HODGES The Town of Hodges, first incorporated in 1913, boasts a community center where senior citizens meet daily for meals and activities and is also home to a public park with a playground, volleyball and basketball courts, picnic pavilion and walking trail. The crown jewel of this community is Hodges Equestrian Park: Opened in 2013, the horse park attracts tourists from far and wide with its riding trails and campsites. Hodges’ annual community gathering is the Spirit of Hodges Festival.
PHIL CAMPBELL Phil Campbell has that small-town atmosphere so many who live there enjoy. In the late 1880s Phillip “Phil” Campbell agreed establish a railroad depot in modern-day Phil Campbell. The town was named in his honor – the only place in Alabama that shares the full name of an individual. Dismals Canyon, with its natural rock formations, caves, trails and rare glowworms, is one of Phil Campbell’s biggest attractions. The town is also home to a campus of Northwest-Shoals Community College and a county elementary and high school. EDUCATION
I
t’s no surprise that when people move to or even visit a new area, they want to know about the local schools. How big are they? What kind of programs to do they offer? What is the student-to-teacher ratio? What kind of education will my child receive here? Russellville City Schools serve children in the Russellville city limits as well as out-of-district students who meet tuition requirements. The system boasts a lower elementary, upper elementary, middle and high school, along with a thriving Pre-K program. School growth continues, with the system in the process of moving its Pre-K program into its own facility, providing more space and amenities for both Pre-K and elementary. Led by Superintendent Heath Grimes and an appointed board of education, the system has been tapped for a number of awards and recognitions by continually striving for excellence. The Franklin County Schools district features schools across the county, serving student populations from the eastern edge all the way to the state line. Schools serve Pre-K through senior children in Vina, Red Bay, Belgreen, Tharptown, Phil Campbell and East Franklin, as well as at the Franklin County Career Technical Center. Expansion and modernization projects are in place system-wide, with a number of schools seeing construction as enrollment and programs continue to grow. Led by Superintendent Greg Hamilton and an elected board of education, the system works tirelessly to provide superior education for county children. Franklin County is also home to a community college, with the Phil Campbell campus of NorthwestShoals Community College. NW-SCC is a popular choice among graduating seniors from both RCS and FCS alike and serves as a launching point for many students who choose to continue their educations at a nearby school like the University of North Alabama; a state institution like Auburn University or the University of Alabama; or even beyond state lines. Every day students in Franklin County are learning and growing. Both FCS and RCS place a heavy emphasis on developing good character, social skills and community pride and empathy, along with ensuring each student receives a quality education that will allow him or her to excel. From fine arts to STEM, from career tech courses to college-readiness to athletics, students will find what they need in Franklin County.

Did you realize when you shop local, you're actually helping your local school system? Each time you choose to buy your gas, pick up your groceries, purchase clothing or other goods, or eat at a restaurant in the city limits, 3% of the sales tax you pay goes to the city, and a portion of that goes to the Russellville City School System! What does this mean for RCS? It means shopping in the city provides more money for our students and the programs we are so proud to offer! An increase in sales tax in the city will provide an increase in funds for our fine arts programs, our athletic teams, our extracurricular groups, and our career tech courses! And increased funds lead to an increase in opportunities all around that will benefit our students and system for the future!

EDUCATION
N
orthwest-Shoals Community College has been providing post-secondary and workforce education to northwest Alabama for more than 55 years. As a comprehensive two-year college, NWSCC provides academic, career technical and lifelong educational opportunities. The College operates two campuses: the Shoals campus in Muscle Shoals and the Phil Campbell campus in Phil Campbell, located in Franklin County. NW-SCC promotes itself as an ideal option for those interested in academic transfer, career/technical programs and health studies careers. Students who attend Northwest-Shoals to obtain basic educational requirements before transferring on to a four-year college/university save on average 55-65 percent on tuition costs. The Phil Campbell campus was founded in 1963, as it derived its original charter from the Alabama legislature through the Alabama Trade School and Junior College Authority Act of 1963 as Northwest Alabama State Junior College to provide access to post-secondary education for citizens of the rural counties of northwest Alabama. It was the first public junior college in the Alabama Community College System. The Phil Campbell campus of NW-SCC might be best known for its Associate Degree Nursing. In May 2019 the ADN program graduated 57 nurses into the workforce. Another highlight of the NW-SCC Phil Campbell campus is the music department, which has been a staple for rural northwest Alabama for more than 40 years. In addition to nursing, NW-SCC offers welding, applied engineering and machining programs and the academic transfer option, which allows students the opportunity to take basic core classes at NW-SCC before transferring to a four-year college or university. Regardless of a student’s educational goals, NW-SCC can help them achieve those goals. For more information about Northwest-Shoals Community College, visit nwscc.edu.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES HONORING OUR HEROES Franklin County has a rich tradition of honoring its active military and esteemed veterans. Besides annual recognitions, like the Russellville Veterans Day parade and the Every Light a Prayer for Peace ceremonies, the county has three parks where monuments serve as enduring reminders of the price so many have paid. Bay Tree Park Visitors to Bay Tree Park in downtown Red Bay will notice a towering stone testament to the heroism of World War I, World War II, Vietnam, Korea and Persian Gulf veterans, in addition to other, smaller monuments as well. Phil Campbell Memorial Park Dedicated to the memory of those lives lost in the April 27, 2011, tornado, the Phil Campbell Memorial Park also includes a stone erected in honor of veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Russellville Veterans Park Adjacent to the Franklin County Archives, Russellville Veterans Park is dedicated to the local men and women who put their lives on hold when their country needed them the most. A brick pathway winds among the monuments and features the names of many local heroes. The welcome monument, shaped like an open book, also serves as a time capsule. Also in Russellville, at the county courthouse, is a monument that lists the names of many Franklin County natives who gave their lives for their country.
Education Is Our Business The Franklin County Cooperative Extension System, the outreach organization for the land-grant mission of Alabama A&M University and Auburn University, delivers research-based educational programs that enable Franklin County citizens to improve their quality of life and economic well-being.
