Fan’s guide top 5 storylines Can West Forsyth replace talent?
Replacing four players who combined for 6,741 yards and 65 touchdowns won’t be easy. The Wolverines must replace AllCounty offensive player of the year A.J. Erdely and All-County defensive player of the year, Mohamed Camara. It’ll be tough, but Hepler knows how to get a team prepared.
Can Forsyth get more than one team in the playoffs?
West should make the playoffs, but it’ll be difficult for another team to make it in. Central, Lambert, North and South combined for five region wins last season, while Pinecrest’s region has the Nos. 2- and 4-ranked teams in Class 1A.
Which new head coach will have the biggest impact?
North’s Jason Galt has the team headed in the right direction. Despite falling 21-15 to Riverwood in the scrimmage, North held the ball for over 20 minutes and led 9-7 at halftime. If the Raiders learn Galt’s Double Wing, good things should follow.
Will non-region success translate?
Last year Lambert, North, South and West were undefeated in non-region play. North and South then each lost six straight games before they played one another to end the season. The Longhorns knocked off North and South, but that was it. West’s combined nonregion teams last year went 23-13, while the rest of the county played teams that finished a combined 45-106.
How will new quarterbacks fare?
Four of the county’s teams are making transitions at arguably the most important position on the field. Pinecrest, South and West are breaking in brand new starting quarterbacks, while Lambert hands over the reins to Hayden McLeod, who got playing time last season when Brock Maxwell was injured. They have three weeks of non-region games to get ready for region play.

Gainesville at West Forsyth, Aug. 30
West edged Gainesville 32-30 to open the season last year, forcing quarterback Deshaun Watson into four interceptions. The Wolverines will look to fluster Watson again this season at The Den. Gainesville rebounded after the loss and finished the season with 12 wins, including a 49-13 victory over Ware County for the Class 5A state title. The Red Elephants want revenge, while West will look to prove last year’s win wasn’t a fluke.
Alpharetta at West, Sept. 20
Neither defense showed up when these two teams met last season. West outscored Alpharetta 63-42, but the game was backand-forth for the first three quarters. The Wolverines finished the game with a gaudy 597 offensive yards. Alpharetta will be led by junior Austin King, who has already received collegiate attention and will test the West defense.
Lambert at South Forsyth, Sept. 20
These two teams hate one another, and the 4.8 mile distance between the schools doesn’t help. South has never beaten Lambert and the Longhorn players are quick to remind them. Lambert topped the War Eagles 32-19 last year, but South returns senior running back Isaiah Williams and athlete Sam Walker who are ready to put a stop to the three-game losing streak.
West at South, Nov. 1
The Wolverines pounded South 56-14 last year, so you can expect the War Eagles to remember such a lopsided affair, especially on senior night. West will look to make it 2-0 over South with a similar outcome.
Forsyth Central at North Forsyth, Aug. 30
Two new coaches with two new offenses will open the season against one another. Central’s quick spread option attack vs. North’s slow ground-and-pound game. The game will serve as a litmus test to see how far these two teams have come since the spring.

Forsyth Central’s offensive line had grown accustomed to the traditional protocol of football the past several seasons. To be honest, they had come to savor every step, going from the huddle to the line of scrimmage to the play and back again and again. Especially the
huddle and the few seconds to catch their breath before the next play. T h e n fi r s t - y e a r c o a c h S h a n e Williamson arrived and updated the protocol – the spread offense. “It’s a much faster pace,” Central senior guard Kyle Gamble said. “Things got a lot harder at practice.” “It’s boom, boom, boom, boom,” Central senior tackle Hunter Lamm said. “[The plays] never stop.” The Bulldogs embark this fall on their 12th attempt for a winning season since the last one in 2001. Whale Squad could be key to playoff run Wolverines’ unit has unique chemistry By Brian Paglia

When the Wolverines break into position groups during warm-ups on the field, John Delf, Andrew Marshall, John Salo and others surrounded Jayce Ratliff. The 6-foot-2, 310-pound senior tackle begins the type of hype session that is seemingly mandatory now: he hunches over, looks from teammate to teammate as he circles, and shouts, “Who are we?”
“Whale squad!” the linemen respond. Ratliff gets louder each time. “WHO ARE WE?” he says. “WHALE SQUAD!” they respond. Wait. The what? “We’re the Whale Squad,” Marshall said. The Whale Squad. They have their own Twitter account: @whale_squad. It has a modest 28 followers, but that’s by design. Only past and present West offensive linemen get a follow from the Whale Squad. “There’s a select few followers,” junior guard Mitch Toure said. “We don’t follow just anybody.” See WEST | 20

Few things excite Jeff Arnette more about the upcoming season than his offensive line. The fourth-year head coach has seen the linemen develop and grow throughout high school, and likes what he sees. “I really believe that one of our main strengths is our offensive line,” Arnette said. “It’s the biggest it’s been since I’ve
been here. Strongest we’ve been since I’ve been here and overall, probably as physical as it’s been since I’ve been here.” The War Eagles boast all upperclassmen, as seniors Kyle Watford, Joseph Henggeler, Davis Winkie and Ross Schaber, while juniors Caleb Lummus and Griffin Landrum round out the group. “Kyle Watford and Griffin Landrum anchor that line,” Arnette said. “They’re big boys. …Landrum probably benches 360 pounds. Central calls along the way, most notably a 5-5 campaign in 2008 when a winning season was resoundingly crushed on the season’s final week with a 49-0 loss to eventual state champion Tucker. More typically, the past 11 seasons – whether it was with Matt Hollis or Charles Kicker or Chris Bennett at the helm – have been the experience of this year’s offensive line: an anonymous 2-8 or 3-7 disappointment with little hope in sight. Williamson says the minute he discovered he had four returning starters on the offensive line and one experienced newcomer, he saw some hope for this season. “We felt like coming in that [the offensive line] is our strength right now,” Williamson said. “We’re blessed to have some offensive linemen. That is a blessing.” And then, upon his arrival to Central, Williamson took his blessing and ran them. “At the beginning of the year, even

Central plenty of experience himself. They worked all offseason to grasp Williamson’s schemes that will be directed by senior Michael Branigan at quarterback and certainly feature returning all-county senior wide receiver Jeremiah Jones more frequently. They performed drill after drill and ran play after play at a pace that was inconceivable last season when the Bulldogs ran the Wing-T. “You definitely had to get used to it,” Kelly said. “It was a lot different just going back to back to back instead of having time in the huddle.” Thing is, Central’s offense might not have been the problem last year. Sure, the Bulldogs went 2-8 for the second straight season, but they averaged 313.3 yards and 24.1 points per game, the fifth-best total in school history. The defense, however, allowed 32.7 points per game, including five games of at least 40 points. No matter; Williamson’s overhauling that side too. Back to the offense, and in the trenches particularly, where Gamble, Lamm and Co. believe they have the biggest impact on whether Central’s hiatus of success ends. “Michael needs to do a lot of reading,” Gamble said, “so if we’re not blocking the right guys he can’t make the right read and every play’s messed up.” “It’s our responsibility to open that hole for the running back so they can go celebrate,” Lamm said. “In the past, it wasn’t like that. It was all running
backs. Now, the recognition is starting to come on the line.” Indeed, Williamson has increased the emphasis on the offensive line. He can’t help it, really. He began his high school career as an offensive line coach. Everywhere he’s gone – including head coaching stints at Toombs County (2008-12) and Swainsboro (2002-07) – Williamson has had two offensive line coaches on staff. This year, it’s Greg Busby and Greg Dirst. “I feel that’s the most important position,” Williamson said. “They’re able to work with them constantly. … It’s hard for one guy to sit there and look at seven guys. That’s going to pay dividends, because we’re able to have two quality coaches who’ve coached offensive line a long time.” But, inevitably, part of the growing process for this group came off the field, at Rooster’s Café. The restaurant is a popular site for offensive linemen in the county. They go on Wednesdays when it’s $12.99 for all-you-can-eat wings and eat and joke and eat some more. Gamble found his limit was 55 wings in one sitting, Kelly 70 and Lamm 109. “The most I’ve seen is 115,” Allen said. This group has needed those “wing nights.” Playing football for Central hasn’t been good for team morale going on 11 seasons now. “Even our own school hates our team,” Gamble said. Which gives this veteran group a clear mission going into the 2013 season. “Shock the county is what we need to do,” Kelly said. “We want to make a change. South [are] too.” “…We’ve got several kids coming back last year with experience. Coach [Jake] Martin is our offensive line coach and he does an unbelievable job. He gets every ounce out of those guys. Those guys really respond to him and they work well together and he’s got a way of jelling those kids. And, they’re great kids and they’re a great unit already, and we haven’t even gotten into the season.” Landrum understands that if the War Eagles are to thrive this season, it will be because of performance of the line. South senior running back Isaiah Williams gained 809 yards and scored nine touchdowns last year, but did so running behind a gritty bunch. With the amount of veteran presence on the line, Landrum is confident Williams, along with other backs, will have bigger holes to run through. “We love him and not just Isaiah, just all our running backs,” Landrum said. “We love blocking for them. We know if we make a hole, they can make a big thing happen. “I’ve been working really hard to get better; we expect big things. We’re ready. …We love run blocking and just mashing people in. It’s a lot of fun just going downhill and playing.”

The entire offensive line had one of those games against North Forsyth last season in a 35-14 win to finish the year. Landrum said he could tell the defensive linemen didn’t want to take anymore punishment. “I know we ran the same play [against North] about 13 times in a row,” he said. “It’s not really their eyes, but it’s their body language. You can tell they don’t want anymore, they’re backing down. They’re not coming off the ball as hard; they’re absorbing the head shot.” Another leader on the line will be Davis Winkie, who will likely get the starting nod at center, a position he’s grown more comfortable with along with long-snapping. Winkie’s 6-foot-6, 260pound frame should clear the way for plenty of running room. “It’s not entirely new to me,” he said. “I had to perform the same duties in a

That philosophy is the core mentality head coach Todd Winter has instilled in the Class 1A Paladins, who don’t need big linemen as much as they need linemen who can jump off the ball and block into the linebacker level. “What I expect from them is to get off the football low,” Winter said. “I expect them to get us in position to run our offense. Pinecrest ting into that second level. “The only time we need to have any power at all is with our guards and our center. We do a lot of double-teaming, but other than that, I expect those guys to get off the ball quickly to give our quarterback some clean reads on the dive read and be athletic enough to redirect linebackers who are scraping and get a hat on them.” Although Pinecrest lost three starters on the line from last year’s team, it will return junior left guard Gatlin Winter and senior right guard Nick Grimaldi. The Paladins’ strong running game helped rack up 27 points per game last season, and in large part, was due to the strength of the offensive line. “I feel right at home on the line,” Grimaldi said. “The line may not be the glamor position, but it’s definitely the most needed one and we do the dirty work for the team so that we can win. “When we layout one of the guys in the back end of the field and just destroy them and the player runs behind us and we get a touchdown, that’s probably the best moment.” Winter and Grimaldi have impressed the coaches with their desire to get s t r o n g e r, w h i l e t h e 6 - f o o t - 2 , 240-pounder Matt Walters commands a presence at the center position. “Both [Gatlin Winter and Grimaldi]

had great years in the weight room,” Todd Winter said, “so I expect both of those guys to lead a little bit more up front. Then there’s Matt Walters at center, [who is a] big, strong kid and very athletic.” Both tackles are new to the starting job this season, as Luke del Balzo will command the right tackle position, while Logan Stafford will hold anchor at left tackle. “Luke [is] a very athletic kid,” Winter said. “He has to play in space a lot, and what I mean by that is with the triple option, he has to block linebackers and sometimes even safeties, so we need some athleticism there. Logan at left tackle isn’t quite as athletic as Luke but is really going to be able to hammer down the edge…and allow us to run off tackle a little bit. And, there’s some different formations we get in that allows us to take advantage of Logan’s size and strength.”

Raiders learn some new tricks Senior-laden group takes to power attack By Brian Paglia

Among the several unconventional things first-year coach Jason Galt has brought to North Forsyth, none has been as uplifting – and yet challenging – to the Raiders’ offensive line as Power Hour. The exercise is not really an hour, but it’s demanding nonetheless: 11 players on offense lined up against 16 on defense. It has become a showcase for North’s new offense, the Double Wing, one on that on the surface appears to be a nostalgic scheme. Regardless, Galt used it with much success at Dutchtown from 2007 until last season. Spotting the defense five extra players, the offense doesn’t buckle. “We still get positive yardage,” guard Michael Carter said. “If we do our jobs and stay on our tracks, we can block just about anything.” That would be good news for North quarterback Harris Roberts, a senior with prototypical size and arm strength who has been battered the past two seasons. It’d also be good news for Raiders running back Jamal Davenport, a junior with prototypical linebacker size and strength who should get the bulk of North’s carries. And it could be good news for a North program trying to make the slow climb back to relevance since its last winning season in 2009. Indeed, the Raiders are hoping that this Double Wing offense is good news all around. Perhaps its methodical rushing attack to can consume more time and give a defense that allowed 30.4 points per game last season more rest. Maybe its schematic advantages can

help North become competitive again after going 1-12 in region play the past two seasons. If it does, if the Double Wing is all North players believe it can be, it will be in great part because of one of the more experienced offensive lines in the county. The unit consists of five seniors – Carter (6-1, 220), center Clay Barton (5-11, 210), right tackle Blake Hodges (6-1, 195), left guard Derrick Roughton (5-11, 220) and left tackle Elijah Francis (5-11, 205). Barton, Carter and Hodges
started last season. Hodges will be a third-year starter. There is also junior Andrew Johnson (6-1, 250), a versatile player able to contribute at several spots on the line, and sophomore tackle Jackson Bardall, a behemoth at 6-3, 300 pounds who figures to see significant playing time this season. North involved almost exclusively as blockers, helping on double teams with a tackle or sealing the outside against defensive backs. “I’m extremely excited about this group,” Galt said. “I’ve got a group that’s strong, that’s physical and they’ve got some meanness about them. They actually want to put guys on the turf. … They have a defensive mentality playing offensive line.” And yet, when Galt first introduced this group to their new offense, they were a clumsy group. Offensive linemen lined up in 2-foot splits in the Wing-T under previous coach Blair Armstrong. They were used to having some personal space on the field. In the Double Wing, linemen are packed in at the line of scrimmage with their feet touching. The first the group ran a play during spring practice they were falling all over each other. “That’s why we all got ankle braces this year,” Barton said. “I actually turned my ankle a couple of times in the spring. It’s a lot more people falling on each

other.” Gradually, they improved and began to see that the offense was more than just a mass of bodies falling on the ground. “People think it’s just a scrum, but it’s not,” Galt said. “There’s a lot of coaching that goes into it.” Soon the advantages became clear. Galt and offensive line coach Scott Williams taught the linemen how to block primarily with the largest surface area of their body (shoulders) instead of the smallest (hands) like many linemen do in contemporary offenses. With the line packed in, guards don’t have as far to pull. Barton’s only responsibilities at center became snapping the ball and then stepping left or right to block his man instead of pulling like in other offenses. Trepidation eventually gave way to full-scale optimism. “I thought we were just going to run the ball over and over again,” Hodges said, “and we’re going to get so predictable. But after seeing what it can do …” Hodge trailed off, but each player knew where he was going. They hope their new enigmatic offense gives North the element of surprise this season. “No one runs this offense,” Hodges said. “They’ve never seen this before.”

On it are written the initials and graduation year of every offensive lineman to come through the program. They hold it in that pre-game huddle on the field. It stays with West coaches in the press box during the game. And there are the schematic changes West has implemented on offense this offseason. Can they be effective? Many of those answers lie in how well this Whale Squad in 2013 can perform. “It all starts up front,” West coach Frank Hepler said. “If you look at our program, if we’ve done well it’s because of the lines. We’ve gone far because of both sides of the line.” The Wolverines have a solid core of returning starters in Marshall, Ratliff and Salo. Marshall (6-5, 270) is one of the top centers in the country, a threestar recruit according to 247Sports with 10 scholarship offers. Ratliff (6-2, 310) is a third-year starter at left tackle and has interest from Kennesaw State and Mercer. Salo (6-1, 265) is a second-year starter at right tackle. Feeling the urgency of his senior season, he came to Hepler in the offseason with a promise: He would make every strength and conditioning session and every team meeting. He would play wherever the team needed him most. He just wanted to play. “He really put a little extra in,” Hepler said, “and he’s proven to be the better guy [at guard]. He’s a good success story. gram on defense in ninth grade but was converted to offense last season. Then he grew. At 6-2, 225 pounds, the junior guard quickly caught the eye of the West coaching staff and a few others. “A lot of colleges when they came in this spring picked him out right away,” Hepler said. “They were all here to look at Andrew and Jayce, but as they watched they also liked Mitch. … He’s exciting to watch right now.” Pearson (6-0, 235), senior John Delf (6-5, 260) and senior Noah Bartholomew provide depth for West. Over the offseason, Hepler and his staff did some research. They visited Alabama, Jacksonville State and Middle Tennessee’s football programs. They watched practices, looked at film and talked with their coaching staffs about blocking schemes. At the end of the process, Hepler and his staff returned to West. Bauer was a force on the line, as he graded out at 92 percent and earned first-team all-county honors last season. “This year we’ve got some good leadership with a couple of seniors and then we’ve got some young guys about to step up to the challenge,” head coach Sid Maxwell said. “We’re replacing about half the line from last year, and obviously being the head coach, they’re two specific groups that I feel like are vital for your success. That’s on defense with a defensive secondary and then on offense with your offensive line. “If you have a good offensive line, then you’ve got an opportunity to have success, no matter what scheme you’re running, so that’s really the cornerstone

of what we’re trying to do, so we put a lot of emphasis on that.” After making the playoffs for consecutive years, Lambert failed to reach the postseason for the first time since playing a varsity schedule in 2010. However, Yeremian thinks with another year of experience at the center position and a strong fall camp, the Longhorns won’t have to wait much longer for a playoff berth. “It’s a lot of responsibility [at center],” Yeremian said. “The first time I ever played center really was last year, but coach came up to me [and] said I’ve got the intelligence to do it and trusts me 100 percent with carrying the line.” Unlike some teams that stick with their starting five throughout most of the game, Maxwell said he tries to use an abundance of linemen to keep players fresh and to promote healthy competition within his team. “We try to use 8-10 linemen, hopefully, to get to the season and develop, so we keep them fresh, plus you get the competition; it keeps them from getting complacent,” he said.
