t all started with the color pink. Not only is pink the international color for breast cancer support, it’s also the brand color for Franchise Dictionary Magazine. With that in mind, I created this month’s “Women in Franchising” issue, which showcases our first-ever 50 Women of Wonder (WOW). These remarkable female franchisors are making a difference with their brands; they inspire and awe us. Turn the pages and be WOWed! Yours in FRAN-ship,

mazing! Awestruck! Floored! That’s how I felt listening to the stories of women in franchising for this issue. We have some tremendously talented women building businesses and franchises in what was once a nearly all-male industry. Balancing business, family, and marriage has become an Olympic sport, and the women featured in this, our first 50 WOW issue, are on their way to winning a gold medal for crossing the finish line with tremendous success! Ladies, you make us proud, and it was a pleasure bringing your stories to light. Happy reading,

the \ ’buhz-’ \ noun 1 An atmosphere of excitement and activity 2 What franchise experts are talking about
PROVIDING SECURITY Surveillance Secure has been a proven security industry leader since 2006, serving commercial clients throughout the country. No matter what area we are serving, our teams provide the right technology, professional installation, and integration, which is always backed by consistent, dependable service and support as part of our brand’s commitment to providing outstanding client services. After nearly 15 years in the business, they have grown dramatically and in 2019 decided to launch a franchise opportunity that would bring Surveillance Secure, its services, technology, and installation practices to reach more clients in the U.S. If you are an investor looking into security franchise options, you probably don’t need much convincing to recognize that this is the best time to own a commercial security business. It is precisely why Surveillance Secure is the ideal partner for your security franchise journey. In this day and age people are more anxious about personal safety than ever before. Businesses, schools, and other facilities have concerns about access control, active shooters, and other security issues that seem to be a daily occurrence. It is an area of need for the general public, and now is the time to fill that need. So the real question is: How can you enter the security sector the smart way? Franchising is the most proficient way as you will be able to start immediately equipped with pre-approved products and welldeveloped services added with a recognizable brand name that will be a solid foundation to build your business on.
Here are some essential things that you need to take into consideration before deciding whom you choose to begin your franchise journey with. Industry growth potential: You need your franchise to be something scalable. The security industry is here to stay, and modern developments need to be implemented as the technology progresses. Rapid turnkey business: You want to minimize the time between paying your franchise fee and being able to get your first customer. Recurring revenue: Monitoring services and other security options that acquire a recurring fee from clients get you a steady income besides larger one-off projects. Top brands, systems, and training: You need to work with a company that offers the best products and ensures your sales team knows what they are offering.
If this sounds like the investment opportunity you are looking for, then contact Surveillance Secure today. To learn more, call 1.877.405.4997 today, or you can request franchise information through our online portal at: https://surveillancesecurefranchise.com

Girls on the Run helps third- through eighth-grade girls develop life skills through a comprehensive physical activity-based positive youth development program, with councils across the United States. Helping kids to thrive in the 21st century!
Sharon Duke Estroff, M.A.T. Chief Executive Officer, Is the Creator and founder of Challenge Island™ Franchise. It was in Duke’s second-grade classroom where Challenge Island’s STEAM program (science, technology, engineering, art and math) was born and created specifically for her students, and she realized it would benefit all children everywhere, so she turned it into a full-time profession. She began offering Challenge Island as an after-school enrichment class in nearby schools while tutoring on the side to make ends meet. Before long, she had created a profitable home-based business that she could run around her family’s busy schedule. With the popularity of STEM, STEAM, and 21st Century Skills in the educational marketplace, Estroff had a hunch that her business model would work for other moms and dads, too. That hunch was right, and today, Challenge Island is one of the fastestgrowing and revered educational franchises in the world. Ranked in Entrepreneur magazine’s 2018 and 2019 Franchise 500 List and tapped by Entrepreneur as one of the 100 Fastest-Growing Franchises in the world, Challenge Island now has 90 units across the United States and Internationally.
Today Estroff is a nationally recognized parenting and education expert and a freelance writer for numerous national publications including Scholastic Parent and Child, Parents, Woman’s Day and Good Housekeeping magazines. She is the author of the popular parenting book, Can I Have a Cell Phone for Hanukkah? (Random House). She is also co-author of the upcoming Challenge Island book series that turns the Challenge Island curriculum into an exciting and educational story. She is a sought-after
speaker who has presented to scores of communities nationwide about the trials and tribulations of raising kids in the digital age. The Challenge Island franchise is a perfect fit for moms or dads that want to invest in education and own their own home-based business because education is always going to grow and evolve. A Career That Clicks Kitchen Tune-Up’s female franchisees enjoy an edge
W
omen looking for a rewarding, interesting career are finding a justright fit with Kitchen Tune-Up®, says Heidi Morrissey, president of the South Dakota-based company.
Morrissey believes women want a trusted remodeler working on their homes. So her 31-year-old company’s solid reputation has a leg up on the competition from the get-go. But Morrissey says Kitchen Tune-Up’s female franchisees enjoy a further advantage because the company’s clients are predominantly women, so they feel comfortable working and communicating with other women. Some of Kitchen Tune-Up’s female franchisees are single and some others serve as the primary for a couple-owned business. In fact, it’s common for a spouse to join the franchise as business rapidly increases during the first year of operation through word-of-mouth referrals and marketing. Morrissey describes Kitchen Tune-Up as “the brand that hugs. We do kitchens so well that we get hugs all the time” because clients are

thrilled with the results. Sometimes the facelift for a kitchen (or bathroom) is as simple as reconditioning the cabinets’ wood, giving it a likenew appearance with the company’s proprietary process. Franchisees use the company’s well-honed system to help clients arrive at the best possible remodel for their budgets. “With options for every budget, we create customers for life,” Morrissey says. Potential franchisees sometimes have experience in the building trades, but they don’t have to. Kitchen Tune-Up offers online training and support for franchisees, including a six-week online program and eight hands-on days paired 1:1 with a mentor. – Deanna Pledge

Mom’s Best Friend? Many franchises cater to the needs of working mothers
For lots of career-driven women, the thought of going back to work after maternity leave can be exciting and overwhelming. They often find themselves at a crossroads with mounting pressure to be the best at home and at work. The start of the week hits and pressure grows as their duties at work resume and the responsibilities at home await. All of this happens while making sure the baby has enough milk on standby, which many moms must pump at the office. God forbid a new mom should yawn after a sleepless night, because that will automatically trigger talk of “she can’t handle it.” Sheesh, how exhausting that sounds! Why would any woman go back to work after having children? Luckily there are more franchises than ever before that cater to women with families. These franchises allow us career-driven moms to not only work, but work for ourselves and still be there for our children without feeling punished, judged or totally overwhelmed. There are mommy-and-me fitness classes whose entire community is made up of these women.
44 FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
There are remote franchises like FranServe, which allow you to work from home on your terms. There are child-centric brands that enrich and broaden children’s learning. The great thing about these mom-friendly options is the companies have developed systems and procedures that make owning a franchise a plugand-play model so motherhood and a successful career can happily co-exist. Those systems and procedures make it easy to track your team and sales remotely, a liberating situation for moms who must drive carpool or feed a baby. Franchising does not punish women for becoming mothers and raising families. It’s quite the contrary, with many companies’ models wooing moms as owners and strategically developing their systems – semi-absentee models, for example – to help them enjoy motherhood and a career. Take it from me: I am walking the walk with two incredible daughters ages 11 and 8, plus I have a thriving franchise consulting firm. Yes, you can break through glass ceilings and achieve your personal best at both.
A trainer and mentor for FranServe, Inc., the world’s largest franchise consulting firm, and the CEO of WestStar Franchise Group, Jessica Melendez coaches and educates prospective franchise owners and helps them find businesses that align with their personal and professional ambitions. Kidcreate Studios enhance children’s creativity and overall learning Lara Olson had enjoyed artistic pursuits as a child, and she wanted her son to be able to flex his creative muscles, too. “I was on a mission to find art classes for him,” Olson says, but art programs were being cut from schools and after-school programs in her area. So in 2008, she opened the first Kidcreate® Studio in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Her innovative business encourages children to express themselves through visual arts, drama and music. Olson points out that participation in the arts helps kids’ reading readiness, reading and verbal abilities; adds to their math, science, and history knowledge; improves problem-solving and social skills; builds confidence; and even leads to higher scores on college entrance exams. She started franchising Kidcreate Studio two years ago and already has 10 U.S. locations ranging from Colorado to North Carolina. The studios are tech-free zones where children experience the joy of creating. The company’s age-tailored curriculum is designed for children 18 months to 12 years old. One unique aspect of Kidcreate Studio is its two-in-one business model. Franchisees offer classes, camps and art-themed birthday parties in dedicated locations but
can deploy an “on-the-go studio” that takes the creative action to wherever the kids are, such as private schools, community centers and preschools. These out-in-the-community classes double as word-of-mouth advertising that broadens the client base. Embedding activities within existing community locations also enhances acceptance by parents while providing a comfortable, familiar environment for children. Olson says her franchisees hail from varied backgrounds. Some are husband-and-wife teams; others are women who have transitioned away from the military and corporate America. Kidcreate is all about family, and many franchisees bring their children in as well. With training, teens help teach some classes. Kidcreate Studios focus on children’s joy and pride as they discover hidden talents, so Olson says the most important qualification for franchisees is to love being around kids. Having business experience helps, of course, but individuals with a passion for kids and for their community fit Olson’s expectations to a T. Everybody WINS KIDS FIRST® Swim Schools helps franchisees achieve their dreams and saves children’s lives
Sandy MacIver, director of franchise development for KIDS FIRST Swim Schools, is on a mission to help people own a business that saves children’s lives. MacIver’s career path isn’t surprising when you look back at her childhood interests. Growing up in a small community, Middle River, just off the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, she had always dreamed of becoming an Olympic athlete. Participating in many sporting activities, she never turned down the opportunity to venture and try anything new. In her junior year of school, she was chosen as one of the state’s top athletes to represent Maryland in the filming of a children’s sports TV show. From there, her athletic talents led her to All-American status, and induction into both high school and college Sports Hall of Fame. Today, and after 30 years of a successful executive management career, she channels her energy and her competitive spirit into KIDS FIRST Swim Schools. “The KIDS FIRST Swim Schools brand is significant to me. If you believe in something, it isn’t hard to want everyone to know more about it,” MacIver says. “Helping franchisees make their dreams become a reality of business
ownership is extremely exciting. And rewarding them with a brand that I believe so strongly in, makes all the hard work worth it. Owner Gary Roth, who founded the company in 2001, had such a strong believe that “Every child should know how to swim,” and because of this passion, he opened up is first KIDS FIRST Swim School in Perry Hall, Maryland over 19 years ago. Applying her years of sales, and marketing, and operations experience to work, MacIver finds it very gratifying to be a part of the growth of KIDS FIRST Swim Schools franchise company. From start-up to a successful franchisor, she believes whether it’s slow or quick, you have to feel good about you have achieved. Although KIDS FIRST Swim Schools is still an emerging franchisor, and having only logged a few years in the franchising industry, MacIver truly loves what the industry offers. “This is entrepreneurship at its best, additionally, the franchise industry offers such wonderful people.” The relationships that I have built in such a short time, by virtue of hard work, have been very rewarding to me.” “Helping to save children’s lives, and helping to reward people with a franchise making their dreams become a reality, is a win-win situation”, MacIver says. – Rose Mango

Mother and Daughter find a Sweet Spot with Le Macaron French Pastries
50 FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
After moving from France to Florida in 2002, Rosalie Guillem missed her grown children and grandchildren who remained in Europe. But that’s not all she missed. “Here, I was unable to find one macaron,” she says, referring to the delicate French confection. Her quest for an authentic French macaron inspired her to start a business in the United States and gave the mother of four an opportunity to partner with her daughter, Audrey Guillem-Saba. “I offered to create a café patisserie with her,” Guillem says. The proposal lured her daughter to the States. They’ve built Le Macaron French Pastries into a sweet business empire with more than 50 locations across the country. They started with one site in Sarasota, Florida, that was such a hit it drew customers from more than two

hours away. “It was fantastic to see all these people come to our location,” says Guillem, CEO of Le Macaron. “They really love the product and they really love the ambience of the café.” The upscale cafés – which Guillem describes as “like having a little vacation in France” – use top-quality ingredients and offer various artisan coffees, eclairs, gelato and, of course, its signature French cookie. The sweets feature two delicate shells, often vibrantly colored, that are made of almond flour and meringue. In the middle is a decadent filling such as ganache, chocolate or jam. Le Macaron French Pastries offers 20 different macaron varieties and regularly introduces new offerings.
Le Macaron offers two business models, a café shop and a mobile kiosk. The café business model requires an investment starting at $130,000; the kiosk starts at $85,000. Guillem encourages women considering a franchise to trust themselves. “As a mother, sister or wife – as a woman – we can do a lot more than we think we can do.” In her experience, sometimes a woman doesn’t know she can’t do something, “so you do it.” That go-getter attitude led Guillem and her daughter to success. “It’s the American dream, but it’s not only our American dream. If women have dreams, they have to do everything to reach them.” For details, visit https://lemacaronfranchise.com or call 720-316-6626.
Franchisees aren’t doing the baking, though – all products are made off-site. “They don’t have to get up at 3 a.m.,” Guillem says. “We do all the baking.” Guillem clearly has hit on a recipe for franchise success, and she thinks that being a people pleaser is a key: “French pastries

A Woman Helping Women The founder of BeBalanced blends business acumen with her fitness and nutrition expertise Dawn Cutillo paired her educational background with her passions in establishing BeBalanced Hormone Weight Loss Centers. The company provides a “nonmedical, holistic approach to solving stubborn weight gain, premenstrual syndrome and menopause symptoms, and Cutillo says the process works for women of any age. She laid the foundation for BeBalanced by studying exercise physiology and nutrition while earning a Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Messiah College in Pennsylvania. And Cutillo minored in business, just in case she wanted to try her hand at entrepreneurship one day. Her career began in corporate wellness. Later Cutillo managed a weight-loss center in a large fitness facility, which was where she noticed that women were dieting and exercising in a healthy way but still not losing stubborn weight, especially after age 35. They also dealt with mood swings, insomnia, irritability and hot flashes.
54 FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
“I always had issues with my hormones,” Cutillo says, “but I never connected it to weight loss. As I got a little older, I found it hard to lose weight and felt bloated. I wanted to solve this issue… [so] I did more research.” She ultimately worked with a chemist to develop a process to ease the symptoms. It focuses on naturally balancing hormones, detoxifying the body and easing digestive disorders. After seeing great results with her program, Cutillo wanted to spread the word and wrote her book, The Hormone Shift. “I was offered a deal to do an infomercial and sell online,” she says. “This is when my brother David [Cutillo, who is now director of franchising for BeBalanced] and I talked about the best model being the ability to work with women in a more intimate setting, face-to-face. This lent itself to a brick-and-mortar facility with staff availability leading us to go in the direction of franchising,” which began in 2013. Cutilllo adds, “I’m very passionate about this topic because I suffered the same symptoms, so I want to bring women freedom from their excess weight and symptoms while also offering a way to find financial freedom by owning their own business via our BeBalanced franchise. It is so fulfilling to me on both levels.” To learn more about the business opportunity or to see if a hormone imbalance may be holding you back, visit www.bebalancedcenters.com

The good ol’ days are better than ever! The founders took their fondest memories of spending the day with their dad and getting a haircut into creating a business that mimics the 1970’s feel of a guys’ place. The Guys’ Place, A Hair Salon For Men is the quintessential barbershop experience with a 21st-century spin. Walking into The Guys’ Place envelops you, and you instantly feel like you did as a child getting your first haircut with dad.
of having been there before. Leather chairs, large big screen tv, blend with a color scheme that is reminiscent of old times are all specifically designed to bring you comfort. “I wanted to create a place that men could go and begin a new tradition for a generation that may have never been able to experience without stepping into our salon,” said Brian Bowe, Managing Member.
The environment is strategically built to surround men with that feeling
“The days-gone-by hold fond memories for us, and we wanted to bring this to the younger generation in this 21st century that would genuinely benefit from experiencing one’s first haircut in a very unique yet traditional way.” The salons have removed almost all haircut anxiety. “We think you’ll agree that sitting in our waiting room with a big high-definition TV, lots of great magazines or the local newspaper, while shucking salted peanuts, doesn’t make for too bad of an experience. And that’s just while you wait!” Bowe adds, “Your stylist will take you to your private barber chair and hand you the remote control for your flat-screen TV. Not only will your stylist

cut your hair, your stylist will give you a relaxing shampoo and cooling conditioner, a hot soothing towel, trim your eyebrows and mustache, and give you a shoulder rub with an old-fashioned Oster massager.” Speaking from a franchisor’s perspective, he adds that “Hair care is recession-proof, and our model is designed to be a standout franchise that’s unlike a typical men’s salon. The hair industry is a $65 billion-dollar industry. It pays to stand out.”
Bowe developed the franchise so it’s enjoyable for everyone involved: employees, customers and owners. The Guys’ Place cares for its employees first, Bowe says, and that philosophy helps attract and keep skilled employees who in turn serve customers well. “Since opening our first location in 2005, we have been committed to refining our business model and improving our
internal processes. We continue to open and operate corporate locations so that we can keep a focus on enhancing our model from all aspects of ownership. We are very active in our business and plan to keep it that way – not because we have to, but because we genuinely enjoy working with our employees, customers and franchise partners.
“Committing to any business is a big deal. We don’t take that lightly. You deserve our personal attention right from the start. So instead of filling out a form, why not give us a call or send us an email? We are growing and would love to talk with you about joining our team of franchises.” – Rose Mango For more information on our franchise opportunities visit: http://www.thebarbershops. com/franchise.

Two Truths and a Lie
A reality check for succeeding with your franchise My husband and I play the game Two Truths and a Lie with our kids. The game is an easy way to get teenagers to reply to “How was school today?” and “What did you do?” in more detail than their usual “great,” “OK” or “nothing much.” The object of the game is to figure out which of their answers are true, and which statement is false. As my kids have aged and no longer willingly play this game, I have realized that it applies to franchise ownership. For those who do not know franchising very well, you may know some facts but also have some misconceptions.

irst and foremost, the biggest truth about franchising is something you may have already heard: It really is an easier and faster way to get into a new business than going it alone. Solid franchise brands have systems in place and a path to get started, plus they get you going right away. Soon after signing the Franchise Agreement, the franchisor should provide you with comprehensive checklists and procedures that will help you to launch the business. You should be ready and willing to adapt the franchise practices into your everyday life as the business owner. Read your operations manual, ask questions, and be eager to learn. Accept that the franchisor knows the procedures that will lead to success. Follow the system, use the processes, and be a team player. After all, you trusted the franchisor enough to join the brand, and you should expect “great” results, but here’s the second truth: It takes time. Yes, franchising will typically reduce the time it takes to start up, but high-performing businesses aren’t born overnight. There are likely to be weeks and months of hard work – something you also may have heard, and you better believe it. Putting in the effort from the beginning is essential to developing a franchise-owned business to maturity.
A
big part of your effort will be to keep learning. Attend the ongoing training that’s offered. Franchise brands want their franchisees to continue to grow, and to that end, top franchises offer webinars, coaching calls and annual in-person conferences. Take advantage of these events because they connect you to the leadership team and to other franchise owners. Working together is essential to making the most of your investment. Without this effort, your business may be just “OK.”
P.S.
N
ow we get to the lie. Well, maybe it’s not so much a lie as a huge misconception. Many people hear the word “franchise” and think that the franchisor will do and has done everything to guarantee success. Not so. That is where you come in. You are a critical factor, and you have to do more than “nothing much.” No one can start a business, ignore it and achieve success. The same holds true for investing in a franchise. If you want to reach your investment goals and accomplish all of your entrepreneurial dreams, then you have to be all in. Use every opportunity you’re offered by the brand and turn it into your version of success. The best part of this is that you have help. Many others are all in with you.
If you still have younger children at the dinner table, you now have a new game for starting meaningful conversations. And one day those kids might be the second-generation owners of your franchised business. October 2019 63
FIRST THINGS FIRST 19 years in the property-restoration industry started PuroClean’s CEO on his path to franchising success
“
efore I even thought about getting into franchising, I had spent my career in property restoration – starting in 1996,” says Mark Davis, CEO and Chairman of PuroClean. “I was 27 when I, along with a partner, bought my first restoration company from a husband-and-wife team. They financed the purchase price for us, which is how we were able to buy it at such a young age.” He states that from that day on, they never looked back. “That little company, Rocky Mountain Catastrophe, was doing $3 million in revenue in just

three years,” he says, cleaning buildings damaged by fire, smoke, mold, floods, and criminal activity. Davis and his partner sold the business at that point. “I stayed on as CEO with the new company known as Belfor USA Group Inc. In only eight years, Belfor was bringing $400 million in revenue, which was when we sold it. Today, Belfor is one of the largest restoration companies in the world.” Davis steered clear of the industry for the period required by his noncompete agreements, but “wanted to get back in. So I bought a company called Signal Restoration Services with Frank Torre in 2012, who now
also serves as Vice Chairman for PuroClean. I had Any PuroClean franchise that may be presented great success with it and began to look into franchising a job in their market that may seem bigger than it. Keep that Day Job Semi-absentee franchise ownership is a hybrid model with income security
Semi-absentee franchise ownership has become a popular and often preferred ownership option. Its advantages include providing diversification and stability for franchise owners who have steady and often high-paying day jobs. Semi-absentee franchise owners oversee the overall operations with limited yet strategic involvement while trusting their managers to run day-to-day operations.
68 FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
Semi-absentee franchise ownership blends aspects of the other two primary franchise ownership models: owner/operator and executive/absentee. Owner/operator is preferred if you are looking for an immediate career change. Under this model, you are responsible for the day-to-day operations, and it’s a good choice if you want to maintain total control over your investment and become immersed in the business.
Executive/absentee suits people looking solely for an investment opportunity. The time commitment is minimal because you hire out all functions to operate the unit, and you have little to no involvement in the day-to-day operation.
Semi-absentee ownership is ideal if you want an additional income stream to diversify your current income. The time commitment is typically low, requiring approximately 10 to 15 hours per week, so it’s relatively easy to keep the security of steady income from your day job.
Managers will take care of business functions on a daily basis while you will focus on leading the business strategy and directing the managers. As you start to explore franchises that can be managed on a semi-absentee basis, you will find a variety of alternatives from very different industries. Some key examples are frozen yogurt and ice cream shops, hair salons and other beauty-service businesses, tanning salons, vending machines, car washes, laundromats, fitness concepts, and cleaning services. As diverse as these businesses are, they do have common operating characteristics, with the primary ones being: • Managers run the operation day-to-day. • Semi-absentee ownership franchises are typically retail or service-based. • They’re usually set up to become multi-location operations over time. • Owners don’t need prior industry experience for success. When deciding whether semi-absentee franchise ownership is the right investment for you, examine your needs and goals as well as think about what you expect of your investment. Do you want to
become a franchise empire builder? Do you want to build multiple concepts? How much capital do you have to invest? Semi-absentee franchise ownership and its benefits often represent the sweet spot of owning a franchise for investors who are interested in maintaining their current jobs and income while adding another income stream. One of the most important aspects of any franchise system is the training program. When I talk to business owners about franchising their enterprises, I ask them very early to see their documentation on how to operate various aspects of their businesses. By going through these materials, I develop a sense of what the training program needs to look like, and these documents often can be repurposed and used in training franchisees and their employees. (Of course, if there are no documented processes, that translates into a whole different issue when it comes to creating a training program for the new franchise offering.) For most franchise businesses, training programs consist of prelaunch, launch and continuing education components. Let’s explore all three.

This should cover the period from when the franchise agreement is signed until the formal launch training that typically takes place right before the grand opening. There should be a business launch project plan in the operations manual that covers basic start-up tasks. It should present these tasks in chronological order and give the new franchisee a week-by-week program to follow. The activities that would happen during this phase are creating the business entity, setting up bank accounts, searching for locations, learning industry terminology, ordering assets such as vehicles and signage, ordering inventory, and hiring employees. The steps for completing the prelaunch training need to be well-documented.
2
The interaction with the franchisor will typically be done via phone or webinar, with no classroom-style training done during prelaunch training.
L AU N C H TR AI N I N G This is usually carried out in a classroom setting and/or in a franchisor-owned business location. On-the-job training also may occur. Launch training should consist of learning how to use software systems, how to execute sales and marketing programs, how to handle customer service, and how to do specific work associated with the business. For many businesses, the owner has different work responsibilities from the staff members, so there may be separate training tracks depending on the responsibilities of the different staff positions within the business.
3
CONTIN U ING EDUCATION It’s important for the franchisor to have plans in place for continuing or refresher training. Franchisees will need new training as additional service offerings are made available by the franchise business. Training also should be in place to cover changes in technology as they become available.
It’s smart to have refresher training every year or so. This will help make sure that franchisors don’t start to drift away from the best practices of the franchise system by developing potentially bad habits over time.

Never take no for an answer Even in male-dominated fields, women like Barbara Moran live their leadership dreams Barbara Moran – daughter of Dennis Moran, founder of Moran Industries – was immersed in the family business as she grew up. Moran even dreamed of becoming president of her father’s company, which includes franchises that offer automotive repairs and aftermarket vehicle parts and services: Mr. Transmission, Multistate Transmissions, Dr. Nick’s Transmissions, Milex (tune-up, brakes, air conditioning) and Alta Mere (window tinting and auto alarms). She was told that role was unattainable, that customers and franchisees wouldn’t be comfortable with a woman leading a company in a maledominated industry. Disappointed yet not completely giving up, she moved on to other things, including a stint as a legislative aide to an Illinois congresswoman. Years later, Moran returned to the fold as an owner of 76 FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com

And by the late 1990s, she held several positions within the company. “I was operating in a dual role as a franchisee and also as an employee of the franchisor, as personnel director and corporate secretary,” Moran says. She also advised her father, who was ill, about the company’s direction. Moran refused to be swayed by others’ opinions about women in leadership roles. “When I was told no, I decided to disregard that no, and I was going to learn as much as I could in as many areas as I could and move on with a career in the legal field, the political field or the franchise field. I was going to utilize my employment as a way to educate myself further in business.” Perhaps surprisingly, when Moran served as an aide to Rep. ACHIEVING
BALANCE
ew franchisees must often work long hours, which can be a deal-breaker for a businesswoman juggling her career with family needs. Amy Torres found the vital work-life balance she required by investing in Naturals2Go, a vending company with locations nationwide. “I’m a working mom, and this business is very flexible,” says Torres, who lives in New Albany, Indiana. She chose the company so she could set her own hours and do a significant part of the job remotely. She became an operator in July 2018, with 10 machines to oversee in her southern Indiana area, and she’s already expanding to 12 machines. Torres has set her sights on 20 machines to tap the potential market in the area, which has a population of 100,000.
80 FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
She easily balances her role as mom to a 16-year-old with her entrepreneurial ambitions because of the structure of the business. Torres typically restocks the machines on Mondays and Tuesdays, which leaves the middle of the week open. She orders her snacks and beverages from the wholesalers of her choice. Toward the end of the week, they deliver to Torres’ home or she picks up the merchandise. Before taking a vacation, she fills all the machines before leaving town. Torres says she is often asked whether franchisees need a truck or van to carry snacks on restocking days, and the answer is no. “I drive a sedan and I can fit everything I need,” she says. Her home is her headquarters. Torres has created what she calls a mini-warehouse there for storing the goods. The proprietary system
“I’m a working mom, and this business is very flexible.” NAYAX, which is built into the Naturals2Go vending machines, allows her to remotely monitor inventory levels in real time. So if a machine is running lower than expected and needs an early refill, Torres can find out about it from home or almost anywhere. “I can then go in the evening if I want to refill a machine.” She can also troubleshoot her machines remotely via the internet if a problem arises. Another high-tech plus for Naturals2Go vending machines: customers can pay by debit or credit cards, cash, or Apple Pay or Google Wallet. This means Torres doesn’t lose sales because potential customers don’t have the right amount of cash in their purses or pockets.
She isn’t the only working mom with a Naturals2Go business. It’s about a 50-50 man-woman split among franchisees, says Makayla Seger, the company’s senior vice president of sales and strategy for Naturals2Go. Seger adds that many husband-and-wife teams partner in Naturals2Go franchises. Take advantage of the growing trend to eat healthier. Launch your own Healthy Vending Machine Business. A TYPICAL WEEK IN THE LIFE
of a HERO INSPECTIONS
franchisee T
he HERO Inspections concept came about in 2015 while taking a beautiful mountain bike ride in the front range under the Flatirons in Colorado. Curt, HERO Inspections co-founder, had sold his inspection and environmental business in Orlando, Florida, and moved to Colorado. Co-Founder Greg had previously lived in Orlando as well before moving to Boulder, Colorado. The two had become buddies while they both lived in Florida and attended a meeting at a weekly cycling group. Curt and Greg were spending time with friends at a restaurant after riding some local bike trails. While chatting, Curt started talking about his inspection business in Florida and how he had some great ideas in mind for a new company. The idea was headed in a bit of a different direction, and it was a good one. With Greg now living in Colorado, the idea for HERO Home Inspections and Environmental was born. As the plan was hatched, a million questions started flying over the table. Who will they be as a 86 FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
company? What’s their message? How will they be different? They wanted to do everything differently – and more importantly, do it better. Their goal was to improve the inspection process, protect the client, protect the Realtor, and ultimately create an opportunity for other entrepreneurs to start a HERO Inspection franchise and expand. All their hard work and persistence was rewarded as HERO Inspections came to fruition and has become an exceptional opportunity for those wanting to start their own inspection service franchise. With the benefits of franchising, the accessibility to their services across the U.S. is unlimited. Start your HERO story and join the HERO family. Build an inspection and environmental business in the real-estate industry based on a proven model of success and backed up by an extensive infrastructure. Learn more here: https://heroinspect.com/learnabout-franchise-opportunities/ – Rose Mango
MONDAY TUESDAY
On Tuesday Greg takes his daughter to school and then attends a 10 a.m. coffee meeting with a realtor. After coffee, he shoots over to a sales meeting that HERO Inspection sponsors for approximately 50 Realtors®. He shares his message to them in less than 10 minutes. It’s fun to meet the Realtors® who have been referring business to HERO Inspection. They have become friends of the HERO family.
WEDNESDAY
Wednesday involves a direct call to Greg, asking him to perform an inspection at a cabin up in the mountains. He knows it’s going to be a beautiful drive, and happily accepts. As the day progresses, more calls from Realtors®, followed by meeting with a Realtor® to share advice that helps clarify an inspection objection. Finally, it’s off to run the payroll and get the team paid.
THURSDAY
Thursday starts with replying to some automated marketing emails and scheduling a couple of coffee meetings and happy hours with Realtors® for the following week. Greg then has a meeting with a newer inspector to review her report. He swings by a house they’ve previously inspected to do an EPA asbestos building inspection, before they start renovations Lastly, he stops by a nearby inspection to check in with the inspector, and to see how the client is doing. Friday is a fun day. After making a stop to do a mold and asbestos test, Greg is able to play in a real estate golf charity event. The crowd is full of realtor reps, mortgage reps, and title reps. It’s a great day to not only give back, but a valuable day of networking as well. He has probably made at least ten new connections in the real estate world. To top the day off, he heads home to make dinner for his family.
SATURDAY/ SUNDAY
Greg wakes up to see 10 inspections set up for the week, which is about $5k in revenue already on the books. At the office, he checks in with team members, who are already busy scheduling additional inspections. The afternoon calendar includes a sizable commercial inspection. “What’s fun is knowing that all the emails, payments, and inspector notifications are going out automatically, with some extra services offered,” said Greg. It’s always a plus when the email comes back asking for additional services.
FRIDAY
DAY-BY-DAY FOR GREG FOWLER, CO-FOUNDER OF HERO INSPECTIONS
The weekend has arrived and Saturday brings plans for a family mountain bike ride. They head out, ready for a day of fresh air and beautiful Colorado sights. Greg takes a quick client call who is asking to schedule an inspection for the following week. Boom – all set up for next week. Now to get back to enjoying his free time.
In a given week, the team probably do 30-50 inspections, with Greg participating in a few of the inspections himself. HERO Inspections are always looking for ways to make sure the team is fully trained to take special care of clients and Realtors®. October 2019 87

What does Starbucks do when an electrical outlet isn’t working? How about if Olive Garden needs to have broken bathroom tile repaired? They call in a handyman… or a handywoman like Katrina Farrell. Because even big businesses have small jobs. Six months ago, Farrell became the owner of a commercial repair service franchise covering the entire Seattle area. Her company, Just Let Me Do It Commercial Services, has found a niche in its detail-oriented repairs at retail, restaurant and office locations for some of America’s most recognizable brands. Just Let Me Do It takes on bigger renovation projects, too, of course, but just the small jobs can keep Farrell and her staff very busy.

“We’ll hit one place and change a bunch of ballasts and light bulbs,” Farrell says. “Then the next place, we need to fix a cabinet door. It’s the nitpicky things that are important.” As Farrell talks, she gives the impression that she always knew how to swing a hammer. That’s not the case. “I wasn’t handy,” she says. In fact, her previous career experience consisted of working in nonprofit organizations. But at age 53, she aspired to own a business. “I was at a point in my life where I wanted to do something different.” And that’s what she’s got: being a handywoman for large and small businesses in a territory that includes 41 cities across four counties. Knowing she could draw on her business background, Farrell made a logical foray into franchising. The company’s female founder,

FAN meets in Washington, D.C., to continue its support and protection for franchise models FranServe CEO Alesia Visconti traveled to Washington, D.C., last month to participate in the annual Franchise Action Network (FAN) meeting hosted by the International Franchise Association (IFA). FranServe joined in on the yearly event in which IFA members discussed government policy and economic, health care and social issues impacting the franchise business model and the franchise community. This gathering was well attended by franchise representatives from across the country who
Left to right: Tom Baber, Alesia Visconti, Tim Katsch, Anne Huntington, and Sam Caucci
met with members of Congress, senators and their staffs on Capitol Hill. During the annual review of legislation, everyone participated in conversations to protect the current and future state of business for the franchise industry and small business owners. FranServe is an active, committed supporter of the IFA and FAN. Visconti was both proud and honored, yet again, to join the nearly 400 attendees to support and empower the franchise community and bring meaningful change to their business. “Franchise brands create over
7.6 million jobs and produce nearly $675 billion in economic output,” Visconti said. “During FAN, the franchise community truly comes together to support and protect the franchise model. FAN is one of the most effective tools that the IFA and the franchise community has to positively influence policy. Support is always needed to keep our business model intact.” To be a part of FAN, simply text FAN to 52886 or contact IFA’s Erica Farage at efarage@franchise.org for more information.

2 Gaining insights from a successful franchise owner
Ron Katz of Florida
shares insights about the path to becoming a successful multiunit
Midas franchise owner and the rewards of taking the plunge What is your background?
What has been the best part of being a Midas franchisee?
“I’ve done many things in my 30-year career, including working in the oil industry. My auto-related jobs began with selling cars, and then I moved on to general manager and up through operations manager in several car dealerships. Five years ago, my franchise partner, Jerry Kaye, and I teamed up with Midas. We have expanded to four locations in that short period of time.”
“I have worked at a lot of franchises, and this is the best experience of all of them. It is not only the best fit for me, but the company has the best reputation, too, at national and local levels. Jerry and I have gotten great support, especially the easy-to-use Midas website that sends us customers. And the company’s reputation alone brings people into our shops. I haven’t had to spend hours of my time – and lots of money – on advertising and marketing because the Midas brand is so strong. Jerry and I really love the brand! Its strength means that Jerry and I can focus our efforts on exceptional service and community support at all times.”
96 FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
You considered other franchises, but what made you choose to invest in a Midas franchise?
“Well, as I said before, the support is excellent. And I knew I wanted to be involved in a business that suited my previous work experiences and that would set high standards for customer service, because that’s what keeps people coming back. I also like that Midas encourages individual franchises to give back – we’ve done that by sending supplies to Puerto Rico for Hurricane Maria victims and more recently we’ve rounded up food and supplies to help in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian. Before I invested in Midas, I looked at many different franchise brands. I’m really pleased with the way this has turned out.”
What has been your biggest challenge?
“I always focus on the positive, and that applies to my view on challenges as well. Opening and growing the franchise has been just like any other business start-up in terms of challenges and expenses. Midas has helped smooth out problems along the way. They helped us build a good support staff and helped us grow the business – Jerry and I opened two new stores in the past six months.”
What else would you like to share about your entrepreneurial journey that might benefit other prospective franchisees?
“Jerry and I keep striving to do more. How we handle the customer is how we distinguish ourselves from the competition. The customer pays our paycheck. We train our staff to remember that and to always take care of customers, to keep their cars running and safe, sometimes even when they can’t pay. I believe my previous work experience in the auto and franchise industries have been key assets. I also think it was very important to research franchises very carefully before making a decision on where to invest.” – Deanna Pledge For more information on franchise opportunities, please visit: www.MidasFranchise.com October 2019 97

Handyman Pro
MAKING NUM CALLS
Don’t look it up because we made it up. A NUM call means No Ulterior Motive. It’s a phone call, an email, a handwritten note with NO motive, simply a nice thing to do to for anyone – customer, prospective customers, past customers, family, friends. No limit.
Handyman Pro, one of the country’s fastestgrowing home repair and remodeling franchises, has built a tradition of excellence in residential and commercial handyman services. By bridging the gap between the small-time solo handyman and large remodeling contractors or companies, you’ll provide your clients with far-ranging services such as carpentry, electrical, gutters, siding, windows, doors, masonry, plumbing, HOA maintenance, landscaping, construction cleanup, furniture assembly, and more. For more information, visit https:// www.premiumservicebrands. com/handyman-pro/ Franchise Fee: $60,000 Royalties: 6% Total Investment: $75,000-$80,000
Hearing from someone out of the blue with no reason is one way to have customers remember you. It’s special and often well rewarded. When was the last time YOU heard from a salesperson just to say hello? Or an old friend, or anyone? Right. See what I mean? And one word of caution. Don’t say “just” a call; or “just” a note or I “just” wanted to say hello. “Just” degrades the point and lessens the importance of the gesture. See how STRONG the sentence becomes when you don’t say “Just” a note to say hello or on a phone call or in an email. “JUST” is a weak wimpy word and other than “I was just going to call you,” is pretty useless. It’s difficult in business today to make yourself STAND OUT in the crowd. A NUM call is one way to do it.
