Bespoke sizing - Media walls, boot rooms, custom offices, installed by ex shipwright joiners with exceptional attention to detail 4

Bespoke Kitchens & Furniture

Happy Kitchens have a unique approach when it comes to kitchens and custom spaces in the home. We use excellent quality materials which are fitted by exshipwright joiners, who used to fit the woodwork on Super Yachts. That in itself is unique in our industry but then add in the fact that we are bespoke, but don’t charge the inflated prices that your highend high street showrooms do, gives us the recipe for your perfect home solution. This is why we are one of the highest rated home improvement companies on HOUZZ, beating all the top names you might recognise when walking down your high street. We have never had less than a 5star review and have won the HOUZZ best of service award every year since it has been running. The staff at HOUZZ reference us to other companies as to how customer service should be done. Many of our customers have used us 2 or 3 times due to moving house or tackling other projects in their existing houses. We do not have a template for design and take a fresh approach with every customer. It is important to take all the best ideas a customer has, then bring in the experience we have to offer, and often our ideas will be completely different to any other companies as we are innovative and bespoke. We often hear that customers have had designs and quotes that all look the same, are boring and un-exciting, yet expensive. This is because most high street ‘kitchen designers’ are just salespeople with no idea on how a kitchen works.

The biggest compliment we get from our customers is always around our attention to detail and often bringing something completely different to the table. If you are still unsure after reading this, go and read some of our reviews on our Happy Kitchens Houzz profile, and do a search of kitchen companies on there by review rating, we are always close to the top of the Out-of-the-boxlist. thinking, bespoke design features, and friendly staff with excellent attention to detail are just a few of the reasons you should call us today. If that isn’t enough please do remember that the design visit is free of charge, so you have nothing to lose.

Our customers will often use us again, and recommend us to Family and Friends. The quote from the review above was from a customer who has chosen us twice, and their parents also have a Happy Kitchen, and two of the parents' friends.

Anna and Hugh Cutler, May 22

So whether you need an amazing Kitchen, Utility, Bedroom, coffee bar with custom pod storage, Office, Media wall or Living Room storage we can help. The design visits are free of charge, and we can quote on the same day. Also Ben loves design, so often at no extra charge, he will help you choose paint colours, light fittings, Bar stools, artwork and can even recommend great pots and pans. companies on Houzz, offering free home design visits

The value of properties in the same street can differ hugely and can be affected by the popularity of an area, schooling, accessibility to infrastructures, countryside or coast and, of course, supply and economy. Portal valuations, whilst popular, don’t consider these influencing factors nor any works or money spent on improvements; they are based on percentage calculations and can be wildly inaccurate. An experienced property professional will be tuned in to the local market, will be aware of both buyer’s expectations and comparable properties sold (not just marketed) and will therefore be able arrive at a realistic value for your property.

Whilst events in the world and the economy control turnover and turnover affects prices, it is personal circumstance which creates the desire or need move on. The right time to move is always when the time is right for you and likely if you wait for global events to stabilise you could be waiting a long time. If your circumstances dictate a change, don’t delay. We can help. Our advice is free. 01962

“Um… Can’t we have prawn sandwiches and pork pies, Darling? And crisps. And maybe those nice chocolate puddings from M&S?

The sun shone. Relentlessly. No dire portents of storms darkened the weather forecast for days to come. No rain at ConfusionWimbledon.setin.Was this summer? Was this even England? Was this…. and the notion arose in the minds of those over a certain age… 1976? After all, ABBA and the hosepipe ban were back.. No. For one, in 1976, as far as she remembered, there was a general feeling of joy that you could reliably plan something outside. And relief from parents that it wasn’t raining during the holidays. But in 2022 she was determined that they would enjoy the weather despite the grim warnings; they would be careful. Gone were the lazy, hazy, crazy days of her youth when she’d lie in the sun under, presumably, a fully functioning ozone layer, wearing nothing but baby oil. The very thought made her shudder and apologise to her poor abused skin. Yes, she decided – they would partake (somewhere in the shade, wearing factor 30) of that great British tradition – the picnic. Or even that great French tradition - Le Picnic – if baguettes were Overinvolved.the years picnics had featured with reliable regularity. Some had been weird; the brie and broccoli sandwiches – soggy, bland, smelling sort of farty. Others had been wonderful; Greek meze and a bottle of red on an Ionian beach. Picnics could be good, bad and downright waspy. One wet August bank holiday, trying to impress a new boyfriend on a first date, she’d bought M&S everything. No matter the weather was disappointing, she’d thought, the food would compensate. They’d arrived in the New Forest only to find that the cold bag with the cool drinks, prawn sandwiches, the pork pies and the fancy chocolate puddings, had somehow been left behind amidst the splashy mad dash through the torrential rain to the car. Sat in a layby with just napkins, condiments and crisps, watching a sodden New Forest pony empty its bowels, had been a bit of a low point. A glum “home?” followed by a glummer “why not.” Funny, she couldn’t recall a second date.. The memory of following a family on a long trek along the banks of the Thames loomed large as well. Everyone including the children had trudged, weighed down with bags, baskets and insulated boxes. As they unpacked, the mystery was revealed; multiple china plates, bowls, glasses and bottles. As, sat nearby, she had enjoyed a lunch-less excursion with Himself, he commented, “they’ve forgotten something.”

Enviously, she’d watched the family dishing up an elegant feast of prawns, cold chicken, hot new potatoes, salad and chilled white wine, followed by an elaborate roulade - and cheeseboard eaten from more china crockery. Cups of tea appeared, made with water boiled on a primus and poured from a tea pot. Unable to imagine any omissions she asked, hungrily, “forgotten what?” Himself had laid back comfortably on the grass and said “The servants. All that prepping and lugging’s no picnic.”

The last thing I want to be doing is sitting hunched over on a blanket chasing salad around…” Himself murmured. Well, there was that. With their local town’s M&S sadly the subject of recent closures, she planned a drive-by shop for sandwiches, pies and puddings at a Marks’ service station en-route to the forest. Mentally she gave herself a knowing look and shrewd tap on the nose; can’t leave the picnic behind if you buy it on the way.. A road closure and diversion put paid to that. A change in the weather and some very un-1976 un-scheduled rain put a dampener on things too. Fate had determined there would be no picnic. There was, however, a quick purchase at the village shop on the way Himselfhome.. munched happily on the knobbly chocolate bar. “Delicious. No prep, no lugging, it’s not bland or soggy. Do you know,“ he peered at the attractive purple, red and white wrapper, “I think this might be my favourite Picnic®!”

No Picnic

The group ate their lunch, hunched uncomfortably over on blankets, chasing slippery tomatoes and potatoes around their plates with knives and forks. When they left, it had to be said that rarely had a picnic, in the history of picnics, looked as heavy on the long walk back to the car as it had on the way out.

Recalling these experiences – with not ‘overly elaborate’, ‘heavy’, ‘bland’, ‘soggy’ or ‘smelly’ uppermost in her mind, she consulted Himself. “I’m thinking colourful, tasty poke bowls of salmon, carrot, avocado, edamame, brown rice and sriracha mayo.” Her daughter, living in stylish Brisbane would, no doubt, approve.

Jackie’s County Corner for I hope you have enjoyed the summer months despite the very hot weather. The imposition of water restrictions by Southern Water bring worries about the security of our water supply to the fore. RAPID is the Regulators’ Alliance for Progressing Infrastructure Development. As part of this programme, Southern Water is developing a scheme to supplement the aquifer water they already extract for our use. You can see more online at www.southernwater.co.uk , search ‘Water for life’. Southern Water is proposing to treat our wastewater as usual, but instead of pumping the treated sewage out to sea as it does now, it will be added to the reservoir at Havant Thicket, and that water will be returned to Otterbourne to be cleaned again and processed for drinking water. Southern Water is seeking views on the principles of this from the public this summer- and I’d be interested to hear your views too. Every year a National Highways Transport Survey is carried out to assess the public view of highways across the country. You often make your views known to me- this is your chance to take part! Experience of several applications in my division shows me that we all want to recycle, but not near our homes. These sites are often large, and although business rates make it cheaper to work from rural sites, we must find economic ways for these much needed businesses to be sited on business parks and industrial estates; not in our countryside. Let me know what you think too. Thank you Cllr Jackie Porter, text/tel: 07973 696 085, more detail on these links on www. jackieporter.co.uk

Now is the perfect time to renovate a lawn. It’s labour intensive but the results will give you a garden you can be proud of. We are happy to help if you don’t fancy taking on the task yourself.

Let’s take a look at what can be done now to improve the situation.

Lawns have suffered terribly due to extreme heat and drought stress. When soil moisture levels drop too far, many lawn grasses simply will not recover.

Thatch is the place where pathogens such as red-thread and fusarium patch will establish themselves, causing issues with fungal attack. Scarifying or power-raking the surface of the lawn will remove this build-up efficiently.

How to Recover a Drought Damaged

6. Remove dead organic matter

1. Assess the lawn fully Take an objective survey of your lawn. Does it have plenty of weed grasses – those with broader leaves or flat growth habits? Does it have difficult to control lawn weeds, such as yarrow, self-heal or speedwell?. Now is the time to think about a total-kill of all lawn vegetation so you can start the make-over with a clean canvas. Is your lawn uneven? Does the lawn have dips and hollows that you want to address before you begin other work?

Once you have started the renovation of your lawn, and the new seed has germinated, it’s going to be more challenging to irradicate any undesirable grass types. Assuming your lawn doesn’t need a total kill, the time to deal with these issues is before the new seed is sown. Broad spectrum herbicides can be applied before the renovation work, to kill any undesirable grasses.

It’s often not obvious that you have a problem with chafer grubs or leather jackets until a drought stressed lawn fails to recover when the rain returns. It is worth digging some sample holes around the lawn to assess the situation in the soil and check what pests may be present. If found, they need to be dealt with through biological control.

An application of compost-based top-dressing will boost soil microbial activity and help support your new lawn. It will also create the perfect seed bed for your newly sown seed.

9. Drag matt After top-dressing it’s a good idea to use a drag matt on the surface of the lawn. This will knock the dressing off the high points and into the hollows, giving you a more even finish to your lawn renovation.

2. Irradicate weed grasses

7. Select the Right Seed Mix Plant breeders are continually developing grass varieties that are quicker to germinate, greener, deeper rooted, more drought or shade tolerant, disease resistant and more hard-wearing. By selecting the right seed blend for your soil type, lawn position and how you want to use your garden, you will have a better-looking lawn that can cope with how you use it. Seed can be direct drilled into the soil or broadcast on the surface.

5. Relive compaction Roots grow in the air gaps within the soil. Fewer air spaces mean less root density. Roots are essential for access to nutrition and moisture, to relieve stress and help the grass resist pest and disease attack. Using a specialist lawn aerator to create space within the soil ensures healthy root development for your grass plants.

13. Weed control New weeds in a new lawn are inevitable. Dormant weed seeds will be activated by the mechanical processes used when renovating a lawn. In addition, new seeds will arrive on the wind or with birds visiting the garden and pooping them out. The perfect conditions created for the new grass seeds are perfect for weed seeds too. Once the new lawn has established well enough a treatment program for weed control can begin.

8. Top dress

3. Deal with weeds Grass plants can withstand the application of specialist plant control products but to do so they need to have reached a certain stage of growth. Application of selective weed control before that point will kill the young grass, along with the targeted weed. Therefore, deal with any weeds before the renovation begins by applying the right plant control product for the target species. As mentioned above, some lawn weeds can be more challenging to control, so deal with those first.

4. Check for grass eating grubs

10. Wetting agent Used effectively in the golf industry, this technology is relatively new in lawncare. By breaking down the surface tension of water molecules, the wetting agent aids absorption into the soil and helps to reduce the time it takes for water to drain through the root-zone. This makes water work harder and reduces the amount that needs to be applied.

12. Water All living things need water. Once your lawn renovation is completed its important not to let seeds or young grass plants dry out, until their roots are deep enough to find moisture.

The build-up of dead, organic matter on the surface of the lawn can have a serious impact on the amount of moisture and nutrition reaching the root-zone. During times of drought the grass leaf dies, laying on the surface of the soil and can result in issues with lawn thatch.

11. ApplyingNutritionthe correct balance of Nitrogen (leaf growth), Potassium (root development) and Phosphorus (food production) for the new grass plants is essential. It’s important to get application rates right too and to use controlled release nutrition.

Make it Rain! This is Magic! By writing this article in mid-August, asking you to save as much water as possible, and encouraging you keep us, our animals and wildlife safe by not using BBQs or lighting bonfires, when so many plants are tinder dry, we may ensure significant rain by the end of August. Rain dancing would help as well, could our creative arts sector help?

26 The Cost of Living We are already seeing the effect of increases in the cost of almost everything, and this will not improve in the short term. Energy costs will increase dramatically as temperatures fall when we move into autumn. Poorer households can end up paying a huge percentage of their income on heating and lighting. (The definition of fuel poverty is when the household is spending more than 10% of their income on energy.) The number of such households is becoming larger. There are people living in our towns and villages that will have to choose between eating and heating this year. Taking inspiration from Miguel de Cervantes’ seventeenthcentury literary masterpiece, Don Quixote, and set during the violent Spanish Inquisition, Man of La Mancha follows failed playwright and tax collector Miguel de Cervantes as he is thrown into prison for attempting to tax a monastery. As he awaits trial, a kangaroo court threatens to confiscate Cervantes’ precious and uncompleted manuscript for Don Quixote. While giving his defence, Cervantes, along with his servant, suddenly transform into the characters of the very book he is trying to save. As both of their imaginations run wild, the duo, now believing themselves to be Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, do everything in their power to destroy evil, set things right and restore the age of chivalry that has long thought to be dead.

Water Restrictions

For the past eight months we have had extraordinarily little rain, the driest July since 1935, this is impacting river flow. The river levels in Hampshire are lower than they should be at this time of year, and this is where some of the fresh water supplied to us comes from. Therefore, these temporary water restrictions seem to be set to continue. Please see savingsave-waterwww.southernwater.co.uk/retail/foradviceandwatertips.

We are so pleased that this new set of equipment has been extremely popular since its opening at Arlebury park in July. Many residents were keen to see the upper part of Broad Street pedestrianised. The Town Council had several meetings with Hampshire Highway engineers and designers to endeavour to put this in place. However, as formal plans have not been received from Hampshire County Council, the road has been re-opened and the planted troughs have been re-located. For the future we hope that this will not be a forgotten project but will of course keep you updated. It was a great pleasure to see many residents at the new playground opening on Saturday 6th August. We’ve been delighted to see so many children enjoying the new playground. The dry weather has had a knock-on effect on the site with the ground turning to dust and the grass, has not appeared as wished. We hope the rains will see it bounce back to life.

Photo is of President David Marshall at the opening of Stratton Bates playground.

The new President of Alresford Rotary David Marshall shares his aims for the future of Rotary in Alresford and surrounding villages.

40

My primary objective is to ensure it’s sustainability. Although most people join Rotary to volunteer their time to support the local community, it has to be much more than that. We have a fantastic bunch of men and women that have fun together and enjoy the unique position Rotary has at the centre of so much that’s going on in and around Alresford. I am keen to enhance their experience by adding new, regular social events such as winery visits, jazz evening trips, sporting outings, walks and more. We have moved away from being a dinner club and now all dinners are optional, which also helps to keep the cost down. Our most recent new members work full time but wish to make a difference to the local community helping to run local events such as our Bonfire Evening or 10k run. Do you want to attract new members? Yes, that’s key for me. Although we are open to all adults, we are especially keen to bring in more younger men and women. Our long serving members bring a depth and breadth of experience in the community that we can all learn from, but we are keen to take on new people with enthusiasm and new ideas for events and fundraising.

Local schools who supported the scheme last year are being contacted but it is not just a scheme for schools. Everyone and all local organisations are encouraged to take part – please contact us and make a child’s Christmas!

For the last 27 years and 15 years respectively Ken Coburn and Steve Walker have been an integral part of the contribution that Alresford Rotary has been able to make to benefit the local community. Ken has been Treasurer for more years than he might have wished and his expertise has masterminded the additional lighting needed at Arlebury Park for the annual Rotary bonfire celebrations (Friday 4th November this year). Steve is a past President of Alresford Rotary and has for many years been a principal organiser of the Christmas shoebox scheme and Alresford Rotary’s annual charity quiz. The significant help and support from their respective wives Marlene and Kay must not be overlooked! Both have recently left Alresford Rotary and we thank them, Marlene and Kay for all they have done in living the Rotary message of “service before self” and, with our best wishes, we hope to remain in contact with them (although in Steve and Kay’s case from a distance of several thousand miles)!

Please make up a Christmas shoebox (or more than one) for a disadvantaged or displaced child in Eastern Europe who may never have received a present before!

It’s easy. Just contact me or any Alresford Rotarian for a chat and you can join in a Rotary Event, social or business meeting to get to know us all.

Alresford is a small town so Alresford Rotary will never be huge. With a membership of up to, say, 35 we can all know each other and maintain the informality and friendly feel of the club. That would be hard to maintain if larger. Is your focus ‘just’ Alresford? Not at all. In fact, the name is misleading. We currently have members who live in Winchester, Ropley, Itchen Abbas, and Bighton as well as Alresford and are keen to attract new members from anywhere in and around mid Hampshire and to have the opportunity of making a difference to the outlying villages as well as Alresford.

Wessex Rotary Shoebox Scheme

What are your hopes and aspirations for Alresford Rotary?

More than 35 years of successful fundraising events that have enabled us to invest in many good local causes. Most recently the Arle riverbank repair, Eel House restoration and new Stratton Bates playground. What most locals do not see is our support internationally. Being the world’s largest volunteer organisation means we are able to send funds directly to where it is needed worldwide. For example, this year we have contributed funds to the Global Rotary Fund in aid of the Ukraine crisis and arranged micro-loans to hundreds of small businesses in Africa and Asia. How can I find out more?

Because in recent years it has become increasingly difficult to source boxes of the prescribed size Rotary can now provide boxes as well as the scheme leaflet (wjrp@ hotmail.co.uk 738788) and both are available now!

What in Rotary are you most proud of?

Ken and Steve

Thank you

Does Alresford Rotary have big aspirations?

Penny Peters - My Life in Quilts Penny says, “This is a selection of my quilts from the early eighties to the present day using various quilting techniques. They are mostly my own design, and some have been inspired by others. I learned dress-making as a girl from my mother and started quilting in the seventies. I have always loved sewing and I enjoy quilting because there are so many different styles and techniques to try - something for everyone! It is also a social activity. There are many quilting groups such as The National Quilters Guild and numerous local groups.”

I took time out (on a very hot day) to walk round areas with community services and a Winchester City Council (WCC ) cabinet member for community and Housing. Many residents had raised complaints about the state of the area along with other issues raised. I am pleased to say that the issues raised are being addressed. However, for many, the grass cutting remains a promanent UKissue.shared

Proposed car park at The Dean (update) The developers for the planned Dean car park have informed WCC that they wish to hold a public consultation on the planning application in the Autumn, with submissions by the year end. Please look out for notices on this proposed development so that residents and visitors can have their views considered. I have been supporting this proposed development since speaking at a cabinet meeting in November 2017. At this meeting monies were set aside for the development, I am pleased to see progress.

The Power of Fun: by Jane Gandee, headmistress of St Swithun’s, Winchester

Image ©Creative Commons 2.0 - Neil Howard

Price defines fun as activities that are playful, involve a connection with others and involve ‘flow’ or being so immersed in what you are doing that you don’t notice time passing. She also points out that as we get older, we are often encouraged to take things more seriously. Yet there is no evidence that this produces any positive benefit. Our aim at St Swithun’s is to have fun in a range of different ways. And it’s not just about the students. Why would any of us want to work in a fun-free community? Indeed, as far as I am concerned, one of the most important advantages of working in a school is the many, varied opportunities for fun. Increasingly, however, we need to differentiate between true fun and the type of activities that our students are told are fun, but which actually leave you feeling ‘dead inside’ as Price puts it, such as scrolling through your social media feed. Therefore, we have been turning to more traditional activities such as dancing. We now have a school dance featuring iconic St Swithun’s moves such as cradling (a lacrosse move) and playing the air guitar, which we have performed together on several occasions. Similarly, nothing beats communal singing or solving quirky, interactive problems in the style of TaskMaster. These activities are designed to include the three key components: playfulness, connection with others and On‘flow’.our final day of the term, we all (guests, students and staff) sang My Bonny Lies Over the Ocean complete with actions. There wasn’t a serious face in the marquee and we left for the holidays buzzing with a spring in our step and the intention of creating further opportunities for fun over the summer. I am sure that the intentional creation of micro moments of fun would help everyone to enjoy life more fully. I am certainly looking forward to more minor injuries as I wholeheartedly embrace my inner child.

St Swithuns, Winchester

As I write this, I am ruefully aware of my skinned elbows, and a gash on my chin which necessitated a visit to A+E. In the space of a week, I managed to acquire the injuries of an energetic toddler. My elbows are the result of an over-exuberant slide down the inflatables that we had in school on the penultimate day of term whereas the chin injury is from falling over my own feet whilst playing a family tennis match. Did they hurt and are they faintly ridiculous? Absolutely, but I acquired them whilst having fun. I came across the Power of Fun by Catherine Price earlier this year, and it has had a big impact on my approach to life. As I have got older, I have instinctively tried to take myself less seriously. Afterall, as a headteacher, it’s always safer to laugh at yourself before the students do. And now, I have evidence to reinforce the importance of a playful approach to life.

Price outlines the benefits of fun for everyone. As she says, ‘if you make fun a priority, you will be healthier and have more energy. You will be more productive, less resentful and less stressed. You will find community and a sense of purpose. You will stop languishing and start flourishing.’ Frankly, who wouldn’t want to remove languishing from their life?

In his spare time, Adam enjoys running (he has run a couple of London marathons and a few half-marathons), walking and cooking. Although his playing days are over, he supports Bath Rugby Club and enjoys watching them at the Recreation Round in Bath. Adam loves the theatre, whether it’s regional or West End and also enjoys going to the ballet at Covent Garden and Sadler’s Wells.

AN INDEPENDENT CO-EDUCATIONAL SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN AGED 3-11 YEARS, WINCHESTER "A powerhouse of a Prep school"CURRENT PARENT

The Governors are delighted to welcome Adam King as the Headmaster of Prince’s Mead School from September 2022. In September 2021, it was announced that Peter Thacker was stepping down to become Headmaster of Bishopsgate School after 4 years of outstanding leadership at Prince’s Mead. After 13 years of Headship at Thorngrove School, Highbury, Adam is relocating to Winchester to lead this vibrant and adventurous Prep School & Nursery. He was previously House Master at Giggleswick School in the Yorkshire Dales and St Faith’s School in Cambridge. In 2004, he took up the post of Deputy Head at Thorngrove and was appointed as its Head, five years later. He has been Headmaster at Thorngrove School, in Highclere, ever since. As well his day job, he is also a Compliance and Educational Quality Inspector for ISI, on the Academic Committee for the Independent Schools Examinations Board and the Secretary of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools District 10 Committee. He finds these additional roles interesting, fulfilling and enjoyable and feels that in many ways they support his role as a Head by giving Adam King, Headmaster Elect at Prince’s Mead School him fresh ideas and challenging him to be the best person (and Head) that he can be.

Welcome to Prince’s Mead

EDUCATION

Adam extends a warm welcome to every new family that will be joining Prince’s Mead in the coming year.

Adam and his family are very much looking forward to moving down to Winchester and making the most of living in such a beautiful city, as well as the surrounding countryside. We are delighted to have made an exceptional appointment for our new Head at Prince’s Mead School.
