2011, 2012 is already shaping up to exceed last year’s totals. One of the most prominent projects of the year will undoubtedly be the expansion of Metcam — a Forsyth County-based metal fabricating company. Metcam is a recipient of t h e Ty c o S u p p l i e r Excellence Award and a Gold Level environmental partner with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia. In the coming months, Metcam plans to move forward with the first phase of a 61,000-square-foot expansion that is projected
to generate a minimum of 30 new jobs and approximately $2 million in new capital investment. This expansion serves as the first project in quite some time to utilize resources from such economic development partners as Lanier Technical College and the Georgia Department of Economic Development. The next phase of Metcam’s expansion will require that their property be rezoned. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners will review the rezoning component of Metcam’s expansion project in the coming weeks.
lans are already in place for the Third Annual Boulder Dash 5K for April 28, 2012. The Healthcare Association of Forsyth County established this annual event as an opportunity for business and community organizations to challenge one another to shed a few pounds and get active. The course will start at Northside Hospital-Forsyth, travel up Ronald Reagan Boulevard and into the Lafarge Quarry. Those planning the event have some great plans for the party at the finish line. The Boulder Dash is one of only two races run in a working hard-rock quarry in the nation and is one of the most unique courses anywhere in the region. Last year, there were more than 1,500 participants that showed up to this event. We are expecting to exceed well over 1,500 participants this year and hope that you’ll join us for this fun community event. Not a runner? That’s okay! Many participants walk the
course and have a great time. If you’d rather just come enjoy the festivities, the Spring Fling, held at the finish line, will offer up a fun morning. The Spring Fling in 2011 hosted over 25 business and community vendors from Forsyth County. We also enjoyed music, food, prizes and an awards ceremony. A big thanks to our primary sponsors Lafarge Aggregates and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. Other sponsors include Northeast Georgia Heart Center, Hansgrohe, JTECH Networks, Swim Kids of Atlanta, and Derucki Construction, with many sponsorship opportunities still available. Actorboy Video Production brings distinctive, affordable film to all I
f a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video could be priceless! And right now Actorboy Video Production owner Tom Clark is helping every size business by writing and producing creative, affordable and professionally shot videos for their companies. So, who’s Actorboy? Actorboy Video Production began in 2000 after owner Tom Clark saw a need for affordable, professional and creative video production that included the look and feel of the big agencies that not everyone can afford. Tom got his start in radio as a traffic reporter, then moved on to sports director while writing, producing and co-hosting for the No. 1 morning radio show in the country, Power 99FM back in 1987. He added acting to his resume when a talent agent wanted Tom to get him a headshot, and afterward he did some voiceover work through Power 99 for a client. Tom took to it like a fish to water and has been an actor for more than 20 years. Along the way he developed the “Ron Howard” bug of wanting to get behind the camera as well as in front of it. After learning on the job from hundreds of directors, producers, lighting and audio professionals, it was as if Tom went to film school with the industry pros and graduated with honors. Bringing that experience plus the creative edge from his writing and radio days, Actorboy Video Production has been turning heads with new and fresh ideas for all businesses. “Perhaps the most surprising thing you’ll learn in the midst of all of the technological-speak that marketers toss around is that one of the simplest
2
HORIZONS March 2012
yet most powerful methods of capturing and retaining an audience today is video,” says Tom. “Having a broad view of the industry as an award-winning writer, producer, director and actor for these past 20 years has put me in a unique position to develop and manage Actorboy Video Production right here in Georgia. “Actorboy is dedicated to bringing distinctive and affordable productions to businesses at any level. Capturing the vision and the message and then telling the story with video by making it engaging and effective is what it’s all about,” Tom said. “ It’s my insistence on quality and our strong niche in both creativity and execution of design that sets us apart from other video production companies. My creative team knows no limits and thrives on producing material that is both captivating and actionable. You’ll get results as unique as you are, I guarantee it; and I oversee everything Actorboy produces.”
Some of the ways a small business can benefit from online video is something as straightforward as introducing a new product or service, to increase traffic to your Web site, to provide a product demonstration or tutorial to your customers, deliver commentary from your CEO to investors or to convey a message to employees. There’s customer testimonials, corporate training, and it will definitely help improve your search engine rankings. The list is endless. Actorboy Video Production prides itself on creativity, professionalism and understanding of the small business owner. It does every project as if the business depended on it. “And if you think about it, isn’t that the attitude you’d want from us? If you just want to talk about Video, call me, I’ll buy the joe,” says Tom. As for Tom the actor, you can see him in Disney’s “Secretariat,” and also look for Tom this year on the big screen with Cameron Diaz and Billy Crystal. Actorboy also just produced the video shown at the 2012 Celebration of Excellence. Thank you Actorboy for all your support of the chamber. Please visit www.actorboy.biz and check out its portfolio.

Northside Hospital continues to deliver
T
he Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce and Forsyth County Schools applaud Northside Hospital-Forsyth for its continued support of the community. The hospital has been a “gold level” supporter of Forsyth County Schools for many years. The hospital has contributed to the local community in numerous ways including providing financial support for school clinics serving children enrolled in Forsyth County Schools. Additionally, the hospital has demonstrated its commitment to our community and the safety of our students by donating defibrillators to ensure potentially life-saving access in the event of a cardiac emergency. The hospital’s ongoing and continued support is evident in the annual battery maintenance of these
valuable pieces of medical equipment. Additionally, the hospital is primarily responsible for equipping Lambert High School’s wellness and fitness room benefiting all enrolled students. In addition to health and safety equipment, the hospital also supports the academic and career development of our students. For the past two years Northside Forsyth has promoted “The Healthcare Exploring Program” attended by 24 Forsyth County high school students. The students rotate to various Northside facilities to learn about various medical careers

that they may not previously have considered. The students unanimously agree that it gives them a “jump start” on learning about medical career options that could be afforded to them.
Furthermore, the hospital demonstrates its commitment to exceptionally trained and highly qualified educators as well as other individuals and entities that support our students by being the title sponsor for the “Celebration of Excellence.” The Celebration of Excellence is an annual awards banquet recognizing area businesses that participate in the Partners in Education program, Forsyth County Teachers of the Year, individual volunteers (community member mentors) and parent leaders whom are committed to our students’ personal, social, career and academic development. Northside Hospital-Forsyth is truly helping to shape the future by supporting our youth, and the chamber and schools salute you with many thanks!

Lights, camera, action in Forsyth!
T
he Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office, or FMDE, is in charge of the Camera Ready program, a special designation given to participating Georgia communities interested in attracting film and television production. What does a Camera Ready designation mean? If you represent a production company, you have a helpful liaison in each Camera Ready community ready to assist you with your upcoming shoot. If you’re a county representative, you can promote your c o m m u n i t y ’s assets directly to production companies interested in shooting in Georgia. We are excited to announce that on Feb. 29 at the state Capitol, Forsyth County will be one of 25 new counties inducted into the Camera Ready community program at a special ceremony as a part of Film Day at the Capitol, celebrating the success the filming industry has already had in the state. Why be a part of the Camera Ready community? To provide easier, faster and better access to county production resources and location information through state resources and partnership. A variety of shooting locations are needed due to a dramatic increase in film and television production across the state,
with Georgia offering tax incentives to production and filming companies. Local economic impact from productions can be significant, including hiring of local residents, hotel stays and purchases of goods and services in the communities. Some examples are buying construction materials for sets, dining in our restaurants or if the crew wants, to just see a movie while in town for the duration of filming. We are Camera Ready! We have designated Anna Taylor Barlow, the chamber’s director of tourism, as our county representative, and she will handle all incoming requests from production companies (as well as inquiries from the state) that are interested in our community. We have answered all the required questions, loaded photos from the county and city into the library. We have already received several requests for production locations for possible filming in our area, but will be “official” at the end of February and go live on the state Web site. If you have more interesting photos of the community or questions, please contact the chamber. This is an exciting program that the state is offering and we are excited to be a partner with the Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office.
