Everly’s Designed by Vexels.com

Story by Erin Bates

Part 3

“It’s something new we’re trying.”

“That look on her face was priceless!”

“Ever hear of freedom of speech?”

“I know, and I feel bad for telling Agatha the truth.”

Peter stood up, straightened his jacket and held out his hand, “Come along, Ebony. I won’t stand for it having you work with this woman anymore, especially if she can’t honor your wishes.”

Peter and I were on our way back to Everly, recalling every minute after I told Agatha I was writing a book on the zombie apocalypse. She had spat out her food, coughed, and looked at the both of us as if we each sprouted another head. “Z-Zombie apocalypse?” she stuttered.

“If that is how humans treat other humans,” Peter was saying, “I have no idea how you grew up like that.”

“Sure? Everyone has been getting into the classic monsters again, so why not a zombie book?” I offered.

“It’s just the way the world is,” I replied, “I can’t change the world’s mind if they’re all dead set on something.”

“Because NORMAL people don’t write stuff like that… I was actually hoping it would be some romance novella.”

“Then I’m glad NOT to be a part of it.”

“Why can’t she write about zombies?” Peter stepped in to my defense, “It’s not like you’ll be losing readers anytime soon.” “Our process is a very delicate one, Mr. Thompson. WE tell the author what people are interested in and they write a story for it. THEY don’t get to decide anything.” “That wasn’t in the contract when I signed it,” I retorted.

12

I took his hand, thankfully, and both of us left, leaving Agatha and one hefty bill behind.

FVTC Student Publication | September | 2017

I nodded in silent agreement. Although becoming a zombie had changed my perspective on how the “dead” saw the “living,” there were still similarities in how people perceived everyone. But still, since these zombies contained a spark of humanity, weren’t they all human at one point? I looked up to see Peter drive by the welcome sign, it hadn’t changed since I first came here. “Isn’t it supposed to say ‘population 101,’ by now?” I asked as we passed by. Peter looked in his rearview mirror at the sign in the

distance, “We usually don’t change it because our population varies depending on how our children grow. Some take years just to age properly, others will grow up to be adults in a few weeks.” “Wait, so, you were born a zombie?” “Yeah, a majority of us were born what we are.” “How is that possible?” Peter went silent, brow furrowed before replying, “That is something to ask Ian.” *** “Well?” Once Peter and I returned to the apartment complex, we were greeted by Ian and Victoria. Both looked concerned, considering that I was a new-born zombie who acted more like a human than what a new-born should act like. “Surprisingly, she was fine,” Peter reported, “Ebony didn’t go on a brain rampage like we thought, but her publisher is asking far too many questions for my taste.” “Good,” Ian smiled, “At least we have that to be thankful for. I knew Ebony would fit in with us well.” I couldn’t help but smile. In a way, Ian reminded me of my dad, always giving praise for those who earned it. “By the way,” I said, “I wanted to ask you something, Ian.” “Sure, and Peter, thank you again for taking the time to go with Ebony.” “Not a problem, sir,” Peter bowed low and turned to leave. “So, what was the question Ebony?” Ian turned to me. “I guess I want to know about this town,” I started, “We passed the welcome sign on the way back in and Peter mentioned that the zombies here ‘grow up’ like humans. How is this even possible?” Ian looked at me hard. The way his grey eyes looked

into mine was a little nerve wracking, mainly because he was older than me, but it seemed like he was looking right into my soul. Victoria sighed, pressing a hand on his back, “We can trust her Ian. She is, after all, one of us now. She has a right to know about the accident.” “Accident?” Victoria nodded, “After the end of the civil war, there was a deadly explosion. A chemical compound had caused a leak in the mines and it mixed with the gases that were buried deep in the ground, causing part of our town to be unsteady. People were warned to stay away from the mines until the issue was resolved.” She took a breath, “My husband, God rest his soul, was one of the men over seeing the mine when the explosion happened. After the explosion, the poisonous gases got into the air and killed everyone within a ten-mile radius. Thankfully, only Everly was effected because our neighboring towns hadn’t grown yet.” Ian nodded, “I was passing through when the explosion happened. I decided to live here after the events in London and had grown accustomed to country life.” “And it was because you were already a zombie, the poisoned air wasn’t going to harm you,” I said. “Exactly. So, I decided to see if there were any survivors. At the time, only a few bodies were still intact. Others were burnt beyond recognition; others were halfway gone. It was there when Victoria woke up.” “And it was because of the chemical explosion that many of us became zombies,” Victoria answered, “Those few who were still intact were able to be ‘reborn’ because the chemical reaction mixed with the DNA of the dead.” “And the children?” I asked. “It’s because of the chemicals that the women of this town can still have kids and they can grow up based on how many chemicals their parents had facebook.com/fvtcfoxtimes

ingested during the explosion.” I shook my head in shock. This was unbelievable. I looked at them, “And me?” Ian laughed, “Zombies will always hold some sort of power within themselves to change a human.” “Do you know why at all?” “Maybe a reflex for protection,” Ian shrugged, “Like I said, you’re the first human to want to become a zombie by choice rather than necessity.” *** That afternoon, I sat at the desk working on my book when my phone rang.

I sighed, “And the Harry Potter series are still huge today.” “That’s not the point, Bones. Monster books come and go, and their popularity doesn’t last very long. Except for zombies of course. They are EVERYWHERE!” I laughed, “That’s what I’m writing about, actually. That’s what is so upsetting to my publisher.”

It wasn’t Agatha’s number thankfully.

“You’re writing a book about the zombie apocalypse?”

“Hey sis.”

“Yeah.”

“HI Ebony! I miss you so much! How’s life treating you?”

I could just see Irene roll her eyes, “Another book? By god, one of these days, there WILL be an apocalypse and no one will know what to do about it!”

My sister, Irene, was my stepmother’s daughter after my dad remarried. She and I were as opposite as could be, but shared the same passions for the art and music industry. She was a student at Riverview College in Wisconsin, studying to be an art therapist. She would be graduating in about 3 years, but we were still very close. “Not bad, my publisher’s being a PIA, though.” Irene laughed, “Is it because of your story preferences? I mean, monsters are so…” “Last year?” I asked.

14

“Well, I mean, look at the Twilight series. The books were big for, what, five, maybe ten years? Then everyone moved onto superheroes and Disney became popular again.”

FVTC Student Publication | September | 2017

“I suppose I could give the story more thought, but I love how it’s looking so far.” “Okay, well, if I’m going to be related to a famous author who writes about zombies, I could do some art for you.” “You don’t have to, sis…” “Come on! It’ll be good practice for characters!” she snickered, “Besides, if one of my art teachers requested some sort of character development assignment, I can use those!”

“Alright,” I agreed, “I send you some descriptions of the characters and you can play with them.” “Awesome! I’ll talk later, Grey’s coming over to take me out for dinner later. Love ya!” “Love you too. Be safe.” “You’re starting to sound like mom.” We laughed and hung up, and I couldn’t help but wonder if there would be a zombie apocalypse. After all, Everly was a town that zombies thrived in, but that was dealt with more of an accident. But if someone went bonkers, could they be a threat? *** The question of a zombie going crazy didn’t get answered until a few days later. Victoria and I were visiting Chuck and Denise for lunch at the grocer when Peter came rushing in through the back doorway. “What’s up, Pete?” Chuck asked, smiling his goofy grin. But Peter was anything but silly. By the look on his face, it seemed as if he had seen a ghost, or worse. “We’ve got a problem. It’s Prudence.” Chuck’s eyes widened. He stood up so fast that the chair flew across the room. He grabbed an axe and a lead pipe. He handed the pipe to Peter. “We’ll deal with this,” Chuck said to Denise. He kissed her cheek and both men left. “What in the world going on?” I asked. Victoria looked at Denise, “She’s going to have to know sooner or later.” “Might as well, but stay close.” I followed the two women out of the break room and we stood over the grocer where Denise looked out for trouble. Below us, a crowd had gathered. In the center of the crowd was Prudence, but wasn’t. When I first met Prudence, she had an elegance about her that made

me wonder if she had come from a rich background. Now, she had slumped forward with her arms dangling at her sides. The basket which had carried her groceries had been dropped and products had rolled across the floor. Peter and Chuck were on either side of her, both with weapons at the ready. Suddenly, Prudence howled loudly and jumped upon Peter. Chuck swung the axe and the cut cleaned Prudence’s head clear off her shoulders. One of the men in the crowd grabbed the head and tossed it into a cloth bag. “Take ‘at thing out back an’ burn it,” Chuck ordered as two workers grabbed Prudence’s headless body, “I’ll call Ian.” He disappeared behind a counter as another worker came over by Peter and helped him clean the blood from his face and shoulders. I turned to look at Victoria and Denise in shock, “What the hell just happened?” “When we give into our zombie instincts,” Denise began, “we become more… animalistic. We crave brains daily and will do anything to get them, including killing our own.” “And to keep the ones already lost from leaving the town,” Victoria picked up, “We have to exterminate them.” I looked down where the fight had just taken place. Already, everyone was going back to their business. A small boy, Prudence’s son, was sitting with Peter, both were talking. The employee who had helped was finishing mopping up the leftover blood that had been spilt. “How is it that a zombie loses them self?” I asked quietly. “Usually by hatred,” Chuck had joined us at last. He looked out at his store and sighed, “Usually when a zombie becomes full of emotions like rage, jealousy, an’ ignorance, they willin’ give themselves to what humans would see as a typical zombie.”

15

“But why?” “Fear rules people. It’s ‘cause of fear that we’ve ‘ad to take precautions with how our lives are. I can’t tell ya how many times I’ve ‘ad to help kill my best customers, friends, family, even a child.” It was like a saying I read once. There are two forms of Fear: forget everything and run or face everything and rise. It was something I could understand. After all, look at all the wars we had suffered through and were still fighting. But, the question still remained, could fear in this day and age still be conquered? *** Ian had come down about an hour after the ordeal. He questioned the staff, Chuck and Denise, me, Peter, and Victoria. As far as we could tell, Prudence had suffered from a jealous rage, primarily from when I first arrived here. She didn’t respond to change very well and had been forming a committee under a guise to try and force me to leave, but that was before I had changed. Even so, anger that Ian had let an outsider by standards into Everly caused Prudence to lose herself rapidly. It only took a few days for her to lose everything; her life, her son… Ian had taken Prudence’s son, whose name was Bobby, into Chuck’s office. Peter and I sat with Victoria, Chuck, and Denise. “What’s going to happen to that poor kid?” I suddenly asked. “Usually after an ordeal like that,” Victoria smiled, “Ian will try to console the family. Push comes to shove, he’ll take Bobby and raise him as his son. If a parent dies, the town will try to find a replacement family for the kids. It’s not always easy though.” “I feel like I should be blamed for Prudence’s death. Shouldn’t I at least take care of Bobby?” “First off,” Peter turned to me, his eyes stern, “Do

16

FVTC Student Publication | September | 2017

NOT, under any circumstances, BLAME yourself for Prudence’s death. She was always filled with some sort of dislike for other people. Second, it is up to Ian to decide what will happen to Bobby.” “But, I want to help! I feel like a nuisance ever since I became a freaking zombie! I can, and will, do whatever it takes to help this community. I’m a part of it now.” “She’s right,” Ian had come out of the office, Bobby behind him, gripping his pant leg, “We can trust Ebony. She is, after all, a part of this community. Which is why, until further notice, Bobby will be under Ebony’s care.”
