Though we’ve been publishing our magazine now for four years, every time that a new issue is being put together, I feel a certain surge of excitement. On every page I see how far we’ve come with layouts, articles, photographs, and member feedback. I’m thrilled that we continue to be able to put out a product that interests our readers. It is refreshing when we can all converse about common interests freely and honestly in this forum. Though it takes many hours and hard work to put together a magazine, I can truly say that it is a labour of love. After all, WE are worth it.

THIS IS A BILINGUAL MAGAZINE You can write to us in either English or Italian with your comments, suggestions and submissions. This magazine is for you so we are committed to making you comfortable to write in whatever language is easiest for you. 2

This time of year is always an interesting one. Winter is fading, spring is settling in, and the seasonal handover from European to North American soccer has begun. We can look back over Juventus' past season with satisfaction, with jubilation, and with a smug sense of knowing that La Vecchia Signora would prevail, just as we expected she would. Alternately, we are looking ahead to the MLS season, hoping that TFC will hand us the same exhilarating season that Juve gave us. And of course, let's remember that in just a couple of months, we'll be cheering on many of our bianconeri boys as they set aside their striped jerseys and put on azzurri ones. So much to look forward to, and so much of which to be proud. Forza Juve, Forza TFC, and Forza Italia!

The Juventus Club DOC Toronto lost a beloved member recently. Pierino Macri was our long-time friend and a former member of the Board. We had many great times together at club events. We will never forget how he connected with us and touched our lives. Goodbye dear friend.

Pierino Macri (1950-2014)

Addio amico! Marisa Lombardi

When thinking about Juventus recently I realized that there are really many, many reasons to love Juventus. The bianconeri are Italy’s favourite team, boasting a fan base of at least one third of the country. How could so many people be wrong? Juventus has always enjoyed a strong presence in the Italian National Team. La Vecchia Signora is one of the few teams in Italy that by and large play with Italian players. This makes the team an optimum pool from which to select players for the azzurri. Juventus is in fact the only team in Italy to have fielded a player in every World Cup to

date. From the ranks of Juventus have come some of the best players in the world as is demonstrated by the numerous Juventus players being honoured by FIFA’s “Golden Ball” Award. Our beloved Alessandro Del Piero is by all accounts the greatest Juventus player of all time - and it doesn’t look as though any of his records will be broken anytime soon. Juventus is the most titled club in Italy. I could list all of our honours but I only have this little space to work with. Since calciopoli, the Juventus management has been able to revolutionize the team. We have money, a new stadium, and dedi-

cated players. The fut u r e d e f i nitely l o o ks bright. To top it all off, juventini have a spirit that can never be defeated. After all this reflection, I remembered that, “you don’t pick a team, it picks you.” The conclusion? Juventus and I were simply destined for each other. Tiziana Pace President

Right now the bianconeri are in a great position to pull off a hat-trick of scudetti. But even their seasoned Coach Antonio Conte remains rather cagey when it comes to speaking of these things. He knows from his own experience that the best side doesn’t always win and that the unpredictability of opponents goes a long way in tipping the championship scales in various directions. “The fact that our opponents, in spite of having achieved something extraordinary, are strengthening further definitely leaves me unable to relax,” Conte remarked. Juventus could be on the cusp of something special. Only time will tell. Tiziana Pace

Juventus Headed Down Under Bianconero legend Del Piero to captain A-League All Stars “Juventus has a responsibility to its millions of fans to present our heritage and our qualities in the best way possible,” said Mr. Agnelli.

Juventus are set to play the FOXTEL ALeague All Stars in Sydney on August 10 in a pre-season match up. The highly anticipated game will be the first time Alessandro Del Piero has lined up against the bianconeri since leaving the club in 2012.

Juventus-ADO Den Haag: Amici per Sempre Fans celebrate 25 years of friendship It’s been said that sport has the power to unite us. And in November 1988, fans of the Dutch team ADO Den Haag and Juventus formed a friendship that’s lasted 25 years. The North Side (ADO) ultras, with a passion for the vecchia signora, traveled to Liège, Belgium, to watch the UEFA Cup match between Club Liège and Juventus. Since then, the North Side and Viking (Juventus) ultras have visited each other to watch matches and even play a supporters tournament. To mark the 25th anniversary, Juventus fans traveled to The Hague, Netherlands, to watch ADO Den Haag-Feyenoord in Janurary 2014; while the Dutch fans watched the bi anconeri beat Fiorentina 1-0 in March. With the World Cup in Brazil coming up in a few months, everyone is hoping that this year’s tournament will prove to be the best one yet. Zeb magazine takes a peak at a few players and teams that may well end up making the difference.

PLAYERS

TEAMS

Lionel Messi It would be an understatement to say that a lot is expected of Lionel Messi, though few would suggest that the tournament would be a career-defining moment for the Argentine. With Barcelona, he has shown himself to be both a leader on the field and an integral part of a multi-player based-team. Though many compare him to Diego Maradona, the young Messi has already surpassed his elder in career achievements, something that Maradona himself is quick to acknowledge. The Argentines are not expecting too much of Messi. They are simply awaiting more of the same extraordinary plays that have made up his career up to now.

Brazil Hosting the tournament, Brazil appears to be the strongest candidate on the list of prestigious teams hoping to take home the prize. Players such as Neymar, Hulk, Jo and Robinho stack up the front with some formidable striking power backed up by a hefty attacking midfield featuring Hernanes, Oscar and Paulinho. The icing on the cake is a steadfast defence that has conceded few goals in pretournament play.

Neymar A lot of pressure is on Neymar this World Cup as the Brazilian has the advantage of playing the tournament at home. "This is Neymar's first World Cup and nobody knows exactly what is going to happen. It is a big responsibility for him," said Pele. At 22 years of age, the young Brazilian still has a lot of time to define himself. Yet who could argue that a win at Brazil 2014 would be a wonderful way to continue the march forward. Cristiano Ronaldo No-one has ever brought the talent of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo into dispute. The real question is whether or not his teammates can provide him with the adequate support that he needs. There seems to be a distinct gap between Ronaldo and his teammates and it’s a lot for a player to handle when so much hinges on him. When there is so much concern over the fitness and form of the rest of the team, Ronaldo will have to struggle to pull his team up. Andrea Pirlo Being Andrea Pirlo’s last World Cup competition, it stands to reason that the Italian will give it his all. Pirlo has been an integral part of the azzurri team for the last decade. Though he’s getting on in years, it’s his game-play, not his speed, that he’s known for. His crafty moves make him a player most defences should fear.

Argentina The Argentine’s can easily match the Brazilians with the striking power of Messi, Aguero and Higuain. Their midfield, however, lacks the power of the Brazilian midfield and their defense struggles at the best of times. Germany The German team promises to lay down a serious challenge at the tournament. Schurrle, Ozil, and Reus are just some of the players packing a fierce midfield. Along with strikers of the caliber of Klose and Gomez, the Germans look to put forth a formidable team. Italy Going into the tournament, Italy will be fielding a team mixed with both youngsters and veterans. With a standout defence boasting Buffon, Chiellini, Barzagli and Bonucci, playing behind an experience midfield of Pirlo and Marchisio, the Italians have a lot to offer. By far the most interesting part of the azzurri is the options they have up front. What remains to be seen is if Prandelli makes the right choice, and if those selected strikers can make the difference.

THIS ISSUE FOCUSES ON

Words of inspiration “I began by playing for the biggest club in the Lorraine region, went on to the biggest club in France and ended up with the biggest in the world.” - Michel Platini “I'm proud to be a juventino, to be a bandiera, like you define me to be often, in reality I'm just a small part of a big black and white bandiera that grows with the years and if you look closely your name is part of it.” - Alessandro Del Piero “Juventus have given me everything. I acquired my winning mentality here; the one which makes you say every game is a battle. I've learnt to be demanding with myself and how to meet difficulties and overcome them.” - Pavel Nedved “When we first played in the Champions League they [Juventus] were the top team, they were who we were aspiring to be like.” - Ryan Giggs, Welsh footballer “Juve will always be Juve. There are a number of teams that have a winning spirit built in and Juventus are one of them.” - Emilio Butragueno, former Spanish player 32
