Forsyth County Schools is proud to be one of the top districts in Georgia and the United States. We are graduating more students and posting higher test scores than ever before. School districts throughout North America are visiting our schools to learn how to utilize technology to increase student achievement and improve operational efficiency. And we are expanding our partnerships with local businesses to approach education differently and prepare the future workforce. Our success has been accomplished through dedication to our mission and a commitment to continuous improvement through the cooperative efforts of all stakeholders.

The Forsyth County News is excited to be a partner with the school system to provide you the 2013-14 State of the Schools, which features a wealth of valuable information in one convenient publication. Additionally, we also provide coverage of our local students, staff and schools in both the Forsyth County News and the South Forsyth News. Our newspapers are also complimented with breaking news and video at www. forsythnews.com.

After completing three very successful strategic plans, the district is launching a new Strategic Plan this school year to guide us to 2016. This plan was developed with student, staff and community input. It describes our priorities and provides a strong Path to Greatness. As the third fastest growing school district in the United States, Forsyth County Schools has added over 8,000 new students in five years. Additionally, during this period six new schools have opened to total 34 brick and mortar schools and one virtual 6-12 school. As the ninth largest school district in Georgia, Forsyth County Schools continues to maintain the lowest tax rate in metro-Atlanta and the lowest expenditures per child.

Great is accepting no limits. For 15 years Forsyth County Schools annually opened new schools or modified existing schools. However, 2013-14 will be the second consecutive year that there are no funds available for capital improvements to support the student growth, such as renovations, additions and new school construction. 16 schools are over capacity, including four of the five countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s high schools. Across the district, class sizes are at their max and the number of trailers has doubled since last year. Our growth is projected to continue, with an estimated 8,000 new students being added in the next five years.

We are also pleased to be able to bring you valuable advertisements from local businesses. In Forsyth County, we believe a strong school-community partnership is essential for the success of both the school system and our community. To relieve overcrowding and provide room for growth, Forsyth County Schools is working on two projects. The first is redistricting, which will occur this fall for implementation during the 2014-15 school year. More information on this process, as well as opportunities for input, will be communicated in early August. The second is the 2014-2019 Facilities Plan to address instructional (such as curriculum programs, Career, Technical and Agricultural Education, special education, and technology support), facilities, safety and security improvements, and financing needs for the next five years. These partnerships will bring more locally grown products into the cafeterias as well as to provide educational opportunities for students to learn about the foods they eat. School meals are also a great value, with no increase in costs for 201314. Breakfast at school is a convenience for busy families and a great way to get the benefit of the most important meal of the day. Breakfast is $1.25 at elementary school, $1.35 at middle school, and $1.45 at

FCS is the ninth largest school system in Georgia

orsyth County Schools is projected to serve over 40,300 students this school year, and is the largest employer in the county with over 4,200 full-time employees and 1,500 substitutes. Out of 180 school districts, FCS is the ninth largest school system in Georgia. From the 2011-12 to 2012-13 school year, the district added 1,722 new students. 16 of the district’s schools have outgrown the student enrollment capacity of their schools. 99 trailers are on school campuses to accommodate the growth. FCS is projected to grow to 47,278 students by 2018.

Meeting the Needs of Every Student M

eeting the needs of every student sometimes involves processes beyond regular classroom instruction and supervision. What is SST? Every school has a Student Support Team (SST) process that functions with regular education curriculum services. SST is a collaborative effort that will include three to five educators who work with the parents to identify needs and plan alternative instructional strategies for children. After a referral, this group follows a six-step process: 1) identification of needs, 2) assessment, if necessary, 3) educational plan, 4) implementation, 5) follow-up and support and 6) continuous monitoring and evaluation. The SST will request

services that may include curriculum modification, instructional changes, intervention supports, behavior management techniques and plans, or study skill assistance.

Research shows that the more parents are involved, the higher the student achieves both academically and behaviorally What is RTI and how does it fit into the SST process? Response to Intervention (RTI) is a general

education model that promotes early identification of students who may need additional academic and behavioral support. In Georgia, a four-tier RTI pyramid has been adopted for early intervention and to determine a student’s response to that intervention. Students receive instruction based on their needs and may move within the pyramid as data supports that movement. Parents are critical to this process. ormerly, school accountability was measured through Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), in which reading, English/ language arts, and math for grades 3-8 and grade 11 were measures of success.

Achievement calculations are derived from all subject tests in the Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) in grades 3-8 and from all End-of-Course Test (EOCT) subject tests at the high school level. Progress points are based on individual student achievement over time. Schools gain points in this area by having students with normal to high growth as compared to academically similar students across the state. Achievement Gap is calculated by comparing the difference between the mean scale scores for the state and the school’s highest need students. Schools attain high scores in this area by either reducing this gap every year or by maintaining a small gap as compared to the state.

Schools are now held responsible for overall accountability in a more thorough and rigorous measure called the College and Career Ready Performance Indicators (CCRPI). The CCRPI has multiple indicators to determine a school’s performance. A numerical

Forsyth County Schools’ scores were very favorable in comparison to the state. CCRPI scores for the 2012-2013 school year are expected to be published by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement in the Fall of 2013.
