Board Of Trustees Updates Mission & Vision Statements

Whether our students come from central Maine or from around the world, we celebrate diversity and pledge to maintain our focus on educational excellence for all.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Hello Alumni and Friends,

WE ARE OFFICIALLY celebrating Foxcroft Academy’s Bicentennial.  FA staff and faculty are already planning events that will have students participating in the yearlong celebration ranging from things like weekly “#200yeartuesdays” history lessons to larger organized events such as a masquerade ball featuring students dressed in garb from the date of our founding in 1823. This year promises to be fun and educational as we share Foxcroft Academy’s birthday with the community!

We are in the early stages of the new school year and school is going very well.  One can notice that another year removed from the pandemic, students are now returning to a more productive educational routine. With this semester’s increases in both local and boarding enrollment, Foxcroft Academy’s total enrollment is currently hovering around 420.  Anticipating a number of new applications for the spring semester, it is expected that we will add twenty more boarding students, bringing the total number of students in the dormitories to 75.  We are mask optional with no COVID-19 restrictions, and everyone is breathing a sigh of relief to be able to once again follow a more normal school routine.

The “Knowledge in Partnership’’ mentoring program was a huge success!  Close to sixty-five percent of the class of 2022 reached out to a Foxcroft Academy alum for help with their senior portfolios.  A few of the students were able to develop relationships leading to student internships and other valuable work experiences.  If you remember, this project was started by Monica Miles Stevens ’13.  Knowing

that Foxcroft Academy’s alumni had a wealth of knowledge and a wide range of work experiences, she thought it would be helpful if a pool of alumni could speak with current students at FA.  The alumni response was overwhelmingly positive, and provided graduating seniors with a great deal of helpful advice and guidance.  Thank you to all students and alumni who participated in our Knowledge in Partnership mentoring program, and a special thank you to Monica, who is completing her graduate work in medicine, for initiating this great idea at Foxcroft Academy.

The Bicentennial celebration is now fully underway.  Toby Nelson, FA’s Chief Communications Officer, is preparing weekly segments of “#200yeartuesdays” with recent pieces focusing on FA’s founder James S. Holmes, tuition in 1852, the downtown Academy building near the Congregational Church, and a scene from a Foxcroft Academy chemistry lab in 1892.  The Student Council is also joining in the celebration by looking into the history of Foxcroft Academy dances over the past 200 years.  Bicentennial plans call for students to come to the masquerade ball dressed in appropriate attire for periods covering the 1820s, 1900s, 1950s, 1960s, etc.  While the faculty continues to brainstorm various activities and ideas, some early considerations include costume days, athletic events and games played in the 1820s, student presentations on Foxcroft Academy’s history, a Lego replica of Foxcroft Academy, and homecoming floats reflecting our bicentennial themes.  Whatever your interests may be, this year promises to deliver on something for everyone in celebration of the Academy’s 200th

birthday.

You will also have an opportunity to celebrate the Bicentennial!  Copies of our bicentennial book “We all Assemble,” can be purchased at Foxcroft Academy or on-line through Amazon. Read through the pages, admire the pictures and paintings, and enjoy memories from contributors, among others, Kristen Stelmok ’95, Kevin Stitham ’70, Dave Mallett ’69, and Tom Lyford ’64. The public will be invited to an upcoming show featuring Mike Dugay and his production of “The Life and Times of Sir Harry Oakes.”  FA students will be presenting projects on Foxcroft Academy’s history on January 26, 2023, followed by a spectacular fireworks display from the island.  On Tuesday, January 31, 2023, we will be hosting a school-wide assembly celebrating the official birthday of Foxcroft Academy.  The general public and

local dignitaries will be invited to attend.  And last but not least, coming to campus next summer, we will gather for a celebration of Foxcroft Academy’s history through music with a dinner/dance gala. Don’t miss any of these upcoming bicentennial events by staying informed through our social media platforms and by keeping up-to-date with Cathy Hall’s latest edition of the Pony Express e-news.

Finally I want to share news with you about the recent birth of our granddaughter, Quinn Olivia Shorey.  As you can imagine, we are ecstatic about having our first grandchild (and it’s about time)!  It was a pleasant reminder about the number of very personal events we have experienced over the past thirteen years, and it reminds Stacy and me of how grateful we are to be part of this community.  I thank you for your support of Foxcroft Academy and I look forward to celebrating Foxcroft Academy’s Bicentennial with you and your family.

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI AFFAIRS

IT’S HARD TO believe another year has come and gone and now we are looking at 2023!

This year was jam-packed with alumni events, grand openings, reunions and great fund-raising success stories.

I think the highlight was the opening of our Jim Robinson Field House, one of the most impressive facilities in the state of Maine, and I was proud to be a part of this successful Building on Tradition campaign.

This year promises to be a busy one with many upcoming regional alumni gatherings. Here are the tentative dates and locations:

• Bangor/November 15

• Boston/December 3

• Lakeland, FL/February 19

• Portland, ME/April 6

If you don’t receive your invitation and would like to attend, just let me know and I can add your name to the reservation list. I hope to be in attendance at all of them and I look forward to catching up with old friends, and meeting some new alumni!

Hi Folks!

WELL, ANOTHER SCHOOL year has come and gone, and we are now in the midst of our bicentennial celebration at Foxcroft Academy! What a great time to be a Pony. This school year will be filled with memories and significant events as we head into our 200-year celebration over the coming months.

Toby Nelson

So what has happened since the last time we spoke? Foxcroft Academy has come out of the pandemic as a stronger institution thanks to our outstanding teachers, caring staff, and 400 eager students, ready and willing to learn and be part of something special. We have added classes and programs, added to the school’s physical footprint, and continue to build on our commitment to provide students with opportunities to learn in the way that best works for them.

Alumni Weekend 2022 was a brilliant celebration filled with familiar faces and lots of laughs, as we were able to hold all events for the first time since the Covid-19 outbreak. From the opening of the Jim Robinson Field House and Philpot Field to the alumni sporting activities to the Alumni Banquet, there was something for everyone throughout the weekend. With over 600 people attending the field house opening, it was the largest post-Covid gathering we have had outside of graduation day. Our school and community are very excited to use the building to its fullest capacity.

Our FA athletic teams had great seasons with many victories on and off the fields and courts. Our football team captured the Class D State championship for the

first time since 2012, our field hockey team made it to the regional finals, and our soccer teams qualified for postseason play. Our boys’ basketball team played in the tournament for the first time at the Cross Center, the girls’ basketball team hosted a playoff game, and the baseball team had a great end-of-season run to get to the regional semifinals. In addition, we had several track and field athletes qualify for regional and state competitions, and our other teams all saw success in their respective fields. It was a good year to wear maroon and white. This fall has started well and we’re excited about our Pony athletic teams.

As for everything else, we are returning to normal with minimal issues inside the school building, and we are all happy to be back doing what we love. The hope is that the 200th year of Foxcroft Academy will be the best yet, and we are on our way to making that happen. As you read this publication, we hope you enjoy taking a trip down memory lane and remembering why Foxcroft Academy is so important to you and the people around us. We hope your fall is everything you want it to be, please join us on campus as we celebrate our bicentennial!

Enjoy the upcoming school year, and stay in touch with us. Find us online at www.foxcroftacademy. org and on our social media platforms on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. Foxcroft Academy is never too far away! Ride on Ponies!

Sincerely,

FIELD HOUSE

INTRODUCING PHILPOT FIELD

During the grand opening of the Jim Robinson Field House, Foxcroft Academy recognized Coach Gene Philpot by naming the turf field and regulation field hockey field in her honor. By honoring Coach Philpot, we were not only celebrating her success during a 35 year coaching and teaching career, we were also recognizing the important contributions she made as a long-time teacher and mentor. Former students and players use words like “integrity,” “fairness,” and “perseverance” to describe some of the lessons learned from Ms. Philpot over the years, and as those of you who know and perhaps worked with her, no one is more deserving of this distinguished honor.

GRAD U ATION
Faculty member and Coach Luis Ayala

ON SUNDAY, JUNE 12th, Foxcroft Academy celebrated its 199th graduating class with the 2022 commencement exercises.  Over 80 students received their diplomas, awards, and scholarships in front of a full crowd in the FA Gym. The ceremony opened with a welcome from FA Senior Class President, Jasper Makowski, followed by remarks to the graduating class by Head of School Arnold Shorey. In addition, Makowski and Aine Casey spoke to the crowd in their roles as valedictorian and salutatorian.  The faculty speaker, leading the charge to our graduating class, was Mr. Luis Ayala, FA Health and Physical Education teacher, who retired at the end of this year, and the keynote speaker was Mr. Michael Dugay, FA Class of 1965.

Over the course of Senior Night and graduation,

over $250,000 in scholarships and awards were given to our graduating seniors. The Class of 2022 has left its mark on this institution and we wish them all the best as they start the next chapter of their lives in whatever lies ahead.

SEVERAL NEW COACHES MAKE THEIR DEBUT THIS FALL AT FOXCROFT ACADEMY

BY THE TIME this is printed, the fall sports season at Foxcroft Academy will be well underway. It’s always a good time of year as the days are warm and the nights are cool, and we get the chance to watch our FA studentathletes in action. We want to welcome several new fall coaches as we start the 2022 fall season, as we have had quite a few changes since last fall.

Field Hockey - Davan Clawson Walker ’99 takes over for Stephanie Higgins Smith ’88 as head coach of the field hockey team. She inherits a veteran squad that made it to the Class C regional championship game last season. Walker will be assisted by Kilee Hutchinson Salley ’17, who will also serve as the JV coach, and Taylor Dow ’09 will be a volunteer assistant coach.

Girls Soccer - Glenn Graef is the new girls' soccer coach at FA, taking over for Chris Wesley. Graef is also the new director of programming at the Jim Robinson Field House. He brings a wealth of soccer experience, both from the playing and coaching side, to the program as they continue to build in Class B. Kiara Prescott ’18, returns to the sidelines as the assistant coach, as well as JV girls coach, and Angie Burns will serve as a volunteer assistant coach.

Boys Soccer - Mike Rowe takes over as the Pony boys' soccer head coach this season, taking over for John Cornett, who left FA after the last school year. Rowe has previous high school coaching experience, most recently at Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln. Rowe will be assisted by Faleesha Gaylord (JV coach) and Joel Pratt ’90, volunteer assistant coach.

Fall Cheer - Jade Harmon takes over the reins of the FA Fall Cheer Squad after previous coach Camille Bozzelli Zepada ’17 stepped down.

The Foxcroft Academy football, cross country, and golf teams did not have any head coaching changes this fall.

Football - Danny White ’03, is back for his 14th season on the sidelines guiding the Ponies. He will be assisted by longtime coaches Gary Worthing and Ryan Dankert. His staff includes Ryan Stroud ’10, Mike Niles ’93, Ryan Taylor ’01, and Dave Henderson.

Cross Country - George Rolleston is back for another year coaching the FA Cross Country team. He is assisted again this year by Gary Kargakos.

Golf - Scott Pangburn is back for his second season at the helm of the FA Golf team.

KNOWLEDGE IN PARTNERSHIP Members of the Alumni Herd Helping Students

In an effort to support post-graduate success with our seniors, alumna Monica Miles Stevens ’13 established an alumni mentoring program called Knowledge in Partnership. During the 2021-22 academic year, we asked FA alumni to join us in this effort by serving as mentors for our seniors. Since we launched the mentoring program last September, the response from alumni and students has been overwhelmingly positive.

As Kandi Grant Martin ’93, FA Guidance Counselor, pointed out, “FA’s new mentoring program has been an incredibly valuable addition to Foxcroft Academy’s graduation requirements. So many students graduate without a firm understanding of the profession they are entering or choosing to study. By selecting a mentor and engaging in

conversation, our students are learning first-hand what their selected career entails. We heard positive feedback from a large percentage of students who completed their mentoring relationship and we are grateful to the alumni and community members who signed on with us to help foster this program.”

According to senior Aidan Currie, “The mentoring program was great! My mentor Ashley “Shay” Murray ’12 introduced me to a number of career opportunities in graphic design and new media. In fact, I didn’t decide until this year that new media would be my major at the University of Maine, Farmington.”  “It was so great getting to meet someone from my hometown who showed interest and shared some of the same passions as I do,’’ added Shay.  “I wish this program had existed when I was in high school.

It would have made the future a little less scary and would have confirmed that I was on the right path!”

Navigating the transition from high school to college or to the workforce can be challenging for any student. For students leaving a rural community such as Dover-Foxcroft for the first time, this adjustment can be especially daunting. By providing our students with an alumni mentor, we hope to ease this transition and demonstrate our commitment to our graduating seniors and their post-graduate success.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Cathy Hall in the Alumni Office at (207) 564-6542 or cathy.hall@foxcroftacademy.org

“TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR FUTURE”

On September 7th, Foxcroft Academy held its annual Fall Open House. In conjunction with the night, our Counseling Services Department hosted its annual College and Career Fair, now known as the Take Charge of Your Future event. The purpose of the evening was to get everyone on the same page with post-graduate planning.

“We know it is valuable for our parents and students to have questions answered by people in the know,” said School Counselor Kandi Grant Martin ’93. “It is essential to provide opportunities for our students to meet with college representatives, military representatives, and potential employers so that they know their options after receiving their high school diploma.”

Over sixty colleges, universities, corporations, and various representatives were at the event, including 23 Maine colleges and universities. In addition, several local businesses (John Deere, Sheridan Corporation, Gordon Contracting, JD Raymond, Bangor Savings Bank, Cianbro, Bath Iron Works, Pleasant River, and more) were on hand to talk about positions available, and all armed services branches were in attendance. The event was open to all FA students and parents, as well as students of Dexter, Milo, Guilford, and Greenville High Schools. In other words, it was a true community event. Check out pictures from the fun evening!

HORIZON SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

This past June, two students and two faculty members were presented Horizon Scholarships by Tom Lizotte of the Board of Trustees at Foxcroft Academy. Horizon Scholarships provide financial support for exceptional academic experiences not presently offered at Foxcroft Academy. Students in grades eight, nine, ten, or eleven who are (or will be) enrolled as full-time students are eligible to apply, as well as FA faculty members.

Horizon Scholarships are funded by income generated from 15 named endowed Horizon Scholarship funds within the Academy’s endowment. Approximately $11,000 is available to FA students and faculty members each year for these scholarships. This year $1,950 was awarded to students and $3,872 to faculty.

English faculty member Morgan Rublee was awarded the Jim Brown Horizon Scholarship to attend a 10-week Gotham Writers online Fiction Workshop. Ms. Rublee teaches FA students remotely from her home in Texas, and this course is to help her create a stronger Creative Writing class for her students.

Faculty member John Sylvester ’91 was awarded a grant from the Howard Ryder Professional Development Fund, created in memory by the family of former FA Head of School Howard Ryder. Mr. Ryder was Head of School from 1981 – 1994. Mr. Sylvester attended the “Level up Your Class Room” Workshop in Orlando, Florida, a workshop for welding instructors. The crux of the program is to cover many educational tools, ranging from curriculum design, development and integration of lesson plans, effective and engaging presentations, and differentiated learning techniques to engage students more effectively in the classroom and the lab.

’93, attended a National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine at Rice University

Texas, in part thanks to the Everett and Evelyn Hall Johnston Horizon Fund, both members of the Class of 1928. Hailey Holler, a freshman from Charleston, was awarded the Foxcroft Academy Alumni Association Horizon Scholarship to attend the Northern New England District Assemblies of God Leadership summer camp in Rumney, New Hampshire.

On Tuesday, May 3rd, Foxcroft Academy held a special ceremony to announce the Class of 2022 outstanding scholars at its annual Rose Award ceremony. This year, the recipients were Grace Carlson, Aine Casey, Rebekah Demers, James Jankunas, Jasper Makowski, Nguyen Nhat “Leo” Nguyen, Anastasia Peirce, Connor Plante, Jacob Reed, and Ruby Rideout. The Rose Awards were established in 1931 when Mr. Frank G. Stone was head of Foxcroft Academy. Rose Award recipients have accumulated a grade point average that places them in the top 15 percent

of their class. For the 37th consecutive year, a medallion with the Foxcroft Academy seal was presented to the recipients in addition to the traditional rose. Mrs. Priscilla White, former FA English teacher and librarian who retired after 36 years of service, and Mr. Robert Beek, who taught mathematics at FA for 33 years, conceived the idea for this permanent award and contributed funds to have the die-cast for the medallion, which has now become a permanent part of the annual ceremony.

KANDYCE PLUMMER POWELL, CLASS OF 1965

Kandyce Plummer Powell was a member of the Class of 1965. While at FA, she was a member of the National Honor Society, recipient of a Rose Award, class officer, and a member of the gymnastics, softball and basketball teams. She was also a member of the chorus, and was selected for the All-State Chorus. Foxcroft Academy offered her an exceptional education, taught by some memorable faculty.

Kandyce graduated from the University of Maine with a BS in nursing, followed by a Master’s in nursing education from the University of Southern Maine. After college she went to work at Boston University Medical Center. Her staff and patient population represented many cultures and walks of life which made it a memorable and enriching opportunity that was key in fueling her passion for greater health equity.

Kandyce has spent the past 45 years working to provide greater access to quality end of life and palliative care in Maine, nationally and internationally. Since 1992 she has been the Executive Director of the Maine Hospice Council and Center of End-of-Life Care where her responsibilities have included education, technical and advocacy assistance for policymakers, educators, healthcare professionals and the public. She has been involved in many policy efforts to address system change, with the goal of improving access to quality of life for the seriously ill and bereaved. Kandyce developed many partnerships to address these issues including the Hospice Veterans Partnership. She has been a tireless advocate for the underserved, starting a hospice program at the Maine State Prison (the first in the country) where she taught for 18 years. Because of the prison program, she was asked to speak at a Human Rights Forum in Edinburgh, Scotland, as well as to join the faculty at Robert Gordon University as a visiting professor. She has acted as a mentor to many students who were interested in creating a more socially responsive environment for individuals living with serious illness.

Kandyce lived and worked for a time in Africa at an AIDS orphanage in Otse, Botswana, which she recounts as an amazing, life-changing experience. Over her career, she co-authored many successful pieces of legislation; developed numerous programs; participated on many government task forces; chaired several advisory committees and received many awards, including a Retirement Research Foundation Award, National Hospice Organization President’s Award, Senior Legislative Advocacy Coalition Distinguished Service Award, Joe Mayo Award, Dr. Kathryn Pope Leadership

Award, Dr. Mary Chandler-Lowell Award from Foxcroft Academy, and the 202021 Maryann Hartman Award from the University of Maine.

Throughout her life, Kandyce has chosen to view humanity through the lens of kindness, integrity and social justice, and is grateful for all life has offered her. The profound work she has been able to do and the amazing people she met from all walks of life along the way taught her so much about life.

However, what she is most proud of is her wonderful daughter Heidi, who has always and forever will make her a better person.

KRISTIN STELMOK, CLASS OF 1995

Kristin Stelmok grew up in Atkinson and while at Foxcroft Academy was a Rose Award recipient, a National Honor Society member, and a Girls’ State delegate. Kristin was active in band, Latin Club, and athletics. She was one of the first women to play soccer at Foxcroft Academy, becoming co-captain her senior year. Kristin also had success in track & field, winning several regional and state championships and setting some school records.

Kristin attended the University of Maine with the help of several local scholarships and an athletic scholarship for track & field. She spent her junior year abroad at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. Several years after graduating with a BA in English (cum laude), Kristin returned to UMaine to earn an MA in English Literature with a concentration in Gender Studies. Kristin also attended French immersion programs at Middlebury College and at the Université Laval in Québec City on a foreign language area studies fellowship.

After spending a few years working as a rock-climbing guide in Acadia National Park, Kristin returned her attention to higher education. She has taught writing, literature, and women’s and gender studies at the University of Maine, the University of New Hampshire, and Plymouth State University (PSU) in New Hampshire. She’s even had the pleasure of teaching some students from Foxcroft Academy through the Upward Bound program at UMaine.

At Plymouth State, Kristin serves as co-coordinator of the English program, cochair of the Faculty Welfare Committee, and has acted as an advisor to several student groups. She helped organize the first non-tenure track faculty union, and serves as that group’s Vice-President. In 2018, she received the Theo Kalikow Award, which “honors a faculty or staff member who has significantly contributed to the advancement of women’s issues.” In 2020, Kristin received PSU’s inaugural Transformative Teaching Award, which “recognizes an individual who enacts positive change through their teaching practice—who consistently challenges, reflects on, and works to improve their pedagogy, while prioritizing student agency and equity.”

Kristin credits her education at Foxcroft Academy with much of her professional and personal success. While all of her teachers and coaches

deserve thanks, there are a few that should be recognized individually: “Mr. Dean showed us that learning could (and should) be joyful; Mrs. Mullis introduced us to the beautiful relationship between language and culture; and Mr. Willette tricked us into thinking critically and carefully about history, politics, and government. Mr. Johnny King was an unofficial counselor to many, and he kept a kind and watchful eye on us all. Finally, I have a rich and fulfilling professional life thanks to my English teachers—Ms. Dawn MacPherson-Allen and the late Mr. James Brown. Mrs. M-A and Mr. Brown taught me the skills of literary analysis and the craft of writing well. Moreover, they helped us see how our own lives and emotions were reflected in the great works of literature, leading us to develop empathy and emotional maturity. And I’ll always remember Mr. Brown talking about how much he loved his good, simple life. The older I get, the more deeply I appreciate that lesson, as well. Kristin lives with her husband and their two dogs in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

TRISTAN MULLIS, CLASS OF 2000

Tristan Mullis graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 2000 and remains a proud Foxcroft alumnus. While at Foxcroft, Tristan was a Rose Award recipient and a member of the National Honor Society. He was named Foxcroft’s History Student of the Year and received numerous medals on the National Latin Exam. In 2000, Tristan and his AP History classmates competed in the We the People constitutional competition in Washington, D.C. While at Foxcroft he also participated in a number of academic clubs and the Maine State Science Fair. Through a Horizon Scholarship, he attended a summer program on biomedical ethics at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Tristan was a four year member of Foxcroft’s football, basketball, and track and field teams. As a senior, he was named a football captain, and was named to the conference first team on both offense and defense, and received all-academic honors. He later was invited to play in the honorary Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl.

Tristan attended Bowdoin College and graduated with honors in 2004 with a major in history and a minor in biology. As his history honors project, he completed a study on the pacifist movement in Maine during the Civil War. At Bowdoin, Tristan was a member of the football team and volunteered with the local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters to mentor local youth. He also volunteered with Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project, a legal aid organization assisting low income individuals and families. He spent a semester in London as part of a study abroad program. In the summers and breaks while attending Bowdoin, Tristan worked as an EMT for Mayo Regional Hospital.

After graduating from Bowdoin, Tristan worked for the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board, investigating allegations of police misconduct and

related civil rights violations. Tristan then attended Brooklyn Law School, graduating in 2009. While at Brooklyn, Tristan was named to the Brooklyn Law Review, and the Moot Court Honor Society.

After graduating from law school, Tristan moved to Los Angeles and became a member of the California Bar. In 2013, Tristan joined the law firm Pettit Kohn Ingrassia Lutz & Dolin. He became a shareholder in the firm in 2018, and remains there today. His current practice focuses on civil litigation and legal consulting, mainly in the field of labor and employment.

Tristan recognizes his experiences and education at Foxcroft as formative to his later life. The opportunities, academic rigor, and community that the school provided were critical in preparing him for life beyond the Academy. He remains immensely appreciative of the dedicated teachers, staff, and coaches that instilled the values of hard work, graciousness, and intellectual curiosity.

FA ALUMNI MAGAZINE 2022 28
My years at Foxcroft Academy had a profound impact on my life and career. In the classroom, the teachers provided an extraordinary education, especially in English and math, that gave me a powerful combination of analytical and communication skills, laying the foundation for my career.”
GAGNON LACHANCE, FA CLASS OF ’79

KEVIN STITHAM, CLASS OF 1970

The Honorable Kevin Stitham is a proud member of the Class of 1970. Following high school, Kevin enrolled and graduated cum laude from Bowdoin College in Brunswick in 1974, the same school his future father-in-law, Stuart Hayes, Esq, graduated from 30 years earlier. Following graduation, Kevin attended the University of Maine School of Law in 1974. The following summer, he married high school sweetheart Jane Hayes Stitham, Class of 1973, and a Foxcroft Academy Academic Hall of Fame member.

In June of 1977, Kevin graduated from law school and began his 44-year career practicing what he loved. He started in Presque Isle in 1977, working at the firm Dunleavy, Adams, & Stitham, but only stayed for a few months as he and Jane wanted to get back to Dover-Foxcroft.

In March of 1978, Kevin started at C.W. and H.M. Hayes Law Firm on Lincoln Street, and for him, the rest was history. In addition, he served briefly on the Board of Governors for the Maine Bar Association as the representative from Piscataquis and Penobscot Counties.

After 21 years of practicing law, Kevin was sworn in as the Residental District Court Judge for District 13 in 1998. He continued on the bench until September 28th, 2021, when he retired after 23 plus years of service to the state, 44 years to the day after being sworn in as a lawyer.

While Kevin loved practicing law, he also had a passion for education. He enrolled in the Masters of Education program at the University of Maine with a concentration in secondary administration. He received his degree in 1982 and put it to use, teaching several college and adult education classes on both legal and non-legal subjects.

Kevin gave back to his community in several ways, from being an active member of the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club, and was the moderator for annual and special town meetings in Dover-Foxcroft and surrounding communities. In the 1980s, Kevin was also a member of the SAD 68 Board of Directors and, in 1987, was named to the Board of Trustees at Foxcroft Academy. He is believed to be the first person to serve on both boards

simultaneously. In 1991, he was elected president of the FA Board of Trustees and served in that capacity until 2002, when his son Ryan graduated from FA. In that position, he shook the hands of all graduates of his alma mater for over ten years, passing out their diplomas, meaning he saw over 1,000 FA graduates come across the stage. He received the Dr. Mary Chandler Lowell Award from FA in 2003 and returned to the board in 2006, resigning on June 1, 2016, 35 years to the day after his first joint board meeting.

In his recent book, “The Lawyers of Piscataquis County,” edited by his daughter and fellow FA Academic Hall of Famer, Stacy, the present-day Kevin can be summed up like this:

“The Honorable Kevin L. Stitham is possessed of an insatiable curiosity, penchant for nostalgia, and deep affection for Piscataquis County and its history. When not peppering visitors with questions about anything and everything, he can be found regaling his friends and family with stories, or delighting in his grandchildren. He retired from the Maine Bench on September 28, 2021, 44 years to the day after being sworn in as a Maine lawyer (having served 21 years as a country lawyer and 23 years as a trial judge). Since his retirement, he finds himself thinking more about fishing, golfing, traveling, and dubbin’ around in general. But at times, his thoughts are simply to “light out for the Territory ahead of the rest.”

SUE HERRING PERKINS, CLASS OF 1971

Sue was a standout student-athlete of Foxcroft Academy during the beginning of women’s athletics as we know it now. Sue was a four-year member of the varsity basketball team, where she was the Eastern Maine Free Throw shooting champion, one of the tri-captains during her senior year, and was named the team’s most valuable player. It wasn’t just basketball for Sue. She was a standout on the softball diamond as well, playing for the varsity squad all four years, captaining the team her senior year. In addition to softball, Sue was on the first track teams the Ponies fielded in 1970 and 1971. She was voted most athletic by her senior class. Following high school, Sue was a co-captain of the JV basketball team at Northeastern University. She was an ASA softball umpire, played competitive softball all over New England, and gave back to her alma mater as a basketball and tennis coach at FA. She fondly remembers her basketball team of the late 80’s that lost only one game in the last seconds to Schenck High School. As for those who influenced Sue during her time at FA and beyond, she credits Ernest ‘Lap” Lary, Holly Dunn Bullard, Wayne Champeon, and Mrs. Gerrish as people who helped shape her into the person she became.

PETER CHASE, CLASS OF 1979

Peter was a standout athlete on the football and baseball teams during his four years at Foxcroft Academy. Peter played on the gridiron for the Pony football team in the trenches in the fall as an offensive guard and defensive end. By the time he had reached his senior year, he and his teammates had turned around a team that had not had a winning season in his career, and they finished 6-3-1 on the year, setting the stage for bigger things to come for Pony football. He was named a first-team LTC offensive guard and second-team defensive end his senior year. He played basketball for his first three years, but he was most at home on the baseball diamond. He was a four-year letter winner for the Ponies, playing 2nd base and earning all-conference honors at that position. He helped the Ponies to many wins over his four years. Peter fondly remembers games gone by, especially a baseball win over MCI with a squeeze play at the plate and blocking a punt vs. John Bapst after changing positions before the snap. As for those who had a profound impact on his career, Peter notes coaches Dennis Kiah, Dave Clement, Ken Grant, Skip Hanson, and Gary Worthing as people that helped shape him and his athletic career.

Joel was a standout three-sport athlete during his time at Foxcroft Academy. On the football field, Joel was a member of the LTC first team as an offensive guard during his senior year, a memorable one for the Ponies as they took home the Class D State Championship, at the time, their first title in 16 years. He was also a member of the track team for his first two years of high school. But where Joel set himself apart was on the wrestling mat. For four years he was a dominant force for the Ponies, racking up win after win. He was the Eastern Maine champ in 1981, the runner-up in 1982, then he did two better the next two seasons, winning the state championship in 1983 and 1984. He was voted top wrestler in Piscataquis and Penobscot Counties and was the Piscataquis Observer’s Athlete of the Year in 1984 and was the MVP of the team. Following high school, Joel gave back to the sports he loved by coaching football, wrestling, and track. His most memorable moments as a Pony were the state championship football win in the rain and winning a wrestling state championship at home. Joel mentions coaches Worthing, Grant, and Dishaw and Mr. Ryder, Mr. Danforth, and Mr. Larson as highly influential people in his life.

While at FA, Dana balanced her strong academics with a lively social life and a love for drama, soccer, basketball, and track. In the fall, Dana played for the girls’ soccer team, where she was captain of the, at the time, a relative start-up program. The Ponies made their first-ever playoff appearance during her senior year before falling to Old Town in the first round. In the winter she played on the Pony basketball team, and helped the program get to the Class B regional final in 2001, for only the second time in program history. It was a season that team members would never forget. Dana dominated on the track in the spring as she still holds seven FA outdoor track records, including most points in a career. She was also a member of the state champion 4x100 meter relay team and a first-team all-conference selection. She credits coaches David Carey and George Rolleston as members of the FA family that helped shape her athletic career.

DONNIE BOYER, CLASS OF 2013

Donnie was a standout in every sport he participated in at Foxcroft Academy. In the fall, Donnie was a mainstay on the Pony football team. During his senior season, Donnie helped lead the Ponies to the Class C State Championship, rushed for close to 1,100 yards, and was named the LTC Player of the Year as a

star running back and cornerback. In the winter, Donnie graced the track with indoor state championships in the 55m hurdles, long jump, and high jump. For one winter season, he set records that still stand for the FA swim team. And to top that, Donnie followed up those indoor performances with outdoor track success with league and state championships in triple jump, high jump, and hurdles. Needless to say, Donnie was a gifted athlete that left his mark on FA. Following high school, Donnie played college football at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh while he majored in economics.

CLASS OF 2021 INDUCTEES

DECKER TODD, CLASS OF 1979

Decker Todd was, and still is, one of the best golfers to play for Foxcroft Academy. He was the Ponies' #1 golfer during his sophomore, junior, and senior years, qualifying as an individual for state competition. Following high school, Decker went on to Husson College, graduating in 1983, and was a celebrated golf team member. Over his four-year run playing golf for the Eagles, Decker was co-captain his sophomore year, and captain for his junior and senior seasons. He was a medalist at the NAIA District 5 Championships his sophomore year. His teams competed in NAIA Nationals in 1980, 81, and 82, and was nominated as Academic All-American by the Husson Athletic Director, and was inducted into Husson Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. Following that, Decker worked as Husson’s assistant golf coach from April 2005 until June 2007.

Peter Chase ’79 and Joel Doore ’84

SYDNEY MACKEY-HAGGERTY, CLASS OF 1992

Sydney had a standout athletic career on the fields and on the track for the Ponies. On the field, Sydney was co-captain of the 1991 State Championship Field Hockey team, the first in program history. Where Sydney really found her home was on the track. Over the course of her junior and senior years, she racked up win after win, taking home four Eastern Maine Championships for the indoor season and three regional championships for the outdoor season. In addition to that, she was State Champion in 1991 and 1992 for the 300-meter hurdles, and she finished state runner-up in the 100 hurdle race. At graduation, Sydney was awarded the Lap Lary Award, given to the top female student-athlete. Following graduation, she was a member of the University of Vermont women’s track team. Sadly, Sydney passed away in 2020, but she leaves a lasting legacy on athletics here at Foxcroft Academy, and her contributions are not unnoticed.

JOSH WITHEE, CLASS OF 2004

Josh was a standout three-sport athlete during his time at Foxcroft Academy. In the winter, Josh helped lead the Pony basketball team to three straight playoff appearances and was named to several Big East Conference postseason teams over his four years with the program. On the baseball field, Josh helped the Ponies to the 2002 State Championship game, the 2003 regional championship game, was named to several PVC postseason all-star teams, was the PVC player of the year, and a 2004 Mr. Baseball Finalist. But where Josh shined was on the Pony football team. As a starting quarterback for his final three seasons of high school, Josh helped his Pony squad, led by his coach and Dad, Paul, to a 31-4 record, winning the 2002 LTC Championship and capturing the 2003 State Championship with a win over Lisbon. He was named to several conference all-star teams and was the 2003 LTC Player of the Year. He was a Fitzpatrick Trophy semi-finalist and a quarterback and captain of the 2004 Lobster Bowl East Squad. Josh played baseball in college at Springfield College and came back to coach the Ponies on the gridiron during the 2007 season, another state championship season for FA. He mentions the 2003 Eastern Maine and State Championship games as highly memorable events for him and two perfect games as a pitcher, vs. Caribou and Nokomis. Josh credits his dad, Paul, and his basketball coach, David Carey, as those who were highly influential to him during his time at Foxcroft Academy and beyond.

RYAN REBAR, CLASS OF 2013

Ryan had a brilliant four-year run of athletics while at Foxcroft Academy. He was an outstanding wide receiver and cornerback for the Ponies. He was a member of the 2012 state championship team that beat Winslow 22-20 and was named to the 2013 Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl team. During the winter, Ryan was a member of the Pony basketball team, playing as a guard. During his senior year, Foxcroft went into the playoffs as the #12 seed, but upset #5

Oceanside and #4 Caribou, before falling to the eventual regional champion, Medomak Valley, in the semifinals. Ryan also shined on the baseball diamond. As an all-state shortstop and pitcher, Ryan helped the Ponies win the 2012 Eastern Regional Championship, striking out 11 batters en route to the title. He was named the 2013 Dr. John Winkin Mr. Baseball Award winner during his senior year, a first-ever Foxcroft Academy recipient. Following high school, Ryan was a starter for the Husson University Eagles’ baseball team. He fondly remembers his five-interception game vs. MCI in 2011, the win in the Eastern Maine Championship basketball game, and the basketball playoff run his senior year. He credits Coaches White, Chevalier, and Carey as the people who significantly influenced his athletic career at both FA and beyond.

JULIA ANNIS, CLASS OF 2015

Julia had a great four years at Foxcroft Academy on the field, court, and pool. In the fall, she was a member of the field hockey team that captured the 2013 Class B State Championship. She was the offensive player of the year in both her junior and senior seasons and was an all-state selection both of those years. In the winter, Julia split her time on the court and in the pool, seeing success with both. In basketball, her teams made the playoffs as Julia was the team defensive player of the year and number two in rebounding in the conference. Julia saw tremendous success in the pool as she still holds team records in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. She was MVP of the swim team all four years and was a 2013 National Swim Qualifier. Following high school, Julia continued with athletics playing club field hockey, and competing in several half and full marathons. Her fondest memories are winning the State Championship in field hockey and playing basketball during her junior year when the Ponies made it to the Class B semifinals. She credits her coaches, Gene Philpot, Stephanie Higgins Smith ’88 and Blake Smith ’87, her Mom Jody Merrill Coy ’88 (the 2015 swim coach of the year), Lisa Clark, and Cathy Murray as those individuals that helped mold her into a strong student-athlete.

CELEBRATING ALUMNI WEEKEND 2022

Foxcroft Academy Alumni Weekend 2022 was another resounding success. We look forward to a wonderful weekend filled with old friends and new beginnings every year. This year was even more special with the opening of the Jim Robinson Field House and the start of the bicentennial celebration.

FA ALUMNI MAGAZINE 2022
AL U M NI

THIS IS THE weekend we circled on our calendars years ago, knowing this would be the kick-off event celebrating Foxcroft Academy’s Bicentennial as we have a great opportunity to showcase Foxcroft Academy's past and present,” said Arnold Shorey, Head of School. “Adding in the fact that we opened the Jim Robinson Field House, we also had the chance to celebrate the bright future here at FA, which is something we can be proud of.”

Speaking of the field house, on August 5th over 600 people had the opportunity to witness the grand opening of the Jim Robinson Field House and the dedication of Philpot Field, the name given to the indoor turf surface in honor of longtime teacher and coach Gene Philpot. In addition to that, over 40 former field hockey players, from as far back as the 1970s, played the first official game inside the field house with the 2022 Pony alumni game. Following that, the party moved up Route 15 to the Piscataquis County Ice Arena for the alumni ice hockey game, which has seen a massive turnout inside its new home at PCIA.

Saturday, August 6th, included the Pony Pride road race, the homecoming golf scramble at Foxcroft Golf Club, the Harold W. Chase Memorial Tennis Tournament, alumni basketball (at Sedomocha), alumni soccer at the Jim Robinson Field House, and more. The town of Dover-Foxcroft celebrated its centennial with the return of the homecoming parade and street festival on Saturday morning. The day of celebration was capped off with the 2022 Alumni Banquet in the gym, followed by fireworks at Sebec Lake. And there were at least 9 individual class

reunions happening throughout the course of the weekend. All in all, it was a grand celebration of the maroon and white.

“It’s a busy time of year, but we wouldn’t have it any other way, especially coming out of the COVID pandemic,” said Shorey. “It was a great time seeing familiar faces, celebrating outstanding alumni, and showing off the new additions to our campus. It’s a good time to be in Dover-Foxcroft!”

ACA D EMY

RECIPIENT OF THE DR. MARY CHANDLER-LOWELL AWARD: MELISSA HIBBARD GRAHAM ’88

Dr. Lowell was an 1881 alumna of the Academy and went on to earn the degrees of Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Law, and Doctor of Jurisprudence. The award is given to an alumnus of Foxcroft Academy who has distinguished him/herself in their particular vocational field.

During her time at FA Melissa was an active student involved in several clubs and organizations, including the student council and varsity club. She was a four-year member of the field hockey, softball, and basketball cheering teams, being named captain of field hockey and softball her senior year. Following graduation, Melissa enrolled at the University of Southern Maine, earning her Bachelor of Science in business administration in 1992. Starting in 1994, she began her career in long-term care at Hibbard Nursing Home as the Operations Manager. She remained the Operations Manager until she and her husband Corey, also a 1988 FA grad, moved to Caribou in June 2007. The following year, Melissa was offered a job at the Aroostook Health Center in Mars Hill as the Administrator. AHC is owned by the hospital in Presque Isle, Northern Light AR Gould. She began her career as an Administrator at the Aroostook Health Center, knowing it had been deemed a Special Focus Facility (which means a facility with a history of serious quality issues) by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Within one year, she achieved her first deficiency-free survey with the Department of Health

and Human Services at AHC! And then, in 2010, Melissa moved on and began working for the Maine Veterans’ Homes in Caribou and has been there for the past 12 years. Melissa has several individual and team awards she has received over the years, of which she is very proud. Her facility continues to achieve a 5-Star Rating by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), she was the recipient of the Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award in 2019 and 2020, given in recognition of distinction by the American College of Health Care Administrators. Only 3% of facilities nationwide qualify. Her facility received the Safety and Health Award for Public Employers (SHAPE Award) in 2016. This award is for employers who maintain exemplary safety and health management systems and is presented by the Department of Labor. In 2012, her team received the Bronze National Quality Award from the American Healthcare Association/National Center for Assisted Living. In 2016, her facility continued the quality journey and received the Silver National Quality Award from the American Healthcare Association/National Center for Assisted Living. Melissa and her husband Corey just celebrated their 30th anniversary in June and have two children. Their daughter Hannah graduated from Bowdoin College, living in New York City, and working as a Senior Admissions Officer at Barnard College. And son, Benjamin, is entering his second year at St. Lawrence University in upstate New York. As for influential FA faculty members who shaped her life, Melissa says, "Ms. Philpot and the field hockey program came to mind first. When we played, we could see Hibbard’s from our field. Coach told me a few times that she could see me sitting at a desk at the nursing home working! I honestly thought that was crazy! But I never forgot that she said that to me all those years ago!!! She taught us that we needed to work hard to win but that it was okay to have fun too! She knew the right balance to create successful teams and strong young women.”

RECIPIENT OF THE TILLSON THOMAS AWARD: GARY WORTHING

The award is given to a former faculty or staff member who, in the opinion of his/her former students, served the students of Foxcroft Academy with the highest degree of professionalism. Award winners are voted upon and chosen by FA alumni.

The dictionary defines the word “legend” as an extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field. The word “pillar” means a supporting, integral, or upstanding member or part of a pillar of society. In 2017, our legend and one of our pillars decided to hang it up after a 40-year teaching career at Foxcroft Academy. Many people come and go. Students graduate, athletes move on to bigger things, and staff members leave for retirement or what they feel are new and exciting opportunities. But this guy doesn’t leave. Our legend might not be as close but he’s never too far away.

I had the pleasure of having Gary Worthing as a biology teacher, track and field coach, and driver's education instructor. I heard of the legend of Mr. Worthing before I came to FA; I saw it in person as a student and got to see it as a coworker. I’m still not sure I can put my finger on it. What makes this man almost feel like an urban legend, yet you see him every day of the week? He never seems bothered or deterred. It’s like the old antiperspirant advertisement, “Never let them see you sweat.” That’s our Mr. Worthing. He’s like our own Chuck Norris. Did you know Gary Worthing has his own diary? Yes, it’s called the Guinness Book of World Records. I could go on and on and bore you with facts and make this a piece that would make you want to cry in the end, but why do that? Let’s have fun instead. Since retiring, Gary has shared that with his wife, his grandkids, and most likely, the fish he’s caught or the wildlife he’s hunted. I will give you a few facts, then the rest of the story (thanks for the line, Paul Harvey) will be told by you, the former students, and co-workers of this man.

We have faculty move on or retire every year. We always want what is best for them. This one is special, though. Through our research, we have found three teachers who have been here 40 years. In 2014, history teacher Rusty Willette called it a career. George Rolleston is still going at 42 years, and Gary is the other one. Foxcroft Academy has been blessed with many great teachers over the years that care about their students and the building they teach in. Gary fit that to a T.

Gary graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn in 1969. He went on to college at the University of Maine, where he earned his degree in education, minoring in biology. After spending a few years teaching biology and math at Oxford Hills High School in South Paris, along with coaching football, skiing, and track, Gary decided it was time for a move north. FA was not unfamiliar territory. He would drive by the school during summers when he was younger and often thought to himself, “I love the outdoors and the woods. If I could ever find a place where I could live with that and make a living doing it, I would move”. That eventually happened. In 1977, Gary took a position at Foxcroft Academy as a science teacher and head football coach.

In his time at Foxcroft Academy, there isn’t much he hasn’t done. He was hired out of need (FA’s former football coach Dennis Kiah left right before the season to take a new job in Brewer), but it turns out he was just what FA needed. He has been a science teacher, head of the department, head football coach, assistant football coach, track and field coach, and Key Club advisor. For 17 years, he taught driver’s ed with Pete Caruso, and he has the gray hairs to prove it.

Gary’s two children, Ariel ’06 and Evan ’08, are both graduates of FA. His wife, Jane (Champeon) ’83, is also a proud Pony alum. He hasn’t really slowed down in retirement as he has a self-proclaimed project list a mile long. He’s spent time outdoors, cutting trees, enjoying nature, and playing with his grandkids. He’s stayed on the sidelines as an assistant coach with the FA football team, and is the perfect companion to head coach Danny White bringing both age and wisdom. He’s helped keep the Ponies championship contenders year in and year out.

When you think of Mr. Worthing, his calm demeanor always comes to mind. How did he get it? “When you are doing exactly what you want to do, why would you get upset? I couldn’t have scripted it better. So, Mr. Worthing, I speak for your thousands of students, student-athletes, and faculty members in saying thanks for being here for us, and I, for one, am so happy for the privilege to have gotten to know you.

The Class of ’62 took their LET’S PARTY LIKE IT’S 1962 theme to Thayer Parkway for a rousing time of memories, laughter, and sharing pictures and good times together. Ten members reminisced with Subway sandwiches (not even available in 1962) and a blast from the past, Butterfield’s ice cream sundaes.  A big shout-out to Gary Preble who traveled all the way from Maryland to be together with our ’62 Family.  After enjoying an afternoon of really enjoyable memories, we rounded out the evening at “good ole FA” for the Alumni Banquet and enjoyed sharing stories with many younger and older classes. A really great weekend - and we really “Rocked” it. Thank you to all who attended. The top picture is from our 10th reunion, in 1972 held at the Dexter Motor Lodge. Not much has changed in 50 years... we are still FA Family!

Celebrating CLASS REUNIONS

From the desk of Suzanne Cox Raymond

The Class of ’72 has a Blast! Many members of the 50th reunion class enjoyed a busy fun-filled weekend with the first event on Friday to decorate the class float for the town’s homecoming parade. While it was an incredibly hot and steamy day, the enthusiasm and energy remained high throughout; it was a great turnout with 20 classmates (plus other folks) joining in to lend a hand and/or to share a story or two. The parade the next day - wow, what an exceptional time was enjoyed by all. While we are 50 years out of the gate, for that half hour or so, we traveled through town on the float as if we were 18 again. With 25 of us on board, decked out in our tie-dyed Foxcroft ’72 alumni t-shirts (or other cool t-shirts), listening to the tunes of the 60’s and 70’s, we were groovin’ along the parade route. Many have wondered, who was that man donning the Richard Nixon mask? The one and only Scott Hamlin who does such an amazing job sharing that piece of history from 50 years ago– (the Watergate scandal!) Later that day, 18 members and other family members enjoyed a wonderful time at the Alumni Banquet where Dave Albee shared a tribute to the class. After the banquet, a class party was held at Central Hall Commons.  It was a lovely relaxed time to reminisce - not only about our school days, but memories of Central Hall as well. It was a weekend of great re-connections with sincere plans to stay in touch!

Members present at one or more of our gatherings include the following (maiden names only):  Annalee Korsman, Arnold Stevens, Becky Ladd, Bill Patterson, Bill Smart, Bruce Robinson, Carole Philpot, Debbie Nutting, Duane Warren, Ellen Anderson, Grace Dean, Herb Edgerly, Kerry Anderson, Jeff Hobbs, Jere White, Joe Perkins, John Kimball, Lynne Ronco, Mark Chadbourne, Mark Stevens, Micky Colbry, Nancy Rollins, Paul McKusick, Peter Robinson, Rick Pembroke, Robin Hill,  Scott Hamlin, Sean Stitham, Shawn Nelson, Steve Cochran, Steve Currie, and Suzanne Cox.

The Class of 1992 gathered at the fairgrounds to celebrate our 30th reunion. The reunion was smaller than the last one but there were a lot of people who have never been to a reunion before so it was really fun to see them!! Kelly Keenan came in from California... Troy Rogalinski, Dennis Hayes and Donald Smart have not been to any of the other reunions before now. Thank you to all who made the effort to come.

From the desk of Kelly Dow Anderson

The Class of 1997 kept its 25th reunion local at Tap 62 on Saturday evening of Alumni Weekend. The staff was wonderful and the food delicious. Several hours were spent laughing, catching up, and reminiscing with 20 classmates and their plus ones. We were so happy to see some faces in attendance who we hadn’t seen in 25 years! We’re already looking forward to our 30th! When you misread the invitation when it said, “so this is what 25 is like” thinking it was a birthday celebration versus your high school reunion! Weren’t we 25 yesterday?

From the desk of Ashley McKusick Buttice

Along with their families, members of the Class of 2002 gathered at the Foxcroft Golf Club during Alumni Weekend. A great turnout, it was wonderful to reconnect with classmates and reminisce.  The event was catered by Pat’s Pizza and Vail’s Bakery.  We look forward to seeing everyone again at the next reunion!

Last fall, our Center Theatre hosted Theresa Small Sneed ’76, former elementary teacher and renowned author, as she talked about her family history dating back to the Salem Witch Trials. Theresa is the ninth great granddaughter of Susannah Martin, who was tried and hanged as a witch in Salem on July 19, 1692. She has authored many books, her first three were fictional books about the Salem Witch Hunt: Salem Witch Haunt, Return to Salem, and Salem Bewitched. If you are interested in viewing her entire collection, you can visit her website at Theresa Sneed.com

At the 217th commencement of Bowdoin College this spring, Thomas College president Laurie Gagnon Lachance ’79, a 1983 graduate of Bowdoin, was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. She also delivered the Greetings for the State address which is customarily offered by a representative from Maine.  Lachance talked about how the rich histories of Maine and Bowdoin College are “inextricably linked.” The “bold and visionary leadership” of Bowdoin graduates, she said, “has shaped the unique character and heritage of Maine for over two centuries and played a hand in shaping our nation as well.”

1980’s

A 21st century American artist, Michael Conrad Guilmet ’82 lived a decade in the southern part of the US and another in Beverly Hills, CA. The influences that shape Michael’s work span a continuum of creation from antiquity to present. The art and theory of Renaissance, Baroque, and 20th century painters interest him most. From this inclusive position he excavates the knowledge to reflect his own themes and experience. Of his paintings Michael says, “My paintings aren’t about realism or imitation: I’m not a naturalist painter. There is no Art in Nature and from concept to finish, my goal is Art. A painting’s purpose is its own existence. It might show you a slice of the world through new eyes, inspire a new thought, or evoke some unexpected emotion. You might wonder what you see or question its meaning, and it might bring you back to itself again.”

Steve Roesing ’83, is the President and CEO of ASMGi in Cleveland, a managed IT services, security operations and GRC solutions and software development provider. This past December Steve hosted a webinar, Improving the Nation’s Cyber Security – The Impact of Executive Order 14028. He, along with experts from Rockwell Automation and the Cleveland Clinic, hosted the interactive discussion to examine the downstream impacts of EO 14028.

Note from Peter Ingraham ’80

A MILLION THINGS TO DO

DESPITE SOME CHALLENGES along the way, we had a record-breaking span of fundraising during the past four years. In fact, we raised more than $5.5 million! That’s a big deal, especially for a community the size of Foxcroft Academy and Dover-Foxcroft!

But the generosity of our alumni and friends can sometimes be lost in the total number of gifts and pledges. For us, the most important number is not always the total number of dollars raised, but rather the growing number of people who support Foxcroft Academy.

At FA you’re part of a community. Take a walk around our campus, check out a field hockey or football game this fall, or join us for alumni weekend next summer. You’ll find opportunities where you can get involved in school activities and places where you

can catch up with friends and former classmates.

There are plenty of things going on at Foxcroft Academy and we hope to see you and your family on campus this year. Over 300 donors supported our Building On Tradition capital campaign, allowing us to complete construction on our new indoor track and multi-purpose field house. The generosity of more than 50 alumni field hockey players and many other supporters made it possible to recognize Coach Gene Philpot by naming the new turf field and regulation field hockey field in her honor.

In the following donor report, we recognize the nearly 400 people who made a gift or pledge during the past year to our annual Foxcroft Fund.  While every donor is different, so is their connection to FA, we encourage you to stop by for a visit and enjoy what Foxcroft Academy has to offer!

Cornerstone Society

Making an annual contribution or considering a planned gift is an ideal way to show your support and appreciation for Foxcroft Academy. Members of our Cornerstone Society are recognized in two ways: one for contributions at the $1,000 level or higher each year, and second, as Legacy Circle members who have chosen to include FA in their estate plan. The Cornerstone Society also recognizes donors who have made a gift or contribution in support of the Foxcroft Fund for ten consecutive years.

We are truly grateful for such a dedicated group of donors who believe so strongly in Foxcroft Academy and our mission. Cornerstone Society members in 2022 are indicated with a maroon box after their name. Members being recognized for the first time this year are as follows:

YOU ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF FA’S LEGACY.

Allow us to be an important part of yours.

Nearly 30 years ago, the Trustees of Foxcroft Academy introduced our Legacy Circle to recognize those who choose to make direct provisions for Foxcroft Academy in their wills, name FA as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, or include FA in a charitable trust.

As we prepare to celebrate our Bicentennial in 2023, we would like to take a moment to thank those members of our Legacy Circle who had the foresight to help ensure that Foxcroft Academy would continue to prosper for the next 200 years. Gifts and bequests that have been received from members add up to a remarkable $1.2 million.  Supporting capital improvements, creating endowed funds, or helping to build on the school’s curriculum, these funds play a critical role in securing Foxcroft Academy’s future.

If you would like more information on the various ways to include the Academy in your estate plan or how to establish a named endowed fund, please contact Peter Ingraham, Director of Advancement at peter.ingraham@foxcroftacademy.org or Cathy Hall in the Alumni office 207-564-6542

REMEMBERING BILL BISBEE

Trustee, Bill Bisbee passed away on November 8, 2021.   A long-time fixture on the sideline at FA football games, Bill was always ready and willing to share his extensive medical knowledge and expertise with our Pony athletic teams.

A memorial scholarship was set up in Bill’s name for students interested in pursuing a career in the medical or health care fields. This past June, the first Bisbee Scholarship was awarded to Connor Plante, who is attending Husson University and majoring in exercise science. If you would like to make a gift in remembrance of Bill, simply mail a check to Foxcroft Academy, 975 W. Main St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME  04426, to the attention of Cathy Hall.

Thank you to the following donors who honored Bill by making a gift to the Bisbee Scholarship Fund:

FA FOOTBALL TEAM REMEMBERS WILLIAM HATHAWAY, CLASS OF 1975

In honor of William “Will” Hathaway who passed away on December 23, 2021, the Foxcroft Academy football program recently purchased a two-man blocking sled with funds donated in Will’s memory. A former starting offensive tackle on the Pony football team, Will is fondly remembered by his former teammates and coaches.

Will was the son of the late Arthur and Joan Hathaway. His stepmother, Donna Libby Hathaway ’66, his brother John Hathaway ’75, and stepsisters Sue Hathaway Karleskint ’89, and Nancy Hathaway Seavey ’90 are also graduates of Foxcroft Academy.

After graduating from FA, Will received an Associate of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maine.  He worked for many years as an electrical designer for Stone & Webster in an office in Boston, MA.  After working in Boston, Will moved back to Maine (Newport) and began working for Kleinschmidt Associates.  Some of his jobs and responsibilities included designing an electrical system for several hydroelectric dams, as well as helping to implement a netting system to save migratory eels in the St. Lawrence Seaway.  A private service for Will was held this past summer in Greenville.
