2012 BOARD of GOVERNORS Dina Schulz, Chair Frank Broyles, Ron Howard, John Mason, Scott Oishi, Sharon Pfaff, Bob Shema, Kate Shema, Craig Uebele
Chair’s Chatter Dear Fellow Members, Summer is all about making memories and I hope you seized the opportunities to do just that over the past few months. I did! One memory that will last me a lifetime took place right here at our Club. TPC played host to The First Tee PLAYer Advanced Academy where 24 elite young golfers from around the country put their playing skills and life skills to the test during a very busy week around town. The highlight of the week was a tournament that paired two First Tee players with two Sports Club members. I had the privilege to play with two young guns, each of who are pursuing a collegiate career and dream of playing on the PGA and LPGA TOUR. The goal of The First Tee is to create an experience rich in both golf and life skills that will improve the young player’s chances to compete at a higher level both academically and athletically. They say golf teaches you life lessons and I must say I brushed up on my learning while walking alongside these young players. Focus, determination, patience, respect and honesty all came into play during our round. I had a blast!
After talking with fellow members, I realized quickly everyone felt the same way. We all had a chance to pay it forward this day and look forward to doing it again. Now it’s your turn! You have the chance to pay it forward during Cool October! Whether you play a few holes during Paul’s Cool 18 Golf Tournament, try to ace Robin in his Tennis Marathon, pedal your way with Michelle in the Spin-a-Thon, or participate in the Cool 5K and 10K Run or Walk, you will be creating memories alongside your fellow members and supporting our community at the same time. I know how competitive many of you are, so everybody wins! What do you say? Play it “COOL” and join in on the fun! The memories are waiting!
Best,
Dina C. Schulz Chair, Board of Governors

information and it maps out their post-treatment follow-up schedule. The software allows for a smooth informational transition if a patient changes physicians mid-treatment or post treatment.
The 28th annual Cool October events and fundraising efforts are now underway! Our very own local Irving Cancer Center at Baylor Irving is excited about this year’s donations and funding possibilities. Let’s take a look at some of the things we will help the Cancer Center with in the near future: Breast Cancer Patient Navigator: Four Seasons Resort and Club funded Baylor Irving’s very first generalist cancer patient navigator, Jo Darling, three years ago. Now, with increased volumes of breast cancer patients, there is a need for a breast-specific patient navigator to help guide patients through the process of postdiagnosis, treatment and survivorship. Patient Information Mapping and Treatment Plan Software: This technologically advanced software provides real-time data capture of patient information, providing them a fully comprehensive plan that includes the history of their care, medical record
Remote Access Project for Physician Coordination: This amazing technology enables other physicians to dial in and collaborate with radiation oncologists on patient treatment planning. Very COOL! DTU-2231 Interactive Pen Display: Introducing a very cool tool that allows radiation oncologists to collaborate with other physicians at the same time to review sterotactic radiotherapy and other treatment planning. So imagine an oncologist circling a specific tumor on an MRI on his iPad, and a consulting physician who can see the exact image on his iPad as well. You can be anywhere in the world and still have the ability to consult on a case. Brilliant and efficient. We are honored to pledge $100,000 to the Irving Healthcare Foundation this year to help support these amazing efforts. We can’t do it without you, though. Grab your calendar and mark off some very important dates:
Schedule of Events October 1-31 – Online Auction with lots of great gifts and Four Seasons trips. October 19 – Cool October Cocktail with great auction items up for bids. October 19 – Tennis Marathon with the tennis pro staff followed by the Cool October Cocktail. October 20 – Spin-a-thon with Michelle Scannell and all the hardcore spinners out there! October 22 – Cool 18 Golf Tournament and Golf Pro Marathon on TPC Four Seasons October 27 – Cool 5K & 10K Run at the Southside of the resort…bring your dogs!
Look for more information coming soon on how to sponsor, give to the auction, play, spin and help us reach our $100,000 goal. AND, remember, early detection is the best prevention! Keep it COOL! Vail Tolbert Director of Public Relations and All Things Cool

You Studied What?
I
am often asked about my dissertation research. I personally enjoy talking about my work, but have found my answer has changed through the years. I would begin to explain how I am investigating the physiological and genetic ramifications of a thermomorphogenic response in Tifdwarf Bermudagrass and that was usually all it took. Facial expressions glazed over and I could tell when people changed from very interested to wondering how long this conversation would take. I quickly learned to shorten up my answer and make it sound as exciting as possible. So here is the new short version.
Scott Abernathy Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Landscaping
I investigated the cause of dwarfism in greens-type Bermudagrass. When grown under cool temperatures (80º Days/65º Nights), dwarf bermudagrass loses its dwarf characteristics. It looks similar to turf grown in fairways. This loss of dwarfism due to temperature provides an easy system to study the cause of dwarfism. My goal was to identify the gene or genes responsible for dwarfism. If successful, this information would significantly benefit turfgrass breeding programs in the future. Did I achieve my goal? Not completely but, due to my research, we now believe dwarfism in these plants is due to a mutation in a gene associated with a key plant hormone. Want to chat about it? Please contact me anytime at scott.abernathy@fourseasons.com

Did you know that the fall season is the most common time of year for breakouts? Breakouts increase during the fall months because the oil flow in the skin during the summer months is still occurring this time of year. The cooler air creates layers of dead skin cell buildup, resulting in trapped oil and bacteria underneath the surface of the skin. We want to help keep your skin healthy and radiant, so here are some tips to keep that skin glowing.
Victoria Nickle 1. Avoid high-foaming Spa Director & cleansers. Curator of Calm Bar soap and many foaming
cleansers have high pH balances with harsh ingredients that strip the water out of the skin. Remember the rule: more lather = more drying. I use ZO Skincare’s Hydrating Cleanser $48. 2. Use an exfoliant to remove dry skin cells and unclog trapped pores. Chemical exfoliants are enzymes or acids that are applied to the skin and dissolve and digest dead skin cell build up. Naturopathica Pumpkin Enzyme Peel is perfect for Fall for $62. 3. Get your pores professionally cleaned! To reduce clogged pores, blackheads and break outs, regular monthly deep pore cleansing facials are a must! Try our Naturopathica Pure Results Organic Facial with a deep enzyme peel for maximum results for $205.
Pumpkin Pie & Whipped Cream Body Glow 50 minutes $125 After an exfoliating dry body brushing, prepare to be dolloped! A warm organic pumpkin puree mask packed with nutrient rich mud is applied and soaks deep into the skin with a cozy wrap! This treatment finishes with a whipped butter cream application to leave you glowing and ready for Fall! Limited Edition! Spiced Orange Custom Massage 50 minutes $140 Try our favorite Custom Massage with a spiced orange twist – we use a silky-soft honeysuckle orange cream with vitamin packed fruit cells to keep skin glowing through the Fall.

Fall at the Club is a very busy season, especially for activities in the fitness and tennis areas. You will see the racquetball and squash leagues gearing up and the after school Junior Tennis Program in full swing. Make sure to sign up for the Tennis Doubles Club Championship and get involved with the Tennis Competitors of Dallas (TCD)! We look forward to seeing you around the Club and taking advantage of these exceptional fall programs and events!
trength, conditioning, and flexibility are vital when trying to take your tennis game to the next level. Here are a few quick tips to help enhance your game though the fitness facility.
First, take the time to stretch your legs and arms before play. Simple stretches for your legs and arms can be done by using the Precor Stretching Machine in the Fitness Center. There are diagrams of stretches displayed on the machine.
Tennis Tip John Mullman Director of Tennis Instruction
Next, sign up for spin classes. This will strengthen the legs and help you move quickly and efficiently on the court. Make sure to strengthen your arms by curling light weights, about 15 reps of flies and curls. Stretch again! Stretch your legs on the court before you play. Simple toe touches and knee bends will do the trick. Don’t bounce when you stretch, breathe and let your body continue to get to the desired point. I’m confident this advice is consistent with what our personal trainers say, but for additional advice, please contact anyone of our professional staff members. See you on the courts.
