Children’s “Letters to Santa” bring extra joy to season We Say Editorial Staff

Each year, sharing “Letters to Santa” from Franklin first-graders puts a little extra twinkle in our eyes here at the Franklin County Times. If you’re like me, perhaps you find something you love and cling to it, possibly until such a time you suddenly realize you’ve had quite enough, perhaps for good or maybe just until the mood happens to strike again at some point in the distant or not-so-distant future. Even so, I enjoy trying new drinks. If it doesn’t suit me quite, but is almost right, I try to take note how I might tweak it if I try it again. I prefer a nice hot drink, nothing too sweet. It’s easy to overdo it on the sugary selections, both on taste and with the accumulation of unintended quantities of calories. I often find it just right to ask for a drink to be half

the sweetness. Not only does this suit my preferences, but also there’s a fine line between the right amount of sweetness and a sickeningly sweet quantity. What are your favorites? Do you search them out? Have you crafted your own recipe? What makes your favorite wintertime drink so special? It can be a tasty adventure fun to undertake as many places lean into themes of creative confectionaries and adventurous selections for hot beverages to enjoy on a cool day (or any time). Do you have traditional favorites you prefer to enjoy at this time? One of my recent favorites includes a half sweet non-dairy latte, and there are many varieties to enjoy along the way. What are your favorites (or never-agains) this year? Whatever your pre-

CONTRIBUTED

ferred selections, try to find some quiet moments to truly enjoy them and take time to savor the simple things along the way, no matter how brief. It’s been my experience that the “small things” in life are often not small at all, so let’s take time to appreciate them and fully experience the special treats along the way as we go about our day, working our way through to navigate all the whatevers we’ve got piled on our plates. All that can wait, at least for a bit.

Financial Focus: Consider these year-end financial moves By Adam McCollum For the FCT It won’t be long before we turn the page on 2023, but you still have time to make some financial moves that can pay off in 2024 and beyond. Here are a few to consider: • Review your progress toward your goals. Have you made progress toward your long-term goals over this past year? If not, you may want to revisit your investment and financial strategies. • Boost contributions to your retirement plans. If your employer allows it, you may be able to increase your contributions to your 401(k) or similar retirement plan before the year ends, and you have until April 15 to contribute to your IRA for the 2023 tax year. You can put in up to $6,500 to your traditional or Roth IRA and add another $1,000 if you’re 50 or older. (Your ability to fully contribute to a Roth IRA is based on your income). • Don’t waste FSA dollars. If you have a flexible spending account (FSA) through your employer, you’ve likely used it to take care of a variety of healthcare costs, such as deductibles, co-payments and coinsurance, but FSAs are “use it or lose it” accounts, so if you have unspent dollars at yearend, you risk losing them. Make sure you know your employer’s deadlines for incurring expenses and submitting claims so you

Adam McCollum Financial Advisor Edward Jones 401 Cox Blvd Suite C Sheffield, AL 35660 can take full advantage of your FSA. • Contribute to your HSA. When you have a health savings account (HSA), your contributions are tax deductible, your earnings generally grow tax-free and your withdrawals are tax-free, as long as they’re used for qualified medical expenses. Plus, a HSA isn’t “use it or lose it” — you can carry unused funds through retirement when you can still use them for qualified medical expenses. And you’ve got until the April 15 tax deadline to contribute to your HSA for 2023. Check with your employer on how to contribute to your HSA past December 31, 2023. • Strengthen your emergency fund. If you don’t already have an emergency fund, see if you can start one before the year lets out. Eventually, try to put away three to six months worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk

account. • Think about tax-loss harvesting. If you have some investments that have lost value and they no longer fit into your plan, you could sell them to offset gains from other investments, including capital gains distributions from mutual funds. If your losses exceed gains for the year, you could use the remaining losses to offset up to $3,000 of ordinary income. Any amount over $3,000 can be carried forward to offset gains in future years. You’ll want to consult with your tax advisor before embarking on tax-loss harvesting. • Bundle your charitable contributions. A few years ago, a change in the tax laws resulted in a large increase in the standard deduction which led to fewer people itemizing deductions and fewer incentives for making deductible charitable gifts. If you can afford to “bunch” two to three years’ worth of charitable donations, you may be able to itemize and gain a greater tax benefit. It’s always challenging to reach your goals and gain feelings of control over your financial future, but by reviewing your situation every year and making the appropriate moves, you can help yourself keep moving in the right direction. By Brannon King For the FCT The Russellville varsity basketball teams are off to a winning start during the early-portion of the 2023-24 season. RHS recently hosted boys and girls games versus the Deshler Tigers and then the two Russellville squads opened area play with contests against the Brewer Patriots. Deshler visited Russellville on Dec. 5 and the Golden Tigers held-on to win the boys’ game by an 85-80 final score. RHS had a 37-27 lead at the half and the Golden Tigers went into the fourth quarter with a 66-48 advantage before Desher finished strong with a 32-19 fourth period.

Russellville was led in scoring by EJ King’s 21 points. Amir Williams followed closely with 20. Also scoring in double figures were Mike Young with 13 points and Bralynn Vincent with 11. Jah Williams and Gavin Hyde added six points each, Malachi Duncan scored five and KJ Murray had three. Deshler’s Garrett Reid had 24 points to lead all scorers. Deshler’s girls defeated Russellville by a 68-40 total. DHS jumped-out to a 21-8 first quarter lead and had a 34-17 halftime advantage. Russellville’s top-scorer was Ella Copeland with 18 points. apiece. Avery Watts and Laila Hill scored four each and Jemma Moore had two points. Deshler’s Reece Davis was atop the scoring column with 24 points. RHS hosted Brewer on Dec. 8 for the first area games of the season for the Golden Tigers. Russellville’s boys improved to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the area with a fast-paced 99-61 victory over the Patriots. All RHS players scored and five Golden Tigers finished the game in double-figures. As a team, Russellville scorched the nets with 16 made three-pointers. EJ King led the group with 20 points. Mike Young had 17, Malachi Duncan 16, Amir

Williams 12, KJ Murray 11, Gavin Hyde nine, Jah Williams seven, Rylan Pratt five and Bralynn Vincent had two points. Russellville head coach Patrick Odom was happy with how his team improved in the areas of limiting turnovers and passing the basketball. “I thought the ball whipped and moved and we were able to get the game in transition which is how we want to play,” Odom said. “That’s our only area game before Christmas, so we did what we needed to do. I thought it was the best and most complete game we’ve played all year.” The Lady Golden Tigers used a 14-2 second quarter to pull away

from Brewer on the way to a 51-38 victory. Russellville improved to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in area play with the win. Laila Hill and Jacey Moore led the team with 20 points each. Ella Copeland scored nine and Jemma Moore added two. RHS was able to use their defensive attack to create a large number of Brewer turnovers. “This was one of the first games that we’ve been able to play our pressure defensive package for the entire game,” Russellville head coach Jermaine Groce said. “The girls did a great job of applying pressure and forcing them to speedup.”

Russellville High School tennis player signs with UNA By Brannon King For the FCT Russellville High School tennis standout Peyton Parrish made her future plans known during a celebration at the RHS field house where she signed to play for the University of North Alabama Lions. Parrish has already been a top-player on the RHS varsity squad for many years. So far at RHS, Parrish has a sin-

gles record of 84-14 and has been the No. 1 court singles section champion three times. She is the first RHS girl to make it to the singles finals at the state tournament. Last summer, she participated as a member of the AHSAA North-South All-Star tennis team. “I’m so thankful for everyone that came out,” Parrish said about her celebration and signing. “This is just a dream come true for me, so I’m

just so thankful that we all got to come here and make it so special.” Russellville head coach Charlotte Dollar shared that Parrish not only excels on the court but also off of it. “As amazing as Peyton is as a tennis player, she is an even more amazing person,” Dollar said. “She excels academically and participates in numerous school clubs and activities, including Miss RHS. She is gen-

erous, kind, humble and respectful. I consider myself blessed just to know her and am so honored and grateful to have her on my team.” The Russellville team has qualified for the state tournament each year that Parrish has been on the squad. The last three years, the Golden Tigers have finished third, second and fourth at the 4A-5A state tournament. Each of those years, RHS finished as the top 4A-5A

public school in the state. “I’m really working hard to be able to win state this year,” Parrish explained. “This year, I’m really pushing myself and working as hard as I can to maybe achieve that goal.” Parrish’s skills can also be seen on the No. 1 doubles court for RHS alongside her partner, Sofi Tiffin. The teammates have been No. 1 doubles section champs twice and No. 1 doubles

state runner-up twice. “It’s been a great experience to get to go through all my high school tennis years with her because she’s so amazing at everything she does,” Tiffin said of Parrish. “She’s such a good person, she’s very inspirational and she’s just a good influence to look up to. I’m so proud of her and what she’s done to get to this point, and I hope she does well in all that she does.”

My First Christmas In Heaven I see countless Christmas trees with tiny lights around the world below, like Heaven’s stars reflecting in the snow. The sight is so spectacular. Please, wipe away the tears for I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, but the sounds of music can’t compare... with the Christmas choir up here. I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring, for it’s beyond description to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart, but I am not so far away, we really aren’t apart. So be happy for me, dear ones, you know I hold you dear and be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I sent each of you a special gift, from my heavenly home above... I sent you each a memory of my undying love. After all, love is the gift more precious than pure gold, it was always most important in the stories that Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do, for I can’t count the blessings or love He has for each of you. So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away the tears, remember I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. -Author Unknown
