DECEMBER 2017

PAUL THINKING THOUGHTS Hey Dudes and Dudettes, I hope my words find you well. Well, what multitude of wild and wonderful happenings that occurred in recent weeks. The 2017 Forwardian Film Festival was held in October at the Antoine Dutot Gallery and Museum in Delaware Water Gap, PA and films that were presented awards during our 2016 festival were screened during the 18th Annual Black Bear Film Festival in Milford, PA. Both events were well attended and well received. I look forward to 2018’s film festivals. There were, of course, other art related happenings going on throughout October with many of them spilling over into November. This is why I couldn’t find the time to create a November 2017 Issue of The Forwardian Gazette. I am deeply sorry to those of you who eagerly await each issue that I just didn’t get it together in time. However, I have created a special issue that covers the events that occurred in October along with many that happened so far this month. I also have a listing of events that are planned for the remainder of November along with those set for December. I hope that mitigates some things. Well, that’s all from me for now. How are you? Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have about the publication, The Forwardian Arts Society, or anything at all. I promise to tell you everything. I would make a terrible spy. I look forward to hearing from you soon and I'll keep a good thought for you until then. Going Forwardian with you Paul Adam Smeltz The Forwardian Arts Society

Forwardian Adventures In Film Written by Paul Adam Smeltz The 2017 Forwardian Film Festival was held at The Antoine Dutot Gallery and Museum in Delaware Water Gap, PA from Friday October 13th until Sunday October 15th. However, like all great adventures, the journey began much earlier than the commencement date. A number of get togethers were held among volunteers who explored avenues in which this year’s festival would surpass the extraordinary qualities of previous events. These individuals included Jake Roth, Daniel Ferron, Humbert and Elizabeth Fernandez, and Juli Gonzalez along with Jane, Jonathan, and Benjamin MacHale. Together, their phenomenal contributions to the endeavor proved to be essential to the success the event would later encounter and much appreciation is deserved by all. An art exhibition was added to this year’s festival titled, “The Art That Dreams Are Made Of” which is derived from the final line Humphrey Bogart delivers as private investigator Sam Spade in the 1941 film noir classic, “The Maltese Falcon.” (“It’s the stuff that dreams are made of.”) Along with some incredible work created by some outstanding artists, the exhibit offered a Silent (But Deadly) Art Auction, The Grand Forwardian Raffle, and a 50/50 drawing. The wonderful experience of receiving the work for the exhibit, auction, and raffle took place on October 10 th and 11th. Jane MacHale and Norma Goodwin registered the pieces that arrived. The hanging of the work was exquisitely done by Kathy Steiner and Jill Swersie on Thursday October 12th. Their expertise and aesthetic sensibilities helped make the exhibition a visually spectacular one. It was also the day when a local Television Station with the call letters of BRC (Blue Ridge Cable) Channel 13 came by to interview individuals for their evening news broadcast in advance of the event. Thanks be to all who participated in the exhibition’s preparation process. The Artists’ Reception for The Art That Dreams Are Made Of Exhibition was held on Friday October 13 th. A large number of art and film lovers filled the gallery with excited conversations inspired by the images that adorned the walls as well as the many activities that were taking place. The delicious variety of food brought in by many of the artists and friends of the event satisfied the taste buds of all who indulged in the culinary delights. Raffle and 50/50 tickets were sold as names and competitive bid amounts were affixed to sheets accompanying the auction items. The individuals who won the 50/50 drawing and the auction item he/she placed the highest bid on were determined on the final day of the festival. However, The Grand

Forwardian Raffle was held every evening and reception’s drawing would be its first. The second day began with the screening of the films Natalia and The C Files which were both directed by Kareem McMichael. These films were followed by the film Flip a Coin directed by Trisha Thompson. This was followed by the films Outlaw and Just Deserts which were directed by Louise Devery. The films directed by Ms. Devery were followed by Double or Nuttin’ directed by Stewart Brodian. His film was followed by the screening of the films Jane Doe and It's The Last Name: Frank Zappa the Father directed by Albert Shivers. The next film was an animated piece directed by Kyle Rebar titled, “Here Comes the Plague Doctor” which takes place in a post-apocalyptic plaguescape. The final film for the day was a documentary titled, “Fragile Beauty, A Visual Journey” directed by Alan Kaplan and featuring Wendy Stuart Kaplan. It was after the final screening of the day did the audience cast their votes on which film would be awarded the Viewers' Choice Best Short Film Award for the festival. These votes were tallied as the day’s raffle took place. The film chosen was Flip a Coin directed by Trisha Thompson who received a certificate commemorating the honor and congratulatory expressions from the audience who witnessed the event. The films for the second day began with an animation piece titled, “Life is Pain” directed by Ted Hazard. The next film was Enter the Chamber directed by Carlo Deconza. The next film was One Day: A Video Diary September 11th, 2010 directed by Humbert Fernandez. Mr. Fernandez’ film was followed by My Life, My Story, My Tourette’s directed by Peter Giunta and featuring Danny Ferron who suffers from the condition. The final film to be screened for the day and the festival was In Season directed by Albert Shivers. This was followed by the audience given the opportunity to cast their votes on which film would be presented the Viewers' Choice Best Feature and Overall Film Awards for the festival. These votes were tallied while the Forwardian Grand Raffle and the Drawing for the 50/50 took place. At the conclusion of these events, it was announced that the film titled “In Season” by Albert Shivers won both The 2017 Forwardian Film Festival’s Viewers' Choice Best Feature and Overall Film Awards. Congratulatory sentiments were shared by the gathering. It was sometime afterwards did the entire company depart with memories of the festival and all it brought to them as they continued their life’s journeys. The adventures the art of film can impart by taking its audiences’ to unexplored realms within and outside one common experiences will linger with the many who came to enjoy the festival for a very long time. The departure of those who attended The 2017 Forwardian Film Festival sowed the seeds of anticipation for the arrival of the 2018 festival. I look forward to to it, too.
