Catch some summer vibes & plan your project

For 60 years, the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show has invited the community to get away to summer and access the experts. To celebrate our anniversary, we’ve pulled out all the stops offering a She Shed Giveaway, an impressive backyard patio inspired beer garden, Kids Corner, workshops and many more centrally located features.

We all shop and use online resources because it’s quick and convenient. But the show is an “experience.” It saves you time by putting all the professionals in one place and providing valuable connections. It also gives you the opportunity to see, feel and touch that the internet just can’t provide.

This year’s workshops check all the boxes to get you geared up for a remodel, plan some grilling strategies and to improve your home, yard and garden.

Friday, I suggest a “date night” to visit the beer garden. You can enjoy a few cocktails and street tacos while browsing the show with your best friend or sweetheart. Children age 17 and younger

are always free at the show, but be sure to bring them on Saturday for free face painting in the Kids Corner. Sunday is for the dogs, literally! Invite Fido to the show and cure his winter blues, too! Catch some summer vibes with us and bring your plans for what’s next on your project list! This is the perfect opportunity to connect with hundreds of home improvement and building industry professionals. WE’RE CELEBRATING 60 IN ‘22

There’s no place like the Home & Garden Show!

The Red River Valley Home & Garden Show, organized by Home Builders Association of F-M, celebrates its 60th annual event Feb. 25-27, offering the largest selection of home and garden exhibits in the region.

The show began at the Fargo Civic Center in 1962. Early shows featured hourly door prizes, 40 to 50 exhibitors and a homeowners’ clinic covering building, electrical, landscaping, interior decorating, plumbing, heating and air conditioning and financial topics. First known as simply The Home Show, the event

moved to West Acres Mall in the 1970s, then back to the Civic Center, and found its current home at the Fargodome in 1993.

Today, the Home & Garden Show hosts hundreds of exhibitors. Education has remained an integral part as organizers work with local experts to offer workshops on cutting edge design trends, grilling and yard/ gardening topics. Other features like kids’ activities, a “dog day” and beer garden continue evolving to provide a summerlike, warm experience for show attendees.

MAKE IT A ‘DAY’

We’re back. It’s our 60th anniversary. And we’ve got some ideas for you! The stars of our show are the exhibitors and we place them all under one roof for one weekend, but this is also a community coming together to welcome summer. We know you want to hang out with us all weekend, so check out these themed days we have planned for you.

FRIDAY “DATE NIGHT”

Maximize the fact that there probably won’t be many rowdy rug rats at the show! Just sayin’! It’s true that Friday at the Home & Garden Show is a laid-back vibe. Come check it out while enjoying a Backyard Beer Garden cocktail and some street tacos with your favorite date. Whether it’s your best buddy, gal pal or your long-time lover, you’ll enjoy the show experiencing it together and making plans for summer projects!

SUNDAY “DOG

DAY”

Sunday is literally for the dogs! We know your doggos are part of the family so bring them out to the show with you. Natural Pet Center is the day’s sponsor and will provide some fun swag for your furry family member. You must purchase a $5 ticket and sign a waiver for Fido, and then you’re all set!

SATURDAY “KIDS DAY”

Our Kids Corner features all kinds of fun activities all weekend, and its whimsical design by Tin•ker will be sure to inspire. But Saturday is special, featuring PiKadilly Face Painting at no cost. Psssssst, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill face painting! Free for all ages, kids can choose from a wide variety of options from professional artist, Pam Kinneberg. Parents must always supervise their children ages 12 and under.

We’re in your corner with kidcentered activities

The Kids Corner is located in the southwest corner of the field level in exhibit space #425 and professionally designed by Tin•ker to be a whimsical get-away for children at the show. PiKadilly Face Painting will be featured Saturday only, free of charge. It’s a place for children to feel inspired to get outside and play in the yard...well, as soon as the weather allows.

Once you enter the space through a colorful floral doorway you will be able to enjoy making crafts, coloring and building with Legos! We know the importance of sharing the outdoors with children and how fun it can be to just play in the dirt sometimes.

Children age 12 and under must be supervised and accompanied by a guardian.

Separate from the Kids Corner, take your littles to visit “Trucks & Treasures” where they can gather goodies from vendors and explore vehicles of all types, including construction, landscaping, transportation and just plain cool — all in one place!

Children are allowed to touch their favorite vehicles, get behind the wheel and meet the people who help build and serve our community. It’s located on the north end of the field level and all ages are welcome.

Makers gotta make. Tin•ker? Ashley Rieck imagines herself as a combination of Tinkerbell and Maleficent. The name reflects both TinkerBell and how she tinkers around all day. She’s the mastermind behind the Kids Corner design at this year’s show. Bravo! Ashley specializes in alcohol ink painting and epoxy art and loves working on pet portraits and creating sparkly pieces! tinkercreates.com

Pam Kinneberg studied art in college and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design. She started InHouse Design in 1996 and PiKadilly in 2013. She truly loves both businesses and recognizes art as part of who she is. Pam gets excited for every event she’s involved with and takes satisfaction from making people happy, calling it magical!

Sunday is for the dogs

Enough with the cold paws and chilly noses! Even pups look forward to summer.

Presented by Natural Pet Center, our “dog day” invites show attendees and their four-legged family members to stretch their legs and enjoy the event together. Your doggo will savor the chance to sniff some new smells, see some new sights and spend time with you … without the pain of old man winter.

Even better, Natural Pet Center will provide fun swag for your furry family member.

Owners must purchase a $5 ticket for their dog and sign a waiver. Dogs allowed Sunday, Feb. 27, only.

Owners/handlers are limited to one dog per person at any time. Handlers must be over the age of 18 and also not responsible for managing children. All dogs should arrive at the Fargodome with a wellfitting collar or harness with one tag that indicates contact information for owners and one tag that confirms rabies vaccination status. Collars must be worn at all times. Retractable leashes are not permitted. For the safety of your dog and others, we do not allow puppies under 4 months, sick dogs, dogs with active injuries (ie. stitches, bandages, etc) or female dogs in heat.

Take a break from walking through the exhibits and dream about the things you saw and companies you like to start planning your projects. Talk with the landscaping pros from Precision Lawn & Landscape about your next outdoor project while enjoying refreshing beverages and delicious street tacos.

Some of the exhibit features you’ll enjoy include a fountain, pergolas, stone sitting areas, grills, greenery and games.

Home Builders Care offers springtime opportunities for teens

SUMMER TRADES CAMP ALLOWS STUDENTS ACCESS TO THE PROS

Students ages 15-21 can work directly with homebuilding industry professionals to gain exposure to the trades during the Herdina Construction Trades Camp weekdays, June 6-17, at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Moorhead.

A certified instructor supervises all hands-on activities with industry volunteers and students will learn about several trades including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, roofing and siding.

Herdina students will also be eligible for post-secondary scholarships to be used in a trades-related field at Minnesota State Community and Technical College or North Dakota State College of Science.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PURSUING TRADES CAREERS

Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation’s scholarship application for high school junior and senior students is now available at hbcfm.com on the Scholarships page.

Deadline to apply is March 25, 2022. Scholarship amounts will be awarded at a $500 minimum. Applicants must plan to enroll in residential construction trades or a related field (plumbing, electrical, building construction technology, construction management, hearting/air conditioning, etc.) at Minnesota State Community and Technical CollegeMoorhead or North Dakota State College of Science-Wahpeton.
