JULY 2018

PAUL THINKING THOUGHTS Hey Dudes and Dudettes, I hope my words find you well. Wow, what a month June has been. The Spring season beautifully transitioned into the Summer while the overall weather continued its erratic trajectories. The Summer Gazebo Concerts began at The Presbyterian Church of the Mountain in Delaware Water Gap, PA, a fashion show was held at the Phoenix Gift Shop in Dingmans Ferry, PA and we held our Forwardian Film Bestival at the Pocono Cinema and Cultural Center in East Stroudsburg, PA on June 2 nd and 9th. I’m already preparing for our 2018 Forwardian Film Festival which will take place at the Antoine Dutot Gallery and Art Museum in Delaware Water Gap, PA from October 12th to the 15th. The Bestival attendance was a modest one with five film lovers coming on the first Saturday and about three people coming to the second screening. But, the enthusiasm of the gathering made the experience a wonderful and meaningful one. I’m very pleased with the results and I consider holding the Forwardian Film Bestival at the Pocono Cinema and Cultural Center was a success. So, this brings me to a thoughtful meandering which I like to indulge in from time to time. I wonder what is success? There seems to me two predominant assessments to what is and what isn’t consider successful. One is at home in the business community in which the concept is defined by how many people are attracted to the event or product and how much money did you make. The other is at home in the artistic community in which success is determined by one’s inward abilities to express or capture moments that are meaningful and did those who experience the work become touched by it. In other words, one approach tends to be goal orientated while the other finds more meaning in the process of the endeavor. Now, the reason I’m bringing all this up is that I’ve noticed a number of local art groups are turning to the business com munity to collaborate in several public art projects. This is not a bad thing since it’s good that people work together for a common goal. But, is the goal a common one? Will the artists and the business people see the result of the creative expressions the same way when their paradigms for success differs so asymmetrically? Maybe, maybe not. But, what I’ve really noticed is that artists are adopting more business like approaches to their creative expressions as selling their work has become more important to some artists I know than it was in the past. It’s almost to the point where some artists are manipulating the creation process in order to produce a piece that is more likely to sell. I’m not sure that making a product to make money in contrast to creating art to inspire others regardless of their ability to purchase the work is a good thing. However, personally, I think it would be nice if business people would be more creative and not be so concerned of what their “Bottom Line” is and just do whatever they’re inspired to do to enhance another’s life regardless of their ability to give them their money. But, I don’t see that happening. Now, of course, I’m referring to Artists and Business people in generalities. And, I do think artists should use some busi ness sense when the attempt to sell their work like realizing members of a local community in which the average income is below the poverty line aren’t able to afford a $1000 painting. Pricing should be flexible as the realization that 10% of something is a lot more that 100% of nothing become apparent. Also, there’s another thing to consider. I could be misinterpreting the relationship between the business and art communities and creating monsters under the bed when all it is are beams of light from a passing car. If this is the case, then I’m just full of shit. But, if there is something to what I’m writing about, than some introspective relating to the motive of why we’re making what we’re making may be good for us. Well, that’s all from me for now. How are you? Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have about this publication, The Forwardian Arts Society, or anything at all. I promise to tell you everything. I would make a terrible spy. I look forward to hearing from you soon and I'll keep a good thought for you until then. Going Forwardian with you Paul Adam Smeltz The Forwardian Arts Society

JULY 2018

Rich and Grace Written by Paul Adam Smeltz A great deal of excitement came to the PoconoArts Cultural Center in Stroudsburg, PA on Saturday June 16th as its The Origins Gallery held an Artists’ Reception for two phenomenal artists from the Monroe and Pike Counties that are located within the Northeast Region of the Commonwealth of PA. The Creative Works of Grace Spezzano and Richard D’Ambrosia were on display as the many art lovers who came to the reception marveled at the hues and the unique talents of these exceptional artists. The works ranged from the soft yet bold colors found in a number of Ms. Spezzano’s work to the darkly mesmeric photographic images captured by Mr. D’Ambrosia. The unequaled styles found in each artist’s visual representations served as contrasting counterpoints to one another’s work. Yet, as one stood back to gain an omnipresent perspective of the entire exhibition, a subconscious blending of the images took place within the mind’s eye of the viewer that allowed the exhibition to become a new and awarding experience. This experience molded the essence of each individual who sought to absorb the exhibition into their souls into something wonderful. It was during this time did Jody Singer, the director of the gallery, great the gathering, shared some news, and introduce the musicians who would entertain the house. The music that accompanied the evening was performed by the incomparable duet known as “Woodrow” www.facebook.com/wearewoodrow who consists of Theresa Ratliff and Brian Bramkamp. Their renditions of songs already established by well know musical artists brought new life and meaning into the compositions while their original songs dissolved into the elixir of the dreams those who attended the event had while listening to their performance. This brought about a chemistry between the audience and the musicians that is often referred to as love. The evening came to a conclusion soon after the Origins’ famous Art Raffle took place. Those who bought tickets earlier eagerly awaited for the winning number to be announced with hopes that the corresponding digits were in their hands. Each coveted item was held aloft by the intoxicatingly beautiful Ms. Jane MacHale while Mr. Singer read the numbers until the final item was won. Joyful exclamations and congratulatory sentiments were shared throughout the remainder of the evening. The Origins Gallery is located within the PoconoArts Cultural Center in Stroudsburg, PA and serves the artistic community as a contemporary arts gallery. Their C\Exhibition featuring the creative works of Grace Spezzano and Richard D’Ambrosia will be on display until July 5 th. The

next event to be presented at the gallery will be an Artists’ Reception for their Peep Show Exhibition scheduled for Saturday July 7th beginning at 6pm. The Peep Show Exhibition will take place during The PoconoArts Council’s www.poconoarts.org Waterscapes Exhibition in the ARTSPACE Gallery and The 1st Annual Stroudsburg Arts Festival. You can learn more about The Origins Gallery by exploring their Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/OriginsGalleryStroudsburg.

THE FORWARDIAN GAZETTE WHO THE FORWARDIAN ARE WE? “We share the belief that the arts can inspire our creative dreams to become magnificent worlds of our deepest experiences reminding us who we really are. Therefore, our fellowship shares a desire to support, encourage, and explore the artistic experiences of creative individuals and groups as they go forward toward their dreams.” Mission Statement As our mission statement suggests, The Forwardian Arts Society is a fellowship for people who love the arts. We define ourselves as a fellowship as compared to an organization because organization suggests some form of hierarchy exists where some members would have the right (or assume to have the right) to tell other member what to do. On the other hand, a fellowship suggests every member is equal to one another and each member’s conduct in The Forwardian Arts Society is only governed by their love for the arts. We invite everyone who love the arts to be a part of The Forwardian Arts Society. It’s free with the only requirements there are to be included is to have a love for the arts and a desire to be a part of The Forwardian Arts Society. The Forwardian Arts Society Friend and Facilitator, Paul (aka The Forwardian Dude), travels all around experiencing a multitude of adventures throughout the artistic community. You can see him almost anywhere there's an artists' reception being held, a play being presented, or a concert being performed with his camera and note pad. He posts his articles and reviews along with the photographs he takes on his Social Networks. He says, "The reason I do this is twofold. One is to help promote the artist and the venue through these sites and second to help people who can't attend these events for whatever reason to still partake of them."
