urprised to find herself flat on her back, she looked sideways. Inches from her face, her terrier was sporting a similarly stunned expression in her fur trimmed, smoky eyes.

The weeny Houdini once even disappeared from the rigorously ‘dog proofed’ garden for a whole day, returning triumphant and unrepentant with a cargo of a thousand ticks. Her mistress picked up her wriggling furry body and kissed her; so relieved she was back, and the dog so pleased to be back, that noone could be cross.

They’d been walking parallel to the river. Marshy, thickly populated with brambles and rotting fallen trees covered in moss. Scrambling over slippery logs and side-stepping thorny trip wires required stamina, agility and close quarter concentration. So when the deer rose out of the ground where it had lain hidden and camouflaged in the brown, decaying detritus, she’d been unprepared. In its flight it struck her full in the chest, leapt gracefully over her dog and fled the scene, leaving her prone. The terrier was in disbelief; the nerve of that funny looking dog with the pointy feet and sticks on its head! Years before, resting literally in the palm of her hand, she’d been the tiniest puppy when she was that best-of-all birthday present. Himself had bought a chicken coop and told her to look in the Land Rover for another gift. Expecting a chicken – well, you would, wouldn’t you – she was surprised to find a little scrap of excited, yapping fur. ‘Chicken’ didn’t quite cut it as a name, so they chose something fittingly cute and chirpy for the tiny creature. And she was extremely cute and terribly chirpy, but she was also a terrier… A Border-cross at that. With a bit of a volatile nature, she was often referred to as the ‘cross Border’. To be fair, her wayward traits presented themselves early on and they should have been prepared from the get go. Her very first walk was going so well. Proud owner, tiny puppy, lots of compliments and charm. Until tiny puppy scented something more interesting in the form of two large dogs on the other side of the park, that is. She homed in on them. My, she was fast – like a blunt and furry missile. Her proud owner, not so much. She scooped up the miscreant whilst panting and wheezing like an asthmatic accordion with the effort of running and yelling at the same time. The two large dogs and owner were, thankfully, amused at the tiny terrier who’d been telling them off and making a dreadful noise, something between a scream, a bark and a howl. And at a surprising volume for one so small.

Yes, she admitted it without a shred of shame - that dog had her wrapped around her little claw. She was putty in her paws. But the terrier would lie on her sick bed all day when her mistress was ill. A personal protection squad of one, snout towards the door she was ready to repel all hostiles. And when her mistress cradled her in her arms and kissed her soft ears, smelling faintly of elderflowers, the small dog would croon and half close her eyes with pleasure.

But the cross Border was also, it has to be said, ‘a bit of a worry’.

One sunny Saturday just before Christmas, the terrier was running through a narrow thicket as they walked alongside on the grassy riverbank. Himself, hearing the drone of an insect, commented that it was very late for wasps. When they reached the end of the wood they called their dog. And called. Eventually she tottered out of the trees, collapsing at their feet. Having presumably encountered the mother lode nest, the small, furry body was crawling with wasps. Himself scooped up her limp and comatose little body. A mercy dash to the nearest vet, adrenaline shots and an oxygen tent – and the terrier was saved! Relieved tears all round. Reluctantly they left the prone and semi-conscious dog with the vets, who said she needed to overnight with them. However, they hadn’t long been home when the ‘phone rang. “Hello?” In the background, she could hear the most awful noise. Hard to describe – something between a scream, a bark and a howl. And so loud. It sounded familiar… And cross. “Hello.” Said the slightly stressed sounding voice at the other end. “Please can you come and collect your dog. We think she’s well enough to go home…” But all things come to an end and eventually she lost her constant companion, her terrier. To use the word ‘lost’ is, of course, a flimsy euphemism - it makes it sound like she wandered off. Which actually was clearly a recurring theme throughout her 16 odd years. But all too soon, the wet-nosed, furry vandal broke her heart and was gone, sauntering off and wagging her tail behind her…

Open Garden at Tichborne House Sunday 3rd July

Following on from last years 2 successful open days we will support The Hampshire Medical Fund with another open garden on Sunday 3 July from 1-5pm. The entrance fee will go directly to them so please join us for a wander around the garden and in turn help them to supply Basingstoke, Winchester and Andover hospitals with state of the art equipment not available on the NHS. The Tichborne family have lived on this site beside the river Itchen since the 12th century. They have a fascinating history - there’s a Catholic martyr, Chidiock Tichborne; a lost-at-sea heir, Sir Roger

Tichborne, and his impersonator, Arthur Orton known as the Tichborne Claimant, whose trial gripped Victorian society. Then there’s the Tichborne Dole, the giving of flour to locals, which still continues on 25 March each year and was instigated by the charitable Lady Mabella Tichborne in the thirteenth century. The bones of the garden may be rooted in this history with a large house containing a private chapel beside a moat, ancient trees and Victorian out buildings but the essence of the garden is progressive and created almost entirely over the last 20 years. An original plan by Michele Hickman for an area around the moat has been tinkered with, extended and adapted over the years. More hedges have been planted and core structural shapes have been integrated to give the perennials and grasses a backdrop and winter interest. Seed is left to settle and the sinuous bed shapes are in direct response to the surrounding rolling hills and curvaceous boundary hedges visible from the house. There is a fully productive walled kitchen garden with cut flower beds, fruit trees and vegetables plus a rickety greenhouse. Outside this walled garden you will find an orchard and berry cage. The garden is very much a work in progress and a private family space but for a few days this year it will be open for people to visit and enjoy (hopefully) and maybe even get inspiration from for their own gardens. The entrance fee from these days will be donated to charities chosen by Catherine Loudon, whose late husband Anthony was the grandson of Sir Anthony Doughty Tichborne, and their 3 children. Wheel House spruced up for the season! Rotary Club of Fareham

As Lead Rotarian for the Wheel House Terry Dowland says “It’s the start of the season and bookings can be made - we wanted to be ready with a super clean Wheel House for our users. It is only a few steps from the shoreline and we average 130 groups visiting a year.” Those using the Wheel House include groups and schools for children and adults with disabilities (and their carers) giving much needed respite with the sea air and promenade close by. Many others benefit too from days at the seaside - Guiding, WI, MS Society, day care centres, church organisations and community groups are just a few of those who have booked and enjoyed our Wheel House. The Rotary Club of Fareham has the most wonderful facility, the Wheel House right on the beach at Hill Head, which we use to support those living and working in the area. It is well used each year by community groups and charities and many have benefited from a day at the seaside. They can all enjoy the facilities that now includes new kitchen fixtures. Everything needs looking after, of course, and Rotarians carried out the annual spring clean at the weekend.

International musicians head for West Meon

This year’s West Meon Music festival, from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th September, will have an impressive line-up of guest musicians joining the renowned Primrose Piano Quartet, which founded the annual event in 2011.

Highlights include guitar legend John Mills, a student of the great Segovia, who will be joined by the Primrose’s cellist, Andrew Fuller, for a programme of Spanish and Latin American music for cello and guitar at East Meon church on the Saturday morning. Not to be missed on Sunday morning at West Meon church will be a recital by Bulgarian pianist Emanuil Ivanov, who has attracted international acclaim since winning the 2019 Ferruccio Busoni Piano Competition in Italy, at the tender age

Great success for Fareham schools On Saturday 7th May the final District round of the prestigious Rotary International Debate 2022 for schools was held at the Mountbatten School, Romsey. Two teams from Fareham, an intermediate age team from West Hill Park School and a senior age team from Crofton School, had beaten off all the challengers to get to this final stage. Teams took part at this round from as far afield as Salisbury, Shaftesbury, Poole and Southampton. In this highly competitive third round, both teams gave excellent presentations and the team from Crofton School won the Senior Teams round with their motion “Is poetry more powerful than the novel?” The Crofton team comprised Mollie Delahay as the chairperson, Abigail Hughes as the proposer for the motion and Lillie Dix as the opposer. The judges commented on the superb quality of all the entries which makes Crofton School’s achievement stand out even more. Norman Chapman, President of the Rotary Club of Fareham that held the first round of the competition, said “We are delighted to see how all the dedication and hard work of the students of these two local Schools, and their teachers, paid off by their achievement in getting through to this round. Our congratulations go to Crofton School for winning this highly contested final round.”

Falklands Fighter Controller talks to Aviation Group

Members of the Daedalus Aviation and Heritage Group were treated to a presentation by one of its own members, Squadron Leader Joe Marsden, on Life After the Conflict in the Falklands. His talk, illustrated with historical and current information, explained what life was like in the forty years since the conflict and during the tenth anniversary of the campaign. Joe’s three tours took him 2,000 feet up Byron Heights on West Falkland as Senior Operations Officer. Later he became Commanding Officer and Master Controller at the Air Defence Control and Reporting Centre on the summit of Mount Kent in East Falkland overlooking the capital Port Stanley. Finally, Joe became Air Defence Commander at Mount Pleasant, the Headquarters of the British Forces in the Islands, scrambling fighter aircraft as needed. Joe explained how changes to the military garrison and its equipment had evolved to cover the threat over the years. He also demonstrated how these changes affected life for the Islanders. The Falklands are 8000 miles from the UK but, as a British Overseas Territory, they are covered by British Forces for defence. Chair of the aviation group, Terry Coombes, said “Joe brought us up to date on the air defence progression in the Falklands from Harrier to the Phantom, then the Tornado and today replaced by the Typhoon and showed us some dramatic aerial footage. The support aircraft included the Hercules and the VC10 now replaced by the A400 and the Voyager.” Joe’s talk clearly demonstrated the isolation at remote radar sites with extremes of weather. The war memorials of the 1914 Battle of the Falklands and the 1982 conflict were covered as were some of the military cemeteries. The civilian population has now grown from around 2,000 at the time of the 1982 conflict to 3,500 today who benefit from tourism. Visitors to the islands have massively increased from 700 at the time of the conflict to 30,000 per year now with many cruise ships visiting and boosting the finances of those in the Falkland Islands. Hampshire publisher publishes a book in Australia A start up Hampshire publisher has published a book in Australia. Tim Saunders Publications in Locks Heath, Hampshire, which only started trading in January, has published What If? a collection of short stories by Sydney based writer Carolyn Thrum. “It’s very exciting,” says Tim, who has a very busy book publishing schedule ahead. “Carolyn, who was told about me by a friend who lives in England, then contacted me. We both agreed it was too good an opportunity to miss. Carolyn is a hugely talented writer and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading and editing her short stories.” What If? by Carolyn Thrum from Sydney has been published by Tim Saunders Publications and features a lively and engaging collection of 14 of Carolyn’s best short stories. They cover various subjects from sentimentality to loyalty and the challenges presented by old age. But Carolyn also considers darker aspects of human nature; fear and greed while also bravely exploring the damage caused by abuse and how it can tear a family apart. Born in the beautiful Blue Mountains, two hours west of Sydney, Carolyn has lived in the city most of her life. She is a member of Writers NSW. Separately, one of Carolyn’s stories will also be published in Hope for Ukraine, scheduled for publication later in the year by Tim Saunders Publications. “For this exciting book I am looking for writing that celebrates freedom and hope and 100 per cent of the royalties will go to the Sunflower of Peace Foundation (sunflowerofpeace.com.), a non-profit organization committed to helping Ukrainians affected by the Russian military invasion,” says Tim. Our observatory is situated on the edge of beautiful South Downs National Park. Like so many other organisations over the past 18 months we too have had to curtail our activities. However, as the lockdown nationally is easing so we are beginning to open the observatory to more activities. We are hoping that we can begin resuming our very popular Open Evenings for the general public in the autumn and also take private visits for Guides, Scouts U3A and other interested groups etc.. Bishop's Waltham Rotary Club News Wessex Heartbeat Cycle Sportive and Charity Quiz night Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club has committed to helping Wessex Heartbeat with their work in support of the people of all ages living with cardiac conditions, and their families, who are undergoing treatment at Southampton General Hospital. Several of our members recently assisted with their very successful Cycle Sportive by providing marshalling and admin support. Around 70 riders took part on either the 40 & 70 mile routes starting off from the picturesque Embley Park, on what turned out to be a beautiful crisp spring morning with not a cloud to be seen and in the words of Brian Hanrahan 40years ago - ''I counted them all out and I counted them all back''. We also organised a charity quiz night in Bishop’s Waltham in aid of Wessex Heartbeat with 14 teams battling it out to be awarded the top prize and hoping not to be given the wooden spoon. £1,400 was raised and donated to Wessex Heartbeat with the Magnificent Magna, a team of fellow Rotarians from the Southampton Magna Rotary Club, triumphing over stiff opposition. To save their blushes I will not divulge which team’s members all received a congratulatory wooden spoon. Food Bank As I have reported previously, we continue to actively support the Meon Valley Food Bank both financially and with providing drivers from our own ranks for their weekly distribution runs. With the ever-rising cost of living, this is a charity which definitely need our support and directly helps our local community. If you would like to

help by donating food to this immensely important and very local charity, they accept food donations at Wickham Community Centre between 10am and noon every Monday. good Festival 2022 Good Festival (formerly Hampshire Country & Garden Festival) is a fun-filled day for all of the family hosted by the Hampshire Medical Fund. Set amongst the beautiful gardens of Bere Mill on the River Test in Whitchurch, the festival returns this year on Sunday 26th June.

Every penny from the festival goes towards the purchase of pioneering medical equipment for Basingstoke, Andover and Winchester NHS hospitals. This year, the Hampshire Medical Fund has a very special fund-raising target of £200,000 for the procurement of a state of the art AI (artificial intelligence) machine for interventional radiology. This machine allows minimally invasive, image guided procedures to target tumours in the lungs, kidneys & liver. There are only two of these machines in the entire United Kingdom, which makes it cutting edge technology in cancer treatment for The Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The festival launches on Saturday 25th June with an evening of sparkling wine, cocktails and canapés set against the backdrop of Bere Mill gardens. This will be followed by supper, a silent auction and a fast auction finale, accompanied by musical duo, The Canapés, on the guitar and violin. On Sunday, the doors open at 9.30am. Visitors are invited to step among the colourful festival

Winchester Cheese & Chilli Festival 2022 - 18th & 19th June

The Cheese and Chilli Festival is the only show in the UK which celebrates both Cheese and Chilli within a festival setting. Tunworth Cheese twice baked souffle

It's so good to see a growing number of local food producers making names for themselves. Stacey Hedges at The Hampshire Cheese Company makes Winslade and Tunworth, two delicious artisanal cheeses which can now be bought at several branches of the Co-op around Hampshire as well as Waitrose and independent delis and grocery stores. And further afield as far away as Singapore! Her present creamery will soon be replaced with a new and bigger one to meet the growing demand. Try my amazing double baked souffle recipe using Tunworth. It is easier than you might think and can be made a day or two ahead, ready to finish off in a hot oven, brown and bubbling, and it will be a showstopper I promise! My recipe serves 6 starter size.

Ingredients for Souffle

Butter the ramekins and sprinkle the inside with grated parmesan Fill a baking dish with hot water in the oven at 180 degrees. This is known as a Bain Marie which will help even cooking. Melt the butter gently and stir in the cornflour to form a roux. Gradually add the the milk and cream mixture until the sauce thickens slightly. Add the Tunworth to the mixture and stir over a gentle heat. The sauce should be smooth. Set aside to cool slightly. Separate the eggs and beat the egg yolks. Stir the yolks into the mixture. If it looks as though it is separating at this stage, don’t worry keep going! Whisk the egg whites to soft peaks and fold into the mixture. Season to taste. Gently fill the ramekins to the top and bake for twenty minutes until brown and risen. Allow to cool and turn onto a try. The souffles at this stage can be kept in the fridge for a couple of days or frozen.

Method for the first bake

Turn each souffle upside down into an ovenproof dish with the brown top at the bottom. Pour enough double cream to come about half way up the sides. Sprinkle grated parmesan onto the top and bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 15 mins until the sauce bubbles and the souffle is nicely glazed. Serve with a green salad and crusty bread.

Wickham Charity Beer Festival

The Meon Valley Lions were pleased to support the Wickham Charity Beer Festival by serving party goes with the huge selection of ales on the Friday plus providing burgers and sausages on the Saturday. This year we raised an impressive £750. In addition to this Wickham Charity Beer Festival kindly donated £1,000 specifically to assist with the upkeep of our minibus, which is used for local lunch, and other clubs, helping people to meet and socialise. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported and particularly Wickham Charity Beer Festival for much needed funds to maintain our minibus.

Lions were back over the Bank Holiday Weekend at the Bishops Waltham Charity Garden Fete - a brilliant day with over 400 sausages, burgers or bacon rolls eaten; we raised over £1,000.

East Meon Country Fair

We were also out 'Playing our Cards Right' at East Meon Country Fair - it was lovely to see families out and about enjoying themselves. These events are always as much fun for us at it is for those playing so if you’d like to join the fun, get in touch. We raised £85.00; at £1 a go, with two lucky winners, wining £10 each, we had lots of punters trying their luck.

Our fundraising provides us with much needed money to provide help to the many people who ask us for assistance - from broken washing machines to beds and bedding, we couldn’t do it without your support.

Swanmore Village Fete

Saturday 9th July from 12 noon Preparations are going well for our annual fete which will be held in the Swanmore Recreation Ground. One thing we’re really excited about is a Spitfire fly past, so don’t forget to put the date in your diary. In the meantime start grooming your ‘best friends’ to take part in the Dog Show. During the next few weeks, more details will be published on our Fete website page plus there will be social media postings, to keep you updated on developments.

Help Required!

The Lions’ Swanmore fete takes a lot of time and effort to plan and we need dozens of people to help us make the event work on the day. If you can volunteer for a few hours setting up the field, manning the gate or running a stall, we’d love to hear from you. Its great fun and who know, you might decide to become a member. At our recent Business Meeting Brian Donovan (105sc District Governor) presented some long service awards. Unfortunately some of our members were not able to attend: Ron Wilson for 40 years, Pete Meadows for 30 years, John Sharpe for 25 years, Pete and Diana Angelis, Dinah Weberstadt and Dick Cowles each for 10 years. Congratulations to all!

Bring the joy of singing into your life The Meon Voices Community Choir brings you music, fellowship and friendship, and is looking for new members to start in September 2022. Meon Voices is a happy and popular choir, which has been a valued part of the Meon Valley community since the early 1980’s. If you would like to bring the joy of singing into your life, there’s no need to audition and you don’t need to read music – if you love to sing and are prepared to make a bit of effort, that’s enough for this welcoming throng. Each member receives a set of musical scores for a wide variety of music (there really is something for everyone), plus all their music on Drop Box and on CD, so they can practice at home. The choir supports equality and diversity, is led very professionally by a highly qualified conductor, and is accompanied by a brilliant pianist.
