Roxy presents fourth annual Christmas Spectacular By Staff Reports The Franklin County Arts and Humanities Council presents the fourth annual “Roxy’s Christmas Spectacular.” This year’s musical show features an all-new storyline. The cast features 80 people, with many playing more than two roles. Russellville Elementary School third-grader Lillian Ritter joins the main characters, Fred and Gaspar. Zy Traywick, a senior at Phil Campbell High School, returns as the elf for his second year in the role. Micco Jackson, a freshman at Northwest Shoals Community College, takes on the role of Gaspar. A nativity scene with the song “Holiest of Nights,” written and performed by Denise Davis, will be included. The Alabama Council on the Arts has supported this production with grants since its beginning. The Franklin County Arts Council received a $5,600 grant this year. Hillary Hall is the show’s writer and director. She is joined by Kaylee Brannon as assistant director/choreographer and assistant choreographer Sydney Medley. The show takes the stage with public performances Dec. 7-10. Tickets are on sale now. Tickets may be purchased online by visiting the Roxy’s Christmas Spectacular Facebook page.

BTCPA holds auditions for second play of season
The Bay Tree Council for the Performing Arts in Red Bay, Ala, announces auditions for its second production of the season, “Fox on the Fairway,” by Ken Ludwig and directed by Molly Thorn. Auditions dates are Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. and Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in the theatre of the Weatherford Centre in downtown Red Bay. The cast calls for three males and three females. Younger parts could be played by teens who can appear to be in their twenties. The performance dates are Feb. 15-18, 2024, with each performance including dinner. Contact Beth Hammock at 256-6680045 for more information. The tickets for the play are $10.00 each, and the dinner is $20.00 each, or $30.00 for both. Dinner must be reserved in advance. This play is being brought back by BTCPA from when it was first presented in 2012. Set amid the leafy greens of Quail Valley Country Club, Ken Ludwig’s “A Fox on the Fairway” unfolds on the day Quail Valley faces its oldest rival, nearby Crouching Squirrel Golf and Racquet Club, for the golf tournament of the decade. Battle lines are drawn when the two clubs assemble their bravest heroes and play on to the final madcap putt on an eighteenth hole that is the stuff of legend. A tribute to the English farces of the 1930s and ’40s, “A Fox on the Fairway” takes audiences on a ride that recalls the classics of the Marx Brothers

Don’t miss remaining chances to enter coloring contest We Say Editorial Staff
Quote of the Week
“F
ind out who you are. And do it on purpose.” — Dolly Parton American country music singer, guitarist and actress known for her philanthropy.
Two weeks down, two weeks to go. This is the third week for our annual Christmas Coloring Contest, which means young artists still have this week and next to show their skills and maybe win a cool prize.
This year’s contest started with the Nov. 22 newspaper, with a festive candy cane. The Nov. 29 coloring page was an angelic messenger. This week’s page is the image of a jolly breakfast with Santa. We can’t wait for you to see next week’s, the fourth and final coloring page in the contest. A contest isn’t a contest without prizes for the winners. A $25 Walmart gift card will be awarded to the top coloring champs in three age divisions –
6 and younger, 7-9 and 10-12. But when it comes to Christmas creativity, we want everyone to feel like a winner; so, every entrant will receive a free box of crayons and a coloring book. All entries, along with entry forms, are due Dec. 15, and we will share the winners in the Dec. 20 edition of the Franklin County Times. Children may enter more than once, but no photocopies will be accepted; if you need

Managing Editor I’ll be pleasantly surprised if we get any snow this year. This is Alabama, after all, and we rarely have even a few flurries, never mind enough to cover the ground nicely; however, it does still happen on occasion. It’s far too early right now, of course, but it’s a nice thought to entertain the possibility of enough snow to decorate the ground and to enjoy watching as it falls. Meanwhile, Franklin County is busy with a number of Christmas events, some already passed and others in the works. What
are you looking forward to or hoping for this winter? Perhaps you are still clinging to fall, and it’s not technically winter just yet, but it will be here before we know it. I love seeing the leaves change. Our maple tree
never showed off its colors this year in the way it normally does. Our neighbor’s maple tree always seems to “blossom” more intensely and sooner. I don’t know what accounts for it, but it’s pleasant to see as I drive by.
While we’re on the edge of the two seasons, it might be a good time to reflect on fall and remember the memories made this year. Do you have any new favorites or treasured activities you revisited this year?

According to Cheri McCain, program chairman for the Cultura Garden Club, creative napkin folding is an easy way to elevate your tabletop décor by enhancing the atmosphere through improving your place settings with additional attention to detail. One important napkin folding technique is to iron napkins before folding them in order to get crisp creases. First impressions matter, and attention to detail makes all the difference. McCain also shared ideas specifically for children and teenagers. While there are a number of types of napkin folds, only a few were presented: • The flat fold napkin is the simplest and works well alongside a bright and bold tablescape. • A knotted napkin fold gives tablescapes a soft, relaxed feel that looks graceful and romantic in any setting. • Rolled napkins come in two ways—the circular and the loosely folded, known as waterfall or draped napkins. The draped napkin is great for a pretty pop of color to offset a classic white tablecloth. • A square fold is a

Other suggestions include adding napkin rings and tucking in utensils, menus, place cards or party favors. Additional suggestions included using monogrammed napkins to create a sophisticated tone, as well as adding a sprig of greenery or
flowers. The meeting took place at the beautiful home of Debra and Mickey Spillers. Decorative accents featuring fall colors were used throughout the house. Martha Sibley served as co-hostess. President Debbie Nale welcomed new members Ann Marie Bucholts, Kyra Britton and Julie McKinney. Nale presented an institute on decorating for Thanksgiving. Sibley gave a brief report on the GCA District I Fall Meeting held in Red Bay, providing highlights of guest speaker Mike Ezell’s presentation on Alabama native flowers and wildflowers. Patricia Cox reviewed the schedule for decorating the courthouse, post office, small pole decorations, Christmas tree and
adding pine and magnolias in the downtown pots. The program for the Every Light a Prayer for Peace and Christmas tree lighting ceremony was approved. Members also approved supporting the Russellville Hospital City Lake Christmas tree fundraiser. Proceeds will go to building a new emergency room. In support of the Russellville Fire Department toy drive, the members voted to donate $300. The Alabama State Light a Prayer for Peace which will be held Dec. 1 in Montgomery was discussed. A Christmas tea reception will be held after the Christmas tree lighting at the Governor’s Mansion. Several members made tentative plans to attend.

Russellville basketball team defeats Red Bay in first game of season By Brannon King For the FCT BOYS The Russellville Golden Tigers opened the varsity boys’ basketball season with a hard-fought 76-71 home win over the Red Bay Tigers. Russellville’s EJ King led all scorers with 29 points as the two teams from Franklin County got balanced scoring from six players each. RHS got off to a hot shooting start by scoring 24 first quarter points and led by six at the end of the period. Red Bay answered in the second by outpacing the Golden Tigers 18-14 to draw to within two at the
half. The teams continued to battle in the third with RBHS evening the score to 51-51 heading into the fourth quarter with the help of a 21-19 period. Coach John Torisky’s Red Bay team took a 69-67 lead with just under four minutes left in the game on a Cody Carnes threepointer. Russellville’s King answered with his own three to give the Golden Tigers a onepoint advantage. Red Bay took back the lead with a Lawson Glover bucket with 2:00 remaining. Russellville finished the game strong with a steal by Malachi Duncan followed by his three-point play that was the result of a made shot and free
throw on the play with 47 seconds left in the game. The final RHS points of the contest came on two free throws by Amir Williams and one by KJ Murray. Even after falling behind in the fourth quarter, Russellville head coach Patrick Odom said he believed in his team’s ability to come back and get the victory. “This team is experienced, and there’s no panic,” Odom said. “We settled in, and Malachi made a great defensive play to come back and give us the lead, and we finished the game the way that we’re supposed to finish it.” The season-opening win
for RHS over a talented Red Bay squad marked a good beginning of the year for the Golden Tigers. “It’s a great start,” Odom said. “It’s good playing good people, and it’s always good to win. Now, we’ve played a game, and we’ve got to go and clean stuff up and start getting better.” Following EJ King in the scoring column for RHS was Amir Williams with 17. Malachi Duncan added 14 and KJ Murray had 12. Mike Young and Bralynn Vincent had two points apiece. Red Bay was led in scoring by Carnes and Glover each with 18 points. Ethan McCoy scored 11, Ty Reynolds and Holden Inmon had 10 apiece and
Gage Edgmon scored four points.
GIRLS The Russellville Lady Golden Tigers hosted the Mars Hill Bible School Lady Panthers to continue the varsity season. Mars Hill got the 73-54 win after leading 31-27 at the half and 53-34 after three quarters. Ella Copeland’s 19 points led the scoring for Russellville (3-2). Avery Watts and Jacey Moore also scored in double figures with 10 points each. Desiree Medina added six, Jemma Moore scored four, Alexia Groce had three and Laila Hill pitched in with two points for RHS.
Red Bay basketball team sneaks by Sulligent By Bart Moss The Red Bay Tigers held off the Sulligent Blue Devils to win 57-56. Lawson Glover led the Tigers with 18 points, including eight in the second quarter and six in the fourth. A pair of early threepointers by Ethan McCoy helped Red Bay jump out to a big first quarter lead 16-9. The Tigers led at the half 33-26, with McCoy’s 10 first half points. Sulligent doubled up Red Bay in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 14-7 to tie the game 40-40. Cody Carnes score eight points in the fourth quarter, making two three pointers and a pair of free throws, powering Red Bay to the win. Following Glover’s team-high 18 points, McCoy added 13. Carnes and Holden Inmon scored 10 each. Gage Edgmon added three points, and Conner Humphries one point.
