What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

BRUCE ANTONOWICZ is the director of the Sports, Fitness & Aquatics program at JBLM. He has worked in MWR for 28 years.

2

I remember swimming at Kimbro Pool when I was growing up in a military Family. Even though I wasn’t the strongest swimmer, I wanted to become a lifeguard. I challenged myself to do better as I began my first job as a lifeguard in 1991, and I haven’t stopped yet. In my mid-20s, I took on coaching the Fort Lewis Dolphins swim team, knowing I could build something better, and worked hard to develop a winning team. Sure enough, the team placed 10th in a 120-team regional meet — an impressive win from where they’d been before. From being a pool manager in the mid-‘90s to being director of Sports, Fitness & Aquatics now, my 28-year career has shown me how important fitness and sports are to each Family member. My motto is “strong body, strong mind,” which our program provides through opportunities for readiness for Service members, stress relief for spouses, general fitness and much more for the JBLM community. We’re here to take care of our patrons — to help you stay strong and healthy. JBLM has eight sports and fitness facilities, three indoor pools and a seasonal outdoor pool. We offer a variety of activities — swim lessons, water aerobics, intramural sports for both active duty personnel and civilians, several runs and more. I encourage you to sample some of our free fitness classes at the Fitness Resolution Fair, and sign up for intramural sports we’re currently offering (see pages 20–25). To me, MWR means helping ensure you have ways to develop a strong body and strong mind while you’re here at JBLM.

Alpine climbing course opens up new horizons By Scott Schissel, ODR mountaineering guide and instructor ne domineering scene at JBLM is majestic Mount Rainier (when the weather isn’t hiding the view). Some of you have asked, “What it would take to stand atop that mountain?” — arguably one of the most beautiful, iconic mountains in the continental United States. Sure, you can sign up and pay one of the many outdoor guide and service companies for a two- or three-day climb of Mount Rainier; however, most people who are led on a guided trip to the summit return home wanting more adventures. Why keep paying for someone else to guide you on your next mountain adventure when you can get the training and do it yourself? That’s the question we can answer for those of you wanting to climb other mountains over the course of your lifetime.

O

A lifetime of climbing Mountaineering is pure adventure! Alpine climbing and mountaineering encompasses the full range of mountain climbing disciplines, including rock climbing, ice climbing and snow climbing in an “alpine” or high-mountain environment. JBLM’s Outdoor Recreation Program prepares you for a lifetime of climbing starting with its basic alpine climbing course. The course combines classroom lecture, field instruction and climbing experience designed to provide the basic skills necessary to safely climb rock, snow and the glaciated peaks of the Pacific Northwest. The course runs approximately three months with seven evening clinics with lectures, a two-day winter overnight trip and a one-day rock-climbing trip. Continued on page 28.

Attendance at all lectures and field trips is required for graduation. Training covers selection and care of equipment, wilderness travel and camping, glacier travel, belaying, rappelling, rock climbing, crevasse rescue and many other topics. During field trips and actual climbs, each student will put their skills to practical use with experienced mountaineers. Previous experience in off-trail hiking and camping is helpful but not mandatory.

Are you ready for mountaineering? Participants in the basic alpine climbing course should come with a desire to learn technical mountaineering skills and a commitment that requires a significant investment in time, energy and money. Solid overall physical conditioning, good cardiovascular strength and psychological stamina are needed — students will experience travel in difficult terrain with vertical exposure while carrying a heavy pack in all types of weather conditions. If you prefer to start off with a little less intensity, we also offer a less expensive full-

spectrum training that will get you to the point of teaming up with other like-minded climbers. We provide transportation to and from field trips, up-to-date climbing techniques, use of the mountaineering guidebook, “Freedom of the Hills,” and most of your climbing equipment (no requirement to purchase expensive mountaineering boots and tents during the course!). Although the course is demanding, the rewards are great. The acquisition of these skills opens the door to a lifetime of outdoor enjoyment. Are you willing and ready?

How to sign up Drop by Adventures Unlimited at McChord Field for a free basic alpine climbing course information night at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15. If you decide to sign up, the first course begins in February and lasts about three months. The entire course costs $450. Course outline and sign-ups are at JBLMmwrRegistration.com. Adventures Unlimited is at 739 Battery Rd. For more information about alpine climbing, email JBLMalpineclub@gmail.com.
