Electric cooperatives are unique because they are owned by the “members” to whom they provide e l e c t r i c i t y.

The Rural Electrification Administration (REA), which was established as part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “New Deal” Program, provided loans to groups of rural Americans to form electric “cooperatives”. These cooperatives had only one purpose — to get much-needed electricity to rural farming areas where existing “for

profit” utilities had refused to extend service at that time. Your local electric cooperative, Sawnee EMC, was founded in 1938.

Partners in Education FCS Salutes Georgia Dermatology Center for Years of Dedication

M

ay is Skin Cancer Awareness month.

Forsyth County Schools have partnered every year for the last seventeen years with Dr. Alex Gross of Georgia Dermatology Center to educate children on the dangers of sun exposure.

Dr. Gross sponsors a skin cancer awareness poster contest annually. The goal of the contest is to increase elementary school students’ awareness of the risks of sun and tanning bed exposure and encourage sunscreen use. The contest is open to any Forsyth County elementary school student in the fourth or fifth grade.

First prize is a check for $250 dollars and the two runners up will each receive a check for $50 dollars. The school nurse of the winning student will receive a Clarisonic, the sonic skin cleaning system, as well as a gift card to Georgia Dermatology Center for services in the Medical Spa. The winning poster will be displayed in an ad in the Forsyth County News, courtesy of Dr. Gross.

The Chamber helped Hansgrohe obtain country-oforigin certificates, allowing them to more easily export. The Chamber also connected Hansgrohe with the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, which eventually led them to the Department of Global Commerce Council.

Just recently, the Governor of Georgia formally bestowed the organization’s G.L.O.B.E award upon Hansgrohe, commending the company for its excellence in international trade in 2013. The company was also recognized for supporting the U.S. workforce, while strengthening Georgia’s position in global commerce. Through its export business, Hansgrohe is especially pleased that it has been able to help to preserve water by offering its flow-optimized products to those regions that lack a mature water-usage framework and have been facing water shortages for years.

Chamber Attracts International Business I

n January of 2014 the Chamber of Commerce launched an aggressive plan to grow the commercial segment of Forsyth County’s tax digest from its current level of 20 percent to 25 percent over the next five years. By doing so, the community will gain approximately $870 million in new capital investment. The plan, which is entitled “Business First”, focuses on several major target markets – including one of the fastest growing markets in the nation: international companies.

Marilyn Geewax stated in her 2013 article entitled More Foreign Firms Look to make it in the USA, “despite the Great Recession, slow recovery and political dysfunction in Washington, the United States remains a top destination for the world’s wealth.” According to Select USA, the economic development arm of the United States of America, the USA “attracted about $225 billion in inbound investment in 2011 from global companies headquartered abroad—but seeks to do even better.”

Locally, Forsyth County is home to more than 60 international firms.

The majority of the community’s international firms are from regions in Europe that feature high access to capital and a strong capability of penetrating the US market.

“Forsyth County offers everything we need,” stated James Suh, President of the Italian gear manufacturing company Motovario Group USA. “The community supports business and industry in all aspects of growth from helping us obtain tax incentives to securing a perfect site for us as we conduct global commerce.”

Forsyth County is home to more than 60 international firms.

In 2014, The Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce will partner with such organizations as the German

American Chamber of Commerce and the French Trade Ministry to attract new jobs and capital investment from international companies. On May 2, 2014 the organization will join forces with Rushton & Company to host an International Business Roundtable Meeting at the University of North Georgia. The event will be attended by the leaders of Forsyth County’s international business enterprises.

acation is meant to be a time when you can rest and recharge but for some, taking a break from work is not all it’s cracked up to be! In fact, it can sometimes be more stressful and arduous than going in to the office.

The Small Business Services Center and Women Who Mean Business will host a May Lunch & Learn event to help overcome that feeling of post-vacation dread. This event will take place right as summer begins on Thursday, May 22nd from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at the University of North Georgia – Cumming Campus.

You will hear from three business leaders on how they prepare their office and their staff to go on vacation. Additionally, the floor will be open to discussion so that attendees can share tips and ideas with one another. With sufficient preparation, a clear plan and collaboration with fellow Chamber members it is possible to take a stress-free vacation from your stressful job.

Forsyth County Named P Healthiest County in Georgia Once Again The 2014 County Health Rankings were released in March and Forsyth County has been named the healthiest county in Georgia. This is the second year in a row that Forsyth County was awarded the number one spot.

The rankings are based on a model of population health that emphasizes the many factors that can help make communities healthier places. Building on the work of America’s Health Rankings, the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute has used this model to rank the health of Wisconsin’s counties every year since 2003.

Forsyth County’s ranking can be attributed to many factors including high percentage of adults with some college education and a high percent of adults with an income twice the federal poverty level. The County Health C a l c u l a t o r ( w w w . countyhealthcalculator.org) stated if five percent more people attended some college and two percent more had an income higher than twice the federal poverty level we could expect to save 44 lives, prevent 715 cases of diabetes, and eliminate $5.2 million in diabetes costs every year in Forsyth County.

Another factor that has helped Forsyth County achieve such a high ranking is the area’s low child poverty rate of eight percent. This figure is significantly lower than the state’s average of 27 percent. Also, single-parent homes in the county total 13 percent, compared to Georgia’s 36 percent total.

Forsyth County Resident Wins Second Place in Congressional Art Competition

ongressman Rob Woodall hosted a reception to honor the student winners of this year’s Seventh District Congressional Art Competition. Among those winners was Stephanie Tian, a Lambert High School student, who took home the second place award for her work entitled Safari Symphony. orthside Hospital-Atlanta and Northside Hospital-Forsyth have received the Get With The Guidelines® – Heart Failure Silver-Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association (AHA)/American College of Cardiology Foundation secondary prevention guidelines for heart failure patients. Additionally, the two hospitals received the Bronze Quality Achievement Award for implementing quality improvement measures outlined by AHA and the American Stroke Association (ASA) for the treatment of stroke patients.

Get With The Guidelines is the AHA/ASA hospitalbased quality improvement program that helps hospital’s provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing hospital readmissions for heart failure and stroke patients.

Northside Hospital-Atlanta and Northside HospitalForsyth earned their awards by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and

treatment of heart failure and stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include proper use of medications and aggressive riskreduction therapies aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of patients. Before patients are discharged, they also receive education on managing their condition and overall health, as well as referrals for cardiac rehabilitation.

A team of board-certified physicians, specialtytrained nurses and technologists at Northside has the highest level of expertise in diagnosing and treating disorders like coronary artery blockages, congenital heart defects, heart failure and stroke.
