After such challenging times for our members and the Club, we are gradually returning to a new normal and, we believe, can look to the future with optimism. It was great to welcome back many of our members this summer and see the Club as busy as ever. I can proudly say that August was one of our very best trading months ever, and it was wonderful to see so many members and guests enjoying happy family times at Fairways. It has wonderful big bright apartments, freshly renovated, contemporary but not fussy (and 10

Another bathroom so we aren’t all tumbling over one and other. A mini mart is just steps away where we can pick up still-warm pain au chocolats and orange juice for breakfast on our own sunshiney terrace. A swimming pool (and here’s the important bit) with a wide shallow ledge and sloping entry so that even the tiniest toddlers can paddle about, and a perfectly deep deep-end with cascade showers for the grown-ups. And we take advantage of it all, rolling and pressing our four-day stay into one of the most relaxing breaks any of us can remember. No timings to stick to, no routes to follow, just us, doing what we as a family want to do. We found the whole set-up charming, low key, laid back, and completely lovely. As I say often, so much of my job is focussed on seeking out the newest, the coolest, the most on-trend, under-the-radar places to stay. And sometimes I just need to look up and see what’s been right under my nose all this time.

Não se esqueçam de comprar figos secos recheados com amêndoa – um dos produtos mais característicos do mercado. Visitem a banca Chillidelicious no interior para os ditos chutneys caseiros feitos com malaguetas da horta. Comprem fruta para as vossas férias e vegetais para as noites em que queiram ficar em casa a cozinhar. Procurem o peixeiro com uma estranha parecença com Ronnie Wood e levem um impressionante polvo para o vosso próximo churrasco.

Os portugueses orgulham-se destes produtos. De tal forma qua alguns dos vegetais são inclusivamente protegidos. Numa banca vendem-se batatas-doces designadas “Doces de Aljezur” que a vendedora explica serem provenientes de uma região de denominação demarcada. Tal como o champanhe que, como todos sabem, vem da região de Champanhe, há batatasdoces de Aljezur – não aceitem, portanto, imitações. “Há um festival e tudo, em novembro”, afirma ela. E uma procura rápida no Google confirma que existe de facto o Festival da Batata-doce de Aljezur, que se realiza anualmente no final de novembro. Uma verdadeira loucura! Visitem Raquel, com o seu desgrenhado cabelo negro, e comprem figo cheio com amêndoa, colhidos nas suas terras. We spend so much of our holidays on beaches that it is easy to become blinded to their beauty and take them for granted, even become bored of them… wherever they are in the world. Portugal is no exception to this.

It’s easy to make the mistake and believe all beaches are the same and offer little other than lying down until you get too hot followed by a cooling dip in the sea. Perfectly pleasant but if you’re the type of person who is constantly on the go this sand-based cyclical temperature adjustment process might not appeal. If you’d rather run along a beach than stick a towel down and sit on it, opt for a cycling tour or take in a round of haphazard golf, then you probably find yourself regularly heading to where the land meets the sea to enjoy the wide variety of beach shenanigans that don’t include sunbathing. PEOPLE WATCHING RIVER BEACH OF PEGO FUNDO It’s perfectly possible that we’re straying away from the true meaning of the word beach here but it’s in the top five so we’re running with this river beach. On banks of the Guadiana you can see Spain, and at this particular stretch of sand there’s a beach volleyball court, gym equipment and floating beach chairs. We have no idea why people want to use gym equipment on the beach, but there is nothing better of an afternoon than sitting at the bar watching them show off to one another and quietly chuckling to oneself.

The Barlavento coastline, where this charming little beach can be found, is littered with majestic cliffs and caverns. Rocks and boulders are dotted along a coastline that attracts a wide range of birds, should you be a fan of our feathered friends. Praia da Batata is linked to a whole host of other beaches through tunnels carved out of the rocks, meaning a walk here is hugely entertaining and far more exciting than your average seaside stroll.

Ok, so we’re cheating with beach number one because it’s not one beach, it’s a whole stretch of coast. But there are numerous beaches along this stretch: some sweeping and wide, some small private coves. If you’re a surfer, you probably know this part of Portugal rather well. If you prefer to keep your feet dry along this coastline take in the dramatic landscape of high cliffs, rocks and sand dunes.

If you enjoy a more active trip to the seaside, this place is going to tick a lot of boxes. Water-skiing, speed boating and jet-skiing are just three of our favourites and sometimes a little adrenaline rush is just what you need to properly relax.

During the lockdown Helen has become a happy mum again, giving birth to twins; a perfect one boy and one girl combination. Now that she has three little ones to care for she will have some very active living of her own to attend to. And this is where we welcome Amy Williams MBE, Skeleton Olympic Gold Medallist, to Four Seasons Fairways. Guests will have a chance to join Amy for the first time in a special Active Living Week from 21st to 28th November 2021. Amy will lead stretch and mobility classes in the grounds of the resort, HIIT, Full Body Burn, Core & Abs sessions and a bike tour along the Ria Formosa as well as taking to the water for a Kayak Safari. Forming a barrier between the Ria Formosa lagoon and the open Atlantic Ocean are a number of small islands. Culatra is the favourite of Marketing Manager, Angela Viegas, who describes it as her secret refuge. It’s easily reached from Faro or Olhão by ferry or water taxi, but remains unknown to most tourists.

Generally, when you announce to the world that you’re pregnant with your third child, the same statements seem to echo from person to person. “Was it planned?” “You’ll need a bigger car.” “You’ll never be able to go on holiday again.” Our daughter was born in early August, so we were aware that getting away in the summer whilst the schools were off wasn’t 48

going to happen, but knew there was a window open to travel in the October half term. Travelling with kids is stressful – this is a given, especially when children still need nap times plus all the paraphernalia that comes when travelling with a baby. With this in mind, we did our research to find the perfect place for our first holiday abroad as a family of five! Basil is seven, Sonny is four and Inca is two months old, so there would need to be a lot of boxes to tick to make our holiday not only one to remember, but also one that fits into our beautifully chaotic life. So this time, we checked into a self-catering villa with a jacuzzi at Four Seasons Fairways. To say it exceeded our expectations is an understatement! Everything a parent needs is already in the resort, and I’m not talking high chairs and a baby pool (although they had these too); I’m talking about Kids Club, babysitters and wait for it… a convenience store a stone’s throw away from where we were staying. Necessary essentials that you would buy at home were at this store… from fish fingers to nappies, sunscreen to newspapers to wine and beer, this little shop had it all. And just to make your experience there even more seamless, you could pay for your items by adding them to your villa bill. Small move, massive effect. This was just one of the many brilliant facilities that we parents need when away with kids. Pedi à babbysitter para me enviar uma mensagem de WhatsApp para eu saber se estava tudo bem e, assim que a nossa entrada chegou e o vinho estava a ser servido, recebi uma mensagem a dizer “as crianças estão todas a dormir – aproveitem a noite”. Foi ouro, puro ouro! Mas há mais… não nos demos ao trabalho de usar a cozinha totalmente equipada, porque podíamos mandar vir comida através do serviço de takeaway do restaurante Vivo. Mas e nas outras noites em que queriam sair sem os miúdos, perguntam vocês? Tínhamos um jacúzi na nossa espaçosa área exterior e, assim que os miúdos adormeciam, enfiávamo-nos lá dentro, abríamos uma garrafa de Prosecco e relaxávamos, conseguindo sempre ouvi-los caso despertassem. Um dia alugámos bicicletas e visitámos o Campus onde os miúdos tiveram uma aula de ténis com Judy Murray (uau!) e eu me pude deliciar com os magníficos e vastos campos de golfe circundantes, onde o meu marido casualmente se cruzou com Chris Evans! Quem é Q uem ?

Originally from Kidderminster in Worcestershire, Liz Hodges left her job as a banker some 30 years ago and moved to the Algarve. She came on holiday to visit friends and decided it was where she wanted to live “It was a moment of madness but I don’t regret it for one minute,” Liz says. Liz worked for the developers who built Four Seasons Fairways and when the members took over the running of the club, Liz took on the role of Member Liaison Manager, a job that has developed in complexity over the years. “No day is the same,” Liz says. “I spend a lot of time helping members with special requests. This can be anything from arranging a birthday party to booking flights to helping people who become ill.” Much of Liz’s day to day work involves checking that new memberships are running smoothly and a lot of statistical analysis. “I love all the number crunching,” Liz says. “It must be the banker in me! But the best part of my job is building relationships with members and trying to get the best outcomes for them, whatever their needs. I’ve made some great friends over the years.”

Liz trabalhou para os empreiteiros que construíram o Four Seasons Fairways e, quando os membros passaram a gerir o clube, Liz assumiu o cargo de Member Liaison Manager, uma função cuja complexidade tem crescido significativamente ao longo dos anos. “Os dias nunca são iguais,” diz Liz. “Passo muito tempo a lidar com pedidos especiais dos membros, desde organizar uma festa de anos a marcar voos para ajudar alguém que ficou doente.” Grande parte do trabalho diário de Liz prende-se com a supervisão da contratação de novos membros e muita análise estatística. “Adoro analisar os números”, afirma ela. “Deve ser do meu passado na banca! Mas o melhor é construir relações com os membros e tentar obter as melhores soluções, sejam quais forem as suas necessidades. E tenho feito bons amigos ao longo dos anos.”

Carla Clara, who runs our golf office, was born in Angola but brought up in South Africa. This was where her family fled as refugees in 1974 when Portugal cut its ties with its colonies. She graduated with a degree in Public Relations and Communications and in her last year at school met her husband, Rui, a fellow Portuguese refugee from the colony of Mozambique. For New Year’s Eve 2000, Carla and Rui came to the Algarve for a holiday and loved it. So they decided to move here. Carla worked in the newly formed Kids Club at Four Seasons Fairways and Rui, who had played golf in South Africa, was soon recruited to set up the golf department. Twenty years on and Rui is Four Seasons Fairways’ Deputy General Manager and the golf side of things has become Carla’s speciality. “Although I don’t actually play golf myself, I spend so much time talking about it I almost feel as if I do,” says Carla. Carla’s work involves dealing with Golf Club contracts and shop suppliers, as well as daily and advance tee time bookings. A big part of her job involves organising all member competitions, as well as the annual Open Amateur Week. “What I enjoy most about my job is the contact with our members - we always have a lot of fun together”.

Carla trabalhou inicialmente no recém-inaugurado Kids Club do Four Seasons Fairways e Rui, que jogara golfe na África do Sul, foi rapidamente recrutado para formar o departamento do golfe. Vinte anos depois, Rui é subdiretor-geral do Fairways e o golfe passou a ser a especialidade de Carla. “Embora eu não jogue golfe, passo tanto tempo a falar da modalidade que é quase como se a praticasse,” afirma. O trabalho da Carla envolve a supervisão dos contratos do Clube de Golfe e dos fornecedores da loja, bem como as marcações diárias e antecipadas dos tempos de saída. Uma grande parte do seu trabalho prende-se com a organização de todas as competições dos membros, bem como a anual Semana Amadora. “O contacto com os membros é a faceta do meu trabalho que me dá mais prazer – divertimo-nos sempre muito juntos.”
