JUNE 2017

THINKING THOUGHTS Hey Dudes and Dudettes, I hope my words find you well. In the United States, the 4 th of July holds a great deal of significance for many as it’s referred to as the day the British Colonist declared their Independence from the mother country. A war ensued and, in addition to the causalities, we lost a bit. But, we won a bit, too. And, a lot of people think it was worth it. We know it’s a bit of a stretch, but the Independence Day holiday reflects a little on The Forwardian arts society. You see, we don’t ask for or do we accept federal or state funding. This is because the government can be kind of fickle. It’s willing to be generous to the Arts when one group of people are in charge and stingy as anything when another group is calling the shots. Also, we’ve seen groups and organizations who receive funding regularly from government sources become somewhat complacent. The group or organization start out with some wonderful goals to be of help to the community and is willing to work for support of the people. But, after routinely receiving funds, some begin to wonder if they really have to pursue the goals they placed for themselves and do they really have to work so hard for the community if they’re getting money to maintain operations anyhow. It’s almost fortunate that the government cuts funding so these groups have to seek support from the people they are suppose to help. It is then the people can encourage the group or organization to learn if it’s still a meaningful entity for the community when it asks, “What have you done, Lately?” before donating their hard earned money to it. So, this is another reason we don’t seek government funding. We never want to face the temptation of being complacent because we have a steady flow of income for The Forwardian Arts Society. We want to assure that our desire to be accountable to the community never wavers. Whenever we need money to do anything, we will always come to the community and our membership to ask for their financial support in completing the endeavor. If we don’t get it, then it’s the community’s and our membership’s way of determining we are on the wrong path and we need to get back on track by making sure our future endeavors will be a blessing to them. So, while we don’t become overly joyful because we don’t have a lot of money, we are mostly at peace with the situation as we have faith in our members and in the community that they will help us to the best of their ability when they know we are expressing our love for the arts. You see, they love the arts, too. And, that love enables them to do wonderful things. Just like it does for us. Well, that’s all from me for now. How are you? Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have about the publication, The Forwardian Arts Society, or anything at all. I promise to tell you everything. I would make a terrible spy. I look forward to hearing from you soon and I'll keep a good thought for you until then. Going Forwardian with you Paul Adam Smeltz The Forwardian Arts Society
