Six Months Down, Six to Go

The beginning of July indicates we are somehow already halfway through the year! The good news is that our local teams are on top, and we have plenty of sports on the horizon for the second half with college football, hockey and hoops. As of today, the Atlanta Braves sit atop the National League East at the 82-game mark, and we look forward to covering the second half of the season as they continue their push to another postseason berth. In addition, we were honored to air Chipper Jones’ number retirement ceremony commercial-free Troops march out from right field as part of a special edition of Braves LIVE on June 28. We are also awaiting results to see how many Braves Jeff Genthner tunnel during Tribute to the Troops Senior Vice President, will represent the franchise in New York City at the 84th edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star pregame ceremony. Game, which will air live on FOX Tuesday, July 16th at 7:30pm ET. General Manager Not to be forgotten is the impressive Atlanta Dream, who currently own the best record in the WNBA. June’s WNBA Player of the Month Angel McCoughtry and her teammates are playing a thrilling brand of basketball and we will continue to air games throughout the regular season. This week, as we celebrate the independence of our nation, it is important that we recognize the men and women who continue to sacrifice and fight for our freedom, as well as their families who support them at home. On Sunday, June 30, we tried to live by those words by holding our third annual Tribute to the Troops event at Turner Field, benefitting Wounded Warrior project, an incredible organization that provides programs and services designed to assist severely injured service members as they recover and transition back to civilian life. We hosted 150 soldiers from Fort Benning and the Georgia National Guard to a day at the ballpark, and Governor Nathan Deal, Mayor Kasim Reed, Adjutant General of Georgia Major General Jim Butterworth, Manager Fredi Gonzalez, and many Braves alumni players were on hand to give the soldiers the hero’s welcome they deserve each and every day. In addition to an on-field ceremony of soldiers and players, our broadcast Pictured (L-R): Major General Jim Butterworth, the Adjutant of Georgia; Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, boasted a full array of interviews with military personnel, including a wedding proposal by a soldier who recently returned from Afghanistan (she said yes). Our efforts pale in comparison to what our servicemen and Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and FOX Sports South Senior VP and General Manager Jeff Genthner women do for us on a daily basis, yet we hope this day brought some joy and fun to all who were involved. Happy Independence Day!
