Jonessaidhavingthe awardplacedintheRed BayMuseumwasthemost appropriatewaytohonor hermother’slegacy. “Wewereactuallyat family’shousejustaminuteagoandweweretalkingabouthowthispart ofthecountry,bothRed BayandTremont,meant somuchtoMom,”Jones
said.“Andweweresaying thatshewasliterallyakid atChristmasifshegotto comevisithereorwhen shewasathome.Someof ourfamilywouldbeable tovisither.Iknowthis isthebestplaceforthis (award)tobeandScotty (Kennedy)andeveryone hereattheMuseumworks sohard.Itissuchabeautifulplaceinherhonor, anditmeanstheworldto ourfamilies.”
Kennedy,curatorofthe museumwhowasalsoa closefriendofWynette, saidhewasecstatic whenhelearnedthefamilywantedtheawardto bedisplayedinRedBay. “Abouttwodaysafterthe (Grammy)event,Georgia sentmejustareallysweet textsaying,‘JackieandI havetalked,andwe’dlove toloanyoutheGrammy Awardtodisplayatthe museum.’Igotalittle teary-eyed.Iwasmore thanthrilled.”
Wynette,whodiedat herNashvillehomeApril 6,1998,wasoneofsix musicalartistsandgroups honoredFebruary3with the2024GrammyLifetime AchievementAward.Also honoredwereGladys Knight,DonnaSummer, theClarkSistersand LaurieAnderson.N.W.A. Jonessaidthefacther motherwashonoredmore thanaquartercentury afterherdeathspeaks tohowhertrailblazing workstillresonatesinthe industry.
“Iwasfullofpride, forsure.Iwassohappy andproudforMom,” JonessaidaboutreceivingtheawardforWynette.
“Momalwaysfeltlikethe Grammysweretheulti-
mateaccomplishmentin acareerforherbecause you’revotedonbyyour peersthere.It’snotjust yourfans,whichofcourse momlovedherfans,but therecognitioncoming fromotherartistsreally meantalottoher,thatshe wouldbeacknowledged withthiskindofaward. Wewerereallythrilledfor her,anditwaskindof terrifyingbeingthereat thesametime.Wewere surroundedbysomany peoplewhoweadmireand havegrownuplistening toandbeingaround,so itwaskindofamoment forustobethereonher behalf,tobeabletoaccept thatforher.Ijustknow she’slookingdownfrom heavenwithabigsmileon herface.”
Jonessaidthedecision toplacetheawardonloan totheRedBayMuseum madeperfectsenseforher family.
“Thatwasprobablythe easiestdecisionwecould evermake,”Jonessaid. “Therearefourofusgirls andthethoughtoftryingtofigureoutwhowas goingtokeepitwhere andifweweregoingto shareitandwhathouse.. .itjustseemedsocomplicatedandsilly,especially
whenit’skindofhard toappropriatelyhaveit admiredorobservedin anywaythatwouldbe specialatourhouses.And so,thefirstthingthat poppedinourmindwas Scottyhereinthemuseum,becausethey’vedone somuchtohonorMom. Ithinkthisisprobably thebiggestexhibitofanythingforMomanywhere andthey’vedonesucha goodjobatputtingthings together,andwithher familyandourfamilyand friendsbeingrightherein thisarea,itjustseemed liketheperfectplacefor hertobehonored.She wouldlovethatit’shere inRedBay.” Inordertomakeroom forWynette’slatestaward, KennedyandtheRedBay Museum,withWynette’s family’sblessing,recently transferredtwoawards thathadbeenondisplay inRedBaytotheTammy WynetteLegacyCenterin Tremont.Oneofthosewas theHallofFameaward bestowedonWynetteand giventoherfamilyin 2020fromtheMississippi ArtsandEntertainment Experience,orMAXX, inMeridian.Theother awardistheAcademy ofCountryMusicCliffie
