Home automation is a modern technology that allows you to control various systems in your home using your smartphone. It’s an efficient way to save energy and money. If you have a garden, it’s a great idea to consider home automation for optimizing plant watering and conserving drinking water.

How does it work?

Using a watering timer and several sophisticated sensors and algorithms, the system detects numerous data points and variables in real time, such as soil moisture and weather. Based on these readings, the system can adjust the irrigation in your garden to provide your plants with the precise

amount of water they need, and only when they need it. This means no more wasting water.

Moreover, you can also program the system to water your plants at the best times, such as early in the morning. Depending on the system you choose, you may be able to connect it to other sensors, such as a sunlight sensor and your rainwater collector or well. This allows you to set up personalized watering programs for different areas of your yard.

LEARNING TO PADDLEBOARD

is easier than it looks!

Paddleboarding is a great activity for people of all ages. It’s a total body workout that requires muscular strength, good balance and concentration. It’s also easy to learn! If you’re interested, take the plunge and follow these tips.

Get comfortable with the board

Start with a wide, long and thick board, which is more stable. Then, find a calm spot to start. Wade into the water up to your thighs and kneel in the middle of the board.

Paddle while kneeling until you feel comfortable with the movements. Then, switch to a squatting position by leaning forward on your hands and placing your feet where your knees used to be. If you feel stable, slowly stand up. Look straight ahead and keep your knees slightly bent.

Your feet should be parallel and shoulderwidth apart on either side of the handle.

Master the paddle

Position the paddle blade away from you. Place one hand on the T-bar at the top of the paddle and the other halfway down the shaft. To propel yourself, plunge the paddle as far forward into the water as possible and drag it back along the board by pushing your hand down into the T-bar at the top. Bring the paddle out of the water so it’s level with your feet, then start again. Do the opposite to slow down. After a few strokes, switch sides by reversing the position of your hands. To turn left, make a wide, semi-circle on the right side of the board and vice versa.

Now you know the basics! Don’t hesitate to take a few lessons before getting started.

RAIN GARDENS: stylish and ecological

Arain garden is a bed of stones and plants that captures rainwater, allowing it to slowly seep into the soil through infiltration. Here are some guidelines to follow when planning your own rain garden:

• Location. Your rain garden should be located at least 10 feet away from your home to prevent water from seeping into the foundation. It should also be in an area that receives full sun or part shade. Finally, avoid building your rain garden over any underground infrastructure.

• Depth. Your rain garden should be between four and eight inches deep. You must take the slope of your land into account when digging. The steeper the slope, the greater the depth. Additionally, making any necessary adjustments to ensure the garden is level is essential.

• Retention wall. Made of excavated soil or fill, this barrier acts like a wall to retain water in the garden. Mulch is recommended to prevent erosion.

• Plants and stones. You can cover the bottom of the rain garden with plants and river stones or pebbles. For best results, select native plants with well-developed root systems. Ask a horticultural professional for advice on which species are best suited to rain gardens.
