Going, Going….. Gong © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2022

“Who’ll give me fifty pounds? Twenty pounds then, surely. Thank-you sir. Twenty, twenty two… Oh wait, fifty pounds now on the internet, sixty, seventy – fighting it out - eighty-five pounds, are we all done at eighty-fiiiyve? Going once. Twice.” Bang, the gavel went down. Disgruntled mutterings behind her; “There were better bargains at auctions before they went online and on the telly.” She turned around to see who was talking and the hem of her coat swept a small ornament onto the floor. In the poorly timed lull of background chatter, the tinkle of breaking porcelain was huge. The auctioneer drily commented “Madam, the idea is to buy things, not break things” to the general amusement of all. “So sorry!” Scarlet-faced and apologetic, she scrambled to pick up the pieces, grovelling around the feet of onlookers and under tables. Mortifying. She’d been worried that by scratching her nose or touching an earlobe she’d inadvertently bid on something hideously expensive. Or worse, something expensive and hideous. But this was more dreadful. And the coat, which was to blame, was not even warm enough for the auction room’s chill. Slinking off to the back, she tried to look inconspicuous. Eventually it was over and Himself came and found her. Shivering, she moaned “It’s like a meat locker in here, albeit somewhat bizarrely furnished. Freezing. No one mentions that on Antiques Road Trip. I think I‘m mildly hypothermic and… ” “And very grumpy.” Chuckling, he cut her off mid moan, “Don’t worry, Darling, we’ll be going, going, gone, ha ha, in a moment.” At home, she cheered up, warmed up and dished lunch up, whilst Himself pored over his wins. “Didn’t know this was in here. I bought the lot for the postcard albums.” Delving into a box he produced a brass dinner gong and struck it with the little mallet. BONGBONGBONG!! “Very ‘luncheon is served m’lord’. What fun!” “My mother could have done with that. Dad vanished every time his meal appeared on the table. ‘Where’s that man!’ she’d say. Drove her nuts.” “Well, we don’t need it.” Himself said airily “Also it seems we have acquired a bread maker along with the strimmer that I was really after. Wonder what happened to the one we had. I do love freshly baked bread.”

6

They both loved freshly baked bread. Almost as much as freshly baked bread loved their love handles.. Should she confess that, some time back, she’d managed to offload the breadmaker; going, going, gone.. to a charity shop? But Himself was fondly recollecting “Remember that sun-dried tomato loaf you left to cool on the worktop? Disappeared. We had to feel each of the dog’s tummies to find out who’d pinched it.” “I do. It was the Labrador. Well it would be. Not so much as a crumb left as evidence. Who was it said Labradors were an intelligent stomach on four legs?” She finished plating up the meal and turned to ask. The room was empty. Just as the meal was served, Himself had gone. No going, going… Simply gone. She called out “Darling?” Unbelievable. “Where’s that man!” She caught her reflection in the kitchen window and sighed. “Mirror mirror on the wall, I’ve become my mother after all.” But as she moved to go find him, she tripped over the dogs milling around her feet. The room? Not as empty as she’d thought… “So, do I risk leaving you two alone in here? Mmnn..” The spaniels looked up at her and wagged their tails in encouragement. “To be fair, you’re not the criminal mastermind the Labrador was.” One gave a little ‘parp’ and sniffed its own bottom in surprise, as if to prove the point. “And not as tall, although those telescopic necks of yours - useful for assailing the not-so-dizzy heights of the worktop.” Shaking her head suspiciously at them, they looked in another direction, feigning innocence. “And you’d be oh-so-sorry once the red mist had lifted and all that was left were empty plates.” Furtively, they gave each other a guilty sideways glance. “Aha! That’s what I thought.” She stroked the spaniels’ silky heads and had an inspired idea. Rummaging in the auction box, she took out the dusty item. BONGBONGBONG!! “Luncheon is served m’lord! Come and get it before it’s going, going, gone… to the dogs.”

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Show your love this Valentine's Day with these delicious Macarons. Makes 30 macarons For the Macarons 200g icing sugar 110g ground almond flour 3 medium egg whites 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 70g granulated sugar Food colouring as desired For the filling 25g unsalted butter, room temperature 110g double cream 120g dark chocolate, finely chopped 75g raspberry jam Method Place the ground almonds and icing sugar and half a teaspoon of salt into the bowl of a food processor and pulse about 12 times until the mixtue appears fully combined. Sieve the mixture carefully into a large bowl, making sure that any mixture remaining in the seive is disgarded. In another bowl take the egg whites and the other half teaspoon of salt and mix (using a hand mixer) until soft peaks form. Slowly add the granulated sugar and continue to whisk until stiff peaks form, you should be able to invert the bowl without your ingredients falling out. If your mixture is ready beat in the vanilla extract and food colouring.

10

Mix your almond flour mixture in about three parts to the beaten eggs. Gently, using a spatula fold in the mixture. Continue adding the almond flour mixture carefully until it forms a batter. it should fall in a thick ribbon from the spatula. The ribbon should also fade back into the batter within about 30 secs – if it doesn’t, fold a few more times. Heat oven to 170C/150C fan/gas 3-4. Line three baking sheets with baking parchment. Transfer the batter to a piping bag fitted with a large round nozzle. Hold the bag vertically to the tray, with the nozzle about 1cm from it. Pipe rounds about 2.5cm in diameter onto the prepared baking sheets. Leave to rest for 30 mins, or until the macarons have developed a skin. Bake the macarons for 17 minutes, until the feet are wellrisen and the macarons don’t stick to the parchment paper. Transfer the macarons to a wire rack to cool completely before filling. For the filling, place the cream in a small saucepan and the chocolate in a bowl. Bring the cream just to the boil and pour over the chocolate. Leave to stand for a few mins, then stir until combined. Add the butter and stir until smooth, leave to cool and thicken. Place the filling mixture into a piping bag with a smaller nozzle and gently pipe the edge of half the macarons. Fill the centre with rasberry jam and sandwich with another macaron shell. Pop the finished macarons in an airtight container for 24 hours to rest for the best results, enjoy!

COMMUNITY Meon Valley Lions News A huge thank you from Santa and his Elves Christmas time can be a miserable for some many people and its only with the support of local people that we were able to pass on the kindness and support those vulnerable and in need at this time of year. Despite only spending half the time ‘on the road’ helping Santa and his Elves raised a grand total of £4,213.37. Everyone gave a warm welcome and generously donated, not only at our door-to-door collections but at our static collections, outside local retail outlets. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated.

Santa and Fareham Rotary helped children smile!

Looking at the festive period, it’s been a Santaful Christmas for the Rotary Club of Fareham. You never quite knew where Santa was going to appear but Father Christmas liked attending local festive parties. Among those he visited were for the local Refuges for Fareham and Gosport. The big man in the red suit of course made an appearance to the delight of the children! Rotarians Mike Hurley and Bob Mussellwhite were at these seasonal events to make the Christmas of each child extra special. Santa was accompanied by the very helpful Fareham Elf handing out presents to each of the children. As President of the Rotary Club of Fareham, Norman Chapman, says “It’s so good that we were able to help make Christmas extra special for these families. Happy memories in childhood are made this way and our Club feels privileged to have been part of this positive experience.”

Lions - Always by your side Thanks to the generous support of local people throughout December, in addition to our Christmas Hampers and Chocolate donations via the Foodbank we were able, amongst other things, to provide a family in Wickham with new beds; they were absolutely thrilled. We also helped a Gentleman in Knowle in need of a bed and mattress. Thank you to the local person who kindly donated and delivered these for us. If you’d like to make a donation: Our Website: www.meonvalleylionsclub.org.uk/donate.html Text Donation: Simply text LIONS to 70490 to donate £3 or if you would like to donate between £1 and £20 text LIONS followed by your donation amount e.g. to donate £5 text LIONS 5 or to donate £10 text LIONS 10. Texts cost your chosen donation amount plus one standard network rate message. Send a cheque: made payable to Meon Valley Lions Club (CIO) to the address below As always thank you for your support We need your help! As you will have seen in our social media our minibus let us down badly this year and we are in desperate need to a new one, to ensure we are able to support the local people we do. If can help or know anyone who can, please get in touch. Date for your diary We’re pleased to announce we’ll be running the Swanmore Fete again this year so put 9th July in your calendar.

18

Nearer to Christmas, along with the Mayor of Fareham Councillor and Rotarian Mrs Pamela Bryant, Santa and the Fareham Elf made an appearance at the Friday Night Charity for adults with mild and moderate learning disabilities. They meet at the Scout Hall in Highlands Road and there were sacks full of pressies for that special occasion. In addition you may have seen members of the Rotary Club of Fareham collecting at Sainsburys Broadcut in the town in the run up to Christmas. £1050.00 was raised for our Rotary charities and we are grateful to Sainsburys for their support once more.

You can count the calories and still enjoy our Spring comedy presentation of “Love me Slender” Siobhan was Slim for Life's 'Slimmer of the Year' - the ideal leader of the local group! BUT her autocratic rule is achieved through shaming and condescension. New members join and they're not prepared for this level of devotion, and Siobhan's theology, and mind, begin to unravel. It's the triumph over discipline and sacrifice that every woman wants to see! Let's hear it for the girls... and biscuits! Productions planned for 31st march/1st + 2nd April, but check our website for any updates. www.curdridgedrama.co.uk and tickets www.ticketsource.co.uk

Mapp & Lucia: new adaptation of E F Benson's classic work of morals, mores and social climbing! TFT engages, inspires, entertains and challenges audiences with theatrical productions that range from the classics to new works; we train and support the next generation of theatre artists; we provide arts education programs that promote life-long learning to a diverse community; and we celebrate the essential power of the theatre to illuminate our common humanity and community spirit. Mapp & Lucia is a brand new adaptation by Charly Armstrong of E F Benson's classic work of morals, mores and social climbing, which opens at Titchfield Festival Theatre on the 9th February. When Lucia Lucas arrives in the village of Tilling, their current queen bee, Elizabeth Mapp, finds herself locked in a quietly reactive yet uncompromising battle for the crown; but how many tea parties will it take to win back her neighbour's affections? And how can her weekly bridge nights compete with Lucia's piano recitals, flawless Italian, and coveted recipe for Lobster à la Risholme? The gauntlet is down and the punch bowl is filled… Charly Armstrong is the director of Mapp & Lucia. Charly said, “I read the books when I was in college and I really enjoyed them. I’ve wanted to do an adaptation of Mapp and Lucia since then; and this year felt the right time to do it. The cast are brilliant; they fit

22

really well into their roles and they totally get the subtle humour of the books. “The title characters of Mapp and Lucia are almost polar opposites. Lucia is a very modern, fashionable woman who appears to have all these accomplishments and talents that seem very exotic to her neighbours in Tilling. Mapp, by comparison, is somewhat stuffy and officious, and she likes to try and put Lucia in her place - though it often doesn’t work. The frustrating thing is, Lucia is a fraud and Mapp is right, but no one else can see it. “I think a lot of people will enjoy Mapp & Lucia for its subtle humour, and watching these bitter quarrels about nothing at all important play out in front of them. It has all the nostalgia of being a classic British comedy, but with that sharp wit which ensures that it doesn’t ever become dated. Also, it’s light and fun, it has nothing to do with politics, or current affairs which is a refreshing break in these times. It’s a little bit of escapism.” Titchfield Festival Theatre’s production of Mapp & Lucia opens at the Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane on Wednesday 9th February until Saturday 19th February 2022. The shows start at 7.30pm. A matinée performance is on Sunday 13th February 2022 at 2.30pm. For more information including booking tickets, please go to http:// titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com/ or contact our Box Office on 0333 666 3366.

Defra’s response to the Landscape Review is welcome, but nature recovery and climate change demand greater resource and ambition

T

South Downs National Park

revor Beattie, Chief Executive of the South Downs National Park Authority, said: “There is much to welcome in the Government’s response to the 2019 Landscape Review, which highlights the vital role that National Parks and AONBs play for nature, people and the green recovery of our nation. “The SDNPA has been working hard with our partners and communities since 2019 to deliver on the full aspirations of the Landscape Review. We have launched our ambitious ReNature nature recovery campaign, developed innovative private finance partnerships to tackle climate change, brought the wonder of the South Downs National Park to more people than ever before, connected young people to nature and launched our Health and Wellbeing Strategy, which the Government response has picked out for particular praise.” Trevor added: “But the Government response does not go far or fast enough. Important proposals from the Landscape Review are not addressed, the climate crisis is little more than a footnote and no detail is given about the private finance that Government says is needed as they acknowledge that the ‘core grant does not provide the opportunity to increase funding to the scale needed to deliver [their] vision’.”

26

“Now is the time for bold, rapid, and well-resourced action. That was the clear message of COP 26. The SDNPA, its communities, visitors and partners stand ready to help deliver our national response to the defining crises of our time – nature depletion and climate change. “The SDNPA will study the consultation document and produce a detailed response. In the meantime we encourage all who love our protected landscapes to feed into the consultation and support our collective national effort to build a greener and better future for us all.” The full Defra press release announcing the consultation will be available to view here - https://www.gov.uk/government/ news/ambitious-proposals-to-strengthen-our-protectedlandscapes-announced The Government’s response to the Landscapes Review can be found here - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ landscapes-review-national-parks-and-aonbs-governmentresponse The consultation can be found here - https://www.gov.uk/ government/consultations/landscapes-review-nationalparks-and-aonbs-implementing-the-review

PROFESSIONAL / COMMUNITY Hampshire publisher wants to find new writers A project championing new writers has been launched by a Hampshire publisher.

from selected writers around the world.

Budding writers are being invited to submit their fiction and poetry to Tim Saunders in Locks Heath, who is publishing a book of short stories and an anthology of poetry

“I am particularly keen to promote fresh, new talent so extend this invitation to anyone aged 16 and over,” says Tim, who launched his latest books this month and writes for publications in England and America. “The challenge is that stories must not exceed 1,000 words and poetry needs to be 30 lines or under.” The deadline is April 28, 2022. Mr Mac At last, 2022 is well under way and let us hope for a better year and the end of the pandemic. Technology has, as always, moved along in leaps and bounds over the last 12 months and I am sure it will do so this year as well. I am pleased to report that many over 55s are embracing more and more new technology. Not just the 60 and 70 year olds, I have clients in their 80s and even some in their 90s! My advice to everyone is do not let the device control you, you control the device. Use them for what you need and be comfortable with what you are using.

As more and more of you are asking me for advice when choosing something new, I can tell you that do not always need to buy the latest iPhone, iPad, Mac computer or Windows laptop when you decide to change your device. Apple and Amazon offer refurbished, in most cases as good as new, for much less than the price of a new model and with a 12 month warranty. I can help to advise on the best one for your needs. Please call me to book an appointment 07392 552 592. Finally, this month if you are fed up with Alexa and would prefer something with a much better sound quality, try the Apple Home Pod Mini. It sounds so much better than the Echo Dot Alexa speaker. I used to be very happy with my Bose mini speaker until I changed for these. You can install them in different rooms and connect to any Apple device wirelessly. They are just £89 each and available in various colours.

Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club News Shoeboxes follow up Following on from the news in our last Press Release that we had managed to send over 300 boxes to add to the 18,000 boxes collected throughout our district, we have now received pictures of local Rotarians in Albania distributing some of the boxes donated to local children. Thank you again for your amazing support of this scheme which brings a lot of Christmas cheer to many Children who would otherwise not have any presents at this time. Christmas collections I am pleased to say that we were able to resume some sort of normality at the end of last year, after all of the cancelations of the last 18months or so, and Santa, plus his music playing brightly lit train “Roger” were able to tour the local area covering many of the roads in Bishop’s Waltham, Waltham Chase, Horton Heath and Fair Oak. Thanks to your amazing generosity we were able to raise well over £5,600 to help us help others, which is our highest total raised during the many years we have been out with Santa and “Roger”! Local support Thanks to the generous support we receive through our fundraising events etc. we are able to aid many local groups with their charitable

30

works such as the Meon Valley Food Bank, Meon Valley Baby Bank and Spark Community Space, but we also help individuals, when there is a specific need. Often in these cases people are directed to contact us or we are contacted by others who know that an individual or family need help but are unable to help themselves. In these circumstances we very carefully consider each individual case presented to us, and look at the finances available to us, and carry out whatever checks we feel are necessary to the case presented. On many occasions where the need arises we have pooled our resources with other Rotary clubs in the area and with the local Lions club. Like our Facebook page or take a look at our website for updates on what is going on, what we have been up to and how you can help us help others! ian.treveil@bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk
