franchise jargon What exactly is
Franchising? A method of business expansion. It takes a single, proven business model that replicates the original model, by applying it in various locations around a defined geographical area. The original owners of the business sell the rights to operate under the company name and image to multiple individuals, who then run and manage that business as if it were their own.

We have all seen commercials for lottery tickets with the question posed: “If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would do?” Often the response is, “I’d fire my boss!” What if there was another way to fire your boss? One that produces more winners than lottery tickets? In this month’s issue, we start a new column titled “Fire Your Boss!” It highlights individuals who have left Corporate America to pursue their dreams of business ownership through franchising. Each month we’ll outline the path they were on, the change they made, and the path they’re on now. You’ll see how you, too, can follow in those footsteps, become a business owner, and fire your boss! As you browse through the pages and learn about various brands, I encourage you to think about what your life would look like if you fired your boss and became your own boss. The entrepreneur’s life looks good, doesn’t it? Lastly, I want to send out a big thank you to our readers! Many of you complimented us on the improved look and tone of our magazine. We truly appreciate your feedback and support as we continue to take Franchise Dictionary Magazine to the next level!

franchise jargon What is the difference between
Franchisor and Franchisee? These are two different terms, but they’re included together because you can’t have one without the other. The franchisor is the individual or organization that allows other people to start a business using its name, identity, branding, trademarks, products, and processes, in return for a fee or a percentage of profits. The franchisee is the individual or organization that purchases the rights to open and operate a business under the franchisor’s name and brand identity. The franchisor/ franchisee relationship is one of the most critical parts of the franchising model. 12

The environment instantly takes a senior back to their younger days. It’s a comfort that is familiar to them. Town Square is built to enrich the lives of seniors daily at a very affordable cost to them. Read about Senior Helpers Town Square’s franchise opportunities in this issue and see what a fantastic, groundbreaking opportunity this is for potential franchise investors. EXPERIENCE proves invaluable “ You can’t teach somebody how to swim unless you know how to swim yourself. And we’ve been swimming for 36 years,” explains Phil Dushey, founder and president of Global Financial, a company that assists small businesses in obtaining loans. Based on this philosophy, Dushey created a training program to expand his network of finance brokers rather than launching a traditional franchise.
“ It just didn’t make sense if you were in Omaha and you’re getting deals from all over the country that you can fund. It just didn’t make sense as a franchise.” Approximately 700 brokers have completed the Global Financial Training Program in New York City since its inception 16 years ago, giving each the tools to market lending services to a nationwide customer base rather than just a limited territory.
“ If you got in your car and you drove for an hour, how many banks would you pass? Tons! They’re everywhere,” Dushey explained, citing that though banks are numerous
they have strict criteria for lending money to small businesses – and many simply don’t qualify.
“ They are turning down 80 to 90% of applications from small businesses.” Dushey’s business matches small businesses who have been turned down for bank loans with alternate lenders. This network of lenders has been cultivated by Dushey over several decades. The intensive four-day training program includes instruction on all aspects of marketing one’s business, including web marketing, indirect marketing and direct marketing. The program costs $19,950 with marketing expenses averaging about $700 a month. More importantly, Dushey points out, it gives students the opportunity to network with Dushey’s lenders. “Most lenders want brokers to be in business for at least three or four years, and guarantee a certain volume of business, which new brokers can’t do,” said Dushey.
“ Not only do we teach the business but we’re in the business as well – and have been for 36 years.” – Rochelle Miller

etired NFL linebacker Gary Brackett knows what it means to be part of a winning team. As a member of the Indianapolis Colts, he earned his Superbowl ring in 2007 after his team prevailed over the Chicago Bears. As the CEO of his own restaurant empire, the Stacked Pickle, Brackett is leading a winning team by building a strong sense of community with the franchise team and customers. “It’s their local sports bar,” Brackett explains. Though every location is sports-themed, each site takes on its own character based on that particular area’s local sports teams. This includes professional to collegiate sports and even high school and middle school teams. Proving his commitment to the community, Brackett started giveback programs for education in which 15-20% of dining proceeds are donated to area schools. “We expect our franchisees and also our general managers to be the ’mayor’ of the community,” he said. Brackett is there to support community outreach efforts, often making personal appearances in the Stacked Pickle’s 10 locations. He is aiming to expand the brand to 50 stores in the next five years with a focus on the Midwest and South. He has also been building his brand in the community by making himself visible through media interviews, book signings, podcasts, and television appearances.
“When you say that our CEO is a former Super Bowl champion, they take those phone calls, so it’s a lot easier,” he said. Franchisees will have the benefit of his fame to promote their own business, setting this opportunity apart from other potential restaurant opportunities, he explained. But what keeps customers coming back is excellent service and great food, mainly its stacked-high sandwiches and amazing fried pickles for which the restaurant is named. “There’s a fine balance using my name for notoriety to get the attention, but then it’s up to the store to drive people in and keep people coming back,” said Brackett. – Rochelle Miller For more information about franchising opportunities, visit https://buildthepickle.com or call 317-849-1648.

the buzz Lice Awareness Month One thing most people don’t associate with “back-to-school” is lice awareness, but that is about all that is on the minds of Lice Lifters franchisees this time of year. Lice Lifters provides a fantastic public service in their awareness campaigns as kids, parents, and teachers return to school. Michele Barrack, the franchise founder, makes public education a major part of her franchise’s focus as children return to school. She points out that 50% of people with head lice aren’t even aware of an infestation because they are not itching from bug bites. The classic assumption of incessant scratching is more of a myth than a reality. That is part of the reason Lice Lifter’s educational campaign is so important. When kids return from summer camps and are in close contact with classmates, the spread of lice is almost always a given, especially when you consider the asymptomatic nature of lice! September is Lice Awareness Month, scheduled to coincide with children’s return to school all across the nation. In addition to the public health contribution that Lice Lifters provides, it is also their busiest time of the year. Head-to-head contact, a simple hug, or even a selfie are common interactions between students that spread lice in a matter of seconds. Most families will look first to over-the-counter solutions when they become aware of lice, but Barrack notes the challenge is that lice have become immune to over-the-counter products. What’s even more frustrating for parents is that they may believe after all the clothing, hats, sheets, and pillowcases have been washed is that their sense of relief is probably not even real. Even after using over-the-counter treatments, most lice remain and can still spread among friends and family. Even homeopathic or essential oil treatments may fall short of ridding youngsters of the pests. Peppermint spray is the only effective treatment, according to Barrack, and that is exactly what Barrack’s franchisees use in their product. In addition, the spray serves as a detangler. But Barrack wants to educate the public about tea tree oil and lavender, which simply aren’t effective. Education and value and peace of mind, are touted as the main benefits by clients of Lice Lifters. Reducing stress is another mainstay for busy parents questioning how this happened and how to get rid of the lice, completing the process through a onetime treatment. Lice Lifters provides a tremendous public service and a way for franchisees to make an essential contribution to their communities. School visits and community education programs about self-checks are just part of the outreach activities highlighted this month by franchisees. And Barrack points out how easy it is to set up your own franchise, with one of the lowest cost entries. With the ease of getting started and the value you can provide, Lice Lifters may raise your awareness about more than just its services and products during Lice Awareness Month. You may have also found the perfect franchise opportunity. – Deanna Pleadge Follow this link to learn more about the Lice Lifters franchise: www.licelifters.com/franchise-opportunities September 2019 25
Franchising Allows You to
Live Your Life with Passion! W
e know you’ve been thinking about opening a business for a long time, right? Whether it has been your lifelong dream, or you’ve recently decided to start your own business, a franchise is a very viable option for an aspiring entrepreneur. The choice of franchise categories is vast. You can indeed find one that suits you, your passions, and your experience. If your present career is not satisfying, it may be time to branch out – time to get serious and fully embrace owning your own business and fulfill your dreams. Leaning on a franchisor and their team for support is one of the best ways to start up a small business. No matter what your goals are, how big you would like to grow or how much revenue you would like to drive through your business on an annual basis.
Franchising is a wide-open field where you can find many brands in the industries you are considering – having someone who has been there before, who has proven out the dayto-day operations is important. Someone determined. Someone who knows what works best in marketing and customer-centric programs is a benefit to you as you start your new business. All of this is what franchising does best.
My recommendation for choosing a brand is to start with an industry that stirs your passion. Whether it is senior care (like this issue is all about), foodcentric, retail, child-care or service-based. Do you want to work from your home office and go to clients, acting more as a solo-preneur? Maybe you don’t know how to market your experience, let alone create a website?
26 FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
A franchise brand, in this case, is a definite win for you! Right out of the gate, you can launch with a reliable brand, have access to the materials you need and an online presence that could take years to establish on your own. Maybe you want to open your own shop, hang a shingle in your home town, and be able to serve your local community with amazing products. A franchise brand will not only be able to help do that, it will also help you design and fit-out the entire store from soup to nuts (so to speak). They will also allow you to leverage their buying power, and open quickly, which will more than off-set the ongoing royalties you pay. They will have already chosen the right POS system, help you review the right reports, and set goals to pay back your loan or recoup your investment. They do this in addition to guiding you on the products that sell and providing the advertising materials to make it happen.
Joining a franchise brand lets you stand on the shoulders of someone who has already navigated the path you set your feet on. They also give you a mentor to turn to when you need advice from someone who is actively invested in your business growth. Here’s my advice on the first step to franchising. Look for a franchise founder who thinks like you, while sharing your vision, professional and personal values. Research their website, talk to them,
and make sure that it sounds like a match for you. Then, be sure to review the FDD in detail and learn as much as you can.
Visit them and get to know the franchisor and their team. Feel if it’s a good fit. This is a long-term
commitment, but one that can really pay off in the end when you are part of a much bigger brand than you could create on your own.
I wish you the best in your research and the ultimate decision. I’ve done it, and I am happy about having owned a franchise in the past. Now, I spend time helping franchisors create opportunities for people ready to start while looking for training, ongoing support, guidance, and a proven brand. – Dawn Abbamondi

Senior Helpers, a wellknown franchisor, has opened a reminiscence therapy adult day care center built to look and feel like the 1950s. The new franchising model – Senior Helpers Town Square Franchising – is officially an affiliate of Senior Helpers, the Baltimore-based home care company. The Chula Vista, California-based George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Center, which created the original Town Square prototype, will share operational expertise, along with other resources. “Town Square franchises will help provide muchneeded reminiscence therapy and adult day enrichment services to the millions of Americans who have Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. I love the concept,” said Senior Helpers CEO Peter Ross. Founded in 2001, Senior Helpers provides personal and companion care services to families in their homes. They pride themselves in offering specialized

care for individuals with dementia as well as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other diseases. Senior Helpers started franchising in 2005 and currently has more than 300 locations in its network. Each Town Square location is comprised of an indoor, simulated urban environment with more than a dozen distinct 1950’s type vignettes. That includes a 50’s diner, movie theater and additional storefronts. It is designed to be an immersive, interactive environment, helping to preserve cognitive function and is carefully crafted to transport seniors to the past. What is exciting is the cost for seniors to spend the day in Town Square. It is a very affordable $95 a day, an expense that includes specialized care from Senior Helpers staff, who are contracted to serve as program aides. Senior Helpers Town Square Franchising may be an attractive investment opportunity for entrepreneurs looking to enter the booming senior care industry – but it’s one that comes with
at Town Square! a higher price tag. The investment to start a Town Square location will likely be between $1.2 million and $1.7 million, depending on location, according to Ross. Investors interested in opening a Town Square can either do so through a hands-on ownership model or an absentee ownership model. Allowing for absentee ownership means casting a wider net for investors with the necessary financials in place. It’s a different type of investment model, and it is desirable for a different kind of investor. Senior Helpers Town Square Franchising will work with local real estate partners to identify Town Square sites. Investors will pick a final location, and then a preferred contractor will build it out. A local Senior Helpers home care franchisee comes along and staffs the entire franchise with care staff of 10 to 15 aides once opened. “The plans to expand are plentiful. We have already sold 11 franchises and have more than 200 investors that have already reached out,”
Ross said. The Senior Helpers affiliate franchisor is targeting 100 U.S. Town Square locations within the next three years.
“It’s a huge win for Senior Helpers,” Ross said. “You can imagine 100 Town Squares, or 100 staffing contracts with Senior Helpers franchisees around the country, so that’s significant revenue to Senior Helpers and a way to provide resources to franchisees of Town Square. We have many candidates ready to buy a franchise,” Ross said. Due to the nature of this being a terrific solution for all types of elder care that are not being served presently, Senior Helpers Town Square franchise is being positioned to provide Town Square care in nearly every state. “There is just nothing like it!” Ross said. – Rose Mango For more information on franchising opportunities visit https://shtownsquarefranchise.com/

Difficult to imagine It’s difficult to imagine needing so much assistance one day that you would be unable to live in your own home. That’s why quality home care is so vital, not only those who need it, but their loved ones as well. Finding providers that offer a full range of services to ensure a client can remain at home is a particular challenge.
companion services such as helping clients get to doctor appointments, or even personal services, providing help with daily grooming and getting around the house. But for those who require a more intense level of care from a skilled medical professional, it often means having to switch home care providers.
That’s why BrightStar Care was created. The company was founded by Shelly Sun, the company’s CEO, who had struggled to find quality care for a loved one.
“BrightStar Care sets itself apart from the home care competition by offering services in all three segments – personal, companion and skilled. When our competitors need to turn away clients needing skilled care, we’re able to keep our clients for a longer period of time,” First said. This provides an opportunity for franchisees to maximize revenue potential, he added.
“This is a very rewarding industry to be a part of, as we’re making a difference in people’s lives each and every day,” explained Pete First, the company’s Vice President of Franchise Development. Franchises are available in all 50 states, and BrightStar Care offers a unique advantage over its home care industry competitors. Many home care agencies provide
“We’re able to provide an additional level of care for our clients which helps us keep them in their home longer than other companies can,” says First. “Home is where our clients want to be.” – Rochelle Miller For more information about franchising opportunities, visit https://franchise. brightstarcare.com or call 877-689-6898.

Standing Out from the Competition W
e asked Talem Home Care what the best way was to differentiate between home care franchises for a potential franchisee. Jake Rankin, CEO, chimed in with some fascinating facts. Suffice it to say, as a leader in the home care industry, Talem Home Care knows their industry very well. Here’s what Rankin had to say: “In the world of senior care brands, there are many fish in the sea. We all provide caregivers that help with the activities of daily living (bathing and dressing assistance, house cleaning, meal prep, transportation, etc.) So the real question is, how does one brand stand out from the others?" Talem Home Care facts: Franchise fees:
$39,500
Territory size:
Territories start at 400,000 and goes as high as 625,000 for 1 single territory
Training programs:
A minimum of 6 weeks of training is provided. We will come to you as often as needed at no additional cost. Talem understands that a new business owner will need start up capital and it’s difficult to pay extra fees to the franchisor.
Talem has removed extra fees such as:
• Mandatory minimum royalty fees • Paid royalties for the first 3-6 months
• Additional training fees • Mandatory conference fees
The not-so-obvious factors to consider: Size of the franchise brand:
Smaller franchise systems have the ability to personalize. The training and support go above and beyond in ensuring the success of the franchisee. Not only do we have time to make sure you are well supported, it is very important to us. Your success is our success.
Payor sources:
Over 95% of facilities (the percentage is my opinion) only provide care to those who can afford it or who have longterm care insurance. Talem believes that everyone deserves care when they need it. We focus on helping those who have trouble financially. Other payor sources can include State Medicaid, Medicare (coming in 2020), and a unique VA program for low-income vets and their spouses.
Additional benefits:
Royalty reduction program rewarding successful franchisees for high revenues and growth, Revenue lines, knowledge of the CEO, training, support staff, and many more advantages.
With Talem Home Care, there are fewer fees, more support and exceptional territories. For more information, visit www.talemfranchising.com.

solution
He comes from a family of doctors and medical professionals, but even David Giacobbo watched his loved ones pay the ultimate price from a poor level of care. His grandfather tragically died in a nursing home while restrained in a wheelchair. “When he tried to get up, it flipped and he broke his neck,” David recounted. His grandmother broke her hip in her house even though there was a home care attendant there. She never recovered. “The care that happened to both of my grandparents eventually led to their death,” recounts David. These personal tragedies inspired him to establish One You Love Homecare, provider of in-home care services. “That’s why this is near and dear to my heart.” Combining his passion for quality home care services, with a background in business, led to the Philadelphia-based company's fiscal success. A success that generated $2.9 million in revenue his first year and $3.6 million in year two, and that's just the in home coverage area of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The company’s success can be attributed to David’s hands-on approach with his clients. “All of my clients have my personal cell. I’m accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” The business has entered its third year. Franchising made perfect sense to David, who has expanded into new territories. Each territory demands the same level of personalized attention his clients deserve. One You Love Homecare deals strictly with private payers, keeping the client in control. “I want to make sure the quality of care is there as opposed to the quantity.” The company is registered in 32 states and is poised for expansion into brand new territories, but David makes it clear that those simply seeking a passive income opportunity may not be a good fit. “I’m not looking for absentee owners,” he said. “They’re going to be the face of their business.” – Rochelle Miller For more information about franchising opportunities with One You Love Homecare, email franchise@oneyoulovehomecare.com or call 866-660-7136.

What Sets A Brand Apart?
yler and Shawna Field both grew up in service-oriented families with parents that chose careers as a high school teacher and coach, nurse, and minister. Tyler previously worked in the insurance industry, and Shawna had experience as a registered dietitian for long-term care facilities. In planning their careers, they were both seeking positions in which they could serve their community at a much deeper level. Assisting their communities was an important aspect of their childhood upbringing, and they wanted to raise their four children by instilling those same values. In most communities there are opportunities to care for patients and their families. The Fields felt they not only had the desire to provide for residents, but also wanted to help create jobs locally. It is the very thing that drove them to open their franchise – Assisting Hands Home Care. The Fields shared some valuable insites about their experience with Assisting Hands and the joys of owning their own franchise. – Rose Mango

We chose to franchise because we felt we needed the training, support, and reputation that the Assisting Hands franchise program offers. The company outshines their competition with their incredible support and thorough training of what you need to know before ever opening the doors. We also knew that franchise businesses have a higher rate of success over individually-owned businesses. That is exactly what helped us make our choice when becoming an Assisting Hands franchisee. Juggling our personal schedule with the never-ending needs of our clients and caregivers can be a bit of a challenge at times. It is due in part to the fact that providing healthcare is endless. People have valid, critical (and usually unexpected) needs at all hours of the day. Fortunately for us, we have found trustworthy and skilled internal employees that are willing and able to meet these requirements so that no needs ever fall to the wayside. We really enjoy employing people from our community. It is part of the reason we wanted to open our own business. One of the best parts of owning a franchise is the amazing people we have met – both clients and caregivers. Many of our caregivers feel their profession is a calling, a “responsibility” or “duty,” and they pour their hearts into their work. So often they put their personal needs aside and work tirelessly to meet the physical, emotional, and sometimes spiritual needs of their clients. Many of our clients have had amazing lives – serving in wartime, working in the early days of space exploration (we live in Brevard County, aka The Space Coast), traveling the world, caring for disabled children, running their own businesses, etc. Through the opportunity to meet and get to know these individuals, we feel we have learned and grown in so many ways. We strive to create a positive work environment in which all employees are valued and respected. We believe employees that are well cared for will in turn care well for their clients. Owning a franchise is so rewarding for all involved – more than you could ever imagine. Owning an Assisting Hands Home Care franchise empowers you to care for your community and to be well-equipped for success!

Franchisees can receive assistance from headquarters at every step, even long after opening day. “We have a weekly call once training ends, for the first 12 weeks,” Evankovich says. “After that, we have a weekly webinar for 16 weeks.” If a question arises, an operations representative typically returns the franchisee’s call within an hour. Oasis Senior Advisors also has an annual convention, holds monthly conference calls on a topic usually chosen by a franchisee, and hosts monthly marketing calls covering new tactics. Proprietary software handles front-office tasks like invoices,
accounting, a client database, and lead and document storage. When software is enhanced, online training is offered at multiple times for convenience. Franchisees hail from diverse backgrounds such as engineering, golf course management, and nursing. “The important thing is that they’re caring and compassionate and can build relationships with geriatric professionals who provide referrals – social workers, case managers, hospital discharge officials, attorneys,” Evankovich says. What a Franchisor should offer:
SUPPORT You’ve decided you want to get into business ownership and walk away from Corporate America, congratulations! You’ve taken the step of talking with a franchise consultant to start investigating which of the 3,000 plus franchises might be a good fit for your particular situation. You’ve found some options that fit your financial requirements, are available in your geography and check the boxes for several other key attributes, that’s a great start. As you go through your evaluation, make sure to get a solid understanding of the support programs the franchisor will provide. Branding, training, product offering, and day-to-day responsibilities are crucial, but when it comes to long term business success, none of them will be more important than the support you get once your business is up and running. Make sure there is documentation in place. The Operations Manual Table of Contents will be listed in the franchise disclosure document. Check with existing franchisees to see how helpful the Operations Manual is in helping them run their business. The Operations Manual needs to cover all aspects of running the business day-to-day from the time the franchisee opens for business in the morning until they shut down in the evening. Additional support materials should be posted somewhere, such as an internal intranet for easy access. What type of human resources are available when the franchisee has a question? Ask existing franchisees how quickly they get responses when they need help.
46 FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
Are there weekly or maybe bi-weekly calls organized between all franchisees and the franchisor? This can be a great way to share ideas between franchisees and develop best practices that the franchisor can then roll into their standard support procedures. An internal message board that all franchisees use to exchange ideas is also a great feature to ask about. The franchisor doesn’t have to have every single detail figured out, and that will most certainly be the case in a less mature franchise, but the franchisor does need to be ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work solving problems that the franchisee may encounter. I can remember a franchise I did some work with years ago that never made the transition from running their own business to becoming first and foremost a franchisor. On many occasions, I heard complaints from the franchisor that franchisees were such a pain because they always need help with running their business. As you can imagine, that business is no longer in the franchise world!

FI R E YOU R BOSS! “No regrets at all,”
says FASTSIGNS owner Sarosh Nayar, “not even one.” So began my interview with this highly successful franchise owner, who ten years ago left an outstanding career in Corporate America to pursue his desire for ’something more.’
Educated through two Ivy League schools, Sarosh landed a job with Philip Morris Inc. in NYC, and progressed his marketing career through American Express and PepsiCo. The position with PepsiCo brought him to Dallas, where he started to think beyond life in Corporate America. “I can’t say it was the best time to think about leaving Corporate America. It was 2009, and the economy was in a recession. My wife Karin and I were expecting our first child. However, I was tired of the politics, tired of the limitations, and tired of not being excited,” explained Sarosh. He had an opportunity to purchase an independent, non-franchise sign shop – that didn’t work out. Looking back, he is grateful it didn’t go through – and the statistics support it is a good thing it didn’t. Having a franchisor’s
support and proven business models at your fingertips does make it more likely for success. About.com says, “Studies show that franchises have a success rate of approximately 90% as compared to only about 15% for businesses that are started independently.” There is considerable support on the benefits of franchise ownership over independent ownership. Sarosh continued to explore sign businesses, and FASTSIGNS was the perfect opportunity for him. He followed their system while applying the skills he had acquired throughout his career – and it paid off well. Today his Dallas location is ranked in the top five of all FASTSIGNS in the world. I asked him what he liked most about his business, and his reply was filled with excitement and passion: “We value our employees, and they feel it. We create a culture of happiness in the workplace. We make a difference in people’s lives and our community. It feels more like a family than a staff, and yes, I admit, the financial rewards great as well. Probably far greater than I would have made in Corporate America.”
Sarosh Nayar, Karin Nayar and COO Joey Carrasco
The final question I asked Sarosh for our interview was this: What advice would you give someone who was thinking of firing their boss and becoming a franchise owner? Sarosh didn’t hesitate for a moment: “There is life outside of Corporate America. Sure, it’s not for everyone, so take a good, hard look at being a franchise owner, but be sure to take the blinkers off when you do. Be open to possibilities. I heard something years ago that has always stayed with me: ’Fortune favors the bold.’ I am proof of that. I never thought I’d be in the sign business, but leaving Corporate America and becoming a FASTSIGNS owner has given me a much, much better life and future!” To learn more about FASTSIGNS visit www.fastsigns.com. – Alesia Visconti
Note from our publisher, Alesia Visconti: Before delving into the franchise space, my background was in the careers industry. Certified as both a career transition coach, and as a life coach, I worked with many people who were miserable in Corporate America – they felt trapped, they felt unappreciated, and yearned for a change – but they also feared to break free and to leave. I launched this column to highlight fabulous people who moved forward despite their fear, fired their boss, and pursued their dreams of business ownership through franchising.

PASSION is
number one! “We’re looking for franchisee owners that exude passion. I can teach everything on how to run a restaurant, but I cannot teach passion,” said Doug Bostick, Fazoli’s Senior VP of Operations and Franchise Development. The Fazoli’s brand has been growing strong and has gone through some significant renovations in the last 12-16 months, from the menu revamps to remodels of the locations. They believe in staying current always in all ways. “The renovations line up with our growth plans,” Bostick explained. Fazoli’s is a brand with a rich history tracing back to 1988. Based in Lexington, Kentucky, Fazoli’s was created with the mission to serve premium quality Italian food, fast, fresh, and friendly. Fazoli’s continues to offer strong unit economics, innovative menu options, and personalized franchise support. Fazoli’s pioneered service-after-the-sale in the QSR industry before the actual establishment of the fast-casual segment. They believe in providing guests with an unparalleled experience – real plate ware and silverware and table-side grated parmesan – differentiating Fazoli’s from the competition in the QSR space. In 2018, Fazoli’s showed no signs of slowing down. The brand set records with its number of openings, signed three new franchise agreements, ramped up plans to remodel and introduced Snacks & Shareables as part of a menu refresh

resulting in one of the most successful product launches in the brand’s history. To maintain their competitive edge, Fazoli’s continues to invest in new technologies to elevate the guest experience and support their franchisees; hence the remodels. They offer full IT support, including point-of-sale and back of the house systems. In this technology-driven, on-demand marketplace, they have embraced technology. In addition to app/rewards and mobile ordering, they are also integrating third party delivery. “At Fazoli’s, we look for franchisees with food industry experience. update IFG PROVIDES A
VALUABLE SERVICE It’s easy to envision yourself serving up good food in a restaurant business or selling products from a brick-and-mortar store. That’s why David Banfield calls his invoice discounting business an “intangible” franchise. “If we talk about a muffler shop or a design studio these are things that immediately conjure up an image and make the opportunity ‘real’,” explains Banfield, president of The Interface Financial Group (IFG). For more than 20 years, IFG has been providing a valuable service to businesses that need to keep a healthy cash flow. For example, for a company that manufactures a product that manages to get placement in a big-box retailer, it may seem like a dream has come true. “They give that company an invoice expecting to be paid in 60 to 90 days,” Banfield explains. “If they don’t get paid for 90 days, it can ruin their business.” That’s where an invoice discounting service like IFG comes in, providing upfront payment on the invoice minus a fee, restoring that company’s bank account balance in the short term. IFG, which operates in eight countries, already has a network of 47 franchisees and continues to grow. Its expansion is attributed to a winning formula that only requires franchisees to contribute no more than 16% of the invoice while earning 50% of the total once it is paid. – Rochelle Miller For more information about franchising opportunities with The Interface Financial Group, visit www.interfacefinancial.com/franchise/ or call 800-387-0860.
“The key is we don’t actually take the risk,” Banfield adds, explaining that should the invoice not be paid as promised, the client is ultimately responsible. “We have a buy-back guarantee on every transaction.”

Will Biggerman VP/COO OF SURVEILLANCE SECURE
Q A
What was your inspiration to start a security franchise?
Q A
Early in my career I briefly joined a company that had a very successful franchise model, I believe that’s where the franchise bug was planted. Twenty-three years ago, I entered into the security industry and loved it. I saw a tremendous need that wasn’t being satisfied by the traditional types of security services. I wanted to branch out and help fill the void, I just couldn’t shake the desire to franchise the business.
How did you prepare to franchise Surveillance Secure?
Q A
I knew I couldn’t do it alone. I had a strong working partnership with Kim Hartman our President and CEO, and Rob Gazzola, Director of Marketing and Franchise Development. Together, we combined our ideas of franchising and began forming a plan to take the right steps to branch out.
What inspires the choice of services that you offer through Surveillance Secure? We saw a need for both service responsiveness and customer care. These were two significant categories that were lacking in this field. We can provide customizations and more boutique solutions that many of the more prominent companies simply cannot.

discusses franchising
Q A Q A
What is the opportunity for potential franchisees interested in security? As the world of business grows, so does the need for tighter security. This is an industry that will never be stagnant. As technology evolves, so do the needs for security. The categories of business are extensive, and it just continues to grow as society changes. The territories are vast and ready to be filled. The time is now.
What is your perfect franchise partner? The folks that we are targeting are professionals. People that may have worked in a construction firm as a project manager, or a government contractor, where maybe they were a program manager. Just ordinary people that are used to managing finances, employees, materials, ordering products, etc. They do not need security or even a technical background. We know without a doubt that we can take a professional business person and train them until they’re well prepared and on their way to running their own franchise. We provide comprehensive training that is thorough and ongoing. We are always upgrading our training and redeveloping it as technology continues to advance and change. This industry is not going away, and if anything, it will grow and continue to expand well into the future. We are looking for candidates that want to own their own business and evolve into the future with us. THE PROS + CONS OF AN EMERGING BRAND n my business, WestStar Franchise Group, time and time again I have heard, “Not that brand because it’s too new, I want a more seasoned brand with tenure.” Yes, it may be new, but will it be more successful than a tenured brand? That’s the million-dollar question. There are pros and cons to every emerging brand. The pros and cons can also be perceptually based on the unique investor. Let’s take a close look as I break down the differences of a new brand vs. a tenured brand.
Territories: The Franchisors are more willing to offer larger territories to their first few franchisees as an incentive. Prime territory is available for the picking. Negotiations: Franchisors are more likely to negotiate small terms like territory size, first right of refusals, future development plans, sliding scale royalties, and creative funding options. Access to the Founder: When brands are new, the founder is heavily involved so more times than not, candidates will have their calls and training with the founder. Huge value-added as they will go the extra mile not to have their first franchisees fail. Growth with the Brand: Due to the intimacy of being part of the brand early on, candidates can grow and be a part of the development of the brand itself, as well as participating in more corporate positions. Masters/Area Developer: Room for expansion as an AD or Master is wide open, and it allows you to obtain these developments programs with ease of availability. These situations are ideal for investors who want to be pioneers and seize the opportunity while it is hot.

PROS
A trainer and mentor for FranServe, Inc., the world’s largest franchise consulting firm, and the CEO of WestStar Franchise Group, Jessica Melendez coaches and educates prospective franchise owners and helps them find businesses that align with their personal and professional ambitions. As a past franchise owner herself, Melendez has first-hand experience in all aspects of franchising, which makes her an excellent resource for prospective franchisees. Contact Melendez at 915-202-8272 or Jessica@weststarfranchisegroup.com or visit www.weststarfranchisegroup.com.
any emerging franchises have great potential and as a candidate you either see an opportunity to build an empire or you don’t. Researching a new brand will take careful analysis of their operations, marketing, support, development, growth, and execution.
Executive Staff: In the beginning, an executive staff is practically nonexistent. It’s usually just the founder and maybe one other. Support may be a little sketchy because of limited resources.
CONS
Guinea Pigs: Because of the brand’s newness, a lot of the trial and error will be tested on those initial franchisees (such as processes, strategies, marketing, software, etc.) The franchisee will have to be patient during these growing pains. No History: There is little historical data or other franchisees the candidate can speak to. The new franchisee is really taking a leap of faith on potential. It’s a huge gamble. They will have no one to validate or see any sort of record on how well they can perform. They are testing the waters and will set the example for others. If they fail or succeed, they are setting the benchmark. Brand Recognition: Branding will be a challenge as it is barely coming to market. It will take some time before the brand has established national or regional recognition.

has proven to be a great success! Since launching their first retail store in their hometown of Louisville, Kentucky in April 2016, Sean and Amy Davis have expanded to operating four locations in less than three years. The key to this remarkable success is not only the wide selection of quality products but information to assist customers in making selections tailored to their individual needs. “Everyday people – lifestyle customers – are looking for answers, and they are not getting them from social media or the internet,” according to Sean Davis. “They want to be able to come into a store, talk with people who can give honest, sincere information and recommendations that are specific to the customer.” As a new offering, new franchisees will have the benefit of having Sean and Amy personally show them the ropes in their retail stores. They develop partnerships with leading national and worldwide manufacturers that offer the best in class, innovative brands and products. Sports Nutrition Authority takes it a step further and works within the community and with local gyms and events to grow the exposure of brand and products. Seeking to expand their brand across the United States, the Davises are launching Sports Nutrition Authority as a franchise offering. “Our brand has now reached outside of our footprint, and we decided that it would be best to offer our model to others who want to own their own business,” co-founder Davis said. Davis explained that in addition to access to their manufacturers, another attractive aspect for prospective

We are looking for pioneers with a passion for health and fitness. We are looking for a healthy lifestyle advocate, an individual owner, or a multi-unit investor. If you’re striving to be different, to stand out, to be unique, then I suggest you re-record your message that callers will hear. Here’s a frequently used phrase that frustrates your callers - and a few suggested fixes:
“I’ll call you back as soon as possible.”
THE FIX: “Please leave your name, number, and message, and I will return your call.” What’s also very helpful is to let the caller know other ways to reach you; i.e., email, home, office, cell, etc. Finally: there is no need to give a time limit on when you’ll call back. Why set yourself up for failure? Don’t promise a day and time. You can say – and I will return your call. That’s a fact. Then do it. – Nancy Friedman
