Behold the dingy, dark, drizzly days of January! The decs came down and she packed away the fairy lights. She was, however, quietly confident that in eleven months’ time they would reliably twinkle once more - these days they did. Years ago, the annual unpacking and plugging-in of the tree lights had been a thrilling festive family experience. Sometimes they’d work and all and sundry would go “aah” in wonder and relief. Mostly relief. Occasionally they’d briefly, fiercely glow and fuse the electrics - the blackout filled with expletive littered calls for candles. Generally though, the little coloured orbs remained stubbornly dark. Someone could be relied upon to state the obvious “they worked last year” and there would be a frantic search for spare bulbs, followed by a tedious testing of every... single... light.. Yet somehow it had been just as much a Yuletide staple as the box of seasonal satsumas; orange spheres individually wrapped in tissue paper. But without the sparkle and cheer of the warm LEDs, the world appeared as if through the grey translucence of tracing paper. She looked wistfully out of the window and sighed… Christmas Day had come and gone. Again. So anticipated and, this year in particular, so needed. But it was, at the end of the day, just a day. As a child, it seemed to last forever. From the pre-dawn excitement of the parcels at the bottom of the bed, to the last game of ker-plunk in the early hours. Then, tummy full of turkey sandwiches and dates, crawling back under a duvet scattered with shreds of wrapping paper. Boxing Day next; cold meats and bubble-and-squeak. She remembered it so well. But the days between Christmas and New Year? Not so much. All a bit of a blur - a gap in the calendar largely filled with turkey soup and lots of films. Films watched between dog walks in damp weather. These were the lost days, the vague days, the not-still-Christmas and the notyet-New-Year days. Nameless days. Then one year she’d spent Christmas in Germany and the period after 25th, before New Year’s Eve assumed an actual identity. The Germans call it ‘Zwischen den Jahren’, ‘Between the Years’. Yes! Wasn’t it, though? Nothing counted – especially not calories, yippee! – because this was no-when land; neither this year, nor the next.

4

In Germany it was a time of snow, of Christmas markets and glugging gluhwein. And back in the good old, grey old GB, she could legitimately float about in her pj’s, scoff the remaining After Eights and knock back the advocaat. Bliss. Now, it transpired, that here too the nowhere days were nameless no more. The hospitality industry had given birth to ‘Twixmas’. After banishing the initial mental image of a chocolate coated caramel shortbread (other biscuits are available), she warmed to the name. There was a twinklyness about it, a sprinkling of festive fairy dust. Apparently hotels offered ‘Twixmas’ breaks - and with the embryonic notion of booking one, she’d mentioned it to Himself. “So what about it, darling? It’ll give us something to look forward to in the come-down after Christmas.” His habitually affable expression was replaced by his faintly horrified one. “What – go away after Boxing Day? I need a spell of nil-by-mouth before New Year to recover from my food coma, not buffet breakfasts and three course dinners.” Yes, well, there was that. “Although” he considered “I like that it’s something original. Not Yule and Samhain hijacked and repackaged as Christmas and Halloween. We’ve enthusiastically embraced Black Friday and it’s probably only a matter of time before we go all stars and stripes and adopt Thanksgiving and 4th July too.. So this ‘Twixmas’ might become a big thing in its own right. Filling a gap in the market and mining the festive season for all it’s worth. Smart.” So conceptually, Himself approved. Sort of. It gave her something to work with, anyway. Next year she might try and skip Christmas altogether and move straight on to Twixmas – cut out all that interim hard work. Hmmnn… tempting, but unlikely. Turning away from the monochrome landscape outside her window and the depressing post-decoration dreariness within, she could only hope that someone would come up with something to mine the gap before Valentines... Then she spotted that someone already had. Of course. Silly - there it was on the calendar. Suddenly all that haggis in the shops made sense. But she wasn’t Scottish and, frankly, Auld Lang Syne made her weep. Should she let little details like that get between her and the delicious Chieftain o’ the Pudding Race? Not likely! Burns Night supper - Bring it on…

COMMUN ITY / PROPERTY The Country House Company Market predictions are unusually difficult at this time given the overwhelming influence of the stamp duty initiatives last year and discussions around inflation and interest rate changes. However; One steadfast in these ever-changing times is that houses will undoubtedly be sold or let in 2022. The property market is integral to life choices and the economy, and whilst prices and rental yields may fluctuate, house moves will still happen. As the New Year begins, we are launching a variety of properties new to the market; a stylish architect designed contemporary home tucked away in the centre of West Meon for sale at guide price

Thelwell Proves a Real Draw Tim Craven, Curator of Southampton City Art Gallery gave an illustrated talk to Alresford Art Society tracing the life, passions and artistic development of Norman Thelwell from his early years and formative wartime experiences to Tim Craven, Curator of Southampton City Art Gallery, David Thelwell and his subsequent rise to become one Art Society Chairman Sue Gentry. of the nation’s best-known and loved cartoonists of his era. Thelwell’s international fame was boosted by his most iconic and instantly recognised subject of small, fat, hairy ponies ridden at full-tilt by alarming young ladies. Indeed, the term Thelwell pony is now part of the English language. Thelwell loved the Hampshire countryside and lived for many years in Timsbury. He was an early and passionate campaigner for the environment and his many cartoons of factory farming, the destruction of habitat and pollution came together in his 1971 publication, The Effluent Society. His greatest love though was for his ‘serious’ watercolour landscapes, a medium of which he was a true master. Craven explained these art historical influences: the Romantic Movement and picturesque in general and JMW Turner, John Sell Cotman and Roland Hilder in particular. Thelwell’s distinctive and evocative paintings reflected his profound love for the English countryside and members were delighted to be able to see original artwork and cartoons by Thelwell and meet his son David, who was a special guest at the Society’s Christmas meeting.

Winchester Councillor Fiona Isaacs Report Christmas tree takedown - Alresford With fellow volunteers from The Chamber of Commerce and The Alresford Pigs, we will be taking down the trees on 8th January 2022. Wishing everyone a happy festive break and all the very best for 2022. Welcome Back Fund Further to the original Return to the High Street Safely Fund an additional £110,000 government funding as part of the Welcome Back fund had been secured. A delivery plan was discussed with stakeholders across the city and market towns. Sadly this project was poor in its delivery, and some Councils and organisations reported delays in getting the funds. Although there is now an officer assigned to this , to hopefully improve things, I did feed back the issues at the Business and Housing Policy meeting this month. Hopefully we can see some improvement on this. Station Car park update - Alresford In March I attended a meeting to review the issues relating to the renegotiation of the lease with Mid Hampshire Railway.(MHR) WCC only managed to negotiate a 3 year revised lease for and extra £10K making the new yearly lease cost £25K. We were advised that the charges in this area were increasing and also restricted . I was informed this month, on following this up, that they still had not got the signs and the necessary orders sorted and properly and at best it would be March 2022. This will mean in reality, that we have lost a year of extra fees to support the other parking areas within the town( Either the Dean Car park or enforcement). So effectively we have lost 1 yr out of 3yrs of income through this. This also means that we have had to pay the increased lease cost of £25,000 out of the original income. I can see why residents are concerned about WCC lack of support for the parking within our area when 4.5yrs we still have no Dean Car Park, 4.5yrs we still have no Parking strategy and now we have lost 1 out of 3years of income. I continue to raise the awareness of these issues to ensure we continue to move forward . The Dean Car Park - Update I attended a site meeting with planning officers and some members of the WCC cabinet to hopefully express the concerns over the lack of support on this. Whilst the owners have taken income reductions twice, the now extra costs to the developers of Nitrate fees have seriously put issues into the viability of the project. If we have less than the originally planned 47 spaces, then its just embarrassing that after 4.5years of lack of support on this approved project, we may end up with less car parking spaces and not more. I have urged officers, planning and members of the cabinet that somehow we must try and sort this out to ensure the town receives the spaces it desperately needs. After further discussions with the developer, I raised concerns over the Car park being at the back with regards to security and safety etc. I asked why the car park could not be at the front and her asked if I could

12

enquire from planning if they would relook at the restrictions of curtsied development. As a result I have indeed raised this question to see if we can get more spaces in and also to make it safer and nicer to use. The Dean Crossroads I met with a lead officer from WCC planning department. I once again expressed concerns and frustration that after 4.5yrs of a parking strategy being requested in 2017 and ordered, its not been done. The increasing concerns by residents and users of the Dean have escalated and things are only going to get worse when the newly built homes become occupied. He confirmed that Alresford (in his words) “has been a bit neglected” and he would help to relook into this. Supporting Our Community • Lighting up Alresford - Tree Tree takedown - 8th January 2022 • Christmas Donkey walkabout - I was thrilled to be supporting this fantastic idea. The Christmas Nativity scene and Donkey walkabout on Tuesday 21st December from 1.30pm - 3pm in the Meryon Road area. I hope it becomes an annual event. • Community Police issues- I was pleased to be able to assist with some issues of theft within our ward. Whilst one big issue was dealt withsuccessfully, I am mindful that as a wider rural community we still have issues of rural crime. I continue to support the residents who raise these and the officers who look after our ward. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you wish about these. The latest issue in Itchen Abbas was successfully delt with and I was happy to help she the information to our officers who made a formal arrest. • Dual Bin - Water Lane - I was asked by some Parish Councillors to help with getting the bins on Waterlane replaced with Dual bins. I am pleased to say that this is now being organised. Road Signs After being contacted by several residents in Marshals Yard, who requested help with the issue of a lack of roadsigns, I am please to report that this is being dealt with. As its in a conservation area a site visit has been carried out and the appropriate road sign will be ordered and put up where appropriate. The developers should have done this, but failed to do so apparently. This will take a couple of months to be made and put up due to the specialist sign required. Leaf Clearing WCC are responsible for ensuring that the footpaths are cleared of leaves. Unfortunately several footpaths have become very dangerous. I have raised these with Winchester City Council and these are logged. Special concern was Grange Road, The avenue Perins schools side and Bishop Sutton road from East street. Bishops Sutton Footpath Many will see that the initial cut back has begun on the footpath in order to carry out a feasibility study that I requested. I have managed to secure some finds for enhancements but hope that once the feasibility study is completed we can look at putting a case forward as a joint CIL application for a proper enhanced path. My meetings continue on this.

COMMUNITY Jackie’s County Corner January 2022

Happy New Year! After nearly two tumultuous years of the pandemic , it seems especially relevant that a new year finds us all vowing to lead healthier lives. I hope you feel well and strong as you read this today. This month’s County Corner includes healthy options for you- without going to the gym… There are a wealth of exercise options that you can follow in your own home, one of which is to keep moving, even if you have arthritis. ‘Let’s move with Leon’ is a programme on www.VersusArthritis.org

The Avenue, Alresford

"The Avenue was gifted to the Bailiffs and Burgesses of Alresford by the Bishop of Winchester on 23rd September 1869 for the recreational use of the inhabitants of the Town and the Town Trust succeeded the Bailiffs and Burgesses in 1890 acquiring its assets and responsibilities including the Avenue and the trees in Broad Street.

Hampshire’s Public Health team are offering a scheme for those of us whose BMI has reached 28. (to calculate your BMI go to www.shapeup4lifehampshire.co.uk) This is a new free Public Health programme (online or in person) to incentivise us to change our eating habits not just for now, but for life. Go to www.hants.gov.uk and search ‘healthy weight programme’ or call 023 8218 0287 The County Council has received £7m funds from the Department for Work and Pensions to distribute over the winter for food, fuel and utility/ heating costs. 50% of the funds are for families, the remainder for other vulnerable households. Parents of children can apply through schools and colleges. Citizens Advice are able to channel this money to residents. I urge you to ask anyone who needs help to contact Citizens Advice direct 0808 278 7861, or refer to me if you wish. You can also use a Community Pantry whatever your circumstances, giving you at least £15 food when you purchase a £5 voucher. Open Mon—Thurs, 10-2pm, delivery service available. For more details go to www.unit-12.org , call/text 07547 932511

The Avenue is the most important feature of our Town with its western gateway and the many visitors admire its splendour as they drive into Alresford. Ernie Jeffs is the Trustee responsible for the Avenue and he works with the key contractors to ensure that the Avenue is properly maintained. Recent work includes: • • • •

Grass cutting usually 10-13 times per year, performed by Peter Bridges over last 10 years Leaf collection in November/December by Bill Wellings who also advises on grass and soil cultivation. Tree maintenance following 4 yearly tree surveys by Chris Mathews/Adam Maskill. C&D trees have just finished the work recommended in The Avenue and Broad Street and agreed with Winchester City Council. The work involved removing a tree in Broad Street which will be replaced once the ground has been prepared. Recent planting of more spring flowering bulbs on grass areas on the south side by the Rotary Club of Alresford.

Children’s Matters: School staff are amazing! I have been visiting schools in my division to thank schools for everything they are doing and to talk about the impact of the last two years on children. The variants of Covid 19 risk normal school life again, and I’m pleased to see the Children’s Commissioner, Rachael de Souza condemning the idea that we could close schools again. Ofsted resumed inspections in the Autumn Term and it was pleasing to see two local schools being recognised as ‘good’. Don’t forget that the last date to apply for an Autumn 2022 primary school place is 15th January 2022: forms online or from your local school. Are you waiting for gigabit broadband? Several valiant organisers in my division set up Community Fibre Partnerships in 2020/2021 to apply for faster broadband from Openreach through the gigabit scheme. The Department of Culture Media and Sport has been overwhelmed by interest (which is no surprise!) and a complicated picture of delays is appearing. Contact me direct or search ‘broadband’ for up-to-date details on my website Cllr Jackie Porter www.jackieporter.co.uk Jackie.porter@hants.gov.uk 01962 791054 (ansaphone) and tel/text 07973 696085

• Additional areas have been restored where they have become overgrown and will be maintained in the future and the boundary line with Perins School has been tidied up. Robin Atkins, Chair of the Town Trust said “The Avenue which is universally admired by residents is a significant benefit to the whole Town yet the financial costs are borne almost entirely by the Trust with support from the Friends of The Avenue where 23 households in Alresford make annual contributions together with four local businesses namely, Charters, Hellards, C&D Trees and Richard Steel, Funeral Directors. We have recently spent over £10,000 on the tree work and annual maintenance costs over last 6 years is running at £9,000 pa The question is whether the Town Trust should bear all these costs for the Avenue which benefits all the residents of the town?" Kind regards, Robin Atkins Chair,NATT

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Leftover Turkey Enchiladas

18

An ideal and delicious way of using up all that left over Christmas Turkey

thickened, about 5 minutes. Season to taste with salt & pepper; reserve.

Ingredients • 400g of shredded cooked turkey • 350g of grated cheddar cheese • 3 mild fresh green chillies, finely sliced • Small bunch of fresh coriander • 12 x 6 inch soft corn tortillas • 300g enchilada sauce (can be made or available from Waitrose) • 1 onion, finely chopped • 1 teaspoon of salt • 3 tablespoons of chilli powder • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 2 teaspoons of cumin • 2 teaspoons of sugar • 1 can of tomato passata • 1 cup water

Enchiladas : Adjust the oven rack to the middle position. Heat oven to 400 F. Create the turkey mixture by combining the turkey, 100g of the cheddar, fresh chilli, coriander and 1/2 of the sauce. Season with salt & pepper to taste and set aside.

Directions Sauce : Heat the oil in a frying pan, on a medium heat. Add the onion and salt and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the chili powder, garlic, cumin and sugar. Cook 15 seconds. Stir in the tomato pasatta, enchilada sauce and a little water. Bring to a simmer and cook until slightly

Lightly coat the enchiladas with vegetable oil. Pour the remaining sauce over the enchiladas to coat thoroughly. Sprinkle with remaining cheddar cheese down the center of the enchiladas. Cover the dish with foil and bake 20-25 minutes, until heated through. Remove foil and continue to bake until the cheddar cheese browns, about 5 minutes and then serve.

Stack the tortillas on a microwave safe plate. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave on high until warm, about 40-60 seconds. Lightly coat a suitable sized baking tray with vegetable oil. Spread the warm tortillas out on a clean counter top. Place some of the turkey mixture evenly down the center of each tortilla. Tightly roll the tortilla and then lay seam side down in the baking tray.

COMMUNITY / PROFESSIONAL The Return of The Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition Hampshire Fare, the county food and drink group, is delighted to announce the return of The Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition in 2022. The Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition, established and run by Hampshire Fare, was last held in 2020 with the awards ceremony taking place shortly before the first lockdown. With consideration given to the safety of both judges and competitors, it was decided not to hold the Competition in 2021. However, the Competition is returning in the New Year with new categories and new venues. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, comments: “At Hampshire Fare we are very proud of The Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition which has attained national prestige. We regularly receive enquiries about entry criteria from across the country. However, although our competition has national clout, it is only open to entrants within Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, including members and non-members of Hampshire Fare. “One of our regular entrants, Crow Farm Shop, Ringwood, having repeatedly won the title Champion for their pork pies in the Competition, was singled out for inclusion on Remarkable Places to Eat in the New Forest on BBC TV due to their award-winning pies. The Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition’s Champion Certificate was shown on screen; that is the value and standing of this Competition!” Following a year’s break, The Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition has been given a refresh and will include new categories, alongside traditional favourites, that reflect consumers’ evolving tastes. The Competition’s awards ceremony will now be held in the spectacular setting of Southampton Football Ground, St Mary’s Stadium, with the evening compered by Lou Hannan, Presenter of the Afternoon Show on BBC Radio Solent. The Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition is only possible due to the support of independent sponsors. These sponsors are usually businesses supplying trade services to the food industry. However, in 2022, in an exciting new development, new consumer-facing sponsors have stepped forward. The Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition is open to entrants in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and both members and non-members of Hampshire Fare. All entry forms (which can be downloaded from www.hampshirefare.co.uk) must be completed and returned to Hampshire Fare by 31st January 2022. For more information, contact the team at info@hampshirefare.co.uk or 02380 733830.

WELLBEING / ENTERTAINMENT Camilonthehill - Personal Trainer Hello, my name is Camilla. I am a 44 year old mum to two gorgeous children. I am a qualified Personal Trainer who is hugely passionate about motivating, inspiring, guiding and supporting others to get healthy through regular exercise. I believe incorporating exercise into our daily routine quite simply makes life easier and more enjoyable. We all know how tough life can be, juggling work, children, friends, family and social life, but by spending as little as 30 minutes a day on ourselves, exercising and moving our body, we can guarantee a happier, healthier, stronger and fitter you. Through the power of exercise you can be a better friend, work colleague, parent, and partner! Exercise is great but as we get older, maintaining good strength and flexibility is also crucial. As we reach our 30's, our bone density and muscle mass decrease but strength training can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis which women are susceptible to, particularly around the menopause. It can also help us feel strong in body and in mind. Improve productivity levels, sleep, anxiety, co-ordination, weight management as well as reducing the risk of injury, it can improve immune system, digestion, blood pressure, bone density, as well as lowering the risk

of Alzheimer’s disease. It also helps avoid diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis and certain cancers…. the list goes on! My classes therefore, are a combination of cardio and strength work. I offer local group sessions, remote classes and individual Personal Training for women who prefer the additional support of one-to-one sessions - a fantastic way to get started. Getting started is often the hardest part, but once you get used to that exhilarating ‘post workout’ feeling, exercise will soon become part of your lifestyle. Just setting aside a little ‘me time’ each day in 2022 could transform your whole life. If you’re ready, but feel you could do with some support with your fitness journey, drop me a line. I would love to hear from you. Instagram @camilonthehill FB @camil_on_the_hill email: camillacasey@yahoo.co.uk Tel: 07966 158117 www.camilonthehill.com

Braving The Black Chair Alresford will be represented in the famous Black Chair on Mastermind this month. Local resident Lisa von Fircks has made it through three rounds of auditions to become a contender in the long-running BBC quiz show. With its menacing theme tune, the glare of the spotlight and quick-fire questions, it is widely regarded as the toughest quiz on British television. Its creator, a former RAF gunner, drew inspiration from his experiences of being interrogated during World War II. Prisoners Of War were asked their name, rank and number – hence why contenders are asked their name, occupation and specialist subject. Lisa, of Shepherds Down, said “The format of the show was designed to intimidate its contestants, and I found out it certainly does! There is no rehearsal or warm-up and when that famous dramatic music starts it is nerve-wracking. The host has the tougher job though – to read those convoluted questions so quickly yet clearly is real skill, and he films five episodes a day”

28

First broadcast in 1972, the programme celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. To appear on the prestigious show is an ambition of many quiz-lovers. Thousands applied for a place in this year’s heats, which are recorded at BBC TV studios in Belfast. “Mastermind has been running since I was a baby, it used to be shown on Sunday evenings, hosted by Magnus Magnusson. Having grown up with it and been an avid viewer all these years it felt thrilling to now take part. I’m delighted to have sat in the iconic black chair and to have contributed to this much-loved programme.” “My episode should be a good one to watch on as it features an unusually high score….unfortunately it isn’t mine!” The episode aired on Monday 3rd January 2022 at 7.30pm on BBC2 and is available thereafter on BBCiPlayer

How to Shop Wisely for Furniture in the Winter Sales

1.

2. Examine the springs and legs

Look at the wood

Solid wood furniture is the strongest but typically more expensive. Furniture legs should always be solid wood, never plastic, or particle board… but it is quite acceptable for tops to be constructed from a less expensive core veneered with better-quality or exotic woods. Watch out for particle board laminated with plastics… it wont last long as it is prone to water damage and bending under stress.

Before you purchase a sofa take off any scatters and the seat cushions and press down on the under seat springs, they should push down and spring right back into place immediately. Coiled springs will JLYH \RX D ÀUPHU ¶VLW· DQG VHUSHQWLQH VSULQJV ZLOO EH VRIWHU /RRN XQGHUQHDWK IRU D ÀIWK OHJ LQ WKH PLGGOH which will provide more overall support for the seating platfom…cheaper models will likely only have 4 legs.

Make sure that knobs are tight and don’t jiggle, latches work, and the drawer or door shuts smoothy and evenly. Open doors should remain so and not snap closed while you’re using the cabinet.

4. Do the cushion test Ercol Romana Collection

5.

Look for firm seat and back cushions that are fully covered in the matching fabric both sides so that they can be flipped… they will last longer. Washable removable covers are a bonus.

6. Glue and nails check

Consider your lifestyle

If you have a large, hyper dog or children then that white suede couch is not for you! If you have kids or pets, stick with washable/durable materials, dark colours and stain-resistant fabrics like microfibre, synthetic velvets or leather. Look for a ‘forever’ colour that won’t go out of style.

Remember screws are always better than nails and wood joints are preferable to glue to create long lasting, sturdy pieces of furniture.

A big win for nature as heathlands bounce back

I

South Downs National Park

t’s a wildlife oasis rarer than the rainforest and home to some of Britain’s most endangered reptile, amphibian and bird species. Now, five years on from the start of an incredible conservation effort, the future of heathlands in the south of England is looking much brighter. The Heathlands Reunited project has successfully conserved and enhanced 23,825 hectares – or 18,000 football pitches – of lowland heath. An independent scientific assessment has revealed that the initiative has been “significant” in restoring the ecological condition of the habitat. The £2m initiative started in 2016 after backing from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and is now coming to its conclusion. The project has seen amazing biodiversity success stories, including the return of the woodlark to key sites, recovery of the endangered field cricket, Dartford Warbler and Natterjack toad, and new habitat for the UK’s rarest lizard, the majestic sand lizard. The project focused on heathland at 41 sites, stretching from Bordon, in Hampshire, to Pulborough in West Sussex. The need was profound because less than one per cent of former heathland remains in the National Park and what was left was very fragmented, leaving animals and plants vulnerable to extinction in these isolated “island” habitats. Heathlands are, in fact, ‘man-made’ and only exist because our ancestors used them to dig peat for fuel, harvest heather and graze animals, unwittingly creating a unique mosaic of habitats which many plants and animals now can’t survive without. Half a decade on and the project partners are celebrating some big achievements, including: • Conserving almost 600 hectares of heathland by significantly increasing conservation grazing by cattle. • A total of 366 hectares of heathland has benefited from conservation works to improve its condition, including scrub clearance, heather mowing, and bracken control, aimed at creating and connecting heathland. • Woolmer Forest, a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Hampshire and home to 12 out of 13 of Britain’s native reptiles and amphibian species, has significantly improved and is now in “favourable condition” for wildlife. • Supporting the reintroduction of the iconic field cricket to expand the number of surviving colonies, as part of the Back From The Brink project. • Supporting the restoration of heathland for the reintroduction of the Natterjack toad next year at

36

Blackmoor in Hampshire. It follows the purchase of 20 hectares of Blackmoor last year by the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust – supported by fundraising, as well as Section 106 funds from the National Park Authority. • Heathland bird surveys carried out in the project area show that protected bird numbers have increased over the five years of Heathlands Reunited, particularly the Dartford Warbler in East Hampshire. A survey of heathland sites in the district revealed the number of Dartford Warblers spotted went up from 36 in 2016 to 132 in 2021. • After several years of absence, RSPB Pulborough has two successful successful breeding pairs of woodlark and has also seen an increase in the number of churring nightjars. • A total of 349 events have taken place, with over 16,000 people participating in a range of activities aimed at raising awareness and encouraging people to care for their local heath. • Nearly 115 volunteers have dedicated almost 50,000 hours to help look after the heaths. • Reconnecting communities to their local heathland through the National Park’s first Sculpture Trail and a makeover to the 65-mile long Serpent Trail. • Strong partnership of organisations working together to protect our lowland heath habitat for future generations. The project was delivered by 11 partners – Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, Forestry England, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Hampshire County Council, Lynchmere Society, Ministry of Defence, National Trust, Natural England, RSPB, South Downs National Park Authority, and Sussex Wildlife Trust. While the project has now officially comes to its conclusion, the Heathlands Reunited partnership will continue and the fight to save and restore heaths goes on under the Heathlands Reunited Wealden Heath SAMM project. This communityfocused project brings together 12 like-minded organisations to raise awareness and encourage sustainable use of these sites through public engagement events and activities. The project focuses on the Shortheath Common Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and the Wealden Heath Special Protection Area (SPA) which sit in, and are on the boundary of, the South Downs National Park. For more information visit www.southdowns.gov.uk/helpyour-heaths. The 18,000 football pitches represents the size of the project area (23, 825 hectares). Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. any three carpets That said, we are Have for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is and your three moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured upflat-screen for to move electricalsuite items, freshened in particular tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. just £167! Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Our parks The playgrounds at Sun Hill Rec and Arlebury Park have had a full refresh - painting, repairs and a good clean. In Arlebury Park playground, the spider has been repainted and for the first time he has a name. We received 23 suggestions and our thanks to everyone who took part especially Alfie who came up with the winning name. Our spider is now called Incy and has this stencilled on his back.

We are also delighted that the little wooden boat has been beautifully repaired by Alresford Men’s shed and given a lick of bright red paint. Our grateful thanks to them for their skill and care. We know our younger residents will be pleased the little red boat is back in action ready to set sail on more adventures.

Alresford Rotary - January 2022

Allen Gallery Exhibtions

Martyn Kee – About Faces: Local artist’s exhibition - Until 23rd January 2022. In the Café area. FREE

Many thanks for all the support you gave Alresford Rotary in 2021 enabling it to help those in need and environmental projects both locally and internationally. You may still have time to enter the Alresford Christmas Song and Music Contest. Entries close on January 8th – see our website or email rotary.alresford.giving@gmail. com Happy New Year from Alresford Rotary! What is Rotary? Rotary is one of the largest voluntary service organisations in the world, open to everyone, where memebers can give as much time as they wish, helping with local causes and events, combining friendship and networking. 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide see solutions not problems and make things happen and make a difference, promoting peace and helping others in communities around the world every day to fight life threatening diseases like Polio, HIV/AIDS and Malaria and to provide and maintain clean water, sanitation and hygiene.

From Dawn to Dusk - A selection of paintings on rural themes by W H Allen (after whom the Gallery is named) Until 19th March. In the Main Exhibition area. FREE

Allen Gallery Talk

A Parcel of Gold by Jo Smith, Chairman of The Headley Society. Mr Smith’s talk is based on a series of Nineteenth-Century letters discovered in a bureau. They were written by Ellen Read to her brother, a paper-maker in Headley. Ellen went to Australia to seek a better life away from the poverty of Portsea. She spent most of her life in the gold fields of Bendigo, and her letters give an insight into the (hard) daily life encountered by the Pioneering families. Thursday 10th February 7.30 pm. FREE – donations to the Friends of the Curtis Museum & Allen Gallery most welcome.

Rotary is dedicated to seven areas of focus the newest of which highlights the preservation of our planet and its resources. Rotary is committed to supporting activities that strengthen conservation, advancing ecological sustainability and fostering harmony between communities and the environment to build international relationships, improve lives and create a better world to support its peace efforts and End Polio forever. What are Alresford Rotary’s plans for 2022? Subject to Covid restrictions … we will be involved locally in the town’s celebrations of the Queen’s Platinum jubilee celebrations in early June as well as holding “Probably mid Hampshire’s Quiz of the Year” in April , running Alresford’s 10k road race in June, collecting shoeboxes of Christmas presents for disadvantaged children in the autumn, putting on Alresford’s bonfire and fireworks event in November, and selling Christmas Trees and encouraging participation in our third Christmas song and music contest in December. We will also be at the Watercress Festival in May and the Agricultural show in September.

A new issue of Alton Papers is now available (No. 25), price £3. This issue covers topics such as the history of Adlam’s/Buck’s Bakery, the Early Banks of Alton, and two eye-witness accounts of life at Thedden Grange just before and just after WW2. The first is from a boy of 14 whose family were amongst the Grange staff; the second a letter sent home by a German prisoner-of-war housed in the grounds.

What difference will YOU make in 2022? Alresford Rotary cannot run its events relying solely on the efforts of its membership. Support from others in the community is essential. Please contact us if you’re happy for your details to be added to our list of “helpers” or are interested in joining Rotary. Rotarians are people of action and Rotary is fun. Alreford Rotary needs YOU - make time for fun and volunteering in 2022!
