Chair’s Chatter

W

hile summer typically has not been my favorite time of the year to be in North Texas, this summer has been a little different. During July we had a nice soaking rain for almost a week with moderating temperatures, treat number one.

I love the rain and enjoy a break from the heat, but the highlight for me was treat number two: the addition of WorldTeam Tennis and the Texas Wild to our July calendar of events. The format is unusual, the crowd is a little rowdy, the venue is fantastic, and the tennis is exciting as ever. Watching the Wild’s Bryan Brothers play (in my opinion, the greatest team in the history of doubles tennis),was a personal highlight of mine. If you did not get an opportunity to watch a match or two this year, I encourage you to put it on your “must do” list for 2014. I would like to give a special thanks to the Wild’s owner, Jeff Launius, The City of Irving and our Sports Club for bringing the Wild to our Club. (Here’s a hint for next year: reading the one page rule sheet can add to the fun). Now we move into fall with a full schedule of events including the Club’s local and extremely worthwhile flagship charity event known as “Cool October.” This will be our 29th year of fundraising! I always ask, what can you do to help us help you? Let us know your ideas or issues. Participate in the member surveys, talk to your Board reps or email me at sportsclubbog@gmail.com. See you at WorldTeam Tennis in 2014 and be sure and check out the many options to participate in Cool October! Frank Broyles Chairman, Board of Governors

From the Club Manager Rob Cowan rob.cowan@fourseasons.com

I

t is always exciting to see our Club members succeed in their athletic endeavors. Over the past few months there have been several outstanding accomplishments worth mentioning! Let’s start with one of our younger golf members, 17 year old, Ben Baxter. Ben qualified for the US Amateur at our neighboring club, Las Colinas Country Club. Oklahoma Sooner standout, Emily Collins qualified for the US Women’s Open being played at the Country Club of Charleston. Rumor has it that her proud father, Mike, will be caddying! In addition to Ben qualifying for the US Amateur, our Golf Club Champion, Jake Istnick, was the winner at a qualifier held at Tulsa Country Club. Jake blew away the competition, securing first place by a whopping 5 shots! This year’s Men’s US Amateur was held at The Country Club in Brookeline, Massachusetts. In the tennis world, our very own Board of Governor Representative, Alex Pier, competed in the USTA National 50’s Tournament placing in both singles and doubles. It is a pleasure to watch the time, effort and passion these Sports Club Members dedicate to their sports. It is not surprising to see their incredible accomplishments and we wish all these athletes the best of luck as they compete at the highest level. Well played!

COOL OCTOBER

In a perfect world, no one would die from cancer. It’s a rotten disease that takes too many friends, colleagues, relatives and loved ones away from us too soon. So, let’s fight back. Early detection is the key. Funding technology and equipment that aide in the early detection of cancer for patients is our passion, and you can help make a difference. Cool October is an umbrella cause, started by Four Seasons Resort and Club, in hopes to raise money for advancements in cancer technology and research. It consists of unique sports events that cater to everyone in the community. This year, we ask for your assistance in fighting this disease by helping us reach our goal of $120,000 through the events in October. The money will support two pieces of equipment at Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Irving: Biovision Surgical Specimen Radiography System This $100,000 device provides real-time, operating tableside analysis of surgical specimens to ensure that all cancerous tissue has been removed. Used primarily on breast cancer patients having lumpectomies, it will help the Cancer Center better serve more than 150 patients a year. Currently, the entire surgical team waits for up to 20 minutes for tissue to be analyzed in a lab outside the operating room while the patient waits sleeping under anesthesia. When the Cancer Center acquires this piece of equipment, it will be the first in use in the state of Texas. MultiCare Maximum Comfort (Tabletop) Package This $20,000 device provides, as promised by the name, maximum comfort for patients having a stereotactic breast procedure. These procedures are done using the needle-biopsy machine that Four Seasons generously funded in 1998 (and has helped better diagnose thousands of people!) The device provides greater comfort and faster procedures through more exact positioning. We are honored to support our community hospital so that our friends, colleagues, relatives and loved ones, have access to the BEST in cancer care right here in the community. So please, ink these important dates in your calendar and help us fight cancer for a healthier Irving: October 1-15 October 4-5 October 5 October 22

Tim’s Tips

W

hen playing shots around the green, either you’re going to use the front edge of the club to chip the ball or use the bottom of the club to pitch the ball in the air. Each shot has it’s own characteristics to be successful.

Using the front edge of the club to chip, place the ball back in your stance with your hands forward, stand the club more vertical which moves you closer to the ball and then have your weight positioned on your left side at address. This set-up allows you to create a lower running chip with the front edge of the club striking the turf at impact. Tim Cusick, Director of Golf Instruction tim.cusick@fourseasons.com Follow Tim on Twitter @timcusickgolf Visit his instruction website www.timcusickgolf.com

To pitch the ball, have the stance slightly open with your weight evenly distributed and the ball in the center of your stance. Add a little bit of loft to the clubface at address and keep the loft on the clubface at impact. This contact will be created more with the bottom of the club resulting in a higher shot. Both shots are important and utilized properly will certainly help to lower your scores.

Tennis Tip

John Mullman Director of Tennis Instruction john.mullman@fourseasons.com

W

hen playing tennis outdoors remember you must play “smart.” The elements of wind, sun, and extreme temperatures are always factors when on the court. Here are some helpful suggestions to help you adapt to the conditions. In windy conditions, don’t think about hitting that winning shot. Spend your energy focusing on keeping the ball in play. You will win more points with this mentality. When its bright outside, make sure you have on a comfortable pair of sunglasses. They will help you track the ball more accurately. Players should also wear a light hat or visor on those sunny days. You need to have the proper equipment to help you spot the ball. As a result this will help you play more aggressively. Everyone knows that Texas summers are HOT! So when the temperature is climbing, I recommend wearing light colored clothes. They do a better job deflecking the sun on those hot summer days. Whites are the best and don’t forget sunscreen and hydration! You should be drinking water before, during and after play.

The Club’s Dish

What is a Foodie?

Christof syré, Executive chef christof.syre@fourseasons.com a’ll probably know by now that our Executive Club Chef, Frederic Angevin was promoted to be “THE” Executive Chef with Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora! While we are sad and jealous to see him leave Texas, my team and I are very happy for Frederic and this well-deserved promotion! I encourage any Chef as talented as Frederic to move around the world and broaden their knowledge, just like I used to do. Please join me in wishing him the best of luck in Bora Bora and the many years to come. This leads me to introduce to you our new Club Chef, Ke’o Velasquez. Ke’o originally came from the Islands of Hawaii and has lived and worked here in the Metroplex for the past eight years. For him, Texas hospitality is exactly what his cooking is all about, simplistic but bold! He also worked in several of the top restaurants in town such as Urbano Cafe, Dragonfly at Hotel Zaza, Restaurant Works, Ferre, Victory Tavern, Crú Wine Bar and Kitchen 1924, just to mention a few. Ke’o has been married for two years to his wife Geni, and they are expecting a baby boy at the beginning of next year. We are thrilled to have Ke’o on our team and to have him lead the Club’s culinary efforts.
