‘’Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1:3 KJV

The annual Helping Santa toy drive, coordinated by the Russellville Fire Department, in partnership with the Russellville Police Department, is underway. To apply for assistance through this program, pick up an application at the police department and turn it in there when complete. The deadline for turning in applications is Dec. 8. Pickup dates for toys will be determined at a later date. Businesses or groups interested in allowing a toy donation drop-off box can contact RFD’s Lt. Andy DeVaney at 256-810-1637. “Our community really steps up and helps with this each year,” DeVaney said. “This is for anybody in the city or county who needs help with toys for their kids, including foster kids, or grandkids for Christmas.” DeVaney said so far the toy drive has been able to fill all the applications turned in each year. “I’ve helped with this every year since we started doing it,” he added. “Several of us have been involved since the start. We prefer new toys. Some people prefer to donate money. Junior Leaders help us shop for the toys.”

FCT holiday coloring contest returns We Say Editorial Staff

Ready … set … color! Our annual Christmas Coloring Contest returns for another year in next week’s Franklin County Times, so we hope all young artists across the county are getting ready to grab their crayons and show us their best work. We launched this colorful competition in 2020, and it’s been a holiday hit among local children. Franklin County children love a good contest, whether it’s a Farm-City essay, a 4-H poster, a rocket launch or a fundraising challenge. Next week will bring the first coloring page for this year, and a different page will appear each week through Dec. 13. Children through age 12 will have four chances to show off their artistic skills and enter to win a

cool prize. Plus, EVERY entrant will receive a free box of crayons and a coloring book. Local business sponsors help us make this contest possible for the community each year, and they have our gratitude during this season of joy and thankfulness. We hope you will show them your thanks, too, by patronizing their businesses during the holidays and in the year to come. This is what it means to be a community – mutual support and positive connection. Don’t let the children in your life – whether that’s your own children, your grandchildren, the next-door neighbors or those church youth – miss the coloring page each week as “the holidays” begin in earnest. We’ll have plenty of extra copies of the paper at our office in downtown Russellville as well as in paper boxes throughout the county. There’s no purchase necessary for children to enter. Let’s get coloring!

November goes bananas over banana pudding Mayor Brian Scott

Councilman Tim Atkinson

She Says María Camp Managing Editor

Councilwoman Judy Harden

Councilman Tim Gintz

Love it or hate it, banana pudding has a legion of devout followers. Are you one of them? November, among other things, is designated as Banana Pudding Lovers Month. Do you plan to celebrate? What makes the perfect banana pudding? Do you prefer store

bought, or do you like to make your own? Have you developed your own recipe, or do you have a treasured family favorite passed down over the years? When is your favorite time to have banana pudding? Perhaps you consider it appropriate for all seasons. Or, are you among (perhaps the minority) and find it overrated? dramatic music plays Perhaps you are more fond of banana bread. Or not a fan of any bananabased baking. I, for one, while not a fan of bananas in general, have found the occa-

CONTRIBUTED sional banana pudding to be nice, and, occasionally, banana bread as well, though neither is among

my favorites. Do you have any seasonal favorites centered around bananas?

In recognition of November as National Family Caregivers Month, the GFWC Book Lovers Study Club’s program focused on the importance of caregivers to raise the awareness of caregiving issues, educate communities and increase support for caregivers. Cheri McCain, who has served as a caregiver for her parents, in-laws, friends, children and others, presented the program. “Caregiving is considered a selfless act of providing support, assistance and comfort to someone in need, whether by a family member, a friend or a stranger,” McCain said. There are four types of caregivers--family, professional, volunteer and informal. Despite the caregivers’ different backgrounds and

circumstances, they all face common challenges including managing their physical and emotional stress, balancing work and caregiving responsibilities, lack of support and resources, guilt and loss of identity, legal and financial issues. In our country today, more than 53 million family caregivers provide unpaid care. McCain shared some of her challenges as a caregiver. She stressed that a caregiver must have empathy, compassion and commitment. The meeting was held at the Russellville First Baptist Church’s Green Room. President Brenda Oliver presided over the meeting. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance, singing of “God Bless America” and the Reading of the Collect. Debbie Beason and Lela Ray served delicious refreshments. Julie McKinney attended as a guest. The business session included the treasurer report, review and approval of the Book Lovers’ Budget for the year. Treasurer Leah Masterson reported

the club donated $75 to the Shot@Life and $75 to UNICEF. Members have donated more than $150 this year for Canine Companions for Independence. In other business, club members approved $140 to participate in the Russellville Hospital Christmas tree fundraiser. The money raised from this project will be used for the hospital’s new emergency room. Patricia Cox, Joshlyn Bowen and Nancy Foster make up the committee that will decorate the tree at City Lake Park. Attendees listen to

By Bart Moss For the FCT

Entering the second week of the football playoffs, only one team from Franklin County remains - Russellville in Class 5A. The Golden Tigers will travel to Moody. Russellville is coming off a 38-21 win over Fairfield, improving their record to 9-2. Moody, also 9-2, is coming off a first round win over Scottsboro 28-10. The Blue Devils went 5-1 in region play, beating Alexandria, Lincoln, Springville, St. Clair County and Southside Gadsden. Their only loss was to Leeds. Moody outscored their opponents 359-143 this year. Phil Campbell and Red Bay were eliminated last week on the road. The Bobcats lost to thirdranked Gordo in Class 3A, and Red Bay lost to Tuscaloosa Academy in Class 2A. Some other notable matchups in the area this week are: (Class 1A) Valley Head at Hackleburg; (Class 2A) Lexington at Fyffe; (Class 3A) Lauderdale County at Piedmont, Mars Hill at Madison Academy; (Class 4A) Deshler at Westminster Christian, Priceville at Brooks, Haleyville at Cherokee County; (Class 6A) Fort Payne at Muscle Shoals.

Russellville defeats Fairfield to open 5A football playoffs By Brannon King For the FCT The Russellville Golden Tigers hosted the Fairfield Tigers in the first round of the AHSAA Class 5A football playoffs on Friday night, and the home team got a 38-21 win as a steady rain fell for almost the entire second half. With the victory, RHS improved to 9-2 on the season and will travel to Moody in the second round to face the Blue Devils. Moody won at Scottsboro in round one by a 28-10 score. Russellville fell behind 7-0 versus Fairfield when the Tigers scored a oneyard touchdown on a fourth down play about halfway through the first quarter. The Golden Tigers answered quickly when Cam Phinizee scored the first of his

four touchdowns of the night on a 47-yard run. Manny Martinez followed with the first of his five extra-point kicks during the contest to even the score. RHS took a 14-7 first quarter lead when Malachi Duncan intercepted a Fairfield pass and, before going down, he pitched the ball to Devin Green near the end zone on the return for a touchdown. The Russellville defense helped to set up the next score when Reece Carson intercepted Fairfield on the following possession. A couple of plays later, Phinizee again went 47 yards for a touchdown to end the first quarter. The half continued on the opening play of the second quarter when Fairfield threw deep, and the receiver made a catch in the end zone while

being covered to make the score 21-14 on the 50-yard touchdown. The Tigers evened the score with the aid of an interception of a Russellville pass that was followed by an eight-yard touchdown run by the quarterback with 4:34 to go in the second quarter. A missed Fairfield field goal attempt of 26-yards allowed the score to remain 21-21 at the half. With the rain coming down during the final two quarters, Russellville’s defense held Fairfield scoreless the rest of the way, and the Golden Tigers relied on their rushing attack on offense to earn the victory. Second half points for RHS came on a twoyard touchdown run by Phinizee in the third quarter followed by a 39-yard field goal in the wet conditions by

Martinez and a 46-yard Phinizee touchdown in the fourth period. “What a great job by the offense, defense and special teams,” Russellville head coach John Ritter said after the win. “It was kind of an uncharacteristic win. I don’t know if we’ve ever gotten into three tight ends and one receiver and to be in it for three quarters of the game, what a testament to our guys just for believing in what we were going to do, trusting the process and making plays on both sides.” The RHS team now looks ahead to facing the Moody squad on the road. “It doesn’t matter where we go as long as we get to go together,” Ritter said. “This group, we’ll load up a bus and go anywhere.”

Tharptown holds softball camp By Bart Moss For the FCT Well before softball season beings, Tharptown’s new softball coach,

Jonathan Jones, is working to build a foundation with the younger Wildcats. Jones, formerly Vina’s softball coach, said the

camp was a huge success. “We had 27 campers from grades three to six,” said Jones. “They worked on improving their throwing, fielding, base-running

and hitting fundamentals. I am super excited about the talent we have coming up in the grade school ages. The children were awesome, and it was

a blessing for our team and staff to work with our campers.” Jones was thankful for the support of the parents who sent their children to

the camp. “I just want to thank the parents and the kids for supporting Tharptown softball. The future is bright for the Wildcats.”

By Staff Reports Derrick Scott has qualified to seek election for the office of Franklin County Circuit Clerk, a vacancy created when Anita Scott decided not to seek a fourth term. He is a lifelong resident of Franklin County, serves as a deacon at Pleasant Hill Church and is a member of East Franklin Volunteer Fire Department. Scott seeks circuit clerk position reasons for wanting to be circuit clerk. “I had a bad motorcycle wreck in 2018 that resulted in seven broken bones and over 60 stitches. My bike was totaled. There’s no doubt God was watching over me, or I would not be here today,” he explained. “I’ve had several surgeries since the wreck, but still have daily pain. I really enjoy my grave service because I get to help people in their time of need, but I don’t think my body is going to hold out much longer to do the physical requirement of operating heavy equipment every day.” Scott said when his mother decided not to run for re-election, he immediately began thinking about the possibility of seeking the position. “I’ve heard her talk about the personal fulfillment of serving in pub-

lic office,” he continued. “I could be a little prejudiced, but I think Mom is a great circuit clerk. Being honest and helpful comes naturally to her. I’ve been told I am a lot like her. I take that as a compliment. I know there will be lots to learn, but I’m ready. Thankfully, there is a very competent staff (and mom) to teach me. I am a people person, so I would love to be in an office that has so much interaction with the public. Also, I know I would still be helping people. That matters to me.” Scott said that if he is elected, he will “work hard to be a clerk that Franklin County citizens can be proud of.” “I want to continue the legacy of an efficient, friendly office with a circuit clerk that serves with kindness and integrity. I humbly ask for your vote and support on March 5.”
