1. A welcome note from our publisher 2. Alesia Visconti on franchising While some people find growth stressful, I thrive on it—but not for the reasons you might think. It’s not simply doing “more”; that is appealing, but rather what growth brings: new adventures, new challenges, and (at least for me) great excitement. At a recent board meeting for the International Franchise Association, we visited the Utah Olympic Park. It was an epic perspective on being committed to excellence and pushing the limits, both important contributors to growth. At 104 pages, this issue is the largest to date. Franchise Dictionary Magazine continues to grow and expand in innovative ways. We absolutely love bringing you a plethora of options for business ownership, and this issue is chock-full of fascinating and affordable franchises. I hope you are inspired to take action and contact both the brands and industry experts on these pages. There’s no better time than now for you to start on your own epic path of growth and adventure!

1. A welcome note from our editor 2. Does size matter?
Bigger isn't always better. Just ask Renew Crew franchisee Phillip Howe. He paid just a modest fee for a booming business with high margins and didn't have to continually scale to be profitable. Not wanting the headaches that come with huge staffs, he found a sweet spot with eight to 10 employees. He learned that he can be more profitable and provide better service by not getting too big. Now he's enjoying a perfect work-life balance and has declared that he'll never work for anyone ever again. See his story on page 58.

Less can indeed be more. Folks often have the misconception that they need to invest millions to own a franchise. That is simply not true. There are many lucrative, in-demand brands out there. A lot of them can be run from home and have very low overhead. In this issue, we look at several innovative lowcost franchises starting on page 57. If you thought franchise ownership was out of your league, it's time to take another look. You might be surprised at what's out there. And after reading this issue, instead of asking yourself, “How can I afford it?” you'll wonder, “How can I choose?” All the best,

A Win-Win Vending offers big business with a flexible lifestyle Torn between the steady paycheck of a 9-to-5 job and business ownership? Perhaps you can have the best of both worlds with a vending machine business. According to healthy vending company www.Naturals2Go.com, U.S. vending industry sales topped $52 billion in 2018. For investors, this can be a great way to earn extra income without making a full-time commitment. “You don’t have to deal with accounts receivable,” says Eric Copeland, a Naturals2Go owner/operator based in the Atlanta area. “If someone doesn’t have the money, they don’t get the product. That makes the business easier to manage.” The technology incorporated into today’s vending machines makes inventory
manageable from anywhere. The machines transmit real-time information wirelessly, telling owners exactly what food and beverage items to restock. This saves owners time by preventing unnecessary trips to check if machines are stocked. Payment options are also a breeze because the machines accept credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay as well as cash. Copeland’s business has grown to more than 15 machines, making vending his fulltime focus. But for those who want a flexible, part-time business, vending is a perfect option. “You can start slow and add on. It’s a great lifestyle business,” Copeland says. buzz•word STAY PRODUCTIVE WITH YOUR HOME-BASED BUSINESS
Home Work Buying a home-based franchise? Prepare for the challenges. Here are a few tips to stay productive and avoid feeling stuck in the house. > Have a separate office space for work. This will help you focus on work and avoid distractions, like that dishwasher that no one has bothered to empty, or the laundry that’s piling up. > Set a work schedule. Having a set routine will help you keep your work life separate from your home life. Build in some leeway for unexpected meetings and appointments. > Invest in local marketing. Your home is not storefront, so you’ll need to advertise to get the word out about your business. —Jill Abrahamsen
When you work from home, these tips will help you handle phone calls efficiently and professionally. Full disclosure. Say you work from home in Colorado and your company’s headquarters are based in Florida, share that information with clients. Why? For one thing, it can build rapport through a mention of your location. Also, the time zone difference might be noteworthy. Dogs. Give fair warning that you’ve got a barker who could punctuate the conversation. Every time my Skippy heard a bird fly by, he’d bark. So at the top of the call I’d say, “We have a four-legged guest with us, and occasionally, he’ll need to say a few words.” That usually yields an understanding response. And again, it’s a way to build rapport—especially if the other party has a dog. Talk about immediate bonding! (If you have a
super-active yapper, you might move to an area where the barking can’t be heard.) Kids. If you’re the caregiver and might need to tend to a young child, give the other party a heads-up that there might be an interruption or two. Manage your time to minimize your parental responsibilities during calls, though. While we find our own kids cute and entertaining, they don’t hold the same attraction for the person on the other end of the line. Lunch. Meeting someone at a restaurant for lunch is a good idea. Eating while talking on the phone is a bad idea. I won’t dignify this further except to say that mouth noises on the phone are disgusting. Roll with the Punches A desire for a better work-life balance led this former police sergeant to a new career Jennifer August enjoyed her career in law enforcement but wanted a change for the sake of her family. “I needed a more flexible schedule,” says the former police sergeant. “Family-friendly hours just aren’t realistic for cops.” August always wanted to run her own business, and she knew that being part of a franchise system would give her a greater chance for success. During her search, Jabz Boxing Fitness for Women stood out for many reasons. “There is nothing like it out there,” she says about the 45-minute circuit workout program. August recognized a need in her area for a women’s-only gym. “Women of all fitness levels can participate in this high-energy program. The demand is real and I wanted in,” she says.

After monitoring the success of Jabz for a while, August took a leap of faith and resigned from the police force in November 2018. She opened her Jabz Studio in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, in April 2019. With an initial investment of approximately $130,000, August enjoyed more than $20,000 in revenue from her first month in business. August is thrilled with her decision and is getting much more out of her business than simply a flexible schedule. “We are helping people change their lives with this program. Clients are always thanking me for the newfound happiness and empowerment they have gained through Jabz. It doesn't get much better than that,” she says. Signing On A career in corporate America prepared FASTSIGNS® franchisee, Steve Hill, for business ownership Steve Hill always wanted to build his own business, but nobody accuses him of rushing it. Before buying his St. Louis FASTSIGNS® franchise in 2017, he served in the Air Force, earned a master’s degree in business, and worked in sales for Microsoft. During his research, Hill considered burger, sandwich, pastry, and shipping franchises. “What really attracted me to FASTSIGNS is that it’s business-to-business, and that’s my wheelhouse. Brand strength also enticed. “All of my customers have heard of FASTSIGNS. It’s a business card that always gets you in the door.” Flexibility is another perk; he can set prices and develop partnerships as desired. Hill concedes there’s stress—“speed is part of our name.” But he says the 20-plus “pressure-packed years at Microsoft” prepared him for it. “Customers have two expectations, speed and professionalism,” and FASTSIGNS

corporate is ready to assist with both. “I would be hard-pressed to find an organization that supports its owners any better,” says Hill. The schedule is sweet, too. Although Hill admits to being two stories up in a bucket truck for a recent Saturday installation, store hours are 8 to 5 weekdays. After closing, he rides his bicycle 20 to 30 miles and still has more family time than corporate America allowed. He trims his hours by delegating to his team of 3.5 employees: graphic designer, inside salesperson, summer intern, and parttime installer. Hill is ecstatic about his choice. “I love delivering for our clients. It’s great when they say, ‘I didn’t think you could do it.’ There’s a high level of satisfaction”… so much that he’s thinking about a second location. Franchisors and franchisees are perfectly positioned to make a mark on the environment Franchisors make a difference everyday by creating opportunities for aspiring business owners and job seekers. But many brands take it a step further and create change by embracing a service-based culture within their system. They raise money for charities, donate services, and sponsor events for important causes. Now franchisors are making an impact on the environment, too. “The beautiful part of being in a franchise system is having a voice and being able to make largescale impact,” says Tom Szaky, CEO of TerraCycle®, a Trenton, New Jersey-based company that has a mission to eliminate waste. The company partners with individual collectors as well as major consumer product companies, retailers, manufacturers, municipalities, and small businesses across 20 different countries. “It doesn’t always have to start from the top,” Szaky says. He urges franchisees to speak up to corporate offices and make 32
FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
suggestions. “Most often, franchisors will be receptive to implementing programs that have a positive impact.” Szaky is a perfect example of someone who knows how to make change. As a college sophomore at Princeton University, he grew frustrated with what was being taught in his business classes. “It was all about the bottom line. I wanted to leave my mark on the world, so I left school and did just that.” Szaky launched TerraCycle in 2001. Initially, the company just focused on making products out of waste, but has grown into a global leader in collecting and repurposing hard-to-recycle waste. They counsel businesses on preventing waste. TerraCycle has won more than 200 awards for social entrepreneurship and sustainability. “Everything in the world becomes garbage,” Szaky says. “It’s our job to change that.” Learn more at www.terracycle.com. —Jill Abrahamsen

Entrepreneurs Andy Thompson (above left), and Fred Morache are enthusiastic about their two-brands-in-one franchise opportunity, Postal Connections and iSOLD It.
Thinking Outside the Box New services create multiple revenue streams, expanded trade territories, and loyal customers If you think business services are not the most exciting area in franchising, you might reconsider after talking to entrepreneur Fred Morache. With great enthusiasm for his two-brands-in-one franchise opportunity, Morache explains with vigor the merits of Postal Connections® and iSOLD It®. “The best part for investors is we serve a growing need among consumers and small business owners who want customized service as ecommerce grows,” Morache says. “We’re kind of a one-stop retail center for convenience, hard-to-find services, and everything business.” Postal Connections offers more than 20 services, including shipping, mailbox services, copying, and printing. Franchisees have a new revenue stream with iSOLD It on eBay service, that is included in the Postal Connections franchise package. iSOLD It@ Home™ (home based) can be purchased separately. People with items to sell come to iSOLD It locations (usually in Postal Connections 34
FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
stores) for an easy way to sell on eBay. “We teach franchisees how to in-take items, research value, list accurately, work with buyers, sell rapidly, and use our proprietary sales system,” Morache says. “Our franchisees become experts on the value of items including works of art, antiques, home electronics, you name it. It’s a really fun business that frequently sparks lively conversations.” Drawing from their experience as executives with Mail Boxes, Etc. (which eventually became the UPS Store), Morache and his partner, Andy Thompson, wanted to create something similar, but with unique and amazing services. “We are the antidote to a common phenomenon in today’s ecommerce world: shrinking and often nonexistent personalized, problem-solving customer service. Our stores are the back office for small businesses and an invaluable time-saver for households on the go,” Morache says. We’re dedicated to delivering the complete package—inside and out—to everyone who walks through our doors.” The refresh has been undergoing refinements dating back more than three years. During this process, the Fazoli’s team has studied every aspect of the remodel, making changes as needed to bring costs down. Fazoli’s began with a redesign of the three restaurants in its home city of Lexington, Kentucky. To date, 19 locations have completed

their refresh and experienced 11% average sales growth. The brand refresh has been part of a formula that has ramped up success for both franchise and corporate locations. Last month, Fazoli’s experienced unprecedented growth in sales and traffic. To maintain its competitive edge, Fazoli’s continues to invest in new technologies to elevate the guest experience. The company recently launched a new loyalty program and third-party delivery. “We’re so confident in our growth strategy that we’re offering one of the best incentive programs in the industry,” Howard says. “A guaranteed savings of at least $125,000 for franchisees developing at least three locations. Franchisees developing more than five locations will save more than $200,000.” With a new look, new menu items, technology upgrades, and top-performing franchisees, Fazoli’s executives are confident that the company is well positioned as a leader in the restaurant industry. Now Hear This! Want to be heard at the highest levels of the federal government? The International Franchise Association’s Franchise Action Network, or FAN, has blazed two direct paths for you. (In case you’re not familiar with FAN, its 65,000 members advocate on behalf of U.S. franchise businesses with local, state, and national lawmakers and officials.) First, FAN offers a 24/7 online shortcut to help you send your message. Here’s how this shortcut works: Go to franchiseactionnetwork.com/take-action. You’re presented with several hot-button issues related to franchising as well as a generic option connecting you to social media handles for key politicians so you can sound off on anything you wish. Click on the “Take Action” bar of your choice. If you select a bar linked to a specific issue, you land on a webpage that has a form requesting information such as your business address and ZIP Code. Complete the form and click the red “Submit”

bar, and your support for the issue goes to your U.S. senators. (Recent topics on the Take-Action webpage included tax reform/ business reinvestment, joint-employer legislation, trademark licensing protection, and support for military veterans.) The second path is available September 9-11, when FAN members and franchisees can meet face to face with members of Congress in Washington. The International Franchise Association, a 59-year-old nonprofit trade organization made up of franchisees, franchisors, and suppliers, has set up meetings between lawmakers, FAN members, and franchisees. Franchisees can attend free of charge, and the IFA will brief them before meetings. To check out agendas, register, and reserve a hotel room, visit www.franchise.org/events/fan. s a child, Toni Wren didn’t know what she wanted to do when she grew up. “I never had a real passion for anything. I just wasn’t one of those kids,” she says. She stumbled onto her first career, in finance, by accident and later discovered her ultimate passion, working with children. Wren chose political science as a college major even though she wasn’t sure where it might lead. But her side job as a bank teller was what shaped her path. “By the time I graduated, I was a branch manager,” she says. This experience eventually led to a lucrative career in finance at top corporations, including a project manager role at Goldman Sachs. The recession of 2008 came at a great time for Wren. Her company downsized 44

and offered severance packages, and she jumped at one. “It was a no-brainer. Commuting every day was taking a toll. I needed a more flexible schedule to raise my family,” she says. KID STUFF After looking at different kinds of businesses, Wren decided that she wanted to work with children. “At one of my son’s baseball games, a parent asked me if I was available to run her kid’s party. It seemed like an odd request at first, but then she explained. She always saw me playing with kids at events. I was good at it. That’s when I realized my passion,” she says. Raising her children on Long Island, New York, Wren knew that any type of

kids-based business would do well in her area. “The parents here like to keep their children engaged in enriching activities.” LOOK NO FURTHER Wren investigated many children’s franchise brands, but when she came across Challenge Island®, she knew it was the right fit. “It was exactly what I wanted to do. I could own and grow a business, be hands-on, creative, and make a difference.” Wren was attracted to the flexible, home-based model and the fact that she could put her personal touch on the business. “You don’t get that with most franchises,” she says. After her initial call with founder Sharon Estroff, Wren didn’t look further. “I could hear the passion in Estroff's voice. She had me at hello,” Wren jokes. She opened for business in 2017. The after-school enrichment program,
which teaches science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM), is designed to help kids develop skills such as collaboration, compromise, resilience, and critical thinking. The hundreds of themed lessons target specific age groups. “Kids have so much fun with us, they don't even realize they are learning,” Wren says. Wren has customized the business to suit her lifestyle. “At first, I wanted to do everything myself: teach the classes, shop for supplies, and so on. But as we grew, I added staff.” She also added offerings for more revenue streams including camps, field trips, and adult classes. Because of the low overhead, it’s easy for Wren to use the business to raise money for charities. “The possibilities are endless with Challenge Island. I can make a living, do what I love, and make a difference, all on my own terms.” For more information, visit www.challenge-island.com.

Follow this checklist for due diligence
ou probably research cars before buying one and read a restaurant’s reviews before making a reservation. So it makes sense to do the same research—your due diligence—before investing in a franchise. The process should include a study of the local market that exists for the franchise’s products and services, conversations with other franchisees, a review of the Franchise Agreement by a lawyer, and participation in the franchisor’s Discovery Day. Follow this checklist to ensure you’re thorough with your due diligence.
2. TALK TO OTHER FRANCHISEES. Just as you read reviews for a vehicle or look at the menu of a new restaurant, you should learn from those who came before you. When you speak with current franchisees and those who were recently terminated, ask them: Are you profitable? Does the franchisor help with your problems and questions? How do you deal with competitors? If you could go back, would you buy this franchise again? By asking these questions early in the process, you avoid the potential for catastrophe.
1. RESEARCH YOUR MARKET. Does your market need the product or service? Have you called your future competitors to learn about their prices and customer service? Have you tested their products? These actions are crucial. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of stories about a franchisee introducing a product or service that was rejected by people in the territory and the cost to educate them about it was prohibitive.
3. HAVE AN ATTORNEY REVIEW THE FRANCHISE AGREEMENT. Having an attorney who is well-versed in franchise law is a must. But you also have to read the Franchise Disclosure Document, Franchise Agreement, and all exhibits, too. If you do not read the documents and then prepare a list of related questions and concerns for the attorney, he or she can’t fully help you understand your rights, roles, and obligations.
FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
“Having an attorney
who is well-versed in franchise law is a must.”
4. ATTEND DISCOVERY DAY. Discovery Day, or “Meet the Team Day” as some franchisors call it, is when a franchisor invites franchisees who are close to signing to visit a corporate location and learn more about the franchise and typical day-to-day operations. This is one of the greatest opportunities to obtain an indepth understanding of the business and in many cases it is one of the last opportunities to ask the franchisor questions before signing the Franchise Agreement. At Discovery Day, ask questions such as: What is the franchisor’s growth plan for the next one, three, five, and 10 years? What is the franchisor’s marketing strategy for helping franchisees? How are the
company’s franchisees performing, especially those in your general area? Each prospective franchisee’s due diligence checklist will differ slightly, but if you follow the four steps above, you’ll be well on your way to having all the information you need to make an educated decision. G
by Rochelle Miller rueling. That’s how Tim Smeltz characterizes the 29 years he
spent trekking into Manhattan from his New Jersey home to work as a chef. “The restaurant business is really tough. You have many bosses, markup is small, and the failure rate is extraordinarily high,” he says. Smeltz escaped the pressures of the food industry and his killer commute by creating a successful business from the comforts of his suburban house—his driveway, to be exact. RECOGNIZING A NEED As a homeowner, Smeltz noticed that his driveway lacked curb appeal because the dark asphalt was cracking and faded, even turning white in spots. He wanted to fix it but was surprised to learn that only one business in his area offered seal-coating, a relatively inexpensive solution that prevents water from seeping through the asphalt. “They didn’t even return my calls,” he says. That’s when he began researching how to do the job himself. Smeltz established NextGen Great Sealcoating in 2005 and has been growing the business ever since. Five years after launching, he partnered to develop an environmentally-friendly formula that contains no cancer-causing ingredients, an advantage his product has over most on the market. In 2018, NextGen Great Sealcoating began franchising across five states spanning the Mid-Atlantic region. Recurring revenue is a huge attraction for investors. “We 50
FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
recommend having [sealcoating] done every two to four years,” Smeltz says. “And we continue to expand our customer base through referrals,” he adds. Other advantages for franchisees include a central call center that routes customers to the franchisee in their area by ZIP Code and gives price quotes. “We offer huge territories compared to most franchises. We start at two counties and go from there,” Smeltz says. FINDING SOLUTIONS As an outdoor business, winter months could mean downtime for NextGen franchisees. But Smeltz has found an innovative solution: He offers his own customers a seasonal service to design and install Christmas decorations to keep revenue flowing, and franchisees can do something on the side if they wish. “In owning my own business, I have the freedom to make all of the decisions, knowing that I really only have one boss— my customer. For the right people, it’s the best way, which is why we’re looking for like-minded individuals to join us in our franchise.” For more information, call NextGen Great Sealcoating at 888-201-6109, or visit the company website at www.greatsealcoating.com.
“We offer huge territories compared to most franchises.
Entrepreneur Tim Smeltz was inspired to launch NextGen Great Sealcoating after a bad experience trying to get his own driveway serviced. This newlyfranchised brand offers huge territories and a low-cost, home-based business model. Franchisees feel good about using the company's proprietary, environmentally-friendly products.

Screen Saver Hitting the road to help homeowners with an all-too common problem The dreaded ripped window screen is an all-too common and frequent problem for homeowners. And while fixing standard screens is relatively easy in the scope of home repairs, sometimes the size of the window makes the repair a more involved task than a simple trip to the hardware store. Screenmobile® solves that problem. They come to a customer’s house and fix the screen right on the spot. “We make it easy for homeowners. They just have to pick up the phone. For potential franchisees, it’s a very simple model and a business that’s in demand,” says Scott Walker, president and CEO of Screenmobile®. Walker launched the brand in 1980 using a tent trailer and started fixing screens right on the spot. “It’s a truly mobile business, and the best part is that our vehicles are constantly getting us jobs. I can’t tell you how many leads we get simply by doing work outside a customer’s home,” he adds. Offering franchise opportunities since 1984, the company now has 121 locations in 28 states. Walker attributes the company’s long-term success to a simple formula: convenience and professional service for customers and low overhead and high-margins for franchisees. “We offer tremendous support and education for our franchisees. It’s an investment in long-term success for all,” says Walker. For more information, visit www.screenmobile.com —Jill Abrahamsen 62

Cash Flow is King IFG franchisees erase lag time in payments to business owners Small businesses can’t survive without consistent, dependable cash flow, something that’s often a challenge. Some folks think that once a business is up and running for a few years, the structure in place will carry it through. But unforeseen obstacles can crop up at any time, even with a well-established enterprise—an economic downturn, hefty price increases for materials or other overhead, a natural disaster, just to name a few. That’s where The Interface Financial Group (IFG) can help. This company assures vital cash flow by buying a business’s accounts receivable. The owner no longer has to wait for cash to trickle in on his customers’ timetable. IFG franchisees enjoy donning superhero capes to help small businesses thrive. Business owners are grateful, and franchisees feel good about their contribution. Some other benefits they appreciate: IFG franchisees have low overhead because they can operate out of their homes. They set their own hours and control how much or how little they work when cultivating and maintaining their clientele. And here’s the bottom line: Interface Financial Group franchisees are instrumental in building their own success as well as their clients’. The business is quick to start, too, requiring as little as three months from when the franchise is awarded to starting the initial jobs—with training in between, of course. “Our franchise partners have jobs waiting for them from day one,” says Colleen Pyle, co-founder of the thriving 22-year-old niche brand that began franchising last year. “Through established relationships, we have a preferred-vendor status that generates jobs without advertising.” These clients include major retailers, big-box chains, restaurants, and convenience stores. REWARD Three tempting categories to consider in home-based franchises
A
bout 52% of small businesses are home-based, with some 38 million in the United States. These businesses are managed over the phone or online, can be full- or part-time, and require little or no traveling or client interactions. Depending on the business, the owner might never need to leave the house or may work on job sites as well as from home. Home-based franchises typically cost less than traditional ones because of lower fees and minimal overhead— there’s no storefront to lease or buy, heat and cool, or pay taxes on. And with a franchise, as opposed to launching a from-scratch company, the business already enjoys widespread brand-name recognition with proven procedures and processes in place.

Home-based business opportunities are diverse. Popular and successful industries include education and tutoring, senior home care, cleaning and janitorial, management/ business services and financial consulting, marketing services, and home improvement/maintenance services. Home-based businesses have a lot going for them, but here’s one caveat: You need strict discipline for separating your home life from your professional commitment. If you can stay focused, ignore distractions, and keep to a schedule, it could be the right option for you. Does running a home-based franchise sound good to you? Here are three in-demand, high-growth categories to consider.
» Commercial Cleaning Services
For the security of repeat business and recession-resistance, commercial cleaning franchises make an attractive investment. These franchises are simple to run and quick to start up. One respected brand is Office Pride® Commercial Cleaning Services. With more than 25 years of experience in full-service commercial cleaning and janitorial services, the company is an industry leader with exceptional customer retention. Franchisees work according to the company’s core values every day, believing that how they do business is just as important as excellent customer service.
» Senior Care
With people 60 and older comprising a large segment of the U.S. population, the need for senior care is here to stay. Depending on the franchise, services can include medical care such as dispensing prescriptions and giving injections and/or non-medical care like personal hygiene and companionship. Perhaps surprisingly, experience in the health-care field is rarely required, although managerial skills are crucial.

Magic Moment What happens when the right person pairs with the right franchise by Jessica Melendez Certified Franchise Consultant

The Inside Coup franchisee Jesse Adams, right, is finding great success with his business.
s a Certified Franchise Consultant, I often work with amazing people. When those people flourish as franchisees, it’s one of the greatest satisfactions in doing my job. Less than a year ago I had the privilege of working with Jesse Adams. I made a match between him and one of my favorite brands, The Inside Coup®, a direct-mail magazine. Adams’ background as a sales manager for a local luxury magazine in the Florida area made him a perfect match for The Inside Coup. He wanted to start something of his own, and he had local connections and a strong desire to succeed. Between his experience, tenacity, and drive, a rock-star rookie was born. In six months, here’s how Adams developed a big name for himself at corporate headquarters and in his local market. • He has maintained the No. 1 position in the company for the highest page counts in his first zones.
• He is consistently one of the top new business writers each month. • His design is always top-notch, and his client retention is the best in the country. • He has just hit his Phase 1 of hiring and is expanding in the Bonita/Naples/Fort Myers territory over the next three years. This will bring circulation to 600,000, a plum for advertisers. • His networking and business-building events have been a steady assist to his growth month after month. • In the words of Teri Sullivan, vice president of franchise development for The Inside Coup: “He is basically the bestest EVER!!!” Seeing and being a part of Adams’ success has been extremely rewarding. This is what I am here to do: place the right candidates with the right brand and watch them succeed.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
1
franchisee of a Big O Tires
by Mary Vinnedge
Bill Walker plays a behind-the-scenes role as part owner of two Big O Tires® dealerships in Indiana. “I don’t meet with customers anymore. I take care of the back-office stuff so the store managers, my son, Tom, and his half-brother, Josh, can concentrate on customers. I don’t punch a clock. When I finish my work, I go home. Sometimes that’s as early as 3 or as late as 7. Walker typically goes first to his New Albany store, which handles 90 to 100 cars a day. His son, Tom, also part-owner, manages this store. “We might have a personnel issue or trouble with a computer or product to discuss. Tom is so customerfocused that if someone is there, he pays no attention to me. I get there early so I can talk to him.” After Walker takes care of business there, he heads to his Jeffersonville store, which services about 60 vehicles a day, and checks in with Josh, who’s also a part-owner. At both stores,
76

he deals with mail and other paperwork such as writing checks to pay for utilities, vendors, software licensing and more. Walker brown-bags a sandwich or eats lunch out, which is beneficial because “I always wear something with a Big O logo on it. People come up to tell me their car is making a funny sound and we talk about it. I may end up making an appointment for them at 3 o’clock.” LEADING BY EXAMPLE Walker is off on Sundays and Thursdays, but like all of his 50 employees, he goes in on Saturdays. “It’s important not to ask them to do something I wouldn’t do,” he says. Walker began working in the auto-parts industry as an 18-year-old. In 1988, he joined Big-O, earning several promotions through the years, before buying his first store in 1995 and leaving a corporate position to focus on his franchises in 2010.

TAKING CARE OF
BUSINESS What a franchisor should do for franchisees by Geoff Batchelder Certified Franchise Consultant
M
any entrepreneurs who are considering franchising their business think they will sell territories, make millions, and sail into the sunset. Reality sets in when I point out the value they must offer in order to make a sale and meet franchisees’ expectations in terms of systems and support. Owning a successful local business and being a successful franchisor are very different things. I remind my clients that their own business is no longer the most important thing. Making those franchisees successful is job 1, job 2, and job 3, and their business comes further down the priority list. One major factor that is common to unsuccessful franchisors is this failure to switch the priority to the franchise system from the original business. The new franchisor should have the following in place for franchisees:
78
FranchiseDictionaryMagazine.com
“The new franchisee
should never have to ‘go figure things out.’ ” HUMAN RESOURCES To keep the day-to-day operation of the original business going and provide appropriate support to franchisees, human resources need to be available. Some of these resources can be outsourced and then brought in-house as needed as the system grows. TRAINING PROGRAMS It’s vital to have training programs and operation manuals that cover every aspect of the business ramp-up, from signing the franchise agreement through grand opening. Those materials should also cover all aspects of running the business day-to-day from the time the franchise opens for business in the morning until it shuts down in the evening. PROFESSIONAL BRANDING A major reason people invest in franchise businesses is to take advantage of existing branding and ongoing marketing and advertising strategies. This includes vendor relationships for signage, website management, social media, search engine optimization (SEO), and printed materials.
LOCATION SUPPORT For many businesses, the location is crucial. The franchisor must understand the target demographics and other factors affecting site selection: traffic patterns, parking requirements, zoning, and competition, for instance. The franchisor will need to have the tools in place to do this analysis. If the franchise is brick-and-mortar, the franchisor will need to have resources in place for real estate searches, lease negotiation, store design, and construction services. SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIPS The franchisor will need to have relationships, and hopefully discount pricing in place, for items such as tools and equipment, inventory, and vehicles. A PROVEN SYSTEM The new franchisee should never have to “go figure things out.” After all, he is paying a fee and royalties to receive a system without any guesswork. Being able to follow a proven system increases the chance for success versus trying to do the same business on your own.
Geoff Batchelder has been a franchise consultant and franchise development expert for the last 10 years after spending 25 years focusing on business development in the high-tech industry. Contact him at 1-877-222-3722 or geoff@compassfranchisegroup.com. Visit www.compassfranchisegroup.com.

Q
A premium healthcare staffing company, the company provides a full continuum of care from home care to supplemental staffing for corporate clients such as nursing homes and physicians. To learn more, visit www.franchise.brightstarcare.com
What was your original inspiration for BrightStar Care?
A
I had a negative experience finding and managing care for a family member and realized there was room in the market for a high-end approach that ensured high-quality care and excellent customer service.
Q
What sets BrightStar Care apart from other brands and as a franchise?
A
Two things: One is being the highest-quality concept in the category, the only one with Joint Commission [Nursing Care Center] Accreditation. The other is our franchisees, who execute this concept so well that we are the brand with the most agencies winning Best of Home Care awards.
82

“One of our core values is continuous improvement.”
Q
What do you look for in franchise partners?
A
BrightStar Care looks for educated men and women who are self-motivated and have a high level of business acumen. Prospective franchisees must have the ability to manage and lead a team but are not required to have a health-care background. We also look for franchisees who fit our culture and have the ability to manage a workforce of hourly employees.
QA
Do you have any big plans for the future? One of our core values is continuous improvement, which applies to our concept, its execution, and our commitment to work with our franchisees to make a business that’s successful for all involved. We are also looking toward new technology offerings and a modern ad campaign later in 2019.

songs for seeds A little rockin’ and a lot of learnin’ is the mantra for songs for seeds, a “mommy and me” style class that combines music with early childhood education. The program encourages children ages newborn to 6 years old to sing, dance and play along with a live, three-piece band. The franchise offers a low investment and even lower overhead, quick rampup time, and fast break-even. Instead of enduring expensive build-outs, franchise owners partner with kid-friendly businesses in their communities to utilize unused space. Tuned In
Why franchisees (and clients!) love this brand 1. There's flexibility. Franchisees can own one unit, multiple units, or develop an entire market. Kitchen Tune-Up® does scalability well. 2. Start-up costs are low. Home-based equals low inventory and very little overhead. 3. It's fun to be part of the big reveal. Homeowners and franchisees love that projects have a fast turnaround. The “big reveal” in cabinetry and kitchen updates is achieved in only 1-5 days! Franchisees don’t have the revenue droughts that come with lengthy projects. 4. A construction-industry background isn’t necessary. Kitchen Tune-Up’s extensive training teaches franchisees everything they need to know. 5. There's no heavy lifting required. Subcontractors and employees take care of that. For more information, visit franchise@kitchentuneup.com or www.ktufranchise.com, or call 800-333-6385.
