Bespoke Kitchen Fitting & Kitchen Makeovers

Beautiful Made-To-Measure Kitchens I found Happy Kitchens on Houzz, and I decided to go with them as the reviews were encouraging and I liked that they were a small, local company. From the outset, Ben was extremely professional and understands exactly what the client wants. The Happy Kitchen team were all fantastic; punctual, hardworking, incredibly tidy and most importantly they really cared about the quality of their work. We are really thrilled with our new kitchen and it has totally exceeded our expectations. Joanne McCarthy Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

COMMUN ITY / PROPERTY The process of selling a property can be much faster if you are prepared with the necessary information. Since 2013, the description and sale of property has come under the CPR (Consumer Protection Against Unfair Trading Regulations). This means that if something is not disclosed that could legitimately affect a buyer’s decision, you could be prosecuted. To help ensure that the correct information has been disclosed, a vendor is supplied with a Property Information Form (TA6). Any disputes with neighbours, planning permission nearby or building work done on the property should be listed here. Things that can be concerning, like pests, Japanese knotweed or a previous sale falling through due to the results of a survey, need to be disclosed. People have the right to know what they’re walking into. Some examples of what needs to be disclosed: • If the property is on a flight path or in view of a motorway, or

there are plans for this to occur • If a violent death took place in the property • If there are high levels of crime in the area • If there are pests or Japanese knotweed problems either currently or in the past • If your neighbours have an Anti Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) • Any structural issues with the property • Any planning permission, whether it was granted, is pending, or was denied • Guarantees or insurance policies like underpinning, or damp proofing • Planning limitations • Boundary issues or shared rights of way Being upfront and clear in advance will mean your property is sold more promptly and there are no issues afterwards. Failing to disclose relevant information is a criminal offence. There is also a fixtures and fittings form to be completed before selling. This will tell your buyer what is included in the purchase. Be clear about what you're taking and what you're leaving to avoid any difficulty closer to exchange. Ultimately have an honest and open relationship with your agent and be guided by them.

As ever brimming with beautiful contemporary art, with over 250 paintings, sculptures and ceramics from both recognised artists, along with so much exciting new talent, the exhibition runs from 23rd April to 14th May at the Old Grain Barn, Goodworth Clatford, near Stockbridge.

The gallery – the largest in Hampshire – has the advantage of acres of space so that not only can a vast cross-section of artwork, across a broad variety of subjects, genres and media be exhibited, larger pieces to fill bigger walls can be hung too. Featuring original work from over 60 artists, all the exhibits are meticulously sourced from all over the UK and abroad to ensure these shows are always exciting, sometimes surprising, and normally have something to fall in love with that is hard to leave behind! Certainly with so much diversity under one roof, there’s something to appeal to all tastes and budgets. Comfortably furnished, with a stylish smattering of rugs, lamps, tables and chairs, this is a magical venue in which to enjoy some truly memorable art in a relaxed yet professional environment. It’s a hidden gem in the Hampshire countryside too, with plenty of parking and wonderful walks nearby. Nadia – an artist herself – is passionate about finding the dream piece for her clients and will always advise on what might suit their tastes and spaces best. She is also happy to bring suitable artwork to a client’s house and will leave pieces behind to be ‘lived with’ to see if they work well while the client makes a decision. The Spring Hampshire Art Show will be open every day from 11am-5pm (closed on Mondays) with preview drinks on Saturday 23rd April (12-2pm). For those who want to do some research on the treats in store, all artwork is available online at nadiawaterfield. com. If you want to see yet more eclectic and original art from Nadia Waterfield Fine Art and are in the area, pop in to our Bruton gallery. In order to make our art as assessable to as many people as possible we take interest free payments over 10 months.

Quiz for Ukraine Many thanks to all who supported our recent quiz raising monies for the Wessex Rotary District Ukraine appeal. Raffle prizes were generously donated by local businesses IVC, Nony Kerr-Smiley and JH Beauty Therapy and the well received supper came from Soles Butchers. Alresford Rotary continues to explore how it can best provide support for the Ukrainians including Homes for Ukraine. Christmas Shoeboxes! For many years local schools, individuals and organisations have kindly supported the Rotary Wessex Christmas shoebox scheme for disadvantaged children in eastern Europe and Asia and it is good to be able to provide some feedback. The boxes collected in the local area are taken by Alresford Rotary in early November to a central collection point in Bournemouth from where, in a good year with over 25,000 other boxes, they are sorted relating to gender and specific age ranges and taken by lorries to countries such as Montenegro, Moldova, Romania, Albania and the Philippines.

12

There they are distributed by local Rotary clubs to children up to the age of 15, many of whom may never previously have received a present. Last autumn throughout the Rotary Wessex District the number of boxes exceeded 18,500, an impressive number as we all continued to get used to living in a world with Covid, in addition there were 36 cartons of clothes, blankets and toys knitted or sewn through the year. The President of one of the recipient Rotary clubs in Montenegro wrote the following to the District co-ordinator Geoff Philpot: Dear Mr. Geoff, I hope this e-mail finds you well. I would like to wish you and your loved ones all the best in the New Year 2022. We would like to inform you that we have successfully delivered all the shoebox packages that you have sent to us. We delivered the packages to children in kindergartens, elementary schools, children with special needs, children in social care, children in Orphanages, to Red Cross of Montenegro, Rotary Clubs of Montenegro, etc. This year, the Ambassador of UK in

Montenegro, Mrs. Karen Medoks visited us, and she helped us hand over the shoebox packages to some of the children. Also, we were very honoured by her as she was our guest speaker that day at our regular Rotary meeting. This was the second time that she visited our club, the first time she visited us was in May 2021 when she first met with representatives of our Rotary Club. We would like to express our gratitude once more to you for all your help and support in making it possible even in these difficult times. All your packages brought so many smiles to children across Montenegro! Alresford Rotary is very grateful for the support the local community has given the shoebox scheme over the years and hopes it will continue and increase. Although the main publicity is launched to coincide with the start of the academic year and boxes need to be ready for collection by the end of October please do not feel compelled to wait until September to get involved! The scheme leaflet setting out the scheme rules (which must be followed principally to satisfy Customs requirements) will be available by the end of May. ut on a walk in the late Spring sunshine, dogs milling about at his feet, Himself sighed and muttered something that sounded a lot like “Fifty shades of grey.” A bit random, she thought as she stopped in her tracks. She didn’t know he’d read it, for one. Although, they’d been talking earlier about her next choice for Book Club – was it a suggestion...? “It’s an idea I suppose.” She concurred. Potentially not a very good one if she were honest. But Himself had apparently given it some thought, so she deliberated. “Well… I heard that charity shops had been inundated with copies, so I suppose it wouldn’t be expensive for everyone to buy. I’ll have to check – maybe Book Club have already read it… Do you think they’d like it?” she pondered. “Who’d like what, Darling?” He looked puzzled. “Book Club. Fifty Shades of Grey.” “Absolutely no idea. Best ask them. Look Darling, look at all those nifty little sheds. And all mellowed into that lovely silvery grey of weathered larch lap.” He sighed with longing and waved his hand expansively over the view of the allotments. Aah. Sheds, not shades - that made a lot more sense. Himself was particularly partial to a nice nifty shed. Of grey. The neatly tended allotment plots were a verdant patchwork, too. “And fifty shades of green,” she commented, less jealously than she might previously have done. Was a time during the first lockdown that she’d been obsessed with growing vegetables. Back then, when supermarket delivery slots were rather rarer than rocking horse droppings, a green-eyed monster might well have possessed her as she took in the view of the allotments. But back then she hadn’t been able to get her hands on tomato or runner bean plants for her pots until it was almost too late. Given the Government green light she’d finally, nervously, visited a garden centre. Buying the very last ones in stock, she’d felt epic excitement of spaniel proportions. Returning triumphantly to the car with her leggy, spindly, slightly sad specimens of gardener’s delight and scarlet emperor, she’d mentally pranced on all four paws, panted and wagged her tail. 2020 had also been the year she attempted to grow courgette seeds she’d rescued from her ratatouille. This was before she’d found out you could get poisoned from the resulting harvest. That was a narrow

14

squeak – saved from ‘toxic squash syndrome’ by an inability to get the seeds to germinate. Paradoxically, not being blessed with green fingers had, for once, been an advantage. But 2020 now seemed like a different century, a different planet. Back in the present, along from the allotments, they were strolling past gardens full of colour. She was reminded of spring 2021, which had delivered her a desperate need for flowers. Like a May dawn mist, her obsession with vegetables had evaporated, along with listening to the hourly news and wanting to go to the pub. The term ‘languishing’ was being bandied about and the somehow joyless, aimless feeling of ‘meh’ had taken hold. Flowers had been the answer; a vibrant, technicolour tonic. She’d packed her pots with pots of colour. “You know the human eye can differentiate between more shades of green than any other colour.” Himself stated, sounding uncharacteristically flat. Perhaps he had a point - looking a little closer, she noted that he was somewhat green around the gills. “You alright?” He shook his head sadly. “I suspect the culprit was that green salad. Maybe not washed properly, or the dressing was off…” Yeah right, she thought. Or maybe, just maybe, it had been something short-date he’d eaten. Perfectly fine when he’d fancied it in the reduced chiller cabinet, but days later when he’d got around to snaffling it? Not so much... Back at home, a glass of Andrews and a quiet sit down in the smallest library of the house sorted him out, however. As she looked at him, his habitually healthy complexion was miraculously restored. “You’re a marvel.” She announced. “Thank you Darling.” He said happily. Then thought about it. “Marvel, why?” “A momentary indisposition and there you are; green for ‘go’ again.” “Salad – definitely the salad.” Himself nodded as he opened the fridge door. “If you say so.” Either way she’d have been sick for a week from eating out-of-date whatever-it-was. She only had to look at an unwashed grape or an overripe cheese to feel queasy - but not him. As she watched him enthusiastically tuck into leftovers she’d earmarked for the dogs, that cast iron constitution of his made her green with envy.

Common lawn problems At this time of year, we begin to venture out into our gardens more often and become aware of how our lawns have coped over the winter months. We see plenty of lawn issues, lets take a look at what can be done. Compaction Healthy soil needs air spaces within it. Roots don’t grow in the soil; they grow in the gaps within. Gradually, over time, through regular use of your garden your lawn is likely to become compacted. Areas where your lawn is walked on more often are likely to show signs of poor grass growth and more often than not, this is due to the compaction below the surface. You’ll see this more often close to washing lines, the entrance to gates or where you have to walk over the lawn to access another area in your garden. It may be tempting to scatter grass seed on the surface, but unless the compaction issue is addressed, that new seed is going to struggle to establish as there is no space in the soil for its roots. Compromised root development means the grass has limited access to moisture and nutrition, meaning compromised grass growth. In addition, the roots are responsible for a gaseous exchange with the atmosphere, without which your grass will be less healthy and more susceptible to disease and pest issues. If you want a lawn to be proud of, deal with the compaction in your lawn. Aeration of the lawn, at least annually, should make up part of your lawn care plan. Dog Urine Burn Since Covid lock-down, there are many more lawn owners that are now also dog owners. That increase in dog ownership has seen an increase of dog related lawn damage. The most common of which is scorching, and bare patches caused by dog urine. Urine is high in nitrogen. Used correctly, nitrogen is an essential lawn nutrient and good for your grass. As anyone who has spilt lawn fertiliser on their grass will know, a concentration of nitrogen will kill grass. And this is what we are seeing with dog urine burns. The high concentration of nitrogen burns the grass and then the lower concentration around the edge creates a halo of lush growth – great for drawing attention to the unsightly burn! The best way to deal with this is prevention. If you can train your dog to pee elsewhere then that’s ideal. If not, try flushing the area with water after your pet has relieved itself. This isn’t always practical, and you may need to adopt strategies to repair these bare areas. Raking, spiking, and seeding is a good way forward.

18

Another great tip is to grow some small plant pots of soil and grass seed. When the burns appear, you can dig out the area, using an empty plant pot as a template and then pop the new grass in to fill the gap. Insect Damage

There are two main groups of insects that cause lawn issues – leather jackets and chafer grubs. Both live in the soil, both eat the grass plant, both cause major, unsightly damage. The pesticide used to control these insects has been withdrawn and therefore we are seeing increased numbers. Turf growers are struggling to supply pest-free turf and we see major problems in lawns that have been recently re-laid. To avoid this problem, if you are thinking of replacing your lawn, it’s far better to establish it from seed than to bring in new turf and possibly bring in lawn destroying insects too. Check with a lawncare professional if you suspect insect damage issues and they will be able to advise the best way forward. Lawn Treatments All living things need the right nutrition to remain healthy. Your lawn is no different. Without the correct seasonal nutrition, grass growth may be weak and the plants more susceptible to pests and diseases. In addition, regular weed and moss control will ensure your lawn looks its best all year long. Many lawn owners, who choose to apply their own lawn treatments, soon realise that shop-bought products are often not as effective as they would like. In addition, they tend to be expensive and don’t come in pack sizes to fit the size of your lawn – resulting in a shed full of part used boxes of ineffective products. It’s important not to under or over-dose a lawn, so the right applicator should be used, and that applicator should be calibrated too. Many people realise that the convenience and value offered by professional lawn treatments far outweighs shop bought alternatives and guarantees a beautiful lawn you can be proud of all year. Alresford Surgery News

ver the last couple of years, the Covid Pandemic has changed the way we provide General Practice care. It has been a very challenging time and we had to be responsive; moving quickly to ‘on the day’ service, providing the Covid vaccination program whilst also trying to maintain General Practice services with high staff sickness levels. Our clinical demand locally and nationally has now reached levels which are not sustainable in the current way General Practice is being offered. Nationally there are now 1,608 fewer fully qualified full time GPs compared to numbers in 2015 despite the promises of increased recruitment. As a result, each GP is looking after approximately 300 more patients. In January 2022 there was a total of 25.7 million appointments nationally, which is an increase of 0.5 million since January 2020. Our own consultations rates in Alresford have increased month on month despite the challenges of increased staff sickness and difficulties with recruitment. In March we offered 2925 appointments and this was an increase of 15% and 17% offered in February and January respectively. As we are now moving out of the pandemic and addressing the backlog, we recognise the need for the appointment system to change. We have listened to your feedback and recognise the importance of having access to pre-bookable appointments as life is returning to normal. We have responded to increasing demands by recruiting new members to the clinical team such as Helen Hall (Acute Nurse Practitioner) and Megan Power (Paramedic Practitioner) to help us deal with the emergency workload. We have in addition recruited Dr Hannah Harring as a new salaried GP and recently appointed two more GPs to the clinical team who are replacing retiring GPs in June. We now have access to musculoskeletal specialists via reception and several of the local opticians offer a Minor Eye Conditions service. Please be aware our staff have been trained and may appropriately direct you to an alternative service, which may be better suited to your problem thus ensuring you can access GP appointments when you really need them. Our new appointment system will provide a balance of on the day emergency care alongside pre-bookable appointments (up to 7 days in advance). We hope that this system will provide a better balance of appointments for the Alresford Population and preserve some of the continuity of care we have lost. In addition, we have boosted our access for those who are more vulnerable by having additional slots throughout the day for this group to access. There will be a range of methods for booking appointments including online, by telephone and through the e-consultation service via our website. We will return to offering direct access to either a telephone or face to face consultation. While we will continue to try our best to respond to increasing pressures and demand, please be kind to us and be reassured we are doing the best we can with what limited resources we have. It is vital that we

24

work together and you too play your part in helping your local surgery by only accessing us if you really need to. Below is the advice from NHS England (‘Use the right service’) to consider when addressing your healthcare needs. We have also included a helpful website to access if you are worried about your child’s health and are uncertain of which service to use. If you feel you would like to be more involved with the practice directly, please consider joining our patient participation group by contacting us at the surgery – admin. alresford@nhs.net https://usetherightservice.com/ “Use the Right service” https://what0-18.nhs.uk/ “Healthier Together” Bank holiday closures 2nd May, 2nd & 3rd June The surgery will be closed for the bank holiday weekend from 6.30pm Friday 29th April until 8am on Tuesday 3rd May then again from 6.30pm Wednesday 1st June until 8am on Monday 6th June. Changes to eConsult: Please be advised that we have taken the decision to only use e-Consult during the surgery’s opening hours (Monday-Friday 8am-6.30pm) After 6.30pm & over the weekends & bank holidays patients will still be able to access the ‘self help’ area but will be unable to submit requests using the service. NHS 111 Can help if you have an urgent medical problem when your GP practice is closed. Dial 111 on any phone for advice, or visit the NHS 111 website – 111.nhs.uk. Remember to call 999 at any time in a medical emergency. This is when someone is seriously ill, or injured, and their life is at risk. Dispensary service Over the summer months (From now until September) it is likely to take longer for prescriptions to be handled by our dispensary due to staffing levels. Therefore please ensure that you place your medication requests in plenty of good time. Please also remember that when attending the surgery, even if just to collect a prescription that you are required to wear a face mask unless you have a medical exemption, thank you. Welcome We offer a warm welcome to Dr. Charlotte Allberry who joins us from mid May on Tuesday- Friday mornings & to Dr. Samantha Powell who will be joining us from the beginning of June on Thursdays & Fridays. Alexander Technique in Alresford

re you moving as freely and effortlessly as you’d like? Is postural deterioration inevitable with age? Can youthful poise, balance and co-ordination be regained? We were all born with wonderfully functioning bodies, but nobody gave us the instruction manual! So during our lives we have pulled ourselves out of shape. Alexander Technique is a valuable education to show us how to return to ‘factory settings’ where our bodies once again work as they were designed. Through this, problems often drop away. As young children we could stand and walk with ease, sit comfortably for as long as we please without strain; our bodies a model of poise and perfect muscle tone. Sadly, the emotional and physical stresses of modern life accumulate and manifest in chronic muscle tension, distorting our movement patterns and well being. Our musculoskeletal system - our bones, muscles and soft tissue is a complex integrated system harmonised by appropriate tension and elasticity to maintain stability and strength, balance and coordination. Think very simplistically of a tent; poles, canvas and guy ropes, ineffective by themselves but tensioned together appropriately, the tent structure is strong, stable and able to withstand external forces. Unfortunately, when we start interfering with our own natural functioning with undue tension (over contracting some muscles and under using others) imbalances occur throughout, which has a major impact on the way we react, move and perform. Aches, pains and injury are also tell tale signs. Often we focus on individual body parts or muscles. Exercise is beneficial - muscle atrophy is to be avoided at all costs! - but it is important to recognise that our bodies are not made up of parts to make a whole, but they are a whole. Understanding how our whole body integrates and how we are affecting it, comes possibility to restore ourselves as nature intended. Fear, stress, thoughts, emotions, chaos, excess demands on strength and co-ordination are all enemies of how we use our bodies. We

28

fix, contract, compress and shorten in stature. Even furniture has an impact. The trouble is, much of our busy lives are carried out repetitively on autopilot, at a subconscious level. Repetitive movements becomes habitual and before long, these patterns feel normal and ‘right’. Worse still, if most of our reactions are subconscious how on earth do we know what to change and how? Alexander Technique works through thinking in activity; with initial help from a Alexander Technique teacher we learn awareness of our unwanted habits, to make change and from that, real choice as to how we react and move. Alexander Technique can be applied to help you do anything better and easier. Co-ordination and energy levels improve, movement becomes lighter, free, and more enjoyable. When our bodies and minds work together we learn to rebalance physically, as well as mentally and emotionally. With that comes greater self awareness, confidence and inner strength. Better functioning gives better performance; in your everday activities, business, education, sport, music and arts. Alexander Technique is a simple and practical method which is best learned by one-to-one lessons with a qualified teacher. Alexander Technique eventually becomes a self-help tool to regain control over our lives and problems, for a healthier and happier way of being. RECIPE OF THE MONTH

How to make easy Flatbread and Wild Garlic Pesto

Flatbread

This flatbread recipe is made with no yeast. It is very easy to make, requiring just a minute or two of kneading. And it honestly is beautifully soft and pliable. If you’ve never tried homemade bread before, this flatbread recipe is a great one to start with because it really is that easy. The worst that can happen with this flatbread recipe is that the heat is too high when you cook it so the exterior ends up too crunchy. If that happens, just spray it with olive oil or brush lightly with oil or butter and it will moisten the surface. Try this once, and store-bought flatbreads will never be the same again. That I can promise!

Ingredients

2 cups plain flour ½ teaspoon salt 50gms unsalted butter ¾ cup of milk

Method

1 Combine butter and milk and heat until butter is just melted – on stove or in microwave. Combine 2 cups flour, salt, the butter and milk in a bowl. 2 Sprinkle work surface with flour then knead for a few minutes until it is smooth – it doesn't need much kneading. Add extra flour if the dough is too sticky. 3 Wrap with cling wrap and rest at room temperature for 30 minutes or so. 4 Dust bench top with flour, cut dough into 6 pieces, roll into balls, then roll out into 20cm / 8" rounds, 2 – 3 mm thick. 5 Heat a non-stick pan over high heat (no oil). 6 Place one flatbread in the pan, cook for around 1- 1 1/2 minutes – it should puff up dramatically. Once the underside has nice golden patches on it, flip and cook the

30

other side for 45 seconds to 1 minute until the underside has golden spots and it puffs up again. Keep wrapped in tea towel: Stack the cooked bread and keep wrapped with a tea towel – the moisture helps soften the surface, making them even more pliable.

Wild Garlic Pesto

There is nothing to compare with this springtime treat, the leaves freshly picked in the Hampshire woods. It is best made using a good quality olive oil such as my friend Cosimo’s, Rignana single Estate Virgin oil, and delicious eaten with freshly made flatbreads. I prefer to use hazelnuts, more sustainable than the traditional pine nuts. A pestle and mortar or a food processor is required. Prep time 10 minutes.

Ingredients

100gms wild garlic 50gms grated Parmesan 50gms toasted blanched hazelnuts Virgin olive oil Lemon juice to taste Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

1 Wash the leaves and blitz in a food processor until thoroughly mashed up. 2 Add the grated Parmesan and blitz again 3 Add the hazelnuts and finally olive oil to the preferred consistency. 4 Add Salt, pepper and lemon juice to taste

COMMUNITY Church Aims to Raise The Roof

The members of Alresford Methodist Church are running a fundraising drive to pay for urgent repairs to their church roof in Jacklyns Lane. Works Left to right: Steve Walker, a past President of include the Alresford Rotary, Louis Ramsay Chair of the Alresford Pigs, Garry Venn of Venn & Son and replacement of Chris Wood from the Methodist Church. roof tiles on the church building, improvements to insulation and a new kitchen roof. Among the first organisations in the town to step up and support the church were the Alresford Pigs Association and The Rotary Club of Alresford who pledged £5,000 and £1,000 respectively to go towards the £33,000 needed to cover the building work being carried out by Venn and Son. Louis Ramsay, Chair Pig of the Alresford Pigs Association and Steve Walker a former President of Alresford Rotary, popped in to see how work was progressing before Easter. Said Louis “We are very happy to support a project which provides facilities for so many organisations in the town who will look forward to being able to use the church and hall again once the work is completed.” Steve Walker who is also a member of the church said “So many organisations like the Guides and Brownies, Lunch Club and the Historical and Literary Society have used the building on a regular basis but leaks have made life difficult for us all,” he said “and Rotary is very happy to support the Church in this way.” Chris Wood has been project managing the scheme on behalf of the church “You only see the front of the church hall from the road but the building is like a Tardis, with the church itself behind and the problems have occurred where the church was joined on to the original Methodist church hall,” he said, The Church needs to spend another £9,000 and now appeals to the local community to support them to not only complete this project but to also create a safe rear access to the church so that parents can drop off children safely away from Jacklyn's Lane. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ alresfordmethodistchurch

News from the doorsteps

The local Lib Dem team love getting out and about - asking about local issues tells us where work is needed: Here’s an extract of the most commonly raised issues on the doorstep this year; Highways & Footways Speeding, potholes and uneven pavements are most frequently mentioned – you’ve told us traffic speeds in villages, residential areas and the outskirts of Alresford are too high - our 20’s plenty campaign is very popular and for the outskirts 30mph instead of 40. Potholes are taking an age to be fixed, repairs are so poor they need redoing in short order. Please report all potholes at www.fixmystreet. com/ It’s simple, efficient, and gets the message to Highways at HCC - there’s a smartphone app too, where you can report other issues such as pavement problems & fly tipping too. Water quality living in an area of world famous chalk streams, it’s unsurprising many people are really concerned that Water Companies are still legally able to dump sewage in our rivers. Although sewage understandably takes the headlines, we are also really worried about the microplastics, phosphates, nitrates, antidepressants and hormones that are not currently removed from treated water - these also impact aquatic and human life and may have more serious consequences long term than the pathogens in sewage. We’d like to see the Government taking urgent action on this. On-street parking HCC are definitely taking over control of on-street parking in 2023. With this clarity we are calling for joined-up working between Parish, Hampshire and Winchester Councils to make Alresford parking work for everybody. We are actively campaigning for 1 hr free parking instead of the 20 minutes HCC are bringing in elsewhere. Join our campaign here www.winld.org.uk/1hr-free

The costs of heating and food These are of a grave concern. Recent government initiatives to help won’t scratch the surface. If you are finding these increased pressures difficult to manage, then the Citizens Advice 0808 278 7861 can assess what help you can access - making a claim opens up so many other doors. Council tax rebates to help with rising energy costs should have started to arrive for houses in Band A-D - other funds are available for those under financial pressure in other bands but you must apply. Access to the surgery Many raised difficulties getting appointments. Basically, the NHS is under immense pressure across the board and our local surgery is no different. At the time of writing Covid is still prevalent, with surgeries still required to use remote appointments wherever possible. In addition, nurses, doctors and admin staff are isolating at no, or short, notice making it impossible to provide a normal service. Please bear with our hardworking NHS staff. Trees Trees are brilliant for climate change but a mixed blessing for those who live close or under large specimens. Many town trees are nearing the end of their life - replacements will be more appropriate species, and some action is planned where pavements have been made impassable. Unless a tree has a TPO property owners are free to cut back to their boundary. Building work at Sun Lane. There are omissions and a lack of clarity in the Construction Management Plan - we are working with officers to agree a plan that protects residents from undue nuisance. Recycling and the Tip More recycling is wanted and frustration at the tip continues. Jackie has written to HCC about a number of issues and it looks like HCC will have to stop charging for domestic rubble and DIY waste. Our campaign for on the day booking has been successful, but not yet in Alresford. It’s worth saying that despite all these niggles, the overwhelming feeling is one of pride, in our community in the town and the villages. Most wouldn’t swap living here for anywhere else, recognising how immensely fortunate we are to live here, but we know there is always work that can be done to make people's lives better!

COMMUNITY Winchester District Citizens Advice

Jubilee Picnic in the Park

Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District gives advice on dealing with the cost of living crisis. I am a single parent, with two young children. I am already struggling to stay on top of my household bills; my weekly food shop isn’t stretching as far anymore and now my energy bill is going up too. I don’t know how I’m going to afford all of these price rises. What can I do to stop my finances spiralling out of control? First of all, you are not alone in this and there’s support to help you. It’s always worth checking if there are benefits you don’t know about that you’re eligible for, including support with your energy costs and living costs. On the Citizens Advice website there’s a benefits calculator, advice on how to reduce living costs and information on other ways to increase your income.

Everyone is invited to share in the celebrations of the Queens Jubilee and to bring along a picnic to Arlebury Park. Community groups will be there with activities, there will be competitions and music along with a big screen showing all the events in London, including the Platinum concert from Buckingham Palace. The car park at Arlebury Park will be closed for the day apart from disabled parking and drop-offs, and we are encouraging everyone to come on foot or

Age Concern Hampshire Worried about memory loss?

There’s also emergency support that you may have access to, such as food bank vouchers or fuel vouchers. You could contact your local council to see if they could also offer support. If you’re struggling to stay on top of bills, it’s really important to understand what money you have coming in and going out each month. Citizens Advice has a budgeting tool on its website that can help with this. And if you’re already behind on bills, prioritise paying your rent or mortgage, plus energy bills and Council Tax first. Not paying these bills has the most serious consequences. You should speak to the person or company you owe money to, to see if they can help you repay your bills sustainably. We know that times are incredibly tough but please remember, you don’t have to face this alone, do contact your local Citizens Advice to help you find a way forward. If you’d like to speak to a local adviser at Citizens Advice Winchester District, you can call us for free on 0808 278 7861 or visit www.citizensadvicewinchester.org.uk

actors / musicians around and designed to make you laugh out loud… and make you think. The new show is called ‘Gods and Dogs’. This new hilarious dystopian allegory is set in 2084 on the fictitious island of Abatina in a world where people are either glamorous celebrities or slobbering dog-like followers of them gripped to their telepafones – with the exception of the Nevnops (Not Very Nice People) as the President, Big Al, calls them. The story follows Tina who enters ‘Marriage Maker’, a ‘telepavision’ gameshow. The idea of the game is if you win you get to marry the super-glamorous footballer, Harry Best, on the Saturday, have a weekend of love, then divorce him on the Monday. ‘All the fun & no ties!’ as the compere, Rich Nobb, puts it. Unfortunately, Tina makes the mistake of falling in love when she wins & doesn’t want to divorce. Doreen, her best friend, has her own opinion, but then she might be a Nevnop & the Mind Police might get to her first & send her to the wolves on the ‘Other Side’ - a dangerous world over ‘the mountain’ where the inhabitants of Abatina, according to Big Al, must not go, with dangerous free-thinkers & wolves that might get them.

The Rudes are touring again this summer with a great new show and will be visiting East Hampshire again - their twenty-fourth annual visit to some villages! You won’t want to miss their brand of high tempo, physical theatre performed by some of the best

ENTERTAINMENT Sun Lane, and there on the right, looking like the front lawn of a stately home, is a magnificent 4 rink bowling green and clubhouse, peopled by knowledgeable and friendly locals eager to guide you gently into the wonderful world of Lawn Bowls!

The Joy of Bowling!

Ah, Spring! Season of promise and joy to come! When at last the good gentlefolk of Alresford, venturing out after the cruel Winter and Covid hibernation, can enjoy their first game of….. Bowls! What – is there a Bowling Green in Alresford?? Yes – didn’t you know, just a short stroll up

What pastime can compete with an afternoon of friendly competition, out there enjoying fresh air and sunshine, while trying your skill at rolling a large ball in an attempt to reach and touch a distant smaller one – what could be simpler? Yet you will find it is not so easy, with the vagaries of what appears at first glance to be a perfectly flat green, and the tendency of the bowl to turn in a gentle curve as it slows, the ‘bias’ causing a frustratingly unpredictable change in direction just when you thought you had the measure of it!

Never mind, Alresford Bowling Club will offer guidance, free use of club bowls, and friendly advice as you learn to master this most gentle of outdoor sports. At least two free visits are available to newcomers of all ages, our only request being that you wear flat soled shoes, with no heel which could damage the green. Bowls is a naturally socially-distanced, non-contact activity and plays a key role in the mental and physical health of many across the country. Please see our advert and photograph in the Forum, for our times of play. Contact secretary Barry Morgan on 01962 733477, or alresfordbowls@gmail.com, and start your next adventure!

Alresford Bowling Club

We are a friendly bowling club, situated in Sun Lane, close to the centre of Alresford. During the bowling season (roughly late April to September) we play many friendly matches against local clubs, have a number of internal competitions and knock-out tournaments, and regular roll-up sessions. Roll-ups are opportunities to meet, play and socialise with other members, and take place on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 10.00am to 12.00 noon, and Thursday evenings 6.00pm to 8.00pm (with a social element). Visitors are welcome at roll-ups, and at other times when accompanied by a Member. You can try out bowls of various sizes and can take advantage of 2 trial sessions before you decide if the game of bowls is for you. Lawn bowls is a great game, not just for the retired but for adults of all ages, so come along to Sun Lane and have a go. Further information from Barry Morgan (Club Secretary) 01962 733477; and on the club website.

PROFESSIONAL Mr Mac - Support for Apple & Windows This month - The latest iPhone SE, a very good Screen bar light and a portable Apple Watch charger. Introduced in March the new iPhone SE, 4.7", starting price £419, has had some excellent reviews. It packs a lot of punch for a small phone. Many people like this form factor that slips easily into almost any pocket or handbag and will not be disappointed with the 2022 model. It has a 12 megapixel camera, up to 15 hours battery life and is fully 5G compatible. If you have an older model 6 or 7 and are looking to update it without needing to buy the very latest model this is a great choice. I am always available should you need any help setting up any new iPhone that you might choose. Remember that if you purchase any Apple product from John Lewis you will receive 2 years warranty, one year more than Apple give you. I have been looking for a suitable light to use with my iMac for quite a while now and recently saw one that fits on the top of any flat screen monitor made by BenQ, called the Screen Bar Monitor Light LED Light Bar, that costs £89 from Amazon. It fits neatly on the top of your monitor with a counter balance weight and takes power from a USB port. I love my Apple Watch but I become very frustrated if I forget to charge it overnight and it then runs out of juice. Now, for less than £10, it is possible to buy a portable charger that plugs into any USB that lets you charge it on the go. A great travel companion. Search for Newdery USB charger for Apple Watch. good Festival 2022 Good Festival (formerly Hampshire Country & Garden Festival) is a fun-filled day for all of the family hosted by the Hampshire Medical Fund. Set amongst the beautiful gardens of Bere Mill on the River Test in Whitchurch, the festival returns this year on Sunday 26th June.

tents and enjoy a day of wholesome good simple fun for all the family. The festival combines exciting interactive attractions and experiences with a feel-good atmosphere. The children’s area will be jam-packed with exciting activities. Children’s entertainers Sharky & George return with their imaginative and energetic games to ensure that the festival is full of bubbles, laughter and happy faces. There will be bushcraft, bubble football, laser fun, circus skills, storytelling, face painting, theatre fun and festival flower headdresses, to name a few! This year there will be a new area for the Under 5’s to keep the littlest festivalgoers entertained.

‘The Three Cockerels’ mobile bar will provide award-winning drinks from local breweries and distilleries across the South Downs.

Every penny from the festival goes towards the purchase of pioneering medical equipment for Basingstoke, Andover and Winchester NHS hospitals. This year, the Hampshire Medical Fund has a very special fund-raising target of £200,000 for the procurement of a state of the art AI (artificial intelligence) machine for interventional radiology. This machine allows minimally invasive, image guided procedures to target tumours in the lungs, kidneys & liver. There are only two of these machines in the entire United Kingdom, which makes it cutting edge technology in cancer treatment for The Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The festival launches on Saturday 25th June with an evening of sparkling wine, cocktails and canapés set against the backdrop of Bere Mill gardens. This will be followed by supper, a silent auction and a fast auction finale, accompanied by musical duo, The Canapés, on the guitar and violin. On Sunday, the doors open at 9.30am. Visitors are invited to step among the colourful festival

Infectious funky grooves from the exciting musical brass band, Tuba Libres will have you dancing around the hay bales. Also new for this year, The Good Living Tent, celebrates all aspects of well-being with local experts and practitioners. Have you ever tried aerial silks or wanted to have a go at surfing but not quite made it to the waves? Visitors can experience some of life’s simple outdoor pleasures. For the fishing enthusiasts, ‘Famous Fishing’ will be on the banks of the River Test with fly fishing casting tuition, guidance on fly types, and the opportunity to learn how to tie a fly. For shoppers, there will be local artisans, delicious local food and drink producers and an array of plant stalls to help fill your garden with summer colour. The festival venue, Bere Mill, leads the line-up of food providers with a barbeque feast sourced from the green pastures all around. The mouth-watering selection will include vegan delights, a hog roast, crêpes, ice-cream, locally roasted coffee and handmade cakes. Make sure you come hungry and thirsty!

Last but not least, enter your canine friends in the popular family fun dog show. In the Good Paws tent, our four legged friends will be in with the chance to win: Dog Most like its Owner, Most Handsome Dog, Waggiest Tail and Dog with the Most Character. Water bowls and doggy waste bins are provided throughout the site.

COMMUNITY

New Alresford Town Council

Thank you to all the local school children school who gave their time to come and plant daffodils and crocuses. You can now see the fruits of your labour.

This scheme was back for its seventh year and The Alresford Litter Pick took place on 26th March. Over sixty individual residents came together to clear most areas of litter throughout the town, showing an enthusiastic sense of pride and community spirit. Some most unusual litter and objects were found! The council wants to thank Idverde, for supplying the litter picks and for the generosity of the Arlebury café who offered hot & cold drinks to all involved. The council also wants to thank Rotary who conducted a major clean-up of Broad Street including the gutters and cleared all litter.

Unfortunately, we have recently received complaints of unruly dogs in our parks. If your dog falls into this category, please ensure they stay on a lead.

Sun Hill Recreation Ground

Younger children will be pleased to learn that the council has ordered a brand-new train in the play area. It will be installed on 12th May.

A Neighbourhood Plan Engagement Day In March, Council approved the Terms of Reference for the Neighbourhood Advisory Group. The Neighbourhood Advisory Group will consist of three councillors with the remainder being made up of residents of the town. This was an opportunity for all New Alresford residents to drop in and have their say in developing a shared vision for New Alresford, the event was led by planning consultants Troy Planning & Design who are advising NATC and the Neighbourhood Advisory Group. This is for the benefit of the community, and we want to thank all those who joined in and gave opinions on their future vision of New Alresford. Please follow the website for updates and the latest news

Dogs in Recreation Grounds

What is obedient dog behaviour in open spaces? Good behaviour in the Recreation Grounds is a matter of being able to control the dog by teaching simple commands such as "Come", "Look", and "Down". We hope that people will show responsible dog ownership while walking in the parks and open spaces. These spaces are for all to enjoy, young, old and dog walkers especially as Springtime has arrived encouraging more visitors to the open spaces.

The council have commenced negotiations with the Town Trust with regards to accessing the Rugby Fields via The Avenue. Until the negotiations have concluded the Town Trust has requested that no access to the Rugby Fields is made via The Avenue. NATC apologise for any inconvenience caused and is working to resolve the matter as soon as possible. The Rugby Fields can be accessed from alternative entrances to Arlebury Park.

Great British Spring Clean-Keep Britain Tidy

The council lengthsman has also conducted a huge tidy up around the entire parish, including footpath clearance and hedge cutting. In addition, he also cleared the town centre of weeds. This is a good starting point at the beginning of the growing season to keep it up so please keep the curtilage in front of your shop or house clear of weed or litter. If you see any overgrowth or problems on the town footpaths, we would like to hear from you. Either telephone the Town Council office 01962 732079 or email committeeclerk@newalresfordtc.gov.uk

Look out for new events in and around Alresford this Spring kicking off with the long-awaited return of the famous Watercress Festival on Sunday 15th May.

Taking a Fresh Look at Alresford’s History Alresford Cover_Layout 1 05/04/2022 9:59pm Page 4

ew Alresford is 800 years old. There are reminders of its long history all around the town – ranging from the great medieval Pond to the Victorian fire station in Broad Street (now housing a museum) to a plaque on the house close by which served as the American army’s local HQ during the Second World War. Brief histories and pocket guides record the key events in the town’s history and a host of specialist articles discuss specific topics. What seems to have been lacking is a comprehensive overview which takes a fresh look at what is already known and brings the bare facts to life. With this in mind the Alresford Historical and Literary Society commissioned the new full-length history of Alresford now available from the society and local booksellers. As its title, Alresford Through Time, suggests the book traces Alresford’s history through the centuries from its foundation by Bishop de Lucy up to the present day.

A H L S

This handsomely illustrated book explores the eight centuries of Alresford’s history from its creation in about 1200 to the present day. It provides fresh insights into the foundation of the town, the creation of the great Pond, the Battle of Cheriton, the devastating fire of 1689, the billeting of hundreds of French prisoners in the town, the ‘Swing’ riots of 1830, the railway, the hazards of two world wars, the development of the Watercress Line and the town’s growing tourist appeal.

With a host of fascinating and colourful pictures, including archive photos of the town and images of celebrated events such as the Watercress Festival and the Watercress Line’s ‘Light Train’, this is a rich source of information about Alresford and an ideal browsing book.

a ne w history edited by brian tippett

The book recalls local figures as diverse as Dr Henry Perin, founder of the School, Peter Heylyn, the Royalist Rector ejected from his parish, Mary Russell Mitford, John Arlott and the Tichborne Claimant.

It gives an impression of what everyday life was like in each period and how the town has changed through the centuries as a market town, a highway town, an administrative hub, a local shopping centre and as an increasingly desirable place of residence. Alresford was originally built to a plan and has been reshaped by modern planning policies, growing in size to a population of over 5,000.

Alresford Pond c.1830, by G F Sargent

There proved to be much that deserved reconsideration. The great Pond pre-dates almost everything in Alresford and a cherished notion is that it was created as part of an elaborate canal system linking Alresford with Winchester with boats plying regularly between the two towns. Strange then that the remarkably detailed documentary records of the period contain not even the smallest hint of such activity. Wasn’t it intended primarily as a fish pond for the once important but now almost forgotten bishop’s palace at Bishop’s Sutton — an essential food-source for many medieval monasteries and palaces? And how was it that Henry Perin, an

58

alresford through time

N

Brian Tippett introduces Alresford Through Time, his new history of Alresford obscure country doctor, amassed the wealth to fund the creation of a new school? It turns out that he was a thr ough time major manufacturer for the a ne w history Royal Navy, who enlarged edited by brian tippet t his business by marrying the widow of another supplier and became a major property owner and mayor in Portsmouth. For many years the Methodist and the Congregational churches played a vital part in the religious and social life of what, one might assume, was a very peaceable community. It comes a surprise therefore to discover that when they first arrived in Alresford their preachers were pursued by a mob and brickbats were thrown through the windows of the chapel in Pound Hill.

alresford

All towns like to remember celebrated visitors. It is said that Oliver Cromwell stayed at the Swan but it is strange that the passage of two kings through the town has been entirely forgotten. Crowds gathered when Charles I passed through Alresford as he was escorted from Winchester to Windsor and thence to his trial and execution, and Alresford’s cricketers ran alongside George III’s and Queen Charlotte’s coach when, cheered by townsfolk, they travelled through Alresford to review troops in Winchester. A veil of secrecy covered the Prime Minister’s movements in the Second World War but in his diary one of the American GIs stationed in Alresford in 1944 gave an eye-witness account of Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower being driven down the Avenue in an open-back car. In its general appearance Alresford seems to remain unchanged by the passage of time. But what is brought home most powerfully when one traces the town’s development through the centuries is that change is of the very essence of Alresford’s history. The flocks of sheep that once made Alresford’s streets impassable during the sheep fairs have long gone and Alresford is no longer the selfsufficient rural centre that it was when the district council, the magistrates’ court and the district workhouse were located here. Superstores in neighbouring towns have taken their toll upon the retail trade but vibrant new shops have sprung up as, with the everincreasing success of the Watercress Line and a greatly increased population, Alresford has drawn in more and more visitors while retaining its reputation as a particularly pleasant place to live.

COMMUNITY Blue Bonnets Over The Border On a damp, grey, cloudy morning on Monday 4th April 2022 some 200 people gathered by the South Downs Way near Warnford in Hampshire. Their purpose was to witness the dedication of a new memorial to 33 soldiers and airmen killed during the crash of a Stirling bomber and the Horsa glider it was towing on 4th April 1944 during preparations for D Day – Exercise DREME. Their average age was about 25 years. Masterfully organised by The Reverend Tony Forrest RAFVR (Retd), the Rector of the Meon Bridge Benefice, and Major (Retd) Will Pike of the Parachute Regiment, the service was a moving and uplifting occasion. Those attending included Flick Drummond MP for the Meon Valley, local dignitaries, personnel from the Royal Navy, Army and RAF (serving and retired), the headteacher and children from Droxford Junior School, local people and a few dogs. The Royal British Legion Droxford & District Branch paraded their standard and a wreath was laid by the Chairman, Captain Anthony McEwen RN. Prominent among the retired servicemen present were those wearing the distinctive glengarry of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB) in whose proud regiment 24 of the young soldiers who perished had served in 3 Platoon, ‘A’ Company of the 7th (Airborne) Battalion. Throughout the service and exhortation, and especially during a haunting lament played by former KOSB Pipe Major, Lt Col Ewan

Tartuffe: A play that is funny, silly, rude and good for the soul Tartuffe is a hilarious comedy and a modern adaptation of Molière’s 17th century play of politics and manners. Adapted by Stuart Hibbard, Titchfield Festival Theatre’s Director of Education & Learning, the play is a story principally about two characters: ambitious politician Charles Ogden and his political advisor and life guru, mystic Tartuffe. Charles Ogden is hot property in the political game, born into a wealthy family with generations of service in Parliament. Charlie has bigger plans; he wants the top job. To help him open the door to Number 10 he has engaged a baseball capped, fitness fanatic as his political advisor - Tartuffe. Can this life coach be trusted, or will Ogden lose everything including his family, his name and his chance of political success?

Stuart, there was time to reflect on the tragic events of 78 years ago. The ground to the southeast rises towards Old Winchester Hill near where it is thought the Stirling had hit a tree, at night and in low cloud. To the northwest, lies Warnford Park where the released Horsa glider crashed, killing all 27 onboard; apart from the KOSB men, these included 2 pilots from the Glider Pilot Regiment and a soldier from the Royal Army Medical Corps. The badly damaged Stirling eventually crashed near Romsey, killing all 6 Royal Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force crew. All units involved were represented at the dedication - the glider pilots by the Army Air Corps - and wreaths were laid. The service concluded with the KOSB quick march “Blue Bonnets over the Border” and a flypast by a C130 Hercules from 47 Squadron RAF. To view the memorial, follow the South Downs Way from Exton to Old Winchester Hill, about a mile from The Shoe Inn at Exton. The grid reference is 630213. Cdr Rob Scott RN

Stuart Hibbard has adapted Molière’s classic comedy for a modern audience and is directing Tartuffe. Stuart said, “Molière was renowned for writing his societal farces, poking fun at power; the church; at social norms. He lived as he wrote – dangerously, relishing scandalising authority figures. I especially like the way Molière ridicules authority and conformity. Undoubtedly, his satire was ahead of his time. “Tartuffe is a play about buffoons and egos so where better to set it than the Palace of Westminster? It is not based on anyone person or political party; rather it resonates with the need to be popular and seen to be listening to popular people is at the heart of it. Tartuffe is great fun. It’s silly. It’s rude. It’s over the top. It’s a tonic and it’s good for the soul.” Titchfield Festival Theatre’s production of Tartuffe opens at the Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane on Monday 9th May until Saturday 14th May 2022. The shows start at 7.30pm. There is a matinée performance on Saturday 14th May 2022 starting at 2.30pm. Marriage entre la Terre et la Mer: An Exhibition by Sylviane Thomas Sylviane is an artist living in the local area. In French her name means “from the forest”. Her mother chose her name well as she loves the forest. But Sylviane also has a deep connection to the sea. This has grown through her marriage to a marine biologist who has opened her eyes to it. Which explains why she is drawn by these two elements and why she craves to paint them. This exhibition includes several works on forests, seascapes and animals. Sylviane’s works have been created using oils and pastels. till 15 May (café area) FREE U3A ( University of the Third Age) DSLR

Council will be taking over the parking management in 2023 from Winchester City Council. There won’t be any changes made without consultation first, after our chair raised the question. After 2 attempts by Winchester City Council in the last 4 years to try and bring in parking meters, we have good data on how businesses and residents feel. This will be raised; we continue to monitor and will lobby for the best interest of the businesses.

This fully illustrated talk will examine different types of lighting available during the Regency period, how they were made, what they reflect about social class and what changes took place during JA's life.
