It’s Retirement Done Right

VILLAGE COOPERATIVE

Never before has home ownership been so easy. That’s because the Village Cooperative of Fargo is a community for active adults 62+ who want home ownership without maintenance, repairs or unexpected bills, and to be close to family and friends at an excellent value.

The Village Cooperative of Fargo is coming soon and will include 52 homes in one bedroom, two bedroom and two bedroom with den designs built specifically for active adults—working or retired. The homes range in size from approximately 900 sq. ft. to over 1,500 sq. ft. of one-level living space within in a three-story building built over secure underground parking.

“We realized over the years that our current house was too much work and upkeep. We didn’t find anything we liked until we heard about the Village Cooperative, says Judy Robertson, a

Village Cooperative member. “We found that living there allows us to live in comfort with neighbors like us who want more social opportunities, less work, and a return on our investment. We already feel more relaxed and secure about our future.”

The Village Cooperative is a community of like-minded adults who want to be active with other people their age, but not in assisted living. It will offer maintenancefree living with all the benefits of home ownership and none of the headaches, plus many unique amenities that are suited for both working and retired residents. At the Village Cooperative, you are in control— all in a secure setting—to enjoy the things that matter to you without the worries of upkeep or repair bills.

For more information about cooperative living and how it works, or specific details about the Village Cooperative of Fargo, please contact Kerry at (701) 997-2900.

Car tech for elderly drivers

It’s not uncommon for elderly drivers to feel less than confident on the road. Fortunately, there are now a host of automotive innovations that can make driving easier and safer.

Assistive technology

Most cars today come with driver assistance technology. This includes infrared parking assistance, cruise control, electronic stability control, cornering lights, blind-spot detection and other features that can help keep you safe. Some vehicles also come with a built-in eCall emergency service that allows drivers to directly communicate with emergency responders if needed.

Improved design

Automakers are tweaking vehicle design to make handles and knobs more ergonomic for people with limited dexterity, including individuals with arthritis. In addition, vehicles are now being designed with lower door sills, longer sun visors and easy-to-adjust seats and steering wheels for added comfort.

THE CAR OF THE FUTURE

Several countries have plans to improve travel for seniors by putting autonomous vehicles on the road. Self-driving shuttles, buses and cars will make it easier for passengers of all abilities to get to their destination.

When purchasing or leasing your next vehicle, make sure to look for the latest technological features available.

3 services offered in retirement homes

Are you planning to move into a retirement home but want to learn more about the services provided in these types of establishments? Here are three things offered by most seniors’ residences.

1. Food

The majority of retirement homes have a large dining room or common area where residents can meet, chat and eat. However, some facilities also offer flexible dining options for tenants with limited mobility that require extra care. For example, some retirement homes provide room service, in-room meals and snacks as well as shuttles to and from the grocery store.

2. Recreation

Some retirement homes have recreational facilities like a library, workshop or internet cafe. Moreover, some senior’s residences arrange weekly group activities like swimming, yoga, bocce ball, bingo,

bowling, movies, live performances, painting, gardening and more.

3. Health care

Many retirement homes offer around-the-clock care for residents who require extra assistance. For example, some facilities hire staff to help residents bathe, dress and manage their medication. Moreover, some senior’s homes offer in-suite doctors’ visits and physiotherapy sessions.

Contact the retirement homes you’re interested in to find out if they offer the services you need.

4 reasons why puzzles are great for seniors

Puzzles are a popular pastime for people of all ages, but for seniors, this activity has numerous health benefits. Here are four reasons to take up this hobby in your golden years.

1. Memory

Solving puzzles requires good mapping, dexterity and observation skills. Consequently, this hobby is excellent for improving and preserving memory by stimulating the brain.

2. Focus

Putting a puzzle together requires you to pay attention to the task at hand. This type of heightened concentration can improve your focus and help boost your short-term memory and other cognitive abilities.

3. Dexterity

Connecting puzzle pieces requires manual dexterity. Maintaining your

fine motor skills and coordination as you age is important for performing a variety of daily activities that can help you remain independent.

4. Relaxation

When solving a puzzle, you must focus. This allows you to escape your daily routine and can help you to relieve stress.

Just like the muscles in your body, you need to exercise your brain regularly to keep it fit. To stock up on puzzles, visit the stores in your area.

If you or a loved one are planning to move into a retirement home, it’s a good idea to tour several facilities before making a final decision. Here are five things to consider when visiting a senior’s residence.

1. The units

Tour the available units to find out if they include a kitchen, accessible bathroom, balcony and more. This way you can compare different suites and select one based on your budget and needs.

2. The atmosphere

Visit the retirement home’s common room and living area to observe the residents’ behavior. Do they seem happy and relaxed? You should also find out what kind of activities are available.

3. The amenities

Some retirement homes have amenities such as a hair salon,

swimming pool, theater, convenience store and restaurant. Make sure to tour these areas as well.

4. The neighborhood

Before or after your visit, walk around the neighborhood to see if it’s easy to access by public transit. You should also see if there are any interesting shops nearby and places where you can enjoy outdoor activities.

5. The meal plan

If you plan to use the retirement home’s food services, consult the menu to get an idea of the type of food they serve and if it meets your expectations.

Moreover, factors like the parking arrangements, available storage space and cleanliness of the premises can help guide your decision. If you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to go back for a second tour.

How to use a mobility scooter

Do you need a mobility scooter to help you get around? If so, here are a few tips for using one.

• Review the functions. Learn the location of the different buttons and try them out to understand how they work.

• Practice driving. In an open and uncluttered space, learn how to brake, pick up speed and steer around corners.

• Remain seated. When you drive your mobility scooter, practice remaining positioned in the middle of the seat. This will prevent you from leaning too far to one side, which could cause you to tip over.

• Engage freewheel mode. Mobility scooters usually have a freewheel mode that disengages the brakes and allows your mobility aid to be

pushed. However, it’s important to remember to put the scooter back in drive mode when it’s not in use.

• Drive in suitable areas. Only drive your scooter on sidewalks, in bike lanes and on the right side of the road. You should avoid driving on streets without a shoulder.

When purchasing a motorized mobility aid, it must have the mandatory equipment required by your region including brakes, lights, reflector strips and more. For personalized advice, talk to the sales associate at your nearest mobility aid store.

Travel perks and discounts for seniors

Having made it to their golden years, seniors enjoy not only the privilege of earned wisdom, but also a few perks that come with aging. Many adults who have reached a certain age are entitled to an array of discounts, which take into consideration seniors’ fixed retirement incomes. Discounts are available on various services, including many travel options.

Seniors have a lot of time to devote to recreational pursuits. This list of available travel discounts can help seniors get the most bang for their vacation bucks.

Airline tickets

Before booking a flight, it is worth investigating if a particular airline carrier offers senior discounts. The global pandemic has changed how some airlines do business, and many have faced significant adversity since early 2020. Airlines may offer more affordable flights to drum up business. In the past, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, British Airlines, and United Airlines have

offered various discounts for people ages 65 and older.

Ground travel

Flying isn’t the only mode of travel available. AARP partners with various car rental companies to offer senior discounts. Seniors also may be entitled to discounts of 5 percent or more on tickets from Greyhound, Amtrak, and Trailways. Seniors who live in metropolitan areas

4 tips for moving into a retirement home

Are you ready to move into a retirement home? If so, here are a few tips to ensure everything goes smoothly.

1. Plan ahead

Pick a moving date and find out whether your family can help you move or if you’ll need the assistance of professional movers. If you need to hire a moving company, make sure to compare prices and ask questions.

2. Sort through your possessions

Your new retirement suite will likely be smaller than your current abode. Consequently, it’s a good idea to sort through your possessions and get rid of anything you don’t need. If possible, get a floorplan of your new suite so you can determine if your furniture will fit and how to arrange it.

3. Keep an open mind

Prepare yourself mentally for

the move. Be willing to meet new people, make friends and experience new things. You can even ask for a list of activities and clubs you can join.

4. Take time off Moving can be tiring and stressful. Consequently, start preparing early and, above all, take time to rest and recharge.

Lastly, try to involve your family in the move and don’t hesitate to ask for help.

also may get reduced fares on public buses and trains through providers like New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Accommodations

Getting there is one thing, but seniors also can receive discounts on hotel stays or cruise cabins. AARP reports that many major hotel and motel chains offer senior discounts between 5 and 15 percent. Royal

Caribbean has offered senior discounts on select sailings and stateroom categories. Smarter Travel notes that most chains require travelers to book directly rather than through an online booking agency/ deal site to be eligible for discounts.

Dining out

Many restaurants, and national chains in particular, offer senior discounts with or without AARP membership. Applebee’s offers 10 to 15 percent off to those age 60 or older. Brick House Tap & Tavern, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Denny’s, IHOP, Outback Steakhouse, and many others provide discounts or special senior pricing.

Tours and more

Seniors also can speak with travel agents or booking services about discounts on sightseeing tours and other vacation excursions.

One of the perks of getting older is the chance to save money on travelrelated services.

How to talk to your parents about moving into a retirement home

Do you think it’s time for your mother or father to move into a retirement home? Here are a few tips on how to bring up this sensitive subject.

Gather information

Research different retirement homes in your area that offer the services your loved one needs. When you’re ready to talk to your parent, bring along information sheets and brochures from several facilities. If they can use the internet, you can also send them links to the associated websites.

Get the timing right

Don’t rush. Wait for the right time to bring up the subject of moving into a retirement home. However, you should mention the idea earlier rather than later so they can plan for the change.

Talk about your concerns but don’t unpack everything at once. Instead, break up the discussion over a few meetings.

Be patient

Your parent may not respond kindly when you bring up the topic of them moving into a retirement home. Try not to be discouraged and offer your support. It may take them time to get used to the idea. Eventually, they may recognize that moving into a retirement home is the right decision.

Finally, consider scheduling a meeting with a retirement home representative so your parent can learn more about these types of facilities and ask questions.

Elderly people with a visual impairment often require help with everyday tasks. If someone you love has become visually impaired in their old age, here are a few things you can do to help them maintain their independence.

1. Offer your assistance

A visual impairment can make it more challenging for your loved one to perform their daily activities. To help them, consider offering to complete the tasks they find most difficult.

2. Encourage communication

Let your loved one know you’re there for them and they can talk to you about their feelings. Listen to their needs so you can help them make any necessary changes.

3. Assess their home

You may want to suggest installing grab bars in your loved one’s home to prevent them from falling when getting out of the bed or shower. You should also go through their living space to ensure there aren’t pieces of furniture, rugs or accessories that could be a safety hazard.

If you make changes to your loved one’s living space, make sure you discuss it with them. However, it’s best to avoid drastic changes, as people with severe visual impairments rely on their memory to find their way around.

If your loved one needs additional help, consider reaching out to a home-care provider in your area.

game with an egg-hunting or seekand-find concept is also suitable.

Do you want to spoil your loved ones for Easter? If chocolate isn’t the ideal option, here are five gift ideas to consider.

1. A book

Give your little one a collection of Easter stories or a book starring a bunny. If you want to buy a gift for someone who loves baking, a cookbook is a great option.

2. A board game

Hen, chick and rabbit figurines and stuffed animals are great gifts for little ones. Additionally, these trinkets can be incorporated into your Easter decor.

5. Flowers

Bouquets of flowers and potted plants are simple gifts that show you care. Tulips, lilies, daffodils and hyacinth flowers are classic Easter blooms.

The award-winning, best-selling author of Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel returns with a novel of art, time, love, and plague that takes the reader from Vancouver Island in 1912 to a dark colony on the moon five hundred years later, unfurling a story of humanity across centuries and space.

Run, Rose, Run A Novel

Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal—an experience that shocks him to his core.

Two centuries later a famous writer named Olive Llewellyn is on a book tour. She’s traveling all over Earth, but her home is the second moon colony, a place of white stone, spired towers, and artificial beauty. Within the text of Olive’s best-selling pandemic novel lies a strange passage: a man plays his violin for change in the echoing corridor of an airship terminal as the trees of a forest rise

on the run, and determined to do whatever it takes to survive.

Every song tells a story.

She’s a star on the rise, singing about the hard life behind her.

She’s also on the run. Find a future, lose a past. Nashville is where she’s come to claim her destiny. It’s also where the darkness she’s fled might find her. And destroy her.

Run, Rose, Run is a novel glittering with danger and desire—a story that only America’s #1 beloved entertainer and its #1 bestselling author could have created.

around him.

When Gaspery-Jacques Roberts, a detective in the black-skied Night City, is hired to investigate an anomaly in the North American wilderness, he uncovers a series of lives upended: The exiled son of an earl driven to madness, a writer trapped far from home as a pandemic ravages Earth, and a childhood friend from the Night City who, like Gaspery himself, has glimpsed the chance to do something extraordinary that will disrupt the timeline of the universe.

A virtuoso performance that is as human and tender as it is intellectually playful, Sea of Tranquility is a novel of time travel and metaphysics that precisely captures the reality of our current moment.

7 things on your car you should check in spring

After a long, cold winter, you should inspect your vehicle and make sure it’s in good condition. Here are seven things to check.

1. Tires

Before installing your summer tires, assess the tread depth. If it’s less than 6/32 inches, invest in a new set. Once your summer tires are installed, inflate them according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Additionally, inspect your winter tires before storing them. If the wear is uneven, visit a mechanic for an alignment check.

2. Fluids

Depending on when your car was last serviced and the number of miles you drove over the winter, you may need to change the oil. Additionally, top up the coolant, brake fluid and windshield washer fluids.

3. Filters

Determine if the engine or cabin air filter is clogged with dirt. If so, clean or replace them.

4. Air conditioning

Don’t wait until there’s a heatwave to ensure your air conditioning system is working.

5. Windshield wipers

If applicable, swap your winter wiper blades for summer ones. Additionally, if your windshield wipers are cracked and worn, invest in a new set.

6. Bodywork

After thoroughly washing your vehicle, check for rust. If you notice any corrosion, repair it immediately.

7. Cabin and trunk

Clean the interior of your car, and make sure to organize your emergency kit, put away seasonal items and replace anything that’s outdated in your first aid kit.

Additionally, it’s a good idea to schedule a full inspection with your mechanic to ensure your car didn’t suffer any damage over the winter.

How to decorate your table for Easter

with your hands, try folding the napkins to look like rabbit ears.

Centerpiece

If you’re bringing family and friends together for an Easter meal, here are a few tips to help you decorate your table for the occasion.

Table linens

Find a pastel tablecloth or one with a chick, rabbit, egg or floral pattern. If you opt for a busy pattern, decorate minimally to prevent the table from looking overcrowded. If you choose a plain tablecloth, experiment with a colorful table runner or napkins. If you’re good

Spring flowers like tulips and daffodils make great centerpieces. You could also place a few colored eggs around the table or in small baskets. Don’t forget to put a chocolate at each place setting and decorate the table with candles and greenery.

Dishware

Easter is the perfect time to dust off your festive glasses and plates. Dishware with polka dots and flowers or glasses with handpainted landscapes and animals are ideal. If you have plates and bowls in a variety of bright colors, feel free to mix and match.

To find the perfect Easter decor, visit your local shops.

How to choose a walk-in bathtub

A walk-in bathtub can reduce your risk of falling and make your personal hygiene routine easier to manage. Here’s what you need to do to choose the right model.

Determine your needs

There are many different types of walk-in bathtubs. To narrow down your choices, you must first determine if you require a model that’s wheelchair accessible, has a low edge or allows you to sit or lie down. In addition, the width of the door and the direction it opens, either in or out, should be key considerations.

Consider size and comfort

When choosing a walk-in tub, it’s important to think about the size and shape of your bathroom. The dimensions of the available space will allow you to determine which models will work best. In any case, measuring your bathroom

will prevent you from purchasing a bathtub that doesn’t fit.

Select the required accessories

In addition to the tub itself, you may want to consider installing your bathtub with water jets, mobility aids, a retractable bench, a quickdrain system, a non-slip coating or an anti-scald valve.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask a bathtub retailer for recommendations. After reviewing your needs, they’ll be able to suggest a model that meets your requirements.

Easter traditions around the world

Bermuda

Celebrants create and fly homemade kites on Good Friday Kitefest, which features bold, geometric designs. It’s also traditional to eat codfish and hot cross buns during Holy Week. On Easter Sunday, the faithful participate in sunrise services on various Bermuda beaches.

Costa Rica

Costa Ricans take Holy Week and Easter quite seriously. Each town hosts parades and processions during Holy Week, providing dramatic re-enactments of Jesus’ journey through Jerusalem to his crucifixion and resurrection.

England

Good Friday visitors to Trafalgar Square can see a classic dramatization of Jesus’ resurrection. “The Passion of Jesus” is a 90-minute performance that attracts thousands of visitors.

Israel

Israel is a melting pot of both Jewish and Christian faithful. Easter is a solemn celebration here. In Old Jerusalem, faithful pilgrims and priests walk the Via Dolorosa, which is the same path that Jesus took on the day he was crucified. The Way of the Cross, which is what the procession is called, is among the most amazing sights in the world.

Italy

Easter is special in Italy and particularly in Vatican City, the home of the Pope. The Pope holds a special mass on Easter in Saint Peter’s Square, which traditionally draws huge crowds. Elsewhere in Italy, masses take place at area churches and many towns host parades and other celebrations.

Easter is a special day for Christians across the globe. While the highlight of Easter celebrations are the religious events, particularly the vigils and church services, Easter fanfare sometimes stretches beyond church walls.

The following are some Easter traditions across the globe. Travelers should confirm the festivities are still on as COVID-19 restrictions continue to be put in place in various locales.

France

Many people visit the famed Notre-Dame Cathedral to hear its bells toll throughout Easter Sunday. A fire destroyed a portion of the cathedral roof in 2019 and repairs are still underway. There also are Paris Easter egg hunts. Parisians and tourists also can visit La Sainte Chapelle, which offers Easter concerts consisting of classical music and choral singers.

Mexico

Holy Week reenactments take place in devout areas of Mexico. Residents in other areas may take part in silent processions through town, or by visiting 12 churches in 12 days.

Easter is a time of celebration and reflection in various parts of the world.

Simple tips to Combat Seasonal Affective Disorder in Seniors

Feeling blue in the middle of winter isn’t just because it’s cold and dark outside most of the time.

There’s a medically-recognized condition that explains why you might not feel like getting out of bed in the morning, or why you’re craving sweets and breads instead of healthier foods.

It’s Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it affects more than 10 million Americans each year.

Norman E. Rosenthal, MD, a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical School and Medical Director of the Capital Clinical Research Associates, says,“Every year, as the days become short and dark, people with SAD develop a predictable set of symptoms. They slow down and have a hard time waking up in the morning. Their energy level decreases, they tend to eat more, especially sweets and starches, and they gain weight. Their concentration suffers, and they withdraw from friends and family.”

Elders who experience seasonal changes in mood can have more intense symptoms due to isolation from loved ones, less mobility and even cognitive deficits.

Common Signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

According to Mayo Clinic, SAD might go away as the seasons change, but they are serious. Here are some common symptoms from Mayo:

• Feeling listless, sad or down most of the day, nearly every day

• Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed

• Having low energy and feeling sluggish

• Having problems with sleeping too much

• Experiencing carbohydrate cravings, overeating and weight gain

• Having difficulty concentrating

• Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilty

• Having thoughts of not wanting to live

What to do about it

Sometimes it’s just not feasible or safe to go for that walk outside because it’s too cold or the ground is too slippery with ice. Or the weather is so treacherous that traveling in a car or bus to a gym facility is just a bad idea.

At the same time, the weather can be such a bummer, it’s just hard to want to be very active in the first place. While it’s

definitely OK to reduce physical activity at times, exercise is one of the best ways to beat the winter blues.

So while you may have some symptoms of SAD, keep exercise on the top of your list to help kick symptoms to the curb. Meantime, here are some other, simple ways to prevent or reduce SAD if it’s affecting you or someone you love.

IMPORTANT: Talk with your health care team before introducing new supplements, foods or activities into your daily wellness routine.

Tip #1: Up your Vitamin D

Also known as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is both a nutrient we digest and a hormone our bodies make naturally. Vitamin D improves bone health, energy and mood, and also prevents a slew of diseases.

People who live in northern climates are often deficient in this vitamin, especially during the winter when there’s more dark hours than daytime.

Unfortunately, the best way to get vitamin D is through sun exposure. The next best way is through supplements you can buy from a trusted nutrition source, like Swanson Health.

If you’d like to try and get more vitamin

D through the foods you eat, here are your best bets:

• Cod liver oil

• Salmon

• Swordfish

• Tuna fish

• Sardines

• Beef liver

• Egg yolk

• Fortified milk, orange juice and cereals

Tip #2: Set up light box therapy devices

Because people who live in northern climates lack adequate sunshine in winter, many health care practitioners recommend supplementing natural light with light therapy in the form of light boxes.

Also known as phototherapy, light box therapy is also a common practice in many office environments these days where employees also don’t get enough sunshine to cheer them up.

Tip #3: Try diffusing essential oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated tinctures made from flowers, fruit, wood, grasses and other elements found in nature. Cultures across the world have used essential oils for thousands of years to help treat common ailments, from earaches to anxiety.

Today, essential oils are enormously popular and come in a variety of preformulated blends based on need. They smell amazing and have many healing benefits, as well.

To help boost your mood, try adding citrus scents, like lemon and orange, to an essential oil diffuser. Use the diffuser in rooms where you spend a lot of time and enjoy the pleasant scents that can restore your sense of well-being on those down days of winter.

Oils that are great for winter months:

• Lavender oil

• Citrus oils (bergamot, lemongrass, sweet orange, grapefruit)

• Cedarwood

• Peppermint

• Frankincense

Tip #4: Socialize

Much like getting exercise feels like a difficult task you don’t want to do, especially when you’re feeling down, socializing is one of those activities that has a way of boosting your mood (even when you’d rather stay in bed where it’s warm).

Simple ways to socialize that can help SAD symptoms:

• Set a 15-minute phone date with a friend or loved one

• Chat on Facebook Messenger with a friend

• Make a pie and coffee date with a neighbor

• Write or type a letter to a friend

• Sign up for a yoga class

• Play Scrabble after dinner

Tip #5: Ask for help

Perhaps the most important (and most difficult) tip on the list is to seek help if you’re feeling super down. There are prescription medications that can help alleviate the clinical symptoms of SAD, including certain antidepressants. Talk with a trusted loved one, friend or health care team member about how you’re feeling.

Moods come and go, of course. But when bad feelings stick around longer than you’d like, it’s time to take action.

Not only will you improve your day-today wellness, but you’re taking action for better long-term health as you strive to grow bolder in these amazing later decades of your life.

Be well and healthy!
