What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate.

Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

KELLEY THOMAS is McChord Club’s business operations manager. She has worked in MWR for 18 years.

Aloha! I first started working for MWR as a chef overseas in Germany. I loved the opportunities that were available to me as an MWR employee utilizing travel and leisure activities, fitness and recreation programs and community events held on the bases throughout Europe.

What started as a 13-month tour working, traveling and living a culinary adventure has turned in to an 18-year career. Working for MWR resorts overseas was my first opportunity to work with Service members and their families and was a true joy bringing smiles and excellent customer service to those who came to the resorts.

Just a few months into my contract, 9/11 struck. My culinary adventure now had a new perspective and purpose, “Serving Those Who Serve.” Being able to offer joy and respite to Service members and their families in those difficult times brought a new life purpose.

After 8 years overseas, I moved my family back home to the Hawaiian Islands and started a new chapter with MWR in the Child and Youth Services division. My daughter enrolled in the child care and school-age programs, and leadership supported my career change and desire to go back to school for more career growth within MWR. Working for CYS gave me a greater understanding of military families and the daily needs and challenges our military children face. I felt fortunate to work within an organization that cares and takes time to support our military families with excellence and understanding.

I transitioned to JBLM as a technology lab associate for the school-age program at McChord Field. Working with CYS at JBLM gave me first-hand experiences working with Air Force families and eventually led me back to my culinary roots.

As manager at McChord Club, I’m loving every moment being back planning events, conjuring up culinary delights and still serving those who serve! I look forward to this next chapter with MWR and being able to continue with the excellent opportunities that are available to myself and my family.

Outdoor rentals If you crave snow fun, you don’t need to spend a lot of money at the slopes. How about renting a tube from the Northwest Adventure Center or Adventures Unlimited for $15 per day (or $24 for the weekend)? Take off for any snowy hill along Snoqualmie or White passes and spend the day sliding downhill.

Also rent snowshoes, snow jackets and pants or cross-country ski gear if you want to traverse snowy mountainscapes.

the indoor playground! The large room is convenient for parents and fun for your kiddos.

Lifeguard opportunities Train to be a lifeguard JBLM Aquatics is offering a free American Red Cross Blended Learning lifeguard certification course Feb. 14–16 and Feb. 24–27 at Keeler Pool, located at 9993 Garfield St. at Lewis Main.

Students must be at least age 15 and pass a pretest (a 300-meter swim utilizing the front crawl or breaststroke, a two-minute legs-only tread and a timed underwater brick retrieval, along with eight hours of precourse online training).

The course takes about seven hours and classes are subject to cancellation two weeks in advance if there is low enrollment.

Seek whitewater challenges for thrilling rewards

By Ryan Yates, ODR programmer “We could barely hear each other shouting over the roar of the river. The water tumbled through a labyrinth of boulders, crashing against the rocks and pouring over drops into surging piles of recirculating water known as ‘holes.’ Though it looked at first like there was no way to get a raft through the rapid, a path began to emerge as we examined it.

“By positioning the raft on a jet of current here and using the cushion of water upstream of one of the boulders there, we would be able to guide our rafts through the chaos and out the other side. We returned to the rafts, determined to put our skills and our plan to the test.”

R

unning rivers is an intense and rewarding experience.

For many people, a guided trip down one of Washington’s many whitewater rivers is the highlight of their summer. Washington’s whitewater guides get to experience this throughout the state’s rafting season, along with the added satisfaction of sharing the beauty and thrills offered by our rivers with those who don’t have the experience or equipment to safely run them on their own.

Starting in April, the Outdoor Recreation program is offering whitewater guide training for those interested in river guiding and also for those who want to learn to run rivers on their own.

The training will be led by Brent Roth, Ryan Yates and Brad Hinton, all American Canoe Association-certified whitewater rafting instructors.

Training lasts a week with classroom instruction and on-river portions on the Nisqually and Sauk rivers. Participants will learn a variety of new skills vital to running rivers. On-shore instruction teaches students the proper way to rig rafts for a Continued on page 28.

paddle crew, how to load a trailer and how to prepare rafting crews for hazards found in swift-water environments.

Basic paddle strokes, calm-water maneuvering and flip recovery will be taught in a pool prior to the first day on the river.

Once on the river, students will be taught how to maneuver the rafts in changing currents. They’ll learn how to identify hydraulic features, how those features can affect a raft and which features should be avoided.

The final day of training features a “river olympics” where teams of students will compete in a series of challenges designed to test the skills they learned throughout the week.

Students will be on their own in the rafts, with the instructors acting as outside observers.

Graduates of the training may be given the opportunity to guide on ODR rafting trips.

Whitewater guide training runs April 27– May 1. It’s open to active duty, retirees, family members and DOD civilians. Interested participants can sign up at the Northwest Adventure Center or Adventures Unlimited.

The fight to be Bully Proof

By Lizzie Hoscheit JBLM youth, Christian Ashford, has been making local and national headlines in the past year regarding the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Military Youth of the Year competition that took place last August.

It all started when he first heard about the competition — he admitted that the prize initially drew him in, but he could never have been prepared for the impact that the experi-

ence would have on his life.

Christian decided to make teen bullying the main focus of his platform after a younger peer told him about how he had been a victim of bullying. This conversation struck a chord with Christian because he says he had also been a victim of bullying when he was younger.

He’s taken great strides in his Bully Proof initiative by creating Bully Boxes, which are discreet boxes with cards you can fill out de-

scribing the situation where bullying occurred.

The boxes are located out of plain sight so the person submitting the form can remain anonymous. This encourages kids to speak up in writing if they’re afraid to do so verbally. One of these locations is in Hillside Youth Center/ Teen Zone.

The directors, along with Christian, have noticed the difference the boxes are making.

Christian says, “The information kids submit is able to help supervisors know what to look for, address the situation and deal with it accordingly.”

Christian takes time to speak at local Boys & Girls Clubs, as well as several elementary schools, about bullying and what students can do to stop it.

Along with Bully Boxes, Christian created a Bully Proof Survival Kit that’s handed out to all of the students where he speaks. These survival kits contain candy with witty sayings such as, “Be a ‘Lifesaver.’ Report bullying!”

They also contain a card for students to write down any bullying they endured or witnessed, as well as an informational card with resources to help end bullying.

One of those resources are Christian’s own website he created — ChristianAshford.com — to expand his outreach. The website also provides personal information along with his mission and how you can help the cause.

As for the future, Christian has big plans for his Bully Proof initiative — he aims to have Bully Boxes distributed nationwide to Boys &

Girls Clubs and schools. He spoke about all the hard work that goes into it, from putting together all of the boxes to contacting schools and Boys & Girls Clubs to “sell” his Bully Box. He says, “While it’s hard work, it’s worth every bit even if it only helps one person.”

Christian also has big plans for himself. He’s starting the last semester of his senior year of high school. He’ll be receiving his acceptance to West Point in February and plans to join the military and Aviation Branch. He’s excited to become the first pilot in his family, and says it was growing up in a military family and finding such a strong community here at JBLM and other bases where they’ve lived that led him to want to join the military.

He plans for his Bully Proof initiative’s future as well as his own to grow together through volunteer work and continuing to reach out to Boys & Girls Clubs and schools.

Christian also has a new project on the horizon. Spending the last four years in the Pacific Northwest, he has increasingly noticed the issue of homelessness. Seeing the impact his anti-bullying initiative has, he wants to expand his reach to the homeless community as well.

He’s planning on organizing a statewide fundraiser for homeless youth and their families. He plans to make care packages with all of the essentials, such as soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, as well as blankets.

Christian represents the best of JBLM’s youth fighting to make a change in our community.

Categories for Volunteer of the Year are community, retiree, family, active duty and adult.

To be eligible: • Volunteer must be registered with the Volunteer Management Information System at MyArmyOneSource.com (exception, Community Volunteer of the Year nominations).

• Active duty members must be stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

• Primary volunteer service must be with organization(s) at JBLM during the 2019 calendar year (exception, primary volunteer service will be off-JBLM for Community Volunteer of the Year).

Category descriptions: • Adult Volunteer of the Year: JBLM volunteers who are spouses of active duty members and all civilian volunteers.

• Active Duty Volunteer of the Year: JBLM

volunteers who are active duty Service members stationed at JBLM. • Retiree Volunteer of the Year: JBLM volunteer must be a retired Service member, spouse of a retired Service member or retired from a civilian job.

How to get a Veteran Health ID card Good news for eligible veterans! The new Veteran Health Identification Card gives eligible veterans access to certain on-base privileges, such as certain MWR facilities, AAFES retail stores and commissaries.

Authorized caregivers are also eligible (please note: The JBLM DEERS/ID Cards office doesn’t issue these cards).

Veterans should visit va.gov/health-care/ get-health-id-card for more information on eligibility, plus instructions on obtaining a VHIC if qualifications are met.

JBLM has implemented a policy to issue an AIE badge to the spouse of an individual in possession of a VHIC. The spouse is required to present a marriage license or certificate and be escorted by the VHIC cardholder to receive the badge.

After a mandatory security vetting, approved spouses will receive a one-day pass to Waller Hall. There, a pass will be issued through Thursday, Dec. 31 or the VHIC expiration date, whichever is earlier.

The spouse must still be accompanied by the VHIC cardholder at all times at JBLM, and the badge doesn’t authorize shopping or facility use privileges.
