Sock drive benefits local nursing home By Staff Reports The Franklin County Women’s Leadership Committee, a division of Alabama Farmers Federation is seeking donations, to be made by Dec. 1, for its annual “Cottons for Christmas” sock drive. Requested donations are for new socks that will be distributed to residents in one of the county’s nursing homes. Each year, the committee picks a different nursing home in the county, with the goal of providing a gift of socks and lotion for all residents in that facility. Last year’s recipient was Terrace Manor in Russellville. This year’s selection has not been announced yet. “We had close to 300 pairs last year,” explained committee member Carol Glass. “Some people gave us money instead of socks and said to buy what was needed. We rotate from one year to the next to donate to all of them.” Glass said the committee works to help lighten the loads on nursing homes and to minister to people in need. “We hope to have at least three or four pairs of socks for each person. If we can get 300 pairs, we’re set pretty good. We purchase lotion that we put in there with it.” Additional boxes are located:: Franklin County Courthouse/Extension Office (Leave donations with one of the courthouse security guards.) ALFA Insurance Office-Russellville ALFA Insurance Office-Red Bay For questions, contact Carol Glass at 256-8105446 or Shannon Murray at 256-668-3893.

The annual Helping Santa toy drive, coordinated by the Russellville Fire Department, in partnership with the Russellville Police Department, is underway. To apply for assistance through this program, pick up an application at the police department and turn it in there when complete. The deadline for turning in applications is Dec. 8. Pickup dates for toys will be determined at a later date. Businesses or groups interested in allowing a toy donation drop-off box can contact RFD’s Lt. Andy DeVaney at 256-8101637. “Our community really steps up and helps with this each year,” DeVaney said. “This is for anybody in the city or county who needs help with toys for their kids, including foster kids, or grandkids for Christmas.” DeVaney said so far the toy drive has been able to fill all the applications turned in each year. “I’ve helped with this every year since we started doing it,” he added. “Several of us have been involved since the start. We prefer new toys. Some people prefer to donate money. Junior Leaders help us shop for the toys.” RFD Deputy Chief Randy Seal coordinated the event previously. While DeVaney is at the helm now, Seal said he is still involved. “Andy’s (DeVaney) been helping with it every year, and since I have the position of Deputy Chief now, with more duties, it was time to let someone else head up the program,” Seal explained. “All the guys at the RFD and RPD love to help with this every year, and it takes an army working together for this outreach to go smoothly and be able to help those who need it.”

Don’t let seasonal doldrums mar ‘most wonderful time of year’ We Say Editorial Staff

It’s perhaps one of the greatest ironies of life that what has been termed “the most wonderful time of the year” can also be the most challenging, bringing feelings of sadness, regret, overwhelm or even depression – or sometimes just “the blahs.” It can be a blue Christmas – or Thanksgiving, or Hannukah, or Festivus – for any number of reasons. Maybe, like the King of Rock and Roll sang, it just “won’t be the same, dear, if you’re not here with me.” Many of us have lost friends and loved ones this year, those who have passed from this life as well as those with whom we’ve had a falling out. Maybe it’s simply that they’ve moved far away – or we’re the ones who moved. Maybe their job will take them on the road this season and they’ll miss the big

family dinner. Whatever the cause, being separated from those we care about can certainly make it a blue, blue, blue, blue Christmas – or, you know, whatever holiday event. Aside from missing certain people at our holiday gatherings, having unmet expectations of any kind can throw a damper on any get together. Maybe Nana let the turkey cook until it was tough and dry. Maybe rain spoiled the plans for an evening campfire or that traditional backyard football game. Maybe you know you aren’t going to get that gift item on the top of your Christmas list, or you can’t afford to get your honey or your kids what you know they really want. On top of all that, this time of year makes many of us reflect on the months that have sped by – and all the many things that happened or didn’t happen, leaving us with the heaviness of regret. While it can be a hopeful time to look toward the future as the new year approaches, it’s all far too easy to get bogged down in

FILE PHOTO The RES fifth-grade chorus performs at Every Light a Prayer for Peace in 2022 outside the Franklin County Courthouse in downtown Russellville. all the ways this year didn’t pan out the way we hoped. We didn’t get to take that big trip. We lost a job, or we got a new job, but it’s turning out to be less awesome than we thought. And what about all those resolutions that came to nothing? Did you finally learn a new language? Lose weight? Crush your debt? No? Plenty of disappointment to go around. So as the all-important “holiday season” begins to envelop us, now is a good time to commit to keeping it as joyful as possible, despite all the things that might

threaten our happiness. This is a time of year for giving thanks, for focusing on the positive, for reaching out a hand to others. It’s a time for making precious memories, for seeking and embracing simple magic, for accepting with open arms whatever good comes your way. This season might not be perfect. In fact, we can be almost certain it won’t be. Few things are. But we can decide right now to steer clear of negative thoughts as much as possible and choose joy. That’s what we hope for all of you this time of year.

Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Upsilon’s November meeting focused on the future of Overton Farm as an educational facility. Sharon Hindman Hester, former Franklin County District Judge in the 34th Judicial Court and DKG Alpha Upsilon Honorary Member, presented the program. Overton Farm, located in Hodges, was first established in 1817 by Abner and Judy Mae Overton. The family controlled the farm’s 160 acres until 1969, when the Tennessee Valley Authority purchased it and turned it into the Bear Creek Education Center, aimed at providing local children with a view of rural and farming life during the nineteenth century. Today, the

property is undergoing conservation and restoration efforts. John L. (Bo) Williams and Sharon Hindman Hester organized Past Times LLC for the purpose of rejuvenating the property known as “The Overton Farm” and using that property as an event venue. Past Times and others have partnered with Bear Creek to work diligently to get the property ready for public openings for various events. This venue provides a serene, private setting for special events or to enjoy the beauty of Bear Creek. With its elegant gathering room, dressing and staging space, beautiful tree-covered grounds with creekside view and ample parking, this venue is perfect for weddings, business, civic gatherings, reunions or educational excursions. The dormitories are currently being restored, and the future of Overton Farm is encouraging with regards to returning to an educational facility. DKG is an International Society whose members are outstanding Women

Educators. It has more than 100,000 members, including seventeen international countries, and the United States. The November meeting was a celebration of our DKG sisters in Mexico. The purpose was to inform the members of current economic, social, political and educational issues in the world. Rebecca Massey gave a presentation on Mexico. Several members brought Mexican inspired artwork and textile items for the display table. Rebecca Massey, Tommie Bragwell, Kristy Smith, Angie Garrison

Football season ends for Russellville with second round playoff loss at Moody

PHOTOS BY BRANNON KING TOP: The Russellville Golden Tigers and Moody Blue Devils prepare for the snap. LEFT: Gunner Sappington of Russellville runs with the ball versus Moody. RIGHT: Neyland Baker lifts Cam Phinizee into the air to celebrate a RHS touchdown. By Brannon King For the FCT The Russellville football season came to an end Friday night as the Golden Tigers fell 42-21 to the Moody Blue Devils in the second round of the AHSAA Class 5A playoffs. RHS traveled to Bill Morris Stadium, and supporters of both teams packed the stands to watch the battle. After the score was tied 14-14 at the half,

the Blue Devils pulled away during the final two quarters to secure the victory. Russellville fell behind 7-0 late in the first quarter on a six-yard Moody touchdown pass. The Golden Tigers evened the score halfway through the second period when Cam Phinizee ran for a sevenyard touchdown that was followed by the first of three Manny Martinez extra-point kicks.

The next Moody possession was short-lived when Russellville’s Malachi Duncan intercepted a Blue Devils’ pass. Phinizee then gave RHS the lead five plays later when he scored on a one-yard run with 2:49 left in the first half. However, the following 14-play Moody drive that produced a 13-yard TD pass as time expired in the second quarter to tie the game gave the Devils momentum.

After receiving the second half kickoff, MHS went ahead on a 19-yard touchdown pass and later grew the advantage to 28-14 by blocking a Russellville punt and scoring a TD after a miscue on the snap. The Devils added a fiveyard touchdown run by the quarterback early in the final period to go ahead by three touchdowns. Russellville’s Paxton Wray recorded a fourth down sack on defense to

give the Golden Tigers the ball with almost three minutes on the clock. Then, Harrison Burch completed two consecutive passes to Michael Scofield with the second resulting in a 17-yard touchdown. With the score 35-21, Moody recovered the following onside RHS kick and returned for a touchdown for the final points of the game. “What a great season for our guys. I thought we did

exactly what we were supposed to do,” Russellville head coach John Ritter said on the field after the game. The season ends with the Golden Tigers going 9-3 and winning their fourthstraight region title. “Now, obviously we wanted to win more but these guys played their guts out every Friday night. What a great group, and they played the game the right way,” Ritter added.

The event took place Nov. 15 at the RHS field house. RHS baseball players Brandt Cummings and Cayden Johns signed with NWSCC and head coach David Langston while Jacey Moore of the Golden Tigers made her plans official by signing to play softball for the Patriots and head coach Angel Brown. The three standouts are currently high school seniors with another season left to play at RHS before heading to the junior college level. Cummings and Johns will be leaders on head coach

Jess Smith’s Russellville team, and Moore will be a top player on first-year RHS softball head coach Rick Lawson’s squad. “I’m happy to have this opportunity to sign,” Cummings said. “It’s a bit of a relief for the senior season to get that out of the way, and we can focus on this spring and bring one home maybe.” Both baseball signees shared they are looking forward to reuniting with Coach Langston who was a member of the Russellville coaching staff during their freshman and sophomore seasons. A large crowd filled the room at the Russellville field house to show their support for the players. “I appreciate everybody who came out from the community. She said that getting to play with her sister Jemma is one of her favorite memories that she’s making while at RHS. “She’s a freshman, and I’m a senior this year, and last year, at the end of the season, we got to play softball together a little bit, and we got to play basketball together a little bit. This year, we’re getting to play both together full time, so I’m excited about that, and it’s very sweet to me.”

We have field trips, college fairs and career fairs we take the students on to help them prepare for their futures.” Moore said the focus will turn more to the type of jobs that interest the students in the spring. “Having a plan for
