Story by Erin Bates
Some people say when we die, that are souls are taken to heaven or to hell.
Others say that we are reincarnated depending on our status in life. And sometimes, we are taken on a long walk with death themselves. For me, it started with all darkness. I was floating in space and time, with nothing to hold onto and nothing to ground me.
I just looked and watched their movements. “Ebony?”
But, I could hear voices. My deceased mother’s voice calming my worries as a child, then my daddy’s words of encouragement when I was first starting my career. Finally, my friends’ and teachers’ voices of acceptance and understanding, teaching me and leading me toward the path I had wanted to pave for myself…
I turned to face Victoria. Her typical smiling face was stone-cold and focused, “Are you…?”
Had…
“Drink this,” Ian encouraged, “It will help.”
Had I given up everything to just belong?
I took the cup with one hand. It was hard to flex my fingers and turn my wrist. They felt if I hadn’t used them for a while, which was odd considering I had to have been out for a couple of hours.
There were softer voices in the background, familiar… almost. I felt myself turn toward them. “Y… Bony… Ebony…” “…Rest… Come around…” And my eyes shot open. I sat in a chair in the center of the meeting room at
14
the Town Hall. Ian was kneeling in front of me, hands gripping mine. Chuck was behind him, wielding a large axe, and Victoria stood to the side, a cup of something in her hands. Others from Everly had circled around us, some with weapons, others emptyhanded.
FVTC Student Publication | May | 2017
I opened my mouth, but no sound came out. So, I nodded, trying to tell her I was okay. Victoria passed the cup to Ian, who passed it to me, allowing his grip to loosen lightly.
The contents of the cup were red and thick like blood. It looked so delicious to me that I couldn’t help but down the glass in half a second. I breathed and smiled, “Thank you.” I dropped the cup and grasped my throat. The “thank you” that had come out didn’t sound like me
Everyone started laughing and I looked around, “What’s going on? What happened?” “Ebony,” Victoria smiled, coming forward and hugging my tightly, “That was a very human thing for you to do.” “But what’s wrong with my voice?” “It’s probably just dry,” Ian explained, “Some of the side effects of zombie-ism include drying throat, headaches, malnutrition, moaning, growling, brain cravings, and death.” “I knew about the dying part.” Ian smiled and he, along with Chuck, pulled me from the chair, steading my now quivering legs.
seated in between Chuck and Victoria, who sat next to Ian. Plates and bowls were passed among the zombies, some filled with breads and sweets, others with the “brain spaghetti,” which also turned out to be the “Specialty” in Chuck’s grocery. “How often would you recommend eating brains?” I asked. “Well, we’re zombies, so it’s not like we’re wastin’ away,” Chuck started, “But I would recommend, until yer are able to control yerself, eat a brain a day.” He handed me a slip of paper before saying, “If ya need recommendations, let Peter Thompson know. That guy has tried everything to make outta of brains.” “Could you point him out?”
“How are you feeling?” Chuck grinned.
“That guy in the far corner by Prudence.”
“Better than I was a few minutes ago.”
I turned to where Chuck pointed.
“You’ll get used to it,” a bystander called out.
Peter looked to be in his thirties with dirty blond hair, a Misfits t-shirt, black jeans, and rings on each of his fingers.
“Alright everyone,” Ian beamed, “Now we got that settled, who’s hungry?” *** “How’re the brains?” I looked up from my plate of what I thought was spaghetti, “This is brains?” “Yeah,” Victoria answered, “well, cow brains at least. Human brains are a delicacy and only to be eaten on special occasions.” I swallowed my mouthful before replying, “I thought zombies ate brains raw.” “Heavens hon, no!” Chuck frowned, “Ya should never eat brains raw. Just like any meat, ya ‘ave ta cook ‘em through. In this case, the cooks shred the meat into strips, cook ‘em, then boil ‘em, add a little salt an’ pepper, and poof, insta’ noodles!” I nodded before continuing my meal.

at all. The voice was craggy and gravely, it didn’t sound like it had been used.
I looked back at Chuck, “Are you sure that’s Peter?” “My eyes ain’t that bad yet!” I shook my head, “He just doesn’t look like a Peter to me. I guess I thought he’d be older…” “Well, ya ain’t far from yer guess. He was born in 1867, after all.” I spat my drink out, coughing as Victoria patted my back, “What?!” “It’s true,” Victoria said, “All of us here were born before, around, or after the time of the Civil War.” I looked at each of their faces. They didn’t seem that old, they looked far from it in fact. But I suppose if you become a zombie it gets harder to tell their ages. “So all of you are around your hundreds?”
The meeting hall was quickly changed into a mess hall before I had a chance to take everything in. I was facebook.com/fvtcfoxtimes

“Except Ian,” Victoria smiled at him, “He’s almost a millennium.” I’m sure my eyes could’ve popped out their sockets if they wanted to and my jaw dropped. Ian? A millennium? The guy looked like he could be passed off in his fifties! Ian smiled in my direction, “It’s true. Does it surprise you?”
“Yuck! Sorry, but if I’m going to have to eat brains for the rest of my life, I’d rather get them from a reliable source, not directly from someone’s body.”
“Yeah, a lot actually. Don’t mean to be offensive or anything, but I thought once zombies reached a certain age, they started to show they weren’t really human.”
“At least you do have sense,” Ian grinned, coming back into the conversation, “In all honesty, I was actually afraid of what might happen to you as your body changed.”
“That part is also true. But it doesn’t apply to those who try to be human.”
“What do you mean?”
Ian frown and returned to his plate, becoming very quiet, as if he was lost in thought. Victoria looked at me before whispering, “Some years ago, before this town was formed, Ian and his brother were the only zombies in the world. Ian wanted to try and be like a human and could get away with passing off as one because he wanted to. His brother, on the other hand, was a disturbed zombie. He was very violent and killed humans to get their brains for sport. When these “Mass Killings” appeared in a London, Ian had no choice but to exterminate his own brother.” I looked at Victoria, “Ian’s brother was ‘Jack the Ripper’?” “That’s right.” “But I thought the people who were killed by Jack had primarily intestines removed, not brains.”

who killed for sport. He would kill someone and take their intestines, then come back for the brains in the morgue.”
“As I said before, he was very disturbed zombie FVTC Student Publication | May | 2017
“Well… uhh…” “You’re the first, Ebony,” Victoria said, “The first human to be willingly turned into a zombie.” “You mean, everyone else who tried to stay…” “Either left or we killed them,” Ian finished, “and you might have to do the same one day. You’re one of us, a part of the family.” I was a part of one big zombie family. I couldn’t but think, Oh boy, what did I get myself into…? *** It wasn’t until late when Victoria and I returned to the Hotel de Casas. Everyone, after my transformation, had welcomed me with opened arms. Chuck introduced me to his wife, Denise, who ran the store side of the grocer, and both had a pound of cow brains for me to take back to the apartment complex. I was also introduced to the Venice family who had two children and asked if I could come by to babysit
So, I was now a zombie author and babysitter. What was next? I guess it didn’t matter. At least I could walk around without worrying about getting my head bitten off, literally.
it saying, “How dare you wake the zombie… be prepared to die!” But I forced myself to control that new part of me and hoped, with all my might that it was a wrong number. “Hello…”
Victoria and I sat in the lobby with a cup of coffee in both of our hands and talked for a bit.
“Ebony! Oh my god! I had hoped that you would answer!”
“You know something?” Victoria said after a while.
Not exactly the person I wanted to hear at six in the morning.
“What?” “I’m really going to miss your heartbeat.” I must have given her a weird look because she explained, “As zombie, we can hear a human’s circulatory system and feel their heartbeat. When you were still a human, I could hear your heart and it was… comforting, in a strange way.” “Is it because blood flows to the brain?” “I really don’t know… maybe, but I try not to think about it too much. I can get hungry easily.” I laughed, “I have a whole pound of brains with me in my apartment. Let me know and I’ll try to make “Brain burgers”.” We both laughed and disappeared into our separate rooms. After showering, I stood before my mirror, gazing at my appearance. Gone was the woman of 26 with dark eyes, peached skin, and chocolate brown hair with a form-fitting body. The woman who stood before me was hardly who I thought I would become. Pale white skin, light gray eyes, thicker dark brown hair, and skinny, as if I had lost weight during my transformation. In this life, I would consider doing everything I could to survive. But how do you survive when you’re already dead?
“Yeah, I’m fine Agatha. Just been busy moving in and working on my new book. I would’ve tried to call you if there was a delay in the publishing date.”

for them when they need time away.
“Well, it doesn’t matter. I thought I would check up on you to make sure you’re still alive.” “Okay,” I muttered, trying not to growl, but the woman was starting to get on my nerves, “Listen Agatha, I’m sorry to say this, but calling me at six in the morning isn’t exactly something I can appreciate coming from my publisher. Your job is to look over my books and tell me if they would sell, not to be my mom and wake me up! Got it?!” The line went very quiet before I heard a very small, “I didn’t realize you were still asleep…” Okay, not exactly her fault that I decided to join the “Z-Club” the previous night, but the woman should have the decency to at least wait until eight. But, I probably shouldn’t have snapped at her the way I did. I rubbed my fore before saying, “I’m sorry, Agatha. I shouldn’t be mad at you. If you want, I’ll meet you in Princetone for breakfast, my treat. I’ll even let you know what’s going on, ok?” Boy, did she perk up after that. We arranged to meet at the little restaurant in the outskirts of Everly and Princetone about eight.

After hanging up, I realized, what the hell am I going to tell her?
I was awoken in the early hours of the morning by my phone. In all honesty, if I could, I would’ve answered

Downstairs in the lobby, I told Victoria my predicament. “DuMorte? I know her,” she said after a while, “not only is her publishing company best for beginner writers, but Agatha is notorious for gossip. Even I have trouble understanding how she has kept this job for so long.” “And she’ll be thirsty for details,” I muttered. “Indeed. I’ll call Peter Thompson and have him come with you, just in case.” “Peter?” “Yeah, Chuck pointed him out to you last night at the dinner. He was sitting next to Prudy Prudence.” Oh… that Peter Thompson. “And I’ll let Ian know. If something goes wrong…” “I don’t think anything will. I’ll eat a portion of my brain that Chuck gave me last night before I go so I don’t have cravings.” Victoria nodded, “Mind you, I will let him know just to be safe because if you stay too long among the humans, you can get… shall we say, sidetracked?” “Sidetracked?” I frowned in question.
“And it’s nice to make your acquaintance,” Peter Thompson, like the gentleman he was raised to be, took Agatha’s hand and kissed the top of it, making her squeal slightly. “Honestly!” At first I thought she was irritated, but then she smiled, “Even my own HUSBAND never did that when we met! You have keeper there, Ebony!” “Uh we’re not— “ “You see, umm— “ Agatha waved her hand in dismissal before leading us to a booth. Once we sat down and the orders were placed, Agatha turned to me, “So? How’s the little town of Everly?” Right to the point already? “Ummm… Well… it’s a very nice and quiet town… perfect for writing,” I smiled, “and historic as well!” “We all know about the mansion that’s in Everly, but how are the people?” She wants me to confirm the suspicions about them…
***
I looked at Peter, who jumped in and told Agatha about the new school project, as well as the pet program that was starting at the animal shelter.
“I honestly didn’t expect for you to bring someone along!”
“I didn’t know that!” Agatha smiled, seemingly satisfied.
Okay, I see what you were saying Victoria.
I breathed in relief when the waitress came with our food.
“You’ll understand when you go.”
It was hard to focus because I could hear the thumping of Agatha’s heart beating, and others that sat around us. Agatha DuMortes was dressed in her usual getup of black and pink with the pokea-dots and a gallon of perfume that would’ve had Pequeño even backing away. I smiled at her “Well, Peter has been helping me with moving in and some novel ideas. He’s been

very helpful.”

“So, Ebony, what’s your first book going to be about?” Agatha asked. “I was thinking of writing something about the zombie apocalypse.”

Fox Valley Technical College’s Student Nursing association or SNA is a good place to make friends with fellow future nurses, network with prospective employers, and give back to the community which we wish to serve. This year, SNA was able to do all of those things and more! Whether it was wearing purple on Thursdays during the month of October to bring about awareness to domestic violence, polar plunging for Special Olympics in February, providing Narcan education on campus in March, hosting a focus group for Ascension Healthcare on April 3rd, or holding a clothing drive for the Easter Seals in April, SNA was proud to participate on campus and in the community all the while making a difference.

State Compeition
For the first time in roughly 8 plus years DECA Advisor, Jeff Meverden, had all 17 students that competed at state qualify for nationals. “This year was
a great outcome,” Meverden said. “Usually we have a couple students who do not qualify.” Not only was this a great experience for Meverden and his students, but this was also a new experience for the whole Wisconsin DECA organization. In past years the state DECA competition was held in Madison at the Madison Concourse. Due to costs changing the organization moved to Delevan, Wisconsin at the Lake Lawn Resort. “At first we all had our concerns with what the new hotel atmosphere would be like in the new hotel, the resort layout worked out really well most of the time for most of the people. The rooms were nice and the amenities, there also was a lot of places throughout the hotel to meet with group members for the newly added Wisconsin Management Institute event.” stated by President Molly Steiner. The resort was not surrounded by much compared to Madison, but they held many fun events in the resort such as a karaoke night, bean bag toss, live entertainment and they also had an indoor swimming pool. Along with all the changes, they also threw in an extra event, Wisconsin Management Institute, for all of the

students. In this event there was multiple different categories that students got put into in there random teams. They paired up students from all over the state with each other and were given a role play. From here they had to come up with how they would handle the situation and then on the last day of competition they would present to a judge as a group. This was stressful but a fun activity to get to know other students. All of those activities were a bonus to
or school that our DECA chapter would have the opportunity to take part in saving someone’s life. It was truly an awarding experience and opportunity.” stated Terence and Molly. After these awards everyone got even more excited for the next day of competition.

competing. “I was very nervous about competing,” student Hazel Reck said. “But after the first round it made me excited and ready to move on to round two.” Many students had these same thoughts. Even veteran DECA members were nervous. After the first day of competition they held the mini awards. These awards are for members who qualified in the test they had to take before they competed. Only certain events had to take a test. The following students qualified in their test:
The last day of competition was a long and crazy day for many. With the extra team event now thrown in some student had to compete in three events. Other had two to compete in. With the day coming to an end, it was time for final awards. These awards had everyone on the edge of their seat waiting to hear their name get called. FVTC DECA had member after member being called up to receive their awards. Below are all of the results from awards: • Molly Steiner- 1st place Human Resource management • Jill Hennes- 2nd place Travel and Tourism • Terence Regan- 3rd place Travel and Tourism
Molly Steiner, Emma Hoier, Terence Regan, Shawn Fordham, Stephanie Baskett, Jill Hennes, Simulata Uaisele, James O’claire, and Lavon Blackmon.
During the mini awards they also hand out other awards. One of those awards had to do with who made the most money for the National Kidney Foundation. Even though the FVTC DECA members were not in the top three they were called up on stage. It was at this moment when the club found out that during the event they held for the foundation that someone’s life was actually saved because of them. “We never thought in a million years that by putting on and hosting a seminar at

• Mauricio Contreras and Emanuel Servin | Finalist in Sports and Entertainment Marketing
• Simulata Uaisele | Finalist in Accounting and 3rd place team for Wisconsin Management Institute.
All of the students listed above will be moving on to the national DECA competition in Anaheim, California. For many this is their first time to California and will be a new and exciting experience. Some students even received scholarships to help pay for the nationals trip. Several Students received scholarships either by placing in their events or for their leadership within the organization.
FVTC Collegiate DECA brought back more that awards from this trip. Some members made new friends. Others stepped outside the box and did something they never thought of doing. Everyone came back a better person knowing they did the very best they could.

Clubs Students were welcomed to the conference, on Thursday where many of us began to become really excited for the days to follow. Our students attended Professional Development Academies, where they learned more about how to develop, present themselves, organize their thoughts, how to properly dress in business professional attire, do well in interviews, develop a stellar LinkedIn Page, and so much more. Then on Friday all of our students competed in their first round of National Competition. Everyone was well prepared and did their very best in their competition rounds, but being surrounded by such talent and only taking the top 12 roughly in each event category, it is not an easy feat to make it on stage. Unfortunately for our chapter we only had one person make it to Round 2- Finals, our Vice President, Emma Hoier- Marketing Management. Two others made it onstage medaling in their test scores for this conference, these tests are event specific, and first Business Simulation: Shawn Fordham- Retail Management, and Simulata Uaisele- Accounting.

Our experiences and education that was taken away from this conference will not be diminished, DECA has influenced each one of us to grow as an individual. Many of our members are graduating this spring or this fall, but we will never forget being involved in DECA. DECA prepares Emerging Leaders, Entrepreneurs, and Business Professionals in their respected fields, but DECA also builds confidence, friendships, networking connections, and so much more. Most people will tell you that joining DECA was the best decision they made when joining college, the opportunities, involvement, and education is endless.

Intervarsity Christian Fellowship Victor Masombuka
IVCF. What does that stand for?
IVCF is an acronym for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, an on-campus ministry group with many Bible studies and opportunities for fellowship and learning about the Bible. InterVarsity welcomes everybody- Christian or non-Christian! We have experienced incredible events and growth over the past year! We traveled to the Kalahari for a Fall Conference (Cross Training), participated in a Winter Conference, and even hosted a free concert on campus with singer/songwriter Josh Calhoun from the band Citizen Way! IVCF occasionally hosts an interactive display in the Commons to survey the passing crowd and build connections with the community around FVTC. On a weekly basis, IVCF hosts multiple Bible studies, prayer meetings, and has begun a Bible Study in the Tech Village on Monday nights! At these meetings, we dig into answering questions about who Jesus is and why that is important in our lives! Although InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is not active on campus during the summer, keep in tune for the next semesters! The club offers many neat events, for which you will want to be on its email list. If this interests you, please email info.fvtc.iv@wineiv.org .

What is IT Prodigies?
IT Prodigies is a non-Profit Organization that seeks to eliminate digital divide by opening free computer centers in poor/ undeserved communities. What is Digital Divide?
It is the gap between those that have those that have access to computers and internet and those that do not have such accessibility. It is founded by three hardworking IT Prodigies who seek to produce after their own kind. Nkululeko Victor Masombuka - South Africa; Daniel Farias Brazil and Juliet Malambe -South Africa. The founders believe that poor communities like the ones they are from have very limited access to the digital world in which we live in today. The World is a cyber-world and every single thing is computerized and anyone who is excluded from this world is at a disadvantage. We intend on opening this computer centers in Siyabuswa Mpumalanga, Sibasa Limpopo South Africa and one in Brazil Piaui. We believe that the way to reduce poverty, unemployment and other interconnected socioeconomic issues in underdeveloped countries is not necessarily through an increase in aid as far as food relief programs and many like initiatives but
32
rather investing in Education. “Computer Science is no longer just a field of study but rather a way of life and it is in-just that some people are completely excluded from this reality Author of #Strive2Succeed. While in developed countries we find most households have Wi-Fi and computers etc. People in many poor communities see computers as mysterious boxes. In other areas many people in underdeveloped nations have various Organizations and programs addressing those social imbalances but in the digital space we have very few entities that are standing in the gab. We therefore have chosen to be the change we want to see in the world. Our mission is to reduce digital divide. Our objective is to get people from poor communities to lift themselves out of poverty through the different platforms that the digital space is offering them. Regards IT Prodigies
