Hometown CPAs Emerging as a National Firm

ore than 30 years ago, Jim M Frazier and David Deeter decided to launch a CPA firm together

in downtown Atlanta. They wanted to build a firm that offers exceptional service in conjunction with top-flight expertise. The firm grew steadily, recruiting partners from larger “Big 4” accounting firms who valued a culture that is both entrepreneurial and focused on furthering the success of each client. At a time when the economy has made growth challenging for many companies in the Atlanta area, Frazier & Deeter has emerged as an exciting growth story. In 2008, the firm made its debut in the rankings of top 100 CPA firms, a significant achievement in an industry with more than 40,000 providers. In 2013, Frazier & Deeter leapfrogged up the CPA rankings published by Accounting Today, moving from the 77 th to the 69 th largest firm in the nation. Based on this exceptional g r ow t h , t h e fi r m wa s n a m e d a “Pacesetter” Firm - the 10 th fastest growing firm amongst the top 100. Frazier & Deeter offers a full selection of services for both individuals and businesses. Services for individuals include tax planning and preparation,

tax credits, divorce litigation support, estate planning, and wealth management. For businesses, the firm provides tax planning, tax preparation, international tax and audits of financial statements and employee benefit plans. The firm also provides advisory support for critical business areas such as process improvement, fraud prevention, business valuations and mergers and acquisitions. “Frazier & Deeter offers all the services you expect from a large accounting firm with the responsiveness of a smaller firm,” said Managing Partner Seth McDaniel. “Our core values mean we take the time to really understand the client’s long term objectives so we can help them achieve their goals.” Over the past two years the firm has begun merging with other firms, adding deep real estate and forensic accounting expertise to its offices in Atlanta and Alpharetta. Frazier & Deeter also acquired a firm in Nashville, which represented the first expansion outside of Georgia. “We pride ourselves on both our technical knowledge and our dedication to our clients,” said Alpharetta Office Managing Partner Roger Lusby. “We

Seth McDaniel, Managing Partner, Frazier & Deeter

support clients ranging from individuals with complex financial needs to some of the nation’s largest companies.” This year Frazier & Deeter launched two new subsidiaries. In March, the firm launched FD Venture Farm, a service that provides a platform for tracking d eve l o p m e n t s o f p r iva t e l y h e l d companies. The service was quickly embraced by the investor and analyst community, with organizations such as the Atlanta Technology Angels and Alabama’s Angel Investor Management Group becoming strategic partners. In June, Frazier & Deeter announced FD Fund Administration, a subsidiary that provides outsourced administration services for large investment funds, such

as private equity and real estate funds. These service expansions are not the first for the firm. Frazier & Deeter branched out beyond the CPA business back in 1997 with the launch of a wealth management firm called SignatureFD. SignatureFD has flourished and now manages nearly $1.7 billion in assets. “As one of the earliest partners of the firm, it has been exciting to see Frazier & Deeter’s growth,” noted Lusby. “But I’m even more excited as we look to the future and the many ways we can help our clients be successful.” For more information about Frazier & Deeter, call the Alpharetta office at 404.573.4200 or visit our website at www.frazierdeeter.com.

In-Depth

Small Business Finance Has Changed

Steve Bloom

Entrepreneur Expert

uring our “Great Recession” the availability D of capital to business and consumer was nonexistent. For the fortunate few who could qualify for a loan, the processing, underwriting and closing time and requirements were lengthy and cumbersome. Fast forward to 2013, however, and the market has changed for the better and continues to improve. Traditional lending organizations are now actively seeking borrowers and have funds to lend. Their underwriting today has not changed in the last 3 decades, and they continue to require collateral to support repayment of the debt. The economic debacle in 2007—2008 suggests underwriting was

4

HORIZONS October 2013

not restrictive and the results have been well documented and publicized for all to see. This means that the requirements for loan approval never changed, but some in senior management in the financial industry elected not to follow the guidelines and we all were affected by the consequences. What’s important to all of us is that business growth needs capital and we now have the opportunity to access funding at attractive rates, reasonable underwriting standards and timely closings. There are now alternate sources of financing that have developed as a result of our past recession and for those who seek funding from $10,000— $100,000+, opportunities are numerous. At a recent event, “Access to Capital - MONEY TO M A I N S T R E E T,” s p o n s o r e d b y D & B Credibility, Bank of America and Microsoft, attendees had the opportunity to meet with lenders one on one to discuss their financing requirements and learn about the numerous financing options available to small business owners. One of the most important takeaways from this event for our small business community is the availability of Peer to Peer lenders and the development of Crowdfunding platforms like Access to Capital for Entrepreneurs (ACE). All of the non-traditional lenders shared examples of the types of loans that they have closed. Their approved applicants all had good credit scores, but loan to income valuations were not considered; credit history, ability to repay, quality of the presentation, and experience were most important. From origination to closing, the norm was a mere two weeks. The average loans were in the $20,000$40,000 range. Peer to Peer, also known as Person to Person, is a relatively new financing vehicle that matches

private investors with qualified small businesses. www.Prosper.com and www.LendingClub.com are two of the largest. They originated and closed over $871 million last year. Crowdfunding involves individuals pooling their money in support of the efforts of other organizations. This network is similar to Peer to Peer and several of the presenters were newly

formed Crowdfunding lenders. Lendio is another useful tool for small businesses. It is a loan matching source that assists small business in finding the right loan online with banks, credit unions and alternate lenders. They can be found at www.Lendio.com. Now is the time for businesses to personally get to know their lenders. They should strive to understand what types of businesses, the underwriting requirements, loan types and preferred loan amounts that the lender requires before making an inquiry or application. Our banking community and various alternate lenders are actively seeking new borrowers, the economy is improving, interest rates are low and opportunities exist. Good luck!

ongestion on GA-400 has become C a major issue for residents, businesses and economic development

prospects in the community. In a recent business climate survey 31 percent of existing businesses said that congestion had a negative impact on their ability to do business. Approximately 22 percent noted that congestion had a negative impact on their ability to retain high quality employees. The population of Forsyth County is expected to exceed 200,000 by 2017. As the community continues to grow and enjoy economic prosperity, infrastructure must be in place to ensure a sustainable economic future. Other needs in the community include Hwy. 9, repaving and widening of Hwy. 369, McGinnis Ferry Road and Hwy. 20 (from 575 to Sugar Hill). “Forsyth County continues to be one of the fastest growing counties in the state, so transportation is a key topic for our community to address,” District 4 Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills said. “Transportation impacts all facets of our community, not the least of which is economic development. From the McGinnis Ferry Road interchange to the widening of Highway 20, transportation projects impact not only existing businesses and but also businesses that are considering locating or expanding in Forsyth County.” To have your voice heard and your questions answered mark your calendar for the 2013 Transportation Summit.
