Heather's House

Along-time dream for Hospice of the Red River Valley is approaching reality as Heather’s House, North Dakota’s first freestanding hospice house, nears completion. Named in honor of Heather Butler, a dedicated long-time volunteer and supporter, this groundbreaking facility is set to make a profound, multi-generational impact, thanks to the generous support from the community.

Heather’s House is designed to fulfill a special need within our region, offering a serene and supportive environment for end-of-life care. As Barbara Karnes, author of Gone From My Sight: The Dying Experience, notes, “Dying isn’t a medical event. It is a social and communal event.” This philosophy is at the heart of Heather’s House, which aims to create a space where patients and their families feel honored, respected, supported, cared for and loved while living this chapter of life.

Heather’s House will feature:

• A Home-Like Environment: With 18 patient rooms designed to feel like home, Heather’s House will provide around-the-clock care, relieving pain and symptoms while maintaining a comforting atmosphere. About half of those receiving care here are anticipated to return home.

• Specialized Care: Heather’s House will cater to the needs of all who come, including specialized care for those with advanced dementia symptoms. Care for our younger patients is unique as well, where pediatric hospice care embraces concurrent care as children receive curative and hospice services.

• Family Support: Designed to accommodate families, Heather’s House will include spaces for children and teens, a patient spa, chapel, theatre and a children’s grief and playroom. Heather’s House will also offer support and grief counseling following the loss of a loved one.

• Caregiver Support: Heather’s House will offer respite care for caregivers, providing a necessary break and a chance to rejuvenate.

• Administrative Wing: Heather’s House will be home to our staff where the daily operations of Hospice of the Red River Valley will be conducted.

• Outdoor Spaces: The 55,000 square-foot facility will sit on 11 acres, featuring walking paths, a large pond with a fishing dock and ample outdoor spaces for families to create lasting memories.

Heather’s House will offer a warm, inviting space for families to come together, share meals and reminisce. Whether strolling along the pond or through the garden, or grandchildren fishing with their grandparents while sharing stories, Heather’s House will celebrate life and provide a cherished environment for making extraordinary memories.

For those preferring to spend their last days in a setting other than their home, Heather’s House will offer a warm and inviting environment to navigate this challenging time. Financially, the respite (caregiver support) and general inpatient (short-term aggressive symptom management) level of care are both included as a benefit with Medicare/Medicaid and most private insurance coverages.

“Every family, every community member, is going to be affected. Whether it’s today, tomorrow, next week or next year, Hospice and/or Heather’s House is going to be a direct part of every person in this community’s life at some point or another. It’s inevitable. It’s much needed. It’s going to be fantastic,” says Heather Butler, General Campaign Co-Chair. “It’s going to change lives for so, so many families and individuals and I’m very excited to be a part of it.”

A community celebration with a ribboncutting ceremony, open house and tours will be planned once construction is complete. In the meantime, the public is encouraged to stay connected by following Hospice of the Red River Valley on social media, subscribing to our newsletter or directly reaching out with any questions. Continued support, whether through volunteering, sharing the mission or financial contributions, remains vital as Hospice of the Red River Valley looks to serve the community for many years to come.

“Nearing the end of life often brings feelings of uncertainty and can be a frightening and confusing time for individuals and their families. Heather’s House brings a new opportunity for endof-life care to our area. Families will feel at home in this warm, inviting place. They will be able to spend time on what is most important to them, knowing they are surrounded by a loving community of competent professionals and volunteers caring for their needs,” says Steve and Kathy J., community supporters.

Heather’s House is set to be a beacon of compassion and care, reflecting the strong community spirit that made it possible.

5 side hustles to spice up your retirement

Retirement is a time for relaxation, but many retirees crave the extra income or social interaction that comes with a side hustle. Here are five ideas to get you started:

• Share your wisdom. Become a consultant in your old field. Leverage online platforms or reach out to your former network for freelance gigs.

• Become a creative maestro. Do you have a knack for crafting or baking? Turn your hobby into a business. Sell your creations at local craft fairs or online through platforms like Etsy.

• Monetize your space. Do you have

a spare room or an unused driveway? Rent it out! Online platforms connect you with renters seeking temporary or long-term stays.

• Become a local guru. Offer walking tours or historical lectures about your community. Leverage your local knowledge to share its hidden gems with curious visitors.

• Tutor or mentor. Do you have a passion for teaching? Tutor students or offer mentorship to those seeking career guidance. Your experience can be invaluable to the next generation.

Remember, retirement is a chance to explore new ventures and keep your mind and body active. What will your side hustle be?

“They supported me as her full-time caregiver... It was the emotional support I felt from them. It felt like they were friends.”

5 essential estate planning documents you need as a senior

Estate planning is crucial for seniors to safeguard their assets and ensure their wishes are respected. Here are five vital estate planning documents you should have:

• Last will and testament. Your will dictates how your assets and property are distributed after your death. Local laws determine asset distribution without a will, potentially conflicting with what you want.

• Living will (advance health care directive). Your living will outlines your medical treatment preferences if you become incapacitated. It covers decisions on life-sustaining treatments, organ donation and medical interventions, guiding healthcare providers and loved ones.

• Financial power of attorney. This

document appoints a trusted individual to manage your financial affairs if you cannot do so. It ensures bills are paid, investments are managed and financial obligations are met in your absence.

• Beneficiary designations. These designate individuals who will receive specific assets, such as retirement accounts or life insurance proceeds, upon your death. Keeping beneficiary designations current ensures your assets pass directly to your chosen beneficiaries, bypassing the probate process.

• Revocable living trust. You transfer ownership of assets to the trust while alive, avoiding probate upon your death. Trust terms specify asset distribution, providing privacy and efficiency in estate settlement.

Seek guidance from legal and financial professionals to help you create a comprehensive estate plan tailored to your needs.

5 prostate cancer risk factors: what puts men at a higher risk?

Prostate cancer remains one of the most widespread forms of cancer among men worldwide. While the exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown, several risk factors may increase your likelihood of developing this disease. Here are five:

• Age. The most significant risk factor for prostate cancer is age, with the risk increasing significantly after 50. Most prostate cancer cases are diagnosed in men over the age of 65.

• Family history and genetics. Men with a family history of prostate cancer, particularly in first-degree relatives such as a father or brother, are at higher risk. Additionally, specific inherited gene mutations, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, commonly associated with breast and ovarian cancers in women, can also increase the risk of prostate cancer in men.

• Race and ethnicity. African

American men have a significantly higher risk of developing prostate cancer compared to men of other racial or ethnic backgrounds. They’re also more likely to develop more aggressive forms of the disease.

• Lifestyle factors. Certain lifestyle habits, such as a diet high in fat and red meat, obesity and lack of physical activity, have been linked to increased risk of prostate cancer. Conversely, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and healthy fats may help reduce the risk.

• Environmental exposures. Exposure to certain environmental factors, such as Agent Orange or arsenic, may increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a perfect time to discuss your risk factors with a healthcare provider and to get screened. Regular testing, including prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests and digital rectal exams, is crucial for early detection.

Bethany accredited by The Joint Commission

Bethany Retirement Living has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Nursing Care Center Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. Bethany is the first North Dakota facility to receive the Joint Commission accreditation. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care. Bethany’s Transitional Care Unit was also recognized by earning Post-Acute Care Certification.

Bethany Retirement Living underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review spring of 2024. During the visit, a team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with Nursing Care Center standards spanning several areas including emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention and control, leadership,

medication management and rights and responsibilities of the individual.

The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with health

care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. They are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help health care organizations measure, assess and improve performance. The surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

“As a healthcare accreditor, The Joint commission works with healthcare organizations across care settings to inspire safer and higher quality of care that is more equitable and compassionate,” says Ken Grubbs, DNP, MBA, RN, executive vice president of Accreditation and Certification Operations and chief nursing officer, The Joint Commission. “Through collaborating on innovative solutions and evidence-based resources and tools, The Joint Commission helps drive improvement while maintaining accountability through our leading survey methods and standards. We commend Bethany Retirement Living for its commitment to advance safety, quality, equity and compassion for all patients.”

Shawn Stuhaug, President/CEO of Bethany Retirement Living said, “I salute our nursing leadership team and all of the Bethany employees who provide care of all kinds to residents and patients at Bethany. The Joint Commission application and assessment process is interdisciplinary, thorough and detailed and gave us a unique opportunity to review our practices to identify what we do well and to pinpoint areas where we can provide even better care to those who live at Bethany Retirement Living.”

Bethany Retirement Living was founded in Fargo in 1939 and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Bethany operates two campuses in Fargo and provides high-quality care to the elderly in skilled nursing, memory care, rehabilitation, transitional care, assisted living, basic care, senior apartments, personal care programs, and home care.

How older adults can manage chronic pain

Managing chronic pain requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both physical and emotional well-being. Here are some strategies to help older adults cope with chronic pain:

• Medication management. Work closely with your healthcare provider to develop a medication plan that effectively manages your pain while minimizing side effects and risks.

• Exercise and physical activity. Engage in regular physical activity tailored to your abilities and preferences. Lowimpact exercises such as walking, swimming, and tai chi can help improve your strength, flexibility and mood while also reducing pain and stiffness

• Mind-body techniques. Explore mind-body techniques like mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises and guided imagery to promote relaxation, reduce stress and enhance pain management.

• Supportive therapies. Consider complementary and alternative therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic care and herbal supplements. Talk to your healthcare provider before trying new treatments to ensure they’re safe.

• Emotional support. Address the emotional impact of your chronic pain by seeking support from friends, family members or support groups. Sharing experiences, expressing emotions and learning coping strategies can help you better manage pain-related stress and anxiety.

• Lifestyle modifications. Make lifestyle changes that support pain management, like maintaining a healthy diet, getting adequate sleep, practicing good posture and avoiding activities that exacerbate pain.

Work closely with your healthcare providers to develop an individualized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs and preferences while maximizing benefits and minimizing risks.

Providing peace of mind

to

help you honor the memory of your loved ones

NEWSPAPER TOOLBOX

Talking about death is a part of life. Whether you want to spare your loved ones from having to make difficult decisions at the time of your death or you’re responsible for arranging the funeral of a loved one, funeral homes are essential partners for peace of mind.

Various services

In addition to embalming, cremation and burial, funeral homes offer a wide range of services, including:

• Writing and publishing obituaries

• Designing and printing souvenir documents, such as thank-you cards and bookmarks

• Hosting the ceremony

• Setting up catering services

• Preparing tribute videos

• Handling pre-arrangements

• Providing a guest book for visitors to sign

• Renting audiovisual equipment

• Providing advice and referrals regarding aspects like administrative and legal considerations

• Registering the death with the municipality

• Allocating a plot in the columbarium or cemetery

• Providing comfortable meeting spaces for small or large groups

For a respectful, humane and personalized experience, put your trust in a local funeral establishment. Contact the funeral home’s team to schedule a meeting and learn more about their services.

Ideas for remembrance events

Honoring a deceased loved one through an annual event can provide a meaningful way to keep their memory alive and help families heal. Here are four ways to pay tribute to your loved one annually:

• Start a memorial garden to create a beautiful and tranquil space for family and friends to remember and honor a loved one. You can host an annual butterfly release ceremony, providing a poignant visual tribute or establish a “memory tree,” where family members can hang written memories or photos on the tree each year.

• Create a memory capsule where your family and friends write letters, share photos or include a small memento related to the deceased. Store the capsule in a special place and open it every year at a gathering to revisit shared memories.

• Host a memory walk, where participants can stroll through a path lined with photos, stories and quotes about the deceased. This can end with a picnic or celebration of life event, where loved ones gather to share memories and reflect on the person’s impact on their lives.

• Coordinate an “art in memory” event where family and friends create art pieces inspired by the deceased. These artworks can be displayed in a gallery setting or at a special event, offering a creative and expressive way to honor their memory.

Talk to a funeral home to help facilitate a memorial event. They can offer their expertise and support to ensure your tribute is memorable and heartfelt.

Walking has many benefits!

The older you get, the more difficult it can be to stay physically active. However, walking is an excellent way to keep fit without exerting too much effort. Here’s a look at some of the benefits of walking.

Strengthens your muscles

Walking for 30 minutes daily can strengthen your leg and back muscles, improving your balance and reducing the risk of falls. It’s also an excellent way to burn calories and maintain a healthy weight.

Prevents various health problems

Studies have shown that going on regular

walks can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It can also lessen chronic pain and help in stroke recovery.

Boost mood

Moderate-intensity walking (which causes slight breathlessness) directly affects your psychological health. It can improve your self-esteem and stabilize your mood. Plus, walking with others can help you feel less isolated. All this boosts your spirits! Walking also has beneficial effects on memory and concentration.

In short, walking has numerous physical and psychological benefits. Ready to get started? The more you walk, the more you’ll want to walk.

In 1581, young Emilia Bassano is a ward of English aristocrats. Her lessons on languages, history, and writing have endowed her with a sharp wit and a gift for storytelling, but like most women of her day, she is allowed no voice of her own. Forced to become a mistress to the Lord Chamberlain, who oversees all theatre productions in England, Emilia sees firsthand how the words of playwrights can move an audience. She begins to form a plan to secretly bring a play of her own to the stage— by paying an actor named William Shakespeare to front her work. Told in intertwining timelines, By Any Other Name, a sweeping tale of ambition, courage, and desire centers

two women who are determined to create something beautiful despite the prejudices they face. Should a writer do whatever it takes to see her story live on . . . no matter the cost? ROSEMARY FOCACCIA

As well as being tasty and fragrant,

Ingredients

• 4 cups bread flour

• 1 sachet instant yeast

• 1 teaspoon table salt

• 14 ounces warm water

• 5 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 teaspoon coarse salt (optional)

• 1 sprig fresh rosemary* or 1 tablespoon dried rosemary

• 12 black olives, cut lengthwise

Directions

1. Pour the flour into a large bowl and add the yeast. Mix well with a whisk. Add the table salt and mix again.

2. Make a well in the center of the flour. Pour in the 14 ounces of water and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Mix well until a moist, sticky dough forms. Dust a work surface with flour and pour on the mixture. Knead for 5 to 10 minutes until the dough is soft and slightly less sticky. Place the dough in a clean bowl, cover with a cloth and let it rest for an hour (it should double in size).

3. Oil an ovenproof dish (approx. 9 x 13 inches) and place the dough inside. Spread the dough so it reaches all four corners of the dish. Cover with a cloth

and let rest for 45 minutes.

4. Preheat the oven to 350 F (convection mode if possible). Using your fingers, make small dimples in the dough. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons oil, 1 teaspoon water and coarse salt. Moisten the dough with this mixture. Sprinkle the rosemary over the top and press the olives into the dimples.

5. Bake for 40 minutes. While the bread is still warm, drizzle with the remaining oil.
