The beginning of the soccer season is the perfect time for a new beginning. It’s all about fresh ideas, new inspiration, and new challenges. I love this time of year because everything is before us. Juventus is already at the top of the league, everyone is playing in the cup games, club membership renewals are happening and a new issue of zeb has just hit the stands. When there’s so much happening, it feels so empowering to be a juventina! It makes me especially proud to be a part of a magazine that brings all these elements together. We talk about Juve, the competitions, we exchange ideas (sometimes a little too fervently but that is half the fun) and embrace each other in our collective passion for soccer. Thus, enabling us to continue to grow together as a community. What a wonderful way to start!

Here we are, already on our 13th issue at the end of 2013. Lucky number 13, perhaps? Throughout the evolution of this magazine, we've written about Juve and studied Juve and celebrated Juve, throughout the highs and the lows of this team. I'm personally already looking ahead to spring, and I anticipate celebrating Juventus' third scudetto in a row--a soccer hat trick, maybe? When I was in Italy last month, I loved how boldly people would announce their soccer loyalties, and how wonderful it was to find so many Juventini along the way. It made me realize that, whether you are watching Juventus from the curva or on the big screen in a sports bar or huddled around a small television in an apartment in southern Italy, La Vecchia Signora is such a fundamental part of people's lives. She may be vecchia in name, but not in spirit.

NEW GAME-DAY HEADQUARTERS The Juventus Club DOC Toronto is excited to announce that our new Game-Day Headquarters is Lanterna Ristorante (located at 445 Edgeley Blvd., Unit 9, in Concord). Lanterna has been a staple in our community for years and not only is their management full of juventini (and members of our club), but the restaurant itself has provided many delectable meals for our club events. It is here that we will continue to watch our beloved Juventus with great pride and support, demonstrating our passion for the game. We thank Lanterna for giving us the opportunity to share in this excitement.
FAREWELL WISHES It is with great sadness that we announce the retirement of Mario Riossi, Director of Marketing, from our Board of Directors. He is so good at what he does that he is in such demand outside of our club. We look forward to his continued support as a club member and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING An important event is coming up for all Juventus Club DOC Toronto members. Our Annual General Meeting will be taking place on Sunday, October 20th at 11am. Members are asked to meet at Vanarello’s Pasticceria & Café` to watch the 9am Fiorentins vs Juventus game, followed by our AGM. We will be discussing the events of the past year as well as what future projects we have in mind for you. Now is the time to make your voice heard and participate in the direction of the Club.

In this section, we answer our members’ most frequently asked questions.
I heard that your Club Headquarters had been moved to the Vaughan Sportsplex 2. Now I hear that it’s at Lanterna Ristorante. What happened? We had the Sportplex management sit in on two of our Board meetings proposing a move to the Sportplex. The Sportsplex would give us a room (which we paid to have finished ourselves) to watch the weekly games, with no monthly rent or expenses owing, giving us exposure in a soccer community setting. In return, they would have the prestige of our club in their establishment and any help that we could give them regarding avenues of communication with Torino with regards to starting a Juventus Soccer Camp. As it turns out, the Sportplex expected us to bring in 50 people a week to watch the games - something that we never discussed before, nor guaranteed. And though we explained exhaustively that our club has absolutely no affiliation with the Juventus Soccer Camp people, and that we could only facilitate communication, there were hard feelings when the Toronto Juventus Soccer Camp went to some other organizers. Even before we moved in, there was fuss about where we had our Annual Poker Tournament (hosted yearly by Lanterna Ristorante) because, although our room and surrounding café area were not yet completed in the Sportplex, we were expected to have the tournament there. The signs that we had put up for our club (which had been discussed and agreed-upon with the Sportsplex) were even removed. We were there for our opening weekend in May but the then the Sportsplex closed the following weekend, refusing to open for a viewing of the scudetto-winning match after having assured us that they would be open. We requested that management meet with us to discuss how to go forward and we were told that they did 4

Being a member of this club is one of the most fun and wonderful things I've ever been a part a part of. I've met a lot of people and we've done a lot of spectacular things together -trips to Torino to see Juventus come vividly to mind!) In essence our club is about this: we are fans of Juventus, we are fans of soccer, we have the opportunity to watch games together and socialize together at various club events. It does not seem to me to be so complex. The reality is that there are always people out there ready to cause drama. Everyone seems to be mad at someone for some reason. I’ve been told that there are some people who do not approve of how the club is being run. I would counter that first by stating the obvious, that this club
has now been in existence for 11 years, the longest of any Juventus Club in Toronto, so we must be doing something right. These same people are not able to forward any concrete proposals for the betterment of this club. I find that this always happens with people who do not genuinely want to help, but only those to want to hamper, both our growth and our happiness. People who want to see things improve - and there is always room for improvement - send e-mails or call or come to speak to the board members. I believe that the foundation of a good club (and really any type of social relationship) lies in open discourse. Over the years, as a member of the Board, I have received many messages from members, asking ques-
tions, requesting exp la na tio n s, suggesting improvements, and r e co u n ti n g their happy stories. This is how we all grow and learn. Happy members make a happy club. As we embark upon a new season of soccer, let's remember why we find ourselves together. We are likeminded individuals who love Juventus, enjoy soccer and we have the opportunity to get together and enjoy each other's company. These are all things to be happy about. Terminata la stagione estiva con zero “tituli” all’attivo, per la gioia di buona parte dei media, la Vecchia Signora al primo appuntamento stagionale che contasse qualcosa e’ riuscita a mettere in bacheca il quarto titolo dell’era Conte. Non solo, con l’inizio del campionato, andando a vincere a Genova e poi battendo ancora la Lazio ha dimostrato di avere quella “fame” di vittorie tanto decantata da Antonio Conte che, tanto per cambiare riesce sempre a toccare i tasti giusti per spronare la squadra a dare piu’ del massimo. Rifilando ben otto goals, tra Supercoppa e campionato, alla Lazio che storicamente ha sempre rap-

presentato una sorta di “bestia nera”, la Juventus ha lanciato un segnale forte a tutti i nemici e detrattori che durante la stagione dei “tituli” di cartone si erano sbizzarriti ad accusare la squadra, cominciando con un Tevez con qualche chilo in piu’ sino ad arrivare ai presunti contrasti tra Conte e la dirigenza, causa il mercato estivo. In attesa di sfidare l’Inter a San Siro, la pausa per le Nazionali oltre ad averci regalato la qualificazione per i prossimi Mondiali in Brasile, ci ha ricordato che in una stagione ricca di impegni, la Juventus potrebbe avere avversari ben piu’ insidiosi delle squadre che dovremo affrontare: gli infortuni. Con Vucinic e Barzagli in dubbio e Caceres fuori per quaranta giorni, aspettando il rientro di Marchisio, Conte dovra’ cominciare a fare i conti con un turn-over per il momento forzato. Sara’ forse l’occasione giusta per vedere all’opera i nuovi acquisti Ogbonna ed il “bidone”, a detta di alcuna carta stampata, Llorente. E perche’ no sara’ l’occasione giusta per l’incompiuto Giovinco o l’incompreso Quagliarella. Ovviamente l’auspicio del
tecnico salentino, nonche’ di noi tutti tifosi, e’ che la squadra possa arrivare al prossimo Gennaio in testa al campionato e con la qualificazione agli ottavi di CL. E siamo certi che in quel caso la Societa’ interverra’ sul mercato per rinforzare ulteriormente la squadra, laddove ce ne fosse ancora bisogno, per affrontare una seconda parte di stagione che si spera sara’ ricca di impegni e, chissa’ che, oltre al terzo scudetto, non porti una sorpresa dalla Champions League. Gia’ la CL, a noi tanto cara, che ci riporta indietro di qualche anno quando la nostra cara signora sedeva puntualmente al tavolo delle grandi d’Europa, cosa che ha ricominciato a riassaporare la scorsa stagione quando e’ arrivata tra le prime otto. Se e’ vero come dice Conte che gli altri possono spendere e che a guardarli la Juventus sembra una macchina a cospetto di un carro armato, e’anche vero che, con Antonio Conte alla guida, sembra non manchi molto per raggiungere la vetta dell’Europa. On September 15, 2013 the City of Torino finally gave Juventus F.C. the Continassa Area adjacent to the Juventus Stadium. This is the area that Juventus plans on making its new training center, media center and new registration office. The Acquisition Agreement allows Juventus to secure the land for 99 years (with the option of renewing). With this comes plans for shops, residences and restaurants. Not only does this allow Juventus to rejuvenate the area - which was in a state of total decay - but it represents an important milestone for the future of the club.

Juventus claimed the Italian Supercup after a well deserved 4-0 win over Lazio. The first half began at a frantic pace as both teams tried to show that they were in the game, not only with their feet but with their heads. Pogba’s goal did not do anything to reduce the intensity of the game. It was three goals within a six minute period in the second half that were truly decisive. Goals by Chiellini, Lichtsteiner and then Tevez proved Juventus’ total dominance on the field. The bianconeri intended to not only begin the 2013-2014 soccer season with one piece of silverware in their pockets, but to demonstrate that their ambitions for the season were only beginning to be satisfied.

Copenhagen vs Juventus 1-1
La Champions League comincia male per la Vecchia Signora con un pareggio contro il Copenhagen che lascia molti dubbi per tutti i suoi tifosi. Per un tempo, la Juventus si é lasciata dominare in campo anche se era evidente che i bianconeri erano superiori ai suoi avversari. Basta un pò di pressione dai danesi e fanno gol. I bianconeri hanno capito che buttare via un tempo a questo livello é imperdonabile e rientrano in campo con un nuovo vigore. Questa volta sembrano consapevoli della loro qualità. Cos ì la partita poi diventa interessante e gli spettatori vedono la Juventus che aspettavano. Domina la palla per lunghi tratti ed eventualmente arriva il pareggio di Quagliarella, Però rimane sempre l’amaro in bocca del primo tempo. Aspettavamo che la partita si gestisse meglio, con più tattica. Speriamo che la Juve abbia capito che bisogna cominciare aggressivamente e non diventarlo solo quando si é costretti.

Roberto Mancini’s Galatasaray snatched a late equaliser from Conte’s Juventus, leaving the latter fuming. Drogba took advantage of a series of errors in the Juve defence to go into the lead, while a controversial Vidal penalty tied up the score. When Quagliarella sent the bianconeri into the lead 3 minutes from the end, most believed it was all wrapped up. But then Drogba appeared a minute later to equalize. Though Conte appeared visibly outraged at the final result, his team lacked inspiration in attack and would have benefited from some more assured playing.

Sei sorpreso dal fatto che Roma, Napoli e Inter sono partite molto forte? O se pensi che abbia influito anche la differenza di calendario rispetto a voi? “No, assolutamente, non mi ha sorpreso questo, perché basta andare un po’ indietro di qualche settimana ed ascoltare quello che ho detto. Ho detto che quest’anno sarà comunque un cammino molto complesso, perché ci sono squadre
che si sono rinforzate e che possono ambire alla vittoria dello Scudetto. Avevo parlato del Napoli, della Roma, dell’Inter, che non hanno le coppe e hanno la possibilità di lavorare bene. Avevamo parlato della Fiorentina, del Milan, della Lazio. Quindi non sono assolutamente sorpreso, anzi, é per noi una conferma del fatto che sia un campionato stimolante, intrigante, dove dobbiamo essere molto bravi per fare un ottimo campionato, per cercare di essere competitivi e cercare di vincere. Tutto nella norma, anzi, dico, bene cos ì, perché alla fine non ho detto delle fesserie (ride,ndr)”. Che effetto ti fa sentir parlare - crisi é una parola grossa – di Juve in difficoltà dopo due pareggi, con un calendario cosXX importante? “É normale amministrazione, perché siamo la Juve. quando abbiamo fatto tre pareggi in Europa, nelle prime tre partite, quando all’inizio avevamo rischiato qualche vittoria, cos ì come quando abbiamo perso in casa contro l’Inter. Normale amministrazione, chi é alla Juventus sa benissimo che ci sono tante grandissime pressioni e bisogna essere bravi a convivere con queste, non farsi schiacciare, anzi, usare questo tipo di pressioni come un’arma in più per cercare di tirare fuori sempre tutto. Quindi, molto molto sereno da questo punto di vista, niente di nuovo all’orizzonte”. Dopo il pareggio di Copenaghen, c’PP stato qualche tifoso, sui forum, eccetera, che ha messo in dubbio la capacità della Juve di affrontare certe partite, avanzando l’ipotesi che la Juve sia forte soprattutto in campionato, ma quando va in Europa si trovi in difficoltà ad imporre il proprio gioco… “Sai, queste sono le stesse considerazioni che si facevano un anno fa, stesse identiche, stesse identiche, quindi non mi sorprende neanche questo. Sono proprio uguali, ugualissimi. Mi ricordo che si titolava: la Juve viaggia in campionato e zoppica in Europa. Poi abbiamo vinto contro il Chelsea 4-0 (3-0, ndr) e tutti: Juve regina d’Europa, pronta a vincere la Champions. Ma questa é l’Italia, questo é il nostro mondo. Viviamo di eccessi e di negatività massime. Ripeto, noi dobbiamo sempre essere molto eq u i li b ra ti e gestire queste
pressioni, perché siamo la Juventus e ciò significa e comporta questo. Tutto all’eccesso o magari tutto da buttare, perché comunque quando si é in mezzo, le cose equilibrate, non servono a nessuno, nel senso che non servono a far parlare e non servono a niente. Però, ripeto, questo senza essere polemico, siamo molto sereni perché sono le stesse identiche cose ascoltate un anno fa. Ma abbiamo un anno in più d’esperienza e quindi dobbiamo essere bravi a gestire sempre tutte le situazioni”. Rivedendo la partita di Copenaghen, ci metterebbe la firma per giocare la stessa partita con il Verona? Poi, visto che a Copenaghen ci ha dato un aiuto dicendo che avrebbero giocato Buffon e Pirlo, se anche oggi ci può dare un altro aiuto, magari altri due nomi per domani… “Sai, se dovessi rigiocare di nuovo una partita come quella di Copenaghen, e dovessimo trovare anche domani un portiere che para tutto, sprecando tantissime occasioni, ti direi di no, perché sinceramente é bello giocare a calcio, é bello creare bel gioco e tutto, però alla fine la palla la devi… Come tipo di partita, ribadisco che – l’abbiamo rivista anche assieme ai ragazzi – nella fase di possesso noi abbiamo fatto molto molto bene, perché abbiamo creato tantissimo, tutte
situazioni che avevamo studiato e che si sono verificate. Infatti potevamo segnare un po’ tutti nella partita con il Copenaghen, anche sui calci da fermo siamo stati molto bravi avendo alzato la linea di altezza con l’inserimento anche di Peluso. Solo che siamo stati anche meno bravi nell’unica palla calciata, una punizione da quaranta metri, in cui un rimpallo ha favorito un giocatore del Copenaghen. L’atteggiamento nella fase di possesso mi é piaciuto perché la squadra é stata molto positiva, mentre in fase difensiva non siamo stati bravissimi; anche se abbiamo subito un gol in una palla inattiva, abbiamo visto che alcuni movimenti, alcune scalature, non sono state eccezionali e precise come devono essere. Ma quando parlo di fase difensiva, inizio dagli attaccanti, passando per i centrocampisti e fino a coinvolgere i difensori”. Llorente é stato l’argomento di questi giorni, un argomento che credo non ti faccia molto piacere perché sottintende delle critiche a te, visto che non lo utilizzi. Tra domani e mercoled X potrebbe giocare da titolare? O potrebbe essere preso in considerazione per giocare qualche minuto. “Sai… (ride, ndr). Il fatto che io mi debba prendere delle critiche perché non utilizzo Llorente, cioé, sinceramente, lo trovo ingiusto. Io posso prendermi delle critiche se la squadra non ottiene dei risultati, se non gioca bene, ma non perché utilizzi o non utilizzi un giocatore, perché a questo punto potrei anche prendermi delle critiche perché non sto utilizzando tanto Giovinco, perché non sto utilizzando tanto Padoin, perché non sto utilizzando….chi é che non ha giocato tantissimo? Prima Quagliarella… cioé, io posso ricevere

Juventus-Fiorentina 2-0, 24ª giornata (9 febbraio 2013) Con questa vittoria la Juve allunga in classifica, grazie al pareggio del Napoli in casa della Lazio. Il vantaggio è siglato da Vucinic, mentre il raddoppio è realizzato da Matri, che riesce a tirare in porta con il piede scalzo dopo che la sua scarpa gli è volata via.

Juventus-Roma 4-1, 6ª giornata (29 settembre 2012) La Roma di Zeman viene demolita dal gioco della squadra di Conte, che già nei primi 20 minuti chiude la partita con una punizione di Pirlo, un rigore di Vidal e un’imbucata di Matri. Nella ripresa segnano Osvaldo per la Roma e Giovinco. Il “maestro” lascia lo stadio a testa bassa. 8. Juventus-Napoli 2-0, 8ª giornata (20 ottobre 2012) A Torino va in scena lo scontro tra le due squadre in testa alla classifica. Brutta partita, risolta nell’ultimo quarto d’ora dai nuovi entrati Caceres, che sblocca di testa su angolo di Pirlo, e Pogba, che raddoppia con un magnifico sinistro da fuori area che fa esplodere i tifosi.

Al San Paolo ancora una volta non riusciamo a vincere, pur passando in vantaggio con un colpo di testa di Chiellini dopo 10 minuti. Ma Inler poco prima dell’intervallo pareggia e il risultato non si sblocca più. 4. Juventus-Catania 1-0, 28ª giornata (10 marzo 2013) Un buon Catania riesce a bloccare i Bianconeri per 90 minuti. Ma nel primo minuto di recupero il “soldato” Giaccherini, da poco entrato, riesce finalmente a buttarla in rete e a far urlare il presidente Agnelli e tutti i tifosi. Palacio pareggia al 54°, ma l’equilibrio dura soltanto 6 minuti, per merito di Matri che ci porta nuovamente in vantaggio. 1. Juventus-Palermo 1-0, 35ª giornata (5 maggio 2013) Un nuovo 5 maggio per il popolo bianconero. L’ottava vittoria consecutiva in campionato sancisce la matematica vittoria del 31° scudetto a tre giornate dalla fine. Il gol partita di Vidal, il migliore per tutta la stagione, arriva dal dischetto a mezz’ora dalla fine e dà il via ai festeggiamenti per un successo come sempre meritato sul campo.

Dieier Deschamps: due volte ex Nella seconda metà degli anni ‘90 tanti sono stati i grandi campioni che hanno vestito la maglia bianconera. Stelle che risplendono nel firmamento della storia juventina grazie alla luce delle vittorie e del bel
calcio. Tra i protagonisti di quell’indimenticabile periodo c’è sicuramente il francese Didier Deschamps, eroe in patria per aver guidato da capitano la nazionale transalpina alla vittoria del Mondiale del ‘98 e dell’Europeo del 2000. Guardando alla sua carriera, pochi calciatori a livello internazionale possono dire di aver raggiunto gli stessi traguardi. Il suo talento emerge evidente fin da giovane, tanto che il suo debutto nella massima serie francese avviene a soli 17 anni con la maglia del Nantes. Quando nel ‘94 arriva alla Juventus ha 25 anni e alle spalle già tante vittorie importanti e record raggiunti. Con i Bianconeri non fa altro che arricchire la propria personale collezione di trofei, dando un fondamentale contributo ai successi della squadra di Marcello Lippi nei cinque anni in cui rimane a Torino. Le sue caratteristiche sono l’abilità nel contrasto e nel pressing a tutto campo e uno spiccato senso tattico e della posizione che gli consente di integrarsi con qualsiasi compagno. É inoltre uno di quei giocatori poco appariscenti, ma che fanno sentire sempre il peso della 30 zeb issue #13
loro grande generosità agonistica. Nel ‘99, come altri suoi compagni, entra in contrasto con Lippi e questa situazione porta alle dimissioni del tecnico viareggino. L’estate successiva lascia Torino, per raggiungere gli amici Vialli e Desailly al Chelsea. L’esperienza inglese non si rivela molto fortunata e l’anno seguente passa al Valencia, ma anche qui resta soltanto una stagione, al termine della quale decide di dare l’addio al calcio giocato ad appena 32 anni. Immediatamente intraprende la carriera di allenatore, sedendosi sulla panchina del Monaco. Dopo una prima annata molto negativa, chiusa al 15° posto in campionato, la sua squadra inizia ad ingranare, tanto da arrivare nel 2004 a sfiorare la vittoria in Champions League, persa in finale contro il Porto di Mourinho. L’estate del 2004 Deschamps è il maggiore candidato a sedere sulla panchina della Juventus del dopo Lippi, prima che ci sia l’inaspettata decisione di ingaggiare Fabio Capello. L’appuntamento, però, è solamente rimandato. Nella movimentata e triste estate del 2006, infatti, la nuova dirigenza bianconera lo chiama per guidare la Juventus in serie B. Dopo un avvio difficoltoso, la squadra inizia a risalire posizioni in classifica e a recuperare i punti di penalizzazione, trascinata dal capitano Del Piero. Tuttavia, raggiunta la matematica promozione a due giornate dalla fine del campionato, Didier rassegna le proprie dimissioni dalla Juventus. A causare la rottura sono le divergenze con la dirigenza riguardo all’impostazione da dare al calciomercato. Decisione presa forse troppo in fretta, come ammesso successivamente
dallo stesso allenatore. Per due anni resta fermo, in attesa della chiamata giusta, che arriva nel maggio del 2009 da parte dell’Olympique Marsiglia. La prima stagione si conclude trionfalmente con la duplice vittoria della coppa di lega (primo trofeo per la società dopo 17 anni di digiuno) e del campionato francese (18 anni dopo l'ultimo successo). Seguiranno altre due coppe nazionali e due supercoppe. Come conseguenza dei tre anni di successi a Marsiglia, subito dopo gli Europei del 2012 viene chiamato alla guida della nazionale francese per sostituire Laurent Blanc, con la prospettiva di un contratto biennale. L’avventura con i “Blues” finora non è stata troppo esaltante, a causa di qualche passo falso e un po’ di problemi in zona d’attacco. Il girone di qualificazione ai Mondiali di cui fa parte la Francia è dominato dalla Spagna, che sicuramente passerà come prima classificata. I transalpini dovranno badare a difendere il secondo posto dalle minacce della Finlandia, per poi concentrarsi sui play-off in programma il 15 e 19 novembre. In caso di qualificazione, il contratto di Deschamps sarà prolungato per altri due anni, ma il futuro dopo i Mondiali del prossimo anno dipenderà sicuramente anche dai risultati che la Francia saprà ottenere in Brasile.

Ciro Ferrara has had an incredibly rich career. After 10 years with Napoli, he moved to the Torino giants, Juventus. After eleven years with the bianconeri, he added Six Serie A Championships, one Champions League Title, one Intercontinenal Cup, one European Super Cup, one four Italian Super Cups and one Italian Cup to his list of accomp l i sh men t s , making him one of Juventus' most prolific center backs in history. This illustrious de-
fender also had 49 CAPs with the Italian National team, was an Italian National Technical Asistant and even came back to coach Juventus in 2009. He is remembered by all as one of the greatest world class Italian defenders of all time.
