SEPTEMBER 2017

THINKING THOUGHTS Hey Dudes and Dudettes, I hope my words find you well. As you’ll discover later in this issue of our wonderful magazine (and I refer to it as such with all the bias I can muster), August has been an incredible month for the arts. The precursors to the very popular and well established Black Bear Film Festival in Milford, PA took place in the guise of their Community Picnic and their BBQ Fundraising Dinner. The festival celebrates its 18th year which has been a continuous annual event since it began. I am in awe of their accomplishments as, many of you might know, The Forwardian Film Festival was first held in 2011 and our second festival didn’t occur until 2015. Luckily, it has been occurring every year since 2015 but at different locations and dates. However, being a bit of a nomad somewhat appeals to me as there is some degree of free spirited and romantic aspects to the situation. Also, I think this nomadic element in our Film Festival has provided me the ability to keep it fresh every year as new venues and situations related to them has kept me on my toes. Each venue has individual technical and other requirements that must be considered in order to maintain a good relationship with them. This has taught me how to work with others representing a venue while maintaining the integrity of the film festival and the independence embodied in its uniqueness. I don’t know how the venue we’re holding this year’s festival or my colleagues would assess me in this regard, but I think I’m doing pretty damn good. So, our Film Festival for October is shaping up nicely and my colleagues and I are very excited. This year we’re holding an art show titled, “The Art That Dreams Are Made Of” which is derived from the film, “The Maltese Falcon” in which Humphrey Bogart (as Sam Spade) end the film referring to the statue as “The stuff that dreams are made of.” The artists’ reception will be held on the first day of the festival and will include meet and greets with the artists and filmmak ers, a silent (but deadly) arts auction, and the first of three Grand Raffles to be held during the remaining evenings of the festival. All artists and photographers are welcome to participate and, while its preferred the theme of the work be related to film, anything your wonderful eye captures will be accepted. You’ll find our prospectus through our website. Well, that’s all from me for now. How are you? Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have about the publication, The Forwardian Arts Society, or anything at all. I promise to tell you everything. I would make a terrible spy. I look forward to hearing from you soon and I'll keep a good thought for you until then. Going Forwardian with you Paul Adam Smeltz The Forwardian Arts Society
