Welcome and thank you for joining us for Fargo AirSho 2019. The 70 volunteer members of the Fargo AirSho Committee have been working over a year to put on the show that you will see this year.
This year’s show is dedicated to the memory of Major General Darrol Schroeder, who served as Co-Chair of the Fargo AirSho since its founding in 1989. That year the Fargo AirSho featured the US Air Force Thunderbirds, as the 2019 show will for the first time in 30 years. A collection of the finest, including Mike Wiskus, Kent Pietsch, Kirby Chambliss and the Red Bull team, Jeff Boerboon, The Lindemanns, Sky Dive Fargo, a motor cycle jump team, and skid steer, will perform some routines never seen in our region.
In the past, the Fargo AirSho Committee has put over $600,000 back into the community, including over $300,000 into the Fargo Air Museum, while presenting wholesome, patriotic family entertainment. Thank you for helping us achieve that and our goals for the future.
ENJOY THE SHOW!

Greetings!
As Mayor of Fargo, it is my pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to everyone attending the Fargo AirSho on July 20 and 21, 2019 at Hector International Airport. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Demonstration Team will be headlining this year’s show. The last time they performed in Fargo was at the North Dakota Centennial AirSho in 1989. The Thunderbirds have showcased the pride and precision of the U.S. Air Force to millions of people in the United States and worldwide since 1953. The team currently flies six F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, demonstrating formations and precision aerobatics.
Other exciting performances at this year’s AirSho include: Red Bull Team Chambliss and the Red Bull Skydive Team; University of North Dakota graduate Jeff Boerboon and his YAK 110; Michael Wiskus and his Lucas Oil Pitts S-1-1B; North Dakota’s own Kent Pietsch and his single engine plane “Jelly Belly;” some of the best high-flying, death-defying motorcycle action and motorcross stunts by PiNN-iT FMX Riders; and new to this year’s show, Jake Hatch and his Black Sheep Skid, a skid-steer loader that Hatch puts through stunts with razor-edge precision and gravity-defying accuracy.
On behalf of all the citizens of Fargo, I hope you enjoy all of the weekend performances and take advantage of all our city has to offer. You will find many unique shops and fine eating establishments in Fargo and an abundance of services and activities that are of the highest quality and readily available to you.
Thank you for attending the Fargo AirSho. I know you will enjoy your time here.

What do you get when you combine two fairly ordinary aerobatic airplanes into one unique airframe and add a jet engine? You get an airplane with two piston engines, one jet engine, two fuselages, two cockpits, two tails, four main landing gear, and approximately two wings.
Built by master aircraft builder Dell Coller and flown by champion aerobatic pilot Jeff Boerboon, (pronounced “bourbon”), the Yak – 110 was created by combining two single-engine Yak – 55 airframes and a Lear 24 jet engine into one very strange looking, but incredibly innovative multi-engine
aerobatic aircraft. While the Yak – 110 may look strange, anyone who saw it fly this year at EAA AirVenture, or one of the handful of other airshow where it performed, was likely amazed at its incredible performance and innovative aerobatic capabilities..
Jeff didn’t start flying himself until 1988 when he was a student in the University of North Dakota’s Airway Science and Aircraft Systems Management
This Combination of 3 Engines Develops Over 6,000 Pounds of Thrust
degree program. He earned his ratings up through multi-engine instructor and flew his first aerobatics in the school’s CAP 10B While working as an instructor, he built about 300 hours in Super Decathlons doing spin, tailwheel, and aerobatic training.
After college, aerobatics took a back seat as he began pursuit of an airline career, first flying Grand Canyon air tours for two years before going to work for a regional airline. In 1999, he was hired by a major airline where he still flies today as a captain.

Mike’s air show career is a testimony of how dreams really can come true. As a 2002 U.S. National Aerobatic Champion, and a member of the 2004 U.S. Aerobatic Team, Mike has traveled the World with the same aircraft you will see him performing in at your air show. His excitement for aviation and willingness to share his experience with people around the country is nothing short of contagious in his attempt to help encourage kids of all ages, to not only dream, but to live their dreams and never give up!
Forty years later, Mike has accumulated more than 25,000 flight hours and has qualified in more than 40 aircraft. He keeps a very busy schedule as a full time air show pilot flying the Lucas Oil stunt plane April through November. “It is incredible to be part of the Lucas Oil Team. Their products as well as their integrity make what I do even more rewarding.”

Kirby Chambliss is one of the premier aerobatic pilots in the world. He is the 5 times US Aerobatic Champion and two-time Red Bull Air Race Champion. Chambliss has accumulated 13 medals in world aerobatic competition.
Apart from his participation in the Red Bull Air Race, Chambliss’ aerial talent has not gone unnoticed by the rest of the world. He’s been commissioned by governments and cities to perform amazing feats through urban and country landscapes, including cartwheeling a plane through a building in Mexico that has a big architectural hole through it. Or flying through a cave in China. Or through downtown Dallas for a citysponsored event that accidentally provoked 831 911 calls.

KENT PIETSCH
Kent Pietsch fell in love with flying when he was four years-old. Five decades later, his passion has not waned. Kent grew up in Minot, North Dakota.
Since 1973, Kent has performed his incredible aerobatic routine for millions of people at more than 400 shows that have taken him to quality venues throughout the United States. He flies an 800-pound Interstate Cadet with a 37-foot wingspan. The plane’s horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine can generate 90 horsepower and a G-force ranging from -3 to +5.
Kent loves to fly, but the audience is always his number-one priority. “If you can’t entertain, you have no business being out there”, he said. “The gratification is in knowing that people are enjoying themselves.”
Kent’s humble nature and willingness to interact with fans makes him a crowd favorite whenever he performs.

Perfect studied wingsuit-formations performed from almost 10,000 feet above the ground will increase the heartbeat of the crowd. Those precise flight maneuvers will be smoke escorted to receive an amazing demonstration of human flight. Due to professional training and meticulous preparations spectacular stunts in low altitude can be performed while respecting the highest standards of safety. Free fall as well as wing suit flying is brought to the spectators as close as possible.

United States Air Force Thunderbirds
Since 1953, the Thunderbirds have showcased the pride and precision of the United States Air Force. The Thunderbirds history has reflected the development of American air power from the team’s first aircraft, the Republic Aviation F-84G “Thunderjet”, to its current use of the Lockheed Martin F-16 “Fighting Falcon”. The 1982 show season was the team’s grand debut of the red, white and blue F-16 Fighting Falcon.
The official mission of the United States Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron is to “plan and present precision aerial maneuvers to exhibit the capabilities of modern, high-performance aircraft and demonstrate the high degree of professional skill required to operate those aircraft.”
Within that broad mission are five specific objectives:
• Support Air Force recruiting and retention programs
• Reinforce public confidence in the Air Force by demonstrating the professional competence of Air Force members
• Strengthen morale and esprit de corps among Airmen
The missions, objectives and goals of the Thunderbird can be summarized in one word: ambassadors. The team is a group of traveling spokespersons for the Air Force. Performing at public venues tells the Air Force story, often to people in communities that have little interaction with America’s military. There will always be those who have yet to experience what American Airmen can do; the Thunderbirds are the ambassadors who show them.
Being one of the public faces of the United States Air Force is a monumental responsibility. This distinction carries with it an expectation of excellence, particularly when representing fellow Airmen. Like any Air Force unit, the pressure to perform is real.
Fans of the team include people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds. That’s because the Thunderbirds message is universal. Whether the message is received by a five-year-old child or the leader of a foreign country, the Ambassadors in Blue demonstrate a clear example of America’s air power.

PAUL & JARROD LINDEMANN
Paul and Jarrod Lindemann are both fourth generation, commercially rated pilots who got their start in aviation and flying at a very young age. They grew up around a variety of aircraft, being active in the family aviation business. They both gained experience helping their dad, the late Dan Lindemann, with crop spraying in the summer months and aircraft maintenance in the winter months. Paul and Jarrod have thousands of hours logged in various aircraft and are both Airframe & Powerplant certified mechanics.
Paul’s aerobatic performance includes a Pitts S-2B, a 1985 twoplace that was factory built in Afton, Wyoming. It’s running a fuel injected 540 cubic inch Lycoming engine and spins a three blade MT propeller. This Pitts was originally blue and white, but in 2012 the Lindemanns fully restored, recovered and painted it a new green, black and white paint scheme.
Jarrod’s aerobatic performance showcases the Red Baron Stearman which was originally No. 5 of the aerobatic Red Baron Squadron team. This particular Stearman was with the squadron for the entire 28 years that the team performed in airshows and flew the lead at one time. This 1941 biplane was fully restored by the Lindemanns, taking a total of 11 months to finish the project.

2019 FARGO AIRSHO

A TRIBUTE TO Darrol Schroeder
While Darrol Schroeder made his home on the ground, the pilot’s heart and soul were always flying among the clouds.
Co-chair of the Fargo AirSho for 30 years, he was a passionate force for aviation. This year’s show is the first since his passing at the age of 88 in March 2019. We dedicate this weekend’s event to him.
Darrol had a distinguished military career, retiring from the U.S. Air Force as Major General, and was a partner in a successful farming operation that included crop dusting and aerial spraying for mosquitos. He was active in local civic organizations and served on the board of many organizations.
In addition to co-chairing the Fargo AirSho, he was instrumental in starting the Fargo Air Museum and served on its board for more than 20 years.
And Darrol did it all with care and cheer.
“He was the guy who was everyone’s friend,” said U.S. Air Force retired Maj. Gen. Alex Macdonald, a friend of Darrol’s since childhood. “He was an amazing individual to live the life he did without creating animosity. Everyone liked him.”
22 Fargo AirSho
Edited by: Terry Schroeder Scherling, MajGen/SES (Ret.)
Darrol was destined to soar.
As a high school student, he lived with his aunt in Fargo during the week. His father gave him $5 a week for spending money, which he promptly spent on flying lessons.
Over the years, Darrol flew more than 22,000 hours in more than 130 different types of military and civilian aircraft. He enlisted in the North Dakota Air National Guard in 1947 and graduated from North Dakota State University. He received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps.
He completed U.S. Air Force pilot training in 1954 and was assigned to Etain Air Base in France where he flew an F-86 fighter jet during the height of the Cold War. In 1957, he and his wife, Jean, returned to North Dakota where Darrol joined the Air National Guard and the family farm operation.
His daughter Terry Schroeder Scherling remembers spending summers at the family lake cabin. Her dad would work on the farm and crop dusting during the week and join the rest of the
family on weekends.
“Most people drove to the lake; my dad flew,” she says.
He retired from the Air National Guard in 1987, after 39 years of military service that included numerous military decorations and awards. He also was appointed assistant to the commander of U.S. Air Force in Europe.
In 1989, Darrol and Dick Walstad were named co-chairs of the Fargo AirSho. Together, they organized shows that drew both aviation enthusiasts and curious community members.
“It was a partnership that was unbelievable,” Dick said. “We had tough times and difficult decisions to make, but we were always on the same page.”
The air show’s early successes led to another idea: an air museum for the Fargo-Moorhead region.
“Once (Darrol) made up his mind, he was going to find a way to make it happen,” Dick said. “He had so many contacts and friends that he could pick up a phone, call somebody, and we could get
some things done.”
The museum’s first hangar opened in 2001. When Jackie Williams was named executive director of the Fargo Air Museum in 2016, Darrol was one of the first people she met.
“He was as comfortable visiting about aviation as he was conversing with national politicians,” she said. “He was the face of the air museum.”
Darrol flew high even among aviators. In 2005, the FAA presented him with the “Master Pilot” award. He was inducted into the North Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame and served on the nominating committee of the National Aviation Hall of Fame.
His passion for flight was contagious and with that passion, he inspired all.
When Darrol retired from the military, he invited Dick to make a few comments at a ceremony at the Pentagon. The words he shared then still apply today.
“He’s a man who walked with kings and flew with eagles,” Dick said.

AMERICAN B-25J MITCHELL “MISS MITCHELL”
“Miss Mitchell” is the pristine example of what a dedicated group of volunteers can accomplish. Donated to the Minnesota Wing of the Commemorative Air Force in the 1980’s, volunteers immediately began a complete ground-up restoration of this versatile medium bomber.
The B-25 placed itself in World War II history books on April 18, 1942 when 16 of the medium range bombers launched from the deck of an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean and bombed mainland Japan. Led by Lt. Col. James “Jimmy” Doolittle, America had begun to turn the tables on the Japanese.
The B-25J “Miss Mitchell” served in the 310th Bomb Group, 57th Bomb wing of the 12th Air Force in North Africa and Italy completing over 130 missions. Its legacy of no crew fatalities during all of its missions was a rare accomplishment.
Prior to taking command of the 8th Air Force in Europe in 1944, the 12th Air force was under the command of then Brigadier Jimmy Doolittle.
After a 12 year restoration by the Minnesota wing of the Commemorative Air Force, Miss Mitchell took her first flight on April 1, 1992- exactly 50 years to the day of the daring Doolittle raid.
Today, Miss Mitchell appears at air shows and special events throughout the United States and Canada.
The Commemorative Air force Minnesota Wing operates a History Flight program which gives you the opportunity to fly as a crew member on Miss Mitchell! For more information on this rare opportunity, go to website: http://www.cafmn.org

HIGH FLIGHT
In December 1941, Pilot Officer John G. Magee, a 19-year-old American serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force in England, was killed when his Spitfire collided with another airplane inside a cloud. Several months before his death, he composed his immortal sonnet “High Flight,” a copy of which he fortunately mailed to his parents in the U.S.A.
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
A nd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
O f sun-split clouds and done a hundred things
You have not dreams of wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence, hovering there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew,
A nd, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
-John Gillespie Magee Jr.

The 2019 Fargo AirSho is dedicated to the memory of Darrol Schroeder, who passed away in March. He was cochair of the Fargo Airsho since its inception in 1989. Schroeder had a stellar career in aviation as an Air Force pilot and later in the ND Air National Guard. Serving A total of 39 years in the military, Schroeder achieved the rank of Major General. His leadership, good humor and aviation know-how will be sorely missed by the AirSho Committee.
The Fargo AirSho was officially formed in 1989. That year, the United States Air Force “Thunderbirds” flight team performed. After 30 years, the Thunderbirds return to headline the 2019 AirSho.
This year marks the 13th AirSho that the 70- member volunteer
committee have organized. Special thanks to the AirSho Co-Chairs Dick Walstad and Mike Haugen, plus Helen O’Connor, the AirSho Executive Director.
The Fargo AirSho would not have been successful without the support of sponsors, advertisers and loyal patrons. Accolades to law enforcement, the ND Air National Guard and The Fargo AirMuseum.
Thanks to the Fargo Airport Authority whose cooperation is much appreciated to help make this event a success. In addition, the staff of FM Convention & Visitors Bureau were very helpful in assisting the Airsho Committee.
In summary, it was a team effort. Bravo!
