Sock drive benefits local nursing home By Staff Reports The Franklin County Women’s Leadership Committee, a division of Alabama Farmers Federation is seeking donations, to be made by Dec. 1, for its annual “Cottons for Christmas” sock drive. Requested donations are for new socks that will be distributed to residents in one of the county’s nursing homes. Each year, the committee picks a different nursing home in the county, with the goal of providing a gift of socks and lotion for all residents in that facility. Last year’s recipient was Terrace Manor in Russellville. “We had close to 300 pairs last year,” explained committee member Carol Glass. “We hope to have at least three or four pairs of socks for each person. If we can get 300 pairs, we’re set pretty good. We purchase lotion that we put in there with it.” There will be a donation collection box at the annual Farm-City banquet Nov. 13 at the A.W. Todd Centre in downtown Russellville. Additional boxes will be placed: Franklin County Courthouse/Extension Office (Leave donations with one of the courthouse security guards.) The annual Helping Santa toy drive, coordinated by the Russellville Fire Department, in partnership with the Russellville Police Department, is underway. To apply for assistance through this program, pick up an application at the police department and turn it in there when complete. The deadline for turning in applications is Dec. 8. Pickup dates for toys will be determined at a later date. Businesses or groups interested in allowing a toy donation drop-off box can contact RFD’s Lt. Andy DeVaney at 256-8101637. “Our community really steps up and helps with this each year,” DeVaney said. “This is for anybody in the city or county who needs help with toys for their kids, including foster kids, or grandkids for Christmas.” DeVaney said so far the toy drive has been able to fill all the applications turned in each year. “I’ve helped with this every year since we started doing it,” he added. “Several of us have been involved since the start. We prefer new toys. Some people prefer to donate money. Junior Leaders help us shop for the toys.” RFD Deputy Chief Randy Seal coordinated the event previously. While DeVaney is at the helm now, Seal said he is still involved. “Andy’s (DeVaney) been helping with it every year, and since I have the position of Deputy Chief now, with more duties, it was time to let someone else head up the program,” Seal explained. “All the guys at the RFD and RPD love to help with this every year, and it takes an army working together for this outreach to go smoothly and be able to help those who need it.”

Veterans Day provides early opportunity for gratitude in month of thankfulness

Quote of the Week

"G

ive every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life."

— Mark Twain American humorist, novelist and travel writer best remembered as the author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885).

We Say Editorial Staff

An important observance is coming up that we want to make sure you don’t forget: Veterans Day is this week. Veterans Day falls Nov. 11 each year – this year, a Saturday – and it is a day that has long been set aside to thank our heroes for their service and sacrifice. Franklin County boasts a strong commitment to

patriotism, love of country and fellow countrymen, with a number of veterans and service members in our midst. This is the perfect time to remember and appreciate the efforts that have been made throughout the centuries for the American freedoms we hold dear. Growing out of what was initially observed as Armistice Day, Veterans Day was formally established in 1954 following World War II. Oct. 8, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first “Veterans Day Proclamation” which stated in part: “In order to insure proper and wide-

spread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose.” Let’s not forget or overlook the historic significance of this one-day commemoration that has stood the test of time, “a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice

for the common good,” as expressed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. To all veterans, we at the Franklin County Times salute you and offer our gratitude. Without you, our world and lives would look a lot different today. Thank you – for your sacrifice and for our freedoms. If you know a veteran, or meet one at a ceremony or parade, or cross paths with one while you are out and about this week, we hope you will give them a hearty handshake, look them in the eye and offer a sincere, “Thank you for your service.”

Guest speaker Rep. Jamie Kiel kicked off the Franklin County Education Retirees Association meetings for the new calendar year Oct. 18. The meeting took place at the Russellville First Methodist Church ministry center. Kiel said that more than 1,000 pieces of legislation were introduced, but only a third passed. He discussed some of the more prominent bills. The Literacy Act is intended to improve reading outcomes for students across Alabama. This law states that all third-grade students must demonstrate sufficient reading skills for promotion to fourth grade beginning with the 2023-2024 school year. In accordance with the law, all kindergarten through third-grade students receive an Alabama State Department of Education approved reading assessment. The Legislature provid-

The Department of Human Resources is the lead agency offering a Baby Box to all expecting and new parents in the state. The goal is to provide parents with the education and resources needed to ensure a safe sleep environment for their infants. A Fentanyl penalties bill provides mandatory sentencing guidelines for anyone that sells, makes, delivers or possesses more than one gram of fentanyl. It will also impose additional penalties for any subsequent violations. In addition to the regular session, two spe-

cial sessions were held in July to redraw the Alabama Congressional map to meet the representation for Black voters as required by the U. S. Supreme Court. Kiel said his district remains the same. When asked about the possibility of expanding Medicare in Alabama, money for the Trust Fund or retirees receiving the Cost of Living Advance in the 2024 legislative session, he said there was little hope because of inflation. The good news is there will be no proration for schools. One major concern is the passing of school vouchers in the 2024 session. District I Director Melba Wiegand also

attended the meeting and gave greetings from the AERA Staff. She encouraged members to be watchful for scams as elders are prime targets. She reminded members to enroll at least two new members this year to meet the AERA statewide community service project of increasing membership. Sandy Gibson presided over the meeting. She reported a total for the group of 113,630 community volunteer service hours over the past year and encouraged members to continue to submit their hours at each meeting. Elizabeth Daniel reported the project for this year will be the Russellville Coalition for the Homeless. Members are encouraged to bring items to each meeting. Gibson serves on the AERA State Legislative Committee and encouraged members to read the AERA Voice magazine for updated information. A potluck luncheon followed, and membership dues were collected. Yearly membership dues are $12, and associate member dues are $5, for the year. This is the time of the year to join so you can enjoy good fellowship and keep abreast of the benefits for retirees.

Football look ahead First week of playoffs By Bart Moss For the FCT Class 5A Playoffs: Russellville (8-2) hosts Fairfield (4-6) Russellville won Class 5A Region 8 and will host Fairfield, the fourth seed in Region 5. The Golden Tigers two losses were to Class 3A Mars Hill and Class 6A Athens. They were undefeated in region play and outscored their opponents this year 389154. Fairfield lost five out of their first six games, but won three out of the last four. They have struggled defensively this year, giving up 377 points and scoring 271 points. Russellville and Fairfield met twice, and the Golden Tigers won both games. Class 3A Playoffs: Phil Campbell (4-6) at Gordo (9-1) - Phil Campbell made the playoffs as a four seed in Class 3A Region 8 by virtue of a complicated tiebreaker formula. After dropping games to top ten teams, Lauderdale County and Mars Hill, the Bobcats beat Colbert Heights and Clements before losing to Red Bay. Gordo is the top seed in Class 3A Region 5 and one of the top teams in the state. The Green Wave’s sole loss is Bibb County, a Class 4A team with one loss. Gordo’s defense allowed 136 points this year, and scored 425 points. They posted two shutouts and held opponents to 10 or less in three other games. Phil Campbell and Gordo met in the baseball playoffs last year, but they have never met in football. Class 2A Playoffs: Red Bay (6-4) at Tuscaloosa Academy (8-2) - The Red Bay Tigers enter the Class 2A playoffs as a four seed out of Region 8. They will play the top seed from Region 5, Tuscaloosa Academy. The Tigers were on a two game losing streak (Tanner and Hatton) before ending the regular season with a 52-20 win over Class 3A Phil Campbell. The Tigers were 3-3 in region play, outscoring their opponents 338-230 this year. The Knights lost two games this year, to American Christian and Lamar County. They outscored their opponents 380-198. Tuscaloosa Academy is coming off five straight wins. Since a midseason open week, they have beaten Winston County, Sulligent, Cold Springs and Holt. Red Bay and Tuscaloosa Academy have never met on the gridiron.

Red Bay football team defeats Phil Campbell By Bart Moss For the FCT After a back-andforth first quarter, the Red Bay Tigers rolled to a 52-20 win over the Phil Campbell Bobcats to end the regular season. Both teams enter the playoffs this week as four seeds. Red Bay goes to Tuscaloosa Academy, and Phil Campbell goes to Gordo. Red Bay used a dominating run game to stymie Phil Campbell. The Tigers rushed for 316 yards on 45 carries while limiting the Bobcats to 146 yards. Turnovers played a role early in the game with Phil Campbell having two fumbles that went for touchdowns, slowing

Golden Tigers fall to Athens as both teams prepare for football playoffs By Brannon King For the FCT The Russellville Golden Tigers traveled to Athens High School on Friday night to finish the regular football season, and the Golden Eagles got the win by a 41-14 final score. Both teams are headed to the AHSAA playoffs with 5A Russellville (8-2) hosting Fairfield (4-6) while 6A Athens (8-2) will travel to Oxford (8-2) for the opening round. Russellville jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead versus the Golden Eagles when Michael Scofield was on the receiving end of a Harrison Burch throw for a 29-yard touchdown play after Malachi Duncan intercepted an Athens pass. The following Athens drive ended on another turnover as Russellville’s Braxten Goodson intercepted the Golden Eagles’ pass attempt. After an RHS punt, Athens was able to even the score on the last play of the opening quarter when Brogan Gross threw a threeyard touchdown pass to Johnson Speegle. The Golden Eagles took advantage of a Russellville miscue when the ball went over the head of the punter on the snap and Athens took

Four plays later, John McIntyre scored on a short run, and the score was 13-7 after the extra-point kick was no good. The Athens lead grew to 21-7 with 3:27 left in the first half when Silas Jones scored on an 18-yard run that was followed by a successful two-point pass. Russellville gained momentum just before

the halftime break when JT Hill recovered an Athens fumble. After a pass completion from Burch to Cash Crumpton, RHS scored when Cam Phinizee ran for a sixyard touchdown. The Manny Martinez extrapoint kick was good, and the Golden Tigers were trailing 21-14 after two quarters.

any moment the Bobcats may have built up. Jaxson Vinson accounted for 206 of Red Bay’s 316 rushing yards for the Tigers. The teams were exchanging touchdowns early on with Phil Campbell taking a 12-8 lead in the first quarter. After that, Red Bay scored six unanswered touchdowns to close out the game. Red Bay opened the game with a four-yard run by Cody Carnes to take an 8-0 lead early. Phil Campbell responded with a long run by Hayden Wingo to the Red Bay one yard line. Braxton Mayfield punched the ball in to cut the lead to 8-6.

Continued from page B1 Phil Campbell tacked on another touchdown with 2:19 to go in the first quarter when freshman quarterback Hayston Scott ran the ball around the left side of the field to score from nine yards out giving the Bobcats a 12-8 lead. After that score by Scott, it was all Red Bay. With 8:41 to go in the second quarter, Vinson scored the first of his four touchdowns. This one was from five yards out to give Red Bay a 16-12 lead, a lead they would never relinquish. Holden Inmon scooped up a Phil Campbell fumble and went 64 yards for the touchdown to give Red Bay a 20-12 lead.

Vinson capped off Red Bay’s first half, scor-

ing with a dagger, from seven yards out to give

the Tigers a 28-12 lead at halftime.

Red Bay was in firm control and looked to put the game away early in the second half. Vinson scored two more touchdowns of 25 yards and 46 yards to extend Red Bay’s lead to 44-12. Red Bay added one more score on a four yard run by Brayden Tabbs to give the Tigers a 50-12 lead. Phil Campbell scored once more as time was expiring on an eight-yard run by Scott. In other scores around the county, Vina won their first game of the year beating Waterloo 42-32. Tharptown lost to Whitesburg Christian 44-0.
