Halfway Through an Exciting 2014
Every year we are amazed at how quickly we reach the midpoint of the year. In
July, we not only have Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Dream and Major League Lacrosse airing on FOX Sports South and SportSouth but we are also prepping for the upcoming college football, NHL and NBA seasons.
July is also the month of All-Star games. Major League Baseball will host their mid-summer classic in Minneapolis, Minn., at the Twins magnificent Target Field. Coverage on July 15 begins at 4:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1, followed by the 2014 All-Star Game at 7:30 p.m. ET on FOX. Freddie Freeman, Craig Kimbrel and Julio Teheran will represent Braves Country in the game, with Justin Upton (#VoteJUp) potentially joining them as part of the All-Star Game Final Vote competition. Meanwhile, Atlanta Dream guard Shoni Schimmel and guard/forward Angel McCoughtry have been selected to the starting lineup for the July 19 WNBA All-Star Game in Phoenix. Schimmel led all East guards with 25,601 votes, which was third among all WNBA players.

Living in the South, college football is a year-round discussion. Over the next month, we will be talking a lot about our upcoming original shows led by the brand-new ACC Gridiron Live (debuts Wednesday, August 27 at 10:00 p.m. ET) and the fourth season of The New College Football Show with Bates and Bowden (debuts Tuesday, August 26 at 5:30 p.m. ET). These shows along with the return of ACC All Access (debuts Thursday, September 4 at 5:30 p.m. ET) will keep college fans updated on college football action from around the country.

And talk about Great Moments: in July we will watch three Braves legends – Bobby Cox, Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux – enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. We will have three special DRIVEN episodes featuring these legends (Thursday, July 17 at 7p.m. on FOX Sports South), and FOX Sports South will be in Cooperstown to capture the festivities.

Partnership Highlights The FOX Sports South sales team recently added Progressive Insurance to its roster of clients. The company, whose Special Lines business insures ATVs, boats, RVs, motorcycles and other non-main stream insurance needs, is looking to communicate its brand message across the Southeast, using FOX Sports platforms as a means to accomplish this. Progressive will be featured both in-game and postgame on FOX Sports South and SportSouth within Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks programming.

Special DRIVEN Series Set to Premiere on FOX Sports South FOX Sports South will debut three special DRIVEN episodes highlighting the renowned careers of Atlanta Braves legends Bobby Cox, Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux on Thursday, July 17. Starting at 7 p.m. ET, the premiere of DRIVEN – Greg Maddux: A Hall of Fame Career will kick-off seven straight hours of DRIVEN programming. Cox, Glavine and Maddux will be inducted in to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, July 27.
Greg Maddux won four consecutive Cy Young Awards (1992-95), including three with the Atlanta Braves.

FOX Sports South Wraps MARTA Trains The next time you are in Atlanta, be sure to look for the FOX Sports South-wrapped MARTA cars running throughout the city. The train cars will be branded through 2014 and feature players from the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Dream.

Pro Partner Highlights Hurricanes Hire Francis as GM, Peters as Head Coach It has been a busy offseason for the Carolina Hurricanes, who will enter the 2014-15 season with new leadership at the top. Ron Francis, who has served in the team’s front office in multiple capacities since 2006, was named Executive Vice President and General Manager in late April. In one of his first moves, Francis tabbed Bill Peters as the 13th head coach in the franchise’s history. Most recently, Peters served as an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings.
Vice President of Hockey Operations, Ron Francis was appointed GM of the Hurricanes on April 28.
Coach Peters is a native of Canada and will serve as the fourth Hurricanes coach since the team’s arrival in North Carolina.
Al Jefferson Named All-NBA Third Team Charlotte Hornets center Al Jefferson was named All-NBA Third Team on June 4 after leading Charlotte with 21.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game as the team increased its win total by 22 over the previous season. Jefferson, who received a total of 191 points, including four First-Team votes by the panel of 125 sportswriters and broadcasters, is the fifth player in Charlotte history to earn All-NBA honors. Charlotte Hornets center Al Jefferson had a dominant first season in the Queen City.
McCoughtry, de Souza Named Players of the Week Atlanta Dream center Erika de Souza was named the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week on June 9 after leading her team to two impressive wins. Not to be outdone by her teammate, guard/forward Angel McCoughtry picked up her 12th career Player of the Week honor when she was recognized on June 23.

Grizzlies, Hawks, Hornets Build for Future in 2014 NBA Draft
The Memphis Grizzlies selected UCLA shooting guard Jordan Adams with their first pick (22nd overall) in the 2014 NBA Draft.

#GreatMoments FOX Sports Staff Participates in Charlotte Hornets Day of Service Nearly 250 volunteers from the Charlotte Hornets, SportsSouth and Lowe’s gathered Monday, June 9 at Hornets Nest Elementary in Charlotte, N.C. for a beautification and refurbishment project. The three organizations also donated $250,000 to the Teacher Innovation Fund, a new fund established by the Hornets that empowers teachers to successfully implement strategies to educate and prepare every child to graduate. Surprise Trip on the FOX Sports Fan Express Blayne Haley wanted to do something special for her husband Chris after he returned from working overseas as a contractor and since his birthday was on Father’s Day. She did just that by inviting 50 family members and friends to surprise him with an outing on the FOX Sports Fan Express to see his favorite team. Chris is a former Senior Airman with the Air Force and we thank him for his service. We thought their story was so great that we included it in our #GreatMoments campaign. Wes Durham Named Georgia Sportscaster of the Year For the ninth time in his career, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association named Wes Durham the Georgia Sportscaster of the Year. He accepted his award at the 55th NSSA Awards in Salisbury, N.C., on Monday, June 9.

FOX Sports South and SportSouth Win Six Southeast Emmy Awards For the second straight year, FOX Sports South and SportSouth received six Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Southeast Chapter. The awards recognize television excellence in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Asheville, North Carolina.
