Thanksgiving etiquette 101
Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Time to brush up on your etiquette before the big turkey day arrives! Here are five golden rules.
• RSVP in a timely manner. Let them know whether you’ll be attending the Thanksgiving feast or not. Your host needs to know how many people to expect so that they can plan and prepare accordingly and avoid any last-minute surprises.
• Offer to bring something. Even if your host insists they have everything covered, offer to contribute a dish or a beverage. It doesn’t have to be elaborate; it could be as simple as a homemade dessert or a nice bottle of wine.
• Be on your best behavior. Remember your manners at the Thanksgiving table. Avoid putting your elbows on the table and resist the temptation to constantly
check your phone or take photos of your meal for social media. Thanksgiving is a time to connect with family and friends.
• Be on time. Arriving on time is a gesture of respect for your host and the other guests. It ensures you don’t miss out on the pre-feast snacks and the opportunity to catch up with everyone before the meal.
• Help clean up. After enjoying a wonderful meal, offer to help with the clean-up. Your host has already done a lot to prepare the feast, so pitching in with the dishes or tidying up the dining area shows your appreciation for their hard work.
Finally, a simple thank-you can go a long way, but taking the time to call or write a heartfelt note to your host after the event will truly show your appreciation for their efforts in hosting a memorable Thanksgiving gathering.
2 expert tips for safe online holiday shopping
NEWSPAPER TOOLBOX
The holiday season is fast approaching, and online shopping is becoming increasingly popular among consumers. However, some older individuals are less comfortable with this new method of shopping, and hackers often view it as an opportunity to exploit them. Keep these two tips in mind to ensure you stay safe while shopping online:
Beware of misleading advertising Exercise caution with ads promising big discounts or miraculous products. Scammers often use these tactics to direct you to fake sites and steal your personal information. Remember, the site isn’t secure if you don’t see
the padlock symbol or “https” in the address bar. Close the page and go to another site.
Identify payment traps
Are you ready to move from your virtual shopping cart to the checkout page? Be wary if you’re asked to pay before confirming your purchase or if you’re required to complete the transaction via a pop-up window. After making a purchase, watch your credit card statement closely to ensure the retailer’s name matches the transaction. If you’re unsure, contact your banking institution to clarify the situation.
You can shop online with peace of mind this holiday season by following these tips. Consider shopping for gifts on the websites of your local businesses.
Charitable Christmas presents that make a difference
Charitable Christmas presents that make a difference
Are you looking for a different way to give presents this year? Consider these suggestions for gifts that give back.
Donate to your loved one’s favorite charity
Make a meaningful impact by donating to a charity that holds a special place in your loved one’s heart. For example, consider donating in their name to organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund, Save the Children or a local animal shelter. You can even support a specific cause that aligns with their passions.
Dedicate trees or green space in your loved one’s name
Give the gift of sustainability by dedicating trees or a plot of woodland in your loved
one’s name through organizations like the Arbor Day Foundation. This present will help combat deforestation and create a legacy in honor of your loved one.
Sponsor a family in need in your loved one’s name
Spread joy and goodwill on behalf of your loved one by supporting a family facing hardship. You can connect with a local charitable fund or an international program like Save the Children or UNICEF. These organizations provide essential resources and support to people in need during the holiday season.
You can also buy physical gifts from a local non-profit or free-trade shop. Look for handmade jewelry, artisanal crafts or organic goods that make good gifts and directly benefit communities and artisans around the world.
4 gestures of love and sharing to brighten the Christmas of the less privileged
Are you aware of your privileges, such as good health and a goodpaying job? Do you want to express your gratitude by bringing comfort to people less fortunate than you this holiday season? Use these four ideas as inspiration.
• Volunteer. Plenty of organizations need “helping hands” in the run-up to the festive season. You can wrap toys for underprivileged children, cook meals in a community kitchen for financially vulnerable families or collect food for Christmas hampers. You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to getting involved in your area!
• Visit someone in the hospital. Spending Christmas in the hospital is tough. You could bring a little joy to someone in the hospital by visiting them on December 24 or 25. Bring them a greeting card, a few sweets or a gift. Take advantage of your visit to do an activity with them like walking down the corridor and chatting, playing cards or watching a Christmas movie.
A HOSPITAL DESIGNED FOR RECOVERY
• Lend a hand. Do you have a few hours to spare in your busy schedule? Use your free time to spread happiness
and gratitude around you. For example, you could show your generosity by clearing snow from an older person’s driveway, helping someone with limited mobility put up their outdoor decorations or buying groceries for an exhausted caregiver — the possibilities are endless!
• Invite someone over for Christmas Eve. For various reasons or circumstances, such as divorce, moving, illness and work, someone in your circle may be spending Christmas alone. Whether it’s a family member, neighbor, colleague or friend, open your arms and home to them. Invite them to celebrate Christmas Eve or Day with you. Your hospitality is sure to warm their hearts!
No matter how big, acts of mutual aid and solidarity can make all the difference in making Christmas a happy time for those less fortunate. What kind gestures will you make this year?
Giving out warm clothing to people without homes, sponsoring a newcomer family, sending greeting cards to nursing home residents, donating to a worthy cause and more. Whatever your way of giving, don’t hesitate to encourage your loved ones to get in on the action!
How to communicate effectively with someone who has Alzheimer's
November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in the United States, a time to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and support the millions of Americans living with it. Do you have a loved one affected by the disease? Here are a few tips to help you communicate with them more effectively.
• Maintain a calm environment. Reduce background noise and distractions to help your loved one focus on the conversation. Speak in a calm, gentle voice and maintain eye contact to keep them engaged.
• Use simple language. Use clear, straightforward sentences. Avoid complex questions or statements that might confuse the person. It’s helpful to ask yes-or-no questions or offer choices between two options to make it easier for them to respond.
• Be patient and listen. Allow extra time for your loved one to process
information and respond. Don’t interrupt or rush them. Showing patience can reduce their stress and make communication more effective.
• Try non-verbal cues. Utilize nonverbal communication such as gestures, facial expressions and touch. These cues can often convey more than words and help reinforce your message.
• Reminiscence. Discuss memories and familiar topics. Talking about well-known subjects can help the person with Alzheimer’s feel more comfortable and engaged.
• Use validation and reassurance. Validate your loved one’s feelings and provide reassurance. Affirmations can help them feel understood and reduce any anxiety they may be feeling about the conversation.
Above all, stay positive, ignore mistakes and focus on what they can do, rather than what they can’t. Using these strategies, you can make your interactions with your loved one more meaningful. For more information, visit alzfdn.org.

3 myths and facts about menopause
Menopause, a stage in a woman’s life marked by normal hormonal changes, is still plagued by several erroneous beliefs. Increasingly, initiatives aim to demystify menopause and frame it as a moment of transition rather than a dreaded step toward mortality. Want to find out more? It’s time to debunk these stubborn myths.
“It lowers libido”
Although menopause is often accompanied by symptoms that can impact sexuality, it doesn’t mean the end. A woman’s sexual response may change with respect to arousal and climax, but desire doesn’t disappear. In other words, a menopausal woman’s sexuality doesn’t go away, but it can change.
“It causes depression” Many people still associate menopause
with mood swings or depression. However, menopause isn’t an illness that needs to be cured. The hormonal changes associated with this transition can influence a woman’s mood or stress levels, but these symptoms gradually resolve themselves. Mental health remains a separate issue.
“It leads to weight gain”
Weight gain is due to the normal agerelated slowing of metabolism — which applies to men, too — and is not caused by menopause. A focus on healthy eating and regular exercise remains the most effective way to limit weight gain.
Menopause doesn’t mark the end of an active and fulfilling life! Consult a health professional if you have any questions about menopause.

From Here to the Great Unknown: A Memoir
by Lisa Marie Presley (Author), Riley Keough (Author)
PRODUCT DETAILS
Hardcover | $21.49
October 8, 2024 | 304 Pages
In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir.
A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved.
Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them. About getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran toward his body on the floor. About living in Los Angeles with her mother, getting sent to school after school, always kicked out, always in trouble. About her singular, lifelong relationship with Danny Keough, about being married to Michael Jackson, what they had in
common. About motherhood. About deep addiction. About ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother’s wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world.
To make her mother known.
This extraordinary book is written in both Lisa Marie’s and Riley’s voices, a mother and daughter communicating—from this world to the one beyond—as they try to heal each other. Profoundly moving and deeply revealing, From Here to the Great Unknown is a book like no other—the last words of the only child of an American icon.
The Restless Wave: A Novel of the United States Navy (Scott Bradley James)
by Admiral James Stavridis USN
PRODUCT DETAILS
Hardcover | $24.65
October 8, 2024| 400 Pages
Scott Bradley James arrives in Annapolis, Maryland, as a plebe in the class of 1941 without a terribly good idea why he wants to be a naval officer, other than that his father was a sailor, and he wants to see the world, whatever that means. Scott and his roommate become fast friends, and, after surviving scrapes of their own making, the two fetch up at Pearl Harbor. War is brewing, and their class has graduated early. They have been sent to battle stations.
Admiral James Stavridis is an acclaimed novelist, a decorated military leader, and a great student of military history. He draws on it all to capture the experience of being storm-tossed by the bloody first years of the Second World War. Scott Bradley James is a talented young
officer, but he has a lot to learn. And war will have a lot to teach him.
The Restless Wave offers a gripping account of the U.S. Navy’s astonishing progress through the first three years of the war in the Pacific, from Pearl Harbor through to Midway, Guadalcanal, and the Coral Sea. A story of character under pressure in the harshest of proving grounds, it is written with careful fidelity to the truths of war that have made sea stories essential to the art of storytelling since Odysseus.

How to help ease the pain of the first Christmas without a loved one
If you’ve recently lost a loved one, it’s normal to feel a little down as Christmas approaches. Grief has no miracle cure, but these tips may help you feel a little better:
• Respect your physical and psychological limits. For example, you may want to explain to your relatives that you’d prefer to be invited to their celebration this year, rather than hosting the gathering at home.
• Establish a soothing ritual in memory of your loved one. For example, you could play their favorite Christmas song or hang a tree ornament to remember their greatest passion. Take time to raise a toast to them with their favorite drink, visit their grave or observe a minute of silence.
• Take a moment to share beautiful memories and look at photos of your loved one with people who knew and loved them. Remember that you have every right to cry; it’s a natural and healthy reaction.
Finally, exercise self-compassion and avoid isolating yourself. If the pain of grief doesn’t subside after several months, seek professional help from a doctor, psychotherapist or support group.

Seniors, get some quality boots before winter sets in!
The cold season has arrived, and the first snowfall can quickly turn the sidewalks into slippery paths of ice. To reduce the risk of injury while walking, older adults are well advised to have boots that are both comfortable and safe. Get a grip on these options:
Boots with built-in crampons
Several boot models have small studs, or cleats, integrated into the sole. These studs are usually detachable, so you can easily adjust your footwear in response to the weather conditions and replace them when needed.
Non-slip models
These boots boast wider soles that provide excellent grip on icy surfaces, eliminating the need for crampons. They're designed
with the same technology found in topquality winter tires. They’ll keep you comfortable and warm on your winter walks.
Many types and styles of boots are available to fit your budget and walking habits. Visit your local footwear retailer to find the right pair for you.
Studded soles
If you enjoy walking and don't mind the elements, you can buy detachable studded soles that fit almost any boot or shoe. These are particularly good in challenging conditions. However, make sure you can easily remove them indoors, as they can be slippery on surfaces like ceramic or wood.
